It was a disappointing batting performance from the Indian team as Suryakmar Yadav single-handedly propelled the team to a fighting total of 133 runs after a disastrous start. While the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli failed to deliver, the middle-order too was non-existent for India against a quality Proteas pace attack.

Suryakumar slammed a brilliant knock of 68 runs off just 40 balls but failed to find support from the other end. India were reeling at 49/5 at one stage in their innings when Suryakumar joined hands with Dinesh Karthik to steady the ship with a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket.

However, Karthik, who managed only 6 runs off 15 balls failed to deliver and got out trying to play a big shot at the wrong time. Karthik has been backed by the team management as the designated finisher and first-choice keeper batter ahead of Rishabh Pant, however, he has failed to live up to the expectations.

Gambhir lashed out at the veteran wicket-keeper batter after his poor show against South Africa and said he lacks clarity when asked to play with 7-8 overs remaining and is only good for death overs.

"What is Dinesh Karthik's problem? If he gets a lot of balls to face, he is not able to figure out the tempo at which he has to bat. If he gets just 10-`12 balls, then there is clarity in his mind. He is then able to take on the bowlers. If there are 7-8 overs remaining, then he doesn't have clarity over whether he should rotate the strike or block," Gambhir said on&nbsp;Star Sports.

The former India opener also slammed the 37-year-old for failing to rotate the strike during his partnership with Suryakumar against South Africa on&nbsp;Sunday and said he was neither able to steal singles nor hit proper shots during his innings.

"With the experience that Dinesh Karthik has, it's important that he figures out the tempo and the time to attack. He can attack any bowler, he has all the shots in the book. He is a finisher too. But there are situations when your team is 5 down in the first 10 overs, then does he have the temperament to bat accordingly and build a partnership, go at run-a-ball and give yourself a chance to attack the bowlers at the death. He got out at the wrong time. But even if you had looked at him before that, he didn't look confident during that knock. He didn't have any tempo to his batting. Neither did he rotate the strike nor did he play confident shots," added Gambhir.

Karthik picked up an injury while keeping wickets in the game against the Proteas and is likely to miss India's next Super 12 clash against Bangladesh. Pant can be his direct replacement in the playing if he misses out.

India have gotten off to a flying start in the tournament with two wins in their first two games and will be hoping to maintain their winning streak in the third Super 12 clash against the Proteas.

Karthik has been India's first-choice wicket-keeper batter so far in the tournament but hasn't got too many chances to impress as he bats in the lower-middle order as the team's designated finisher. While he hasn't batted enough, he hasn't been flawless while keeping wickets.

Speaking ahead of the crucial clash against South Africa, Kapil India should look at playing Pant as he will provide a left-hand option in the middle order and his wicket-keeping can be like a breath of fresh air for the team making it look complete.

"I want to say that since we have Rishabh Pant, now is the time India need him. It felt as if Dinesh Karthik would get the job done, but factoring in the wicketkeeping as well, I feel that if India have that left-hander option in the team, this team would look complete," Kapil said on ABP News.

Kapil also backed struggling KL Rahul to find his form soon in the ongoing tournament. Rahul has looked completely out of touch in the first two games and has managed only 13 runs so far. The former India captain said Rahul needs to be patient at the top and take his time initially as he has the skills to accelerate when needed.

"He is a very neat cricketer. If you look at his batting, he doesn't appear to be struggling. He gets out and has in fact, played on twice or thrice. I want him to score runs because it is really important for him to score. Some players are told not to play fast. He can take time initially because he can easily accelerate as and when needed. I want him to play patiently, play the first 8-10 overs, and then when he gets an idea what total is best on the pitch, then go for it," said Kapil.

While gathering a powerful throw, he seemed to be in pain and took off his main gloves and looked at his 'inners'. 
In case of Pant, there was passion and anger of a youth in his batting session as Rahul Dravid spent the maximum time looking at his batting.

At times he treated Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj with utter disdain. At other times, he played and missed but didn't leave the nets.

On one of the coldest days in Perth, the focus of India's net session was Karthik's unique keeping drills under supervision of fielding coach T Dilip.

Blind Drill is a specific keeping exercise done to increase alertness as keepers get blindsided by batters when the ball comes to them at last the moment.

Dilip kept a couple of red and white markers at least four feet apart and put a white towel on them. As Karthik crouched behind the imaginary stumps, Dilip from the other kept an inclined plane used for giving sharp catches and hit the balls between the two road markers and in a manner that it gets deflected by the towel.

The towel is like a batter, who is covering the ball, and even if he misses it, the keeper would get a sight of the delivery at the last moment. This training is specially done to get the reflexes in order if someone like an Axar Patel, who bowls his deliveries at a quicker pace beats the bat.

Karthik had missed an easy stumping chance against the Netherlands as could watch the ball only when it had come near him at the last moment. The drill has two-fold benefits -&nbsp;it helps in making the reflexes quick and improves footwork.

The second set of the drill was with the big kit bag after removing the marker. Now Dilip was hurling the ball down the leg-side and a crouched Karthik needed deft footwork even if he is wrong-footed and gather the wide leg-side balls when bowlers lose their line.

Later, Karthik practiced catches off awkward edges. Here, the team used a special rubber bat with rough and rugged edges. The moment the ball hits those rugged cuts, it could fly in any direction -&nbsp;inside edge, outside edge, lob on-front, or just nosedive.

It was mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who batted left-handed during the drills. In fact coach Rahul Dravid had instructed net bowlers (spinners) to bowl fast and quick into the stumps when Karthik was keeping.

"We got an instruction from Indian coaches to flight it less and bowl fast and keep it within stumps without much turn for Karthik to keep. We are not used to bowling this quick in Grade cricket but it was good fun," said one of the net bowlers Khilesh.

As Karthik did his drills, Pant batted and batted at the other nets. One could gauge he is hurting. You are not a champion player if you are not hurt by snub.

After the two-hour session, when everyone thought he was packing his kits, he took out his keeping gear and asked Nuwan Senaviratne to give him throwdowns for another 15 minutes.

Veteran wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik has managed to spark an incredible turnaround in his international career this year as he finds himself in India's final 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. It was not too long back when Karthik had taken up commentary but never gave up on his dream of representing India in the T20 World Cup 2022.

Karthik took the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 by storm with his brilliant performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) earlier this year before making his stunning comeback for the Indian team after almost three years. Karthik has since cemented his spot in the team as a finisher in T20Is and is set to play a key role at the World Cup next month.

He has made it to India's squad for the World Cup as a specialist finisher after his impressive performances this year and took to Twitter to thank his IPL franchise for the support. Karthik thanked RCB fans and the support staff for helping him in his redemption journey.

BCCI announced India's 15-man squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Monday evening (September 12). As expected, the main squad comprises all the big guns who featured in the Asia Cup but also saw the return of premier pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.

Former Indian captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar opened up on India's squad for the showpiece event, in Australia from October-November, and named the star player who can be Men in Blue's finisher. While the squad features some known finishers such as Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant, Vengsarkar feels Suryakumar Yadav can do the tough job at the forthcoming ICC event.

"I can’t really comment on who bats at what number. It is up to the think tank, the coach, the captain and the vice-captain. But I feel Suryakumar Yadav, who is batting at 4, can bat at 5 as well. He can be a great finisher," Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"T20 is not like ODIs and Test cricket, where you need certain batters at certain positions. In this format, anybody can bat anywhere. You don’t have time to settle down. One should go after the bowlers from ball one," he opined.

SKY ended the Asia Cup with 139 runs -- eighth-highest overall&nbsp;and second-most among Indians -- including a breathtaking 26-ball 68 not out versus Hong Kong.

India failed to defend a total of 173 runs as they suffered their second straight defeat in the Super Four stage of the tournament.

It was a fine all-round performance from Sri Lanka as they stunned the defending champions at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. Sharing his take on India's decision to pick Karthik ahead of Pant, a surprised Gambhir said the team should not experiment too much with a handful of T20 matches left ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year. Gambhir believes having Karthik over Pant makes India's batting line-up one-dimensional due to the lack of a left-hander.

"I won't experiment from now on because how many games do we have… this Asia Cup? And then you've got what… five more games, six more games and then the World Cup. From now on, you want a settled Playing XI. Yes, you can have your backups as well but that is the way I would have wanted.
