These satellites, designed with a short lifespan of about five years, contain significant amounts of aluminum that, upon re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, produce aluminum oxide.

This compound, the scientists warned, triggers chemical reactions that can lead to ozone depletion. Study said that the oxides could last for decades as the particles drift down.

“Only in recent years have people started to think this might become a problem,” one of the study’s authors Joseph Wang said. “We were one of the first teams to look at what the implication of these facts might be."

Nearly 18.7 tons of aluminum oxide nanoparticles, , in 2022 alone, were released into the atmosphere through satellite burn-up.

At least six former staff have received legal notices, the report said citing people speaking on the condition of anonymity.&nbsp;

"It has come to our attention that you received a significant overpayment in error in January 2023," X's Asia Pacific human resources department said in an email, seen by this masthead, to a number of former staff this year, the report quoted.&nbsp;

"We would be grateful if you could arrange the repayment to us [using the account details below] at your earliest convenience," it added.&nbsp;
