Elon Musk’s brain startup, Neuralink is set to begin human trials and ChatGPT on the other hand is getting better and smarter. The week gone by was buzzing with a lot of exciting tech developments. And we bring you the most interesting ones in our tech wrap.

Neuralink aims to connect human brains to computers

As Elon Musk pursues his goal of entering the Indian market, Tesla has developed plans to produce and market battery storage systems in India and has submitted a pitch to officials looking for incentives to create a facility, according to two sources familiar with the development who spoke to Reuters.

For weeks, officials at Tesla have been in direct conversations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about establishing a new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in India to produce cars costing roughly $24,000. However, there have been no reports of its renewable energy drive so far.

These moves, according to a report by Mint, occurred just a few days after Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the business intended to purchase components worth $1.7 to $1.9 billion from India. The representative claimed that Tesla already purchased $1 billion worth of equipment from Indian suppliers last year.

According to the anonymous sources in correspondence with Reuters , during recent discussions in New Delhi, Tesla recommended assisting the nation's battery storage capacities with its "Powerwall" system, which can store energy from solar panels or the grid for usage at night or during power cuts.

One of the sources added that although Tesla requested a variety of incentives to establish a battery storage factory, Indian officials made it clear that they would not be granted. However, they emphasised that by providing subsidies to consumers who buy their products, the government may assist the corporation in developing a fair economic model.

The first source informed Reuters that, it is uncertain whether the idea will be implemented, even though both Tesla and the Indian government continue to remain invested in it.

The second source told Reuters that, the Powerwall offer was a part of the American company's intentions for a more extensive presence in India, with ideas beyond EVs, and that Tesla was eager to look for both residential and industrial consumers for its battery storage systems.

Elon Musk's brain implant start-up Neuralink has been approved to recruit humans for trials. The trials will focus on patients suffering from paralysis. Musk claims his implants can help the participants walk again. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Neuralink to kick off first human trials

Neuralink, a brain-chip business founded by Elon Musk, announced on Tuesday that it has been given the go-ahead to start recruiting for the first human trial of its brain implant for paralysis patients.

Elon Musk's Neuralink to test its brain chip in paralysis patients

Elon Musk's brain chip startup Neuralink said on Tuesday (September 19) that it would start the first human trial of its brain implant for paralysis patients. In a statement, Neuralink said it received approval from an independent review board to begin recruitment for the trial.

Musk has grand ambitions for the startup, having said it would facilitate speedy surgical insertions of its chip devices to treat conditions like obesity and autism.

Neuralink said those with paralysis due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis might qualify for the study.

The trial will take about six years to complete but it is not yet known how many participants would be enrolled.

"The PRIME Study (short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) – a groundbreaking investigational medical device trial for our fully-implantable, wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) – aims to evaluate the safety of our implant (N1) and surgical robot (R1) and assess the initial functionality of our BCI for enabling people with paralysis to control external devices with their thoughts," the statement said.

The study would use a robot to surgically place a brain-computer interface (BCI) implant in a region of the brain that controls the intention to move, it said.

The initial goal here is to enable people to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

"Once in place, the N1 Implant is cosmetically invisible and is intended to record and transmit brain signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intention," the statement added.

Experts have pointed out that even if the BCI device proves to be safe for human use, it would still probably take over a decade for Neuralink to secure commercial use clearance for it.

The report cited efforts by a Saudi state-backed investment fund to negotiate a deal to invest in the cobalt and lithium mines of Namibia, Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo as the reason for the Musk-Kingdom connection. Additionally, the report came just hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked Musk to build a factory in Turkey. Similarly, US-based Lucid Group announced last month that its first overseas plant in Saudi Arabia is set to start limited production of Lucid Air EVs, beginning this month. The report, however, claimed that the talks between Musk and Saudi officials were at an early stage and could crumble. "The talks are at a very early stage and could fall apart. Any deal could be fraught with complications, given Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk’s contentious relationship with the Saudis as well as the kingdom’s existing partnership with the company’s electric-vehicle rival Lucid Group," the report added. Elon Musk, the owner of online platform X, suggested on Monday that it might impose a monthly subscription on all users in order to reduce the use of bots. Since purchasing the website for $44 billion in October of last year, when it was still known as Twitter, the software mogul has made a number of changes.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin divorced wife over affair with Elon Musk: Report

A Bloomberg report citing a memo showed Elon Musk's X corp. Has agreed to try and resolve claims by hundreds of former twitter employees who feel they were robbed of severance compensation.

Elon Musk's ‘X’ seeks resolution for former layoff lawsuits

Elon Musk's X Corp. has taken a significant step towards resolving a series of lawsuits filed by thousands of former Twitter employees who said that they were denied severance pay following Musk’s acquisition of the social media giant last year. In an exclusive memo obtained by Bloomberg News, attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan, representing the affected workers, announced that Twitter has agreed to engage in mediation to address the legal claims.

The legal battle, which has been ongoing for nearly ten months, revolves around allegations of labour and workplace violations, primarily centred on X Corp.'s failure to provide severance packages to employees laid off during the aftermath of the $44 billion acquisition. Over the course of this dispute, approximately 2,000 former Twitter employees have been pushed into negotiation by the company, a move that Shannon Liss-Riordan criticised in court filings due to Twitter's non-participation.

Liss-Riordan's memo, sent to her clients and viewed by Bloomberg News, declared the latest development: “After 10 months of pressing them in every direction, we have succeeded in getting Twitter to the table. Twitter wants to mediate with us in a global attempt to settle all claims we have filed.”

Sources familiar with the matter, who wished to remain anonymous, have confirmed that X Corp. is now complying with a court order to engage in mediation to address these disputes.

The mediation sessions have been scheduled for December 1 and December 2, as disclosed in Liss-Riordan’s memo. The parties involved will work alongside a mediator in an effort to reach an amicable resolution to the long-standing disputes.

In response to the developments, Liss-Riordan issued a statement on behalf of the affected employees, saying, “We are very proud to be representing nearly 2,000 former Twitter employees, in individual arbitrations as well as more than a dozen class action lawsuits in court. We are working hard to recover what they are owed.”

Elon Musk's X Corp. seeks resolution in Twitter severance pay lawsuits: Report

Elon Musk's new biography by Walter Isaacson has revealed some intimate details about the billionaire's relationship with actress Amber Heard. According to the author, Musk requested his former partner to dress up as the Overwatch character Mercy during the time when they were dating.

Musk who often hits headlines, has been in the news for his involvement with Twitter/X, his rumoured beef with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, or his outspoken views on his beloved video games. After the release of the biography, his private life has become more public.

Isaacson spent two years closely following the billionaire. His book offers exclusive insights into Musk's life, including a rather unusual detail involving one of his children's names.

Additionally, Isaacson spoke about Musk's passion for gaming and how it reflected in his romantic life.

Musk once requested his ex-girlfriend, Heard, to dress up as the character Mercy from the game Overwatch. This unusual request reportedly came during the filming of DC's blockbuster movie Aquaman, in which Heard had a supporting role.

The biography does not mention Musk's reasons for making this request, but it suggests that Musk saw a resemblance between Amber Heard and the Overwatch character Mercy.

The book doesn't delve too much into Musk's choice, but it is interesting to note that Mercy is a character known for promoting peace in the game. She possesses a unique mix of offensive and defensive abilities, making her a popular choice among Overwatch 2 players.

While Musk and Heard did not comment on the detail mentioned in the biography, the owner of X confirmed the claim by sharing a photo of Heard dressed as Mercy on Wednesday on the micro-blogging site. Musk replied to a user commenting on the news by simply sharing Heard's image, thereby confirming the news.

Musk replied to a user commenting on the news by simply sharing Heard's image, thereby confirming the news. pic.twitter.com/SCuP5pZRCY — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 13, 2023 × WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Elon Musk and his former partner Grimes privately welcomed their third child, the tech mogul confirmed on his social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter).

Musk acknowledged the child's existence after the child's name was mentioned in an upcoming biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson.

Prior to this revelation, it was known that Musk and the artist "Miss Anthropocene" had a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter.

In an X post, Musk revealed that their youngest child is named Tau Techno Mechanicus.

Isaacson's book, however, mentions the child's legal name as Techno Mechanicus Musk, with the nickname Tau.

According to an advance copy of Musk's biography cited by Business Insider, the child was born via surrogate in June 2022.

Meaning of the name of Elon Musk's latest child

The nickname Tau is derived from "the Greek letter representing the irrational number that is equal to two times pi," with the approximate numerical value, 6.28, also coincidentally relating to Musk's birthday, June 28.

Know why Elon Musk’s father Erol fears his son might be at risk of ‘assassination’

Parag Agarwal, the former chief executive of Twitter, now known as 'X', was fired after a dinner with Elon Musk. During the course of that dinner, Musk purportedly figured out that Agarwal was not the 'fire-breathing dragon' that the billionaire business magnate thought the platform needed.

Musk and Agarwal went on dinner months before the former's buyout of Twitter for $44 billion.

This was disclosed by author Walter Isaacson, who spent three years following Elon Musk for his next biography Elon Musk.

"He's a nice guy," said Musk, but one of his maxims is that managers should not aim to be liked, Isaacson wrote, as per the Wall Street Journal which published excepts of the book.

"What Twitter needs is a fire-breathing dragon, and Parag is not that," Musk is quoted as saying by Isaacson after the meeting.

According to Isaacson, Bret Taylor, the chairperson of Twitter's board at the time, was also present in the dinner meeting.

Musk and Agarwal later exchanged messages after the meeting, which were released in September 2022 as part of the lawsuit Twitter filed against Musk.

"Hey Elon - great to be connected directly. Would love to chat," Agrawal wrote in a message to Musk dated March 27, 2022. This was swiftly responded to with "Great dinner :)," by Musk.

But a month later, Musk while apparently lounging in Hawaii, tweeted: "Most of these 'top' accounts tweet rarely and post very little content. Is Twitter dying?"

Ninety minutes later, Agarwal texted Musk, acknowledging Musk's right to share his Twitter thoughts but cautioning that it was not benefiting Twitter's current situation.

This rivalry and dissatisfaction between the two prominent figures persisted both privately and on Twitter until Musk's tweet declared, "I won't join the board. This is a futile effort. I'll propose taking Twitter private."

An agreement to privatise Twitter was eventually reached in October 2022, and one of Musk's initial actions was to fire Agrawal.

Parag Agarwal met Elon Musk over dinner, then he was fired as Twitter CEO, reveals biography

Elon Musk has always bragged about how user privacy has always come first at X, formerly known as Twitter. According to a Bloomberg report, the social media site is now planning to gather users’ biometric information and educational background. This is a section of X’s revised privacy statement, which will be put into effect starting on September 29.

According to the report, biometrics are only required for premium subscribers. Additionally, they will have the choice to submit a photocopy of their government ID for verification. For matching purposes, the biometric information may be derived from both the ID and the photos.

A spokeswoman for X responded to Bloomberg’s inquiry regarding the update’s motivation by saying, “This will additionally help us tie, for those that choose, an account to a real person by processing their government-issued ID. This will also help X fight impersonation attempts and make the platform more secure.”

According to X’s amended policy, “Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes.” Notably, this doesn’t specify exactly what information falls under the category of biometric data, which typically includes traits like a person’s face or fingerprints. X has not specified how it intends to gather this information.

According to X’s policy, educational information and employment history will be gathered to recommend possible positions to users. “We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, and so on) to recommend potential jobs for you, to share with potential employers when you apply for a job, to enable employers to find potential candidates, and to show you more relevant advertising.”

Intriguingly, X recently established an official handle @Xhiring, implying that it is also entering the job search vertical. The platform now enables verified businesses to post job vacancies on their profiles as a beta feature of X.

Musk has promised that users will soon be able to make audio and video calls on the platform without a phone number since he is fully committed to making X an all-encompassing app. This function will work with iOS, Android, Mac, and PC.
