A ceiling plaster collapsed at a private paying guest (PG) accommodation in South Delhi’s South Extension on Sunday (October 4). The incident has again raised questions over the safety of students living in Delhi’s PGs, despite assurances that stricter checks were carried out following the Satya Niketan building collapse. A first-year student of Delhi College of Arts and Commerce was present in his room when the incident occurred at nearly 11 pm on Sunday. During the incident, a large portion of the ceiling plaster fell on his bed. In response, the first-year student said that he was studying while the ceiling plaster fell, which could have injured him severely if he had been on the bed. Also read: Maharashtra to cut water supply by 10% from October 16 as drought concerns grow
No refund of security deposits for PG
The student added that a ceiling fan had also fallen on his bed nearly 15 days ago. Another student responded that a geyser in a bathroom had earlier exploded after a short circuit. Students expressed that these recurring incidents had left them living in constant fear. They also claimed that PG operators were refusing to refund their security deposits unless they completed the full six-month tenure. Following the most recent incident, the students approached the police and posted a video on social media documenting the state of their accommodation. In the video, they appealed to the government and relevant authorities to crack down more firmly on PG operators. This latest incident follows the government's earlier directive mandating safety inspections across PGs and hostels in the wake of the Satya Niketan tragedy, with the Municipal Corporation having already conducted surveys to flag illegal construction and other violations.

Delhi police have raised safety concerns related to fire risks around three months prior to the collapse of a multi-storey hostel in Satya Niketan in the South Delhi locality last Sunday that claimed the lives of seven people. The raised concern came after the launch of inspections with expected tragedy that exposed regulatory gaps, loopholes in enforcement and general civic negligence in the national capital, a fire that tore through a bed and breakfast in Hauz Rani, killing 23 people. The fact that this warning seems to have gone unheeded shows how Delhi's response to such tragedies falls drastically short of any real change, following the now-familiar pattern of inspections, inquiries, lists of violations, and promises of action that rarely translate into results. Also read: From Bihar’s sattu to Koraput coffee, here's what is inside the BRICS media kit
Labourer warned about structural risk
In another development, the investigation has also revealed that one of the labourers had reportedly warned the accused against breaking a load-bearing wall. H1N1 influenza cases are rising sharply in Delhi, with more than 1,300 cases reportedly recorded in the national capital, nearly six times the number reported during the same period last year.

Doctors say most H1N1 infections are generally mild, with fever often subsiding within three to five days. However, elderly people, children and those with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease may face a higher risk of complications.

Common symptoms include sore throat, nasal discharge, dry cough, headache and fever. Health authorities have advised affected individuals to isolate at home, wear masks and follow basic hygiene precautions.

The government has also issued a public advisory urging people to cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, wash their hands regularly, avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth, and stay away from crowded places when symptomatic.

People have also been advised not to take medicines without consulting a doctor and to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen, particularly in cases of high fever, breathing difficulties, bluish skin or lips, or blood in the sputum.

Delhi Police arrested a Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force (IAF) two months ago for reportedly leaking sensitive information. This comes after the Wing Commander had fallen victim to a “honey trap” orchestrated by Pakistani intelligence officers. The officer was arrested under provisions of the Official Secrets Act for providing sensitive defence-related information and is currently in judicial custody. Citing unnamed sources in Delhi Police, the Indian Express reported that the arrest pointed to a larger counterintelligence network focused on gathering strategic military intelligence. During the 'honey trap', the officer reportedly installed data-stealing software on a colleague’s smartphone to gain access to the device. The Wing Commander was taken into custody on the night of May 31, after the IAF's intelligence wing passed on specific information about the case to Delhi Police. “Initially, he was taken into police custody after his arrest. He was later sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail. He has been booked under the provisions of the Official Secrets Act for sharing classified information and confidential documents related to national defence,” the Delhi police sources told Indian Express. Also read: ‘Fake news’: MEA rejects report claiming India sought defence pact with Israel after Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey deal
How IAF officer fell prey to 'honey trap'?
The IAF spokesperson said, “He was under active surveillance and was handed over to the suitable law enforcement agencies.” Police investigation into the matter has so far shown that the officer was going through a rough patch in his personal life when a woman reached out to him on social media. “He started chatting with her and began speaking to her over video calls. After gradually gaining his trust, she asked him to share photos, videos, and information on the movement and deployment of military units,” officials familiar with the probe said. They also revealed that the probe uncovered that the officer had reportedly shared "crucial documents and data" with the woman via digital communication channels. “After obtaining details from him, he was asked to install a particular app on his colleague’s phone, which is typically a form of targeted spyware or remote-access malware designed to steal device data, track locations, or intercept communications,” the officials said. Officials further stated the woman was reportedly acting on instructions from handlers based in Pakistan. The operation appeared to be part of a broader espionage network focused on gathering strategic military intelligence. Investigators are now examining whether the shared information could have posed a threat to national security or was meant to enable hostile activity within India. They also said they suspect the woman may have been part of a coordinated honey-trap operation aimed at targeting defence personnel to extract classified information. The probe is now centred on tracking "the digital trail of the communication." "We are also identifying the overseas handlers allegedly involved and determining the extent of the information that may have been compromised," the officials also said.

The Wing Commander was taken into custody on the night of May 31, after the IAF's intelligence wing passed on specific information about the case to Delhi Police.
