US President Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 20) repeated his claims that India has assured him that it would stop oil trade with Russia to court US favours. US President Donald Trump said that two surviving "narcoterrorists" from a semi-submersible vessel destroyed by the US military in the Caribbean will be sent to their home countries of Ecuador and Colombia, Al Jazeera reported. "It was my great honour to destroy a very large DRUG-CARRYING SUBMARINE that was navigating towards the United States on a well-known narcotrafficking transit route," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday. He said that US intelligence has confirmed the vessel was carrying fentanyl and other narcotics. The vessel was targeted on Thursday in what Trump described as a strike aimed at disrupting a major drug trafficking route. Two crew members were killed, he said, while two others survived and were airlifted by US forces in a helicopter rescue operation to a nearby US Navy warship. The US military held the survivors on board at least until Friday evening, as per Al Jazeera. The press office for Ecuador's government said it was not aware of the plans for repatriation. There was no immediate comment from Colombian authorities. The president has justified the strikes by asserting that the United States is engaged in an "armed conflict" with drug cartels. He is relying on the same legal authority used by the administration of former President George W Bush when it declared a war on terrorism after the September 11 attacks on the US. This includes the ability to capture and detain combatants and use lethal force to take out their leadership. Trump is also treating the suspected traffickers as if they were enemy soldiers in a traditional war, Al Jazeera reported. At least six vessels, most of them speedboats, have been targeted by US strikes in the Caribbean since September, with Venezuela alleged to be the origin of some of them. Washington says its campaign is dealing a decisive blow to drug trafficking, but it has provided no evidence that the people killed were drug smugglers. With Trump's confirmation of the death toll on his Truth Social platform, that means US military actions against vessels in the region have killed at least 29 people. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. In Chicago, the epicentre of Trump’s immigration crackdown, demonstrators waved upside-down American flags alongside Mexican and Pride flags, carrying homemade signs and "Hands Off Chicago" posters. Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday (Oct 15) let slip something startling: the Trump administration is, in the US VP's own words, “retraining the entire government” to focus on “left-wing violence.” While making an appearance on 'The Charlie Kirk Show' Vance was holding a discussion on the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. US President Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 13) praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his role in ending the two-year Gaza war, but couldn’t resist including a few jabs in his speech to the Israeli Parliament, Knesset. Trump hailed the agreement as “a historic dawn of a new Middle East” while speaking to Israeli lawmakers after the groundbreaking announcement of a ceasefire and hostage exchange deal between Israel and Hamas, after two years of war.
Trump roasts Netanyahu
Trump, in his usual style, spent most of his speech reading prepared remarks, but couldn't resist going off script and ended up trolling Netanyahu. Also read | Ex-journalist Pete Hegseth mocks press as US media revolts against Pentagon’s gag order: ‘Press no longer roams free’“I want to express my gratitude to a man of exceptional courage and patriotism, whose partnership did so much to make this momentous day possible,” Trump said. “You know who I’m talking about, there’s only one, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” he said, urging the leader popularly known as Bibi to stand and accept applause. But then the US president quickly went off-script. “And he is not easy,” Trump joked, adding, “I want to tell you, he’s not the easiest guy to deal with.”“But that’s what makes him great,” added Trump almost in hindsight, before quipping that Netanyahu could “be a little nicer because you’re not at war anymore.”The comments appeared to reflect frustrations reportedly growing inside the White House over Netanyahu’s conduct during the Gaza war — including a surprise Israeli strike on Qatar, a key US ally.In one of the more striking moments, Trump told the Knesset: “Bibi, you’re going to be remembered for this far more than if you kept this thing going, going, going, kill, kill, kill.”Also read | MI5 issues chilling warning to UK MPs: China, Russia, Iran spies trying to 'erode the foundations of our sovereignty'He also poked fun at Netanyahu’s lengthy speech before him, saying he had been kept “quite late” by the prime minister’s “brilliant but very long remarks.”“I thought I was going to run up here, make a speech, and then head to Egypt,” Trump said, referring to the Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, attended by more than 20 world leaders.
Trump demands a pardon for close ally Bibi
However, not all of Trump's comments were digs. Donald Trump Calls for New Era of Harmony in West Asia; Says Gaza Deal Opens Door to 'Rebuilding'

Several major US news organisations have refused to sign a new Pentagon policy that limits journalists’ access to defense facilities and requires them to pledge not to obtain “unauthorised” information - aka not pursue investigative journalism. The Defense Department, led by Secretary Pete Hegseth, has given reporters until Tuesday (Oct 14) 5pm to sign the pledge or turn in their press credentials within 24 hours. The policy also bars journalists from entering certain areas without official escorts.
US media refuses to bow down
The Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, the Atlantic, the Guardian, and Breaking Defense said Monday they would not comply. The outlets called the move unconstitutional and an attack on press freedom.Washington Post executive editor Matt Murray, in a statement, said the policy “undercuts First Amendment protections by placing unnecessary constraints on gathering and publishing information. We will continue to vigorously and fairly report on the policies and positions of the Pentagon and officials across the government.”The Atlantic said it “fundamentally” opposes the restrictions. The New York Times added that the public “has a right to know how the government and military are operating,” noting that the US military is "funded by nearly $1 trillion in taxpayer dollars annually".
Pete Hegseth mocks press
Hegseth, a former Fox News host, responded on X with a hand waving goodbye emoji and a post mocking critics with a list of what he called “Press Credentialing FOR DUMMIES,” and saying that "Press no longer roams free; Press must wear visible badge; Credentialed press no longer permitted to solicit criminal acts".

Even some right-leaning outlets balked at the prospect of signing the letter. Newsmax told the Times it “has no plans to sign the letter,” calling the rules “unnecessary and onerous.” But One America News, a staunchly pro-Trump network, accepted the terms. Host and former congressman Matt Gaetz said the outlet was “happy to follow these reasonable conditions.”
Just journalists having a meltdown?
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the backlash was exaggerated, claiming the policy only requires journalists to acknowledge its terms, not agree to them. He accused reporters of having a “full-blown meltdown” and insisted the rules are “what’s best for our troops and the national security of this country.”The Pentagon Press Association, which represents defense reporters, slamming the policy said it appears to be “designed to stifle a free press and potentially expose us to prosecution for simply doing our jobs”. It sends an unprecedented message of intimidation,” the group said, “unprecedented message of intimidation to everyone within the DoD, warning against any unapproved interactions with the press and even suggesting it’s criminal to speak without express permission – which plainly, it is not”.
