Speaking to WION, Ponting insisted he is not with Delhi Capitals to just take part in the IPL but to win the tournament. The former Australia captain said it remains one of his biggest goals to take Delhi Capitals to their maiden title and give the players a chance to pull off something special this season.

"Yes, and we have been close. We have been close in the last few seasons. We lost the final two seasons back and finished on top of the table last year but unfortunately, we lost our two playoffs games to go out but absolutely. I am not here to just participate in the tournament that's one thing I have told the boys all the time and everyone here at this franchise is we are not here to just participate, we are here to win," Ponting said in an exclusive interaction with WION.

"Delhi Capitals has never won the IPL. That's a big responsibility and a big goal of mine to give these players every possible chance to achieve something special at the end of the tournament," added the Delhi Capitals head coach.

"It has been an extraordinary tournament already. Coming towards the end of my career when T20 cricket first burst onto the scene, I remember Australia playing New Zealand in the first-ever T20 international game, I must admit back then I thought that t20 cricket at the international level was going to be a showpiece to try and promote the other formats of the game. But look it has grown and grown. I am really staggered at how IPL finds a way to continue to grow year on year.," Ponting said when asked how IPL has changed the way cricket was played.

"The TV rights (of the IPL) they are up soon and I am sure there is going to be a huge war there to see who bags the television rights. I think as a result of how successful the IPL has been through a long period of time, every other country is now trying to mimic or do exactly what the IPL has done," explained.

The former Aussie skipper, who led his country to back-to-back ODI World Cup triumphs in 2003 and 2007 while also winning several other major tournaments as a leader, said he has enjoyed some of the best moments of his career in the IPL.

Leading Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final in 2020 and helping them top the table last year are some of the achievements which Ponting counts among the best he has achieved in his career.

"It has been awesome, and great to be a part of the tournament. I have been part of the IPL for probably 7-8 years now and it has been some of the best times I have had. Leading this franchise into the final and then finishing on top of the table last year, those are some of the best moments I have had in the game and I have been lucky to win World Cups and do pretty special things," said Ponting.

"But when you are here part of this tournament and you have success here, it certainly ranks higher among all other things I have achieved in the game," he added.

“There have been a lot of comparisons between Rishabh and Adam Gilchrist already and the reason is because their batting is very similar. They are not always going to play conventionally but when it works, they will be winning you matches. Injury-ravaged India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has got the all-clear to lead Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL after a general assessment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he bowled and also passed the 'Yo-Yo' Test comfortably.

The BCCI is checking on all its centrally contracted players -- injured or otherwise -- before the IPL and Pandya's performance, during his two days at the NCA, can also be seen as a good sign for Indian cricket.

"Let's make it clear. Fitness test clearance is only for those who are coming back from injury. In case of Hardik, it was about getting a general fitness assessment going into the gruelling IPL season," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

In fact, in his fitness assessment module, the NCA team didn't even mandate him to bowl but the all-rounder apparently "insisted" on it to show that he is on track to make a comeback into the Indian team.

"He didn't need to bowl at NCA but he has bowled for considerable time and in the range of 135 kmph. On the second day, he crossed the Yo-Yo test with flying colours with a 17-plus score which is much above the cut-off level," the source said.

However, as per information received one player, who would be slightly disappointed with his current fitness status is out-of-favour opener Prithvi Shaw.

The former U-19 World Cup winning captain, who is not a part of the central contract was also at the NCA to provide an update on his fitness status and the result wasn't exactly satisfactory.

The current Yo-Yo test qualification score is 16.5 for men and it has been learnt that the Mumbai opener has scored less than 15.

"These are just fitness updates. Obviously, it doesn't stop Prithvi from playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL. It's just a fitness parameter and not the be all and end all," the source said.

"Look, he has played three Ranji matches back-to-back. Once you play three first-class games on the bounce, the fatigue can also affect your Yo-Yo score," he added.

IPL franchise Delhi Capitals on Tuesday appointed former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as an assistant coach for the upcoming season of the league.

The 40-year-old joins the DC coaching staff comprising Ricky Ponting (Head Coach), Pravin Amre (Assistant Coach), Ajit Agarkar (Assistant Coach) and James Hopes (Bowling Coach).

"The IPL, the best T20 tournament in the world. I've got incredible memories as a player, first of all with Rajasthan Royals winning it in 2008, led by the incredible man Shane Warne, RCB and then CSK," Watson said in a statement issued by DC.

“It’s a new cycle of the IPL, and we can’t wait to see our players in this brand new jersey,” said Vinod Bisht, Interim CEO, Delhi Capitals.

In the three games, Iyer got an opportunity to bat at No. 3 in Virat Kohli's absence and made the most of his chances to remain unbeaten throughout the series. While Iyer shifts his focus on the two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka, which gets underway on March 04 in Mohali, he reflected back on his journey with the Delhi Capitals (DC), having made his IPL debut for the franchise in 2015. After a shoulder injury in early 2021, the right-hander couldn't take part in the first leg of IPL 2021 and eventually lost the captaincy to Rishabh Pant for the whole season. With DC willing to continue with Pant as the captain, Iyer wasn't retained and has now been bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2022 edition.

“Injury,” Iyer said in a recent interaction -- with Times of India -- on being asked what was the bigger blow between injury and losing DC captaincy. “That was a bigger low. If that didn't happen, they wouldn't have stepped me down as a captain. At Delhi Capitals, you saw the reflection of the environment at the start of 2021, which we created in 2019 &amp; 20. The atmosphere was amazing. The players knew each other inside out, their strengths and weaknesses. I don't want to get deeper into it," stated Iyer.

Under Iyer, DC had reached their first-ever playoffs after nine years in IPL 2019. In addition, the franchise played their maiden&nbsp;final during&nbsp;IPL 2020 season -- during Iyer's captaincy --&nbsp;held in the UAE.

He further asserted on his injury, "Sometimes things just happen for the better. It's just that we come to know about it later. I was on a roll right in New Zealand (in early 2020) and began feeling really confident of myself and my batting. As captain, I had an amazing season going in the IPL and I scored some 500 runs (in 2020 edition). I was in a good frame of mind and then that injury began playing on my mind. Forced breaks are never easy because you have to start all over again."

The recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction saw the ten teams build their squads almost from scratch and rope in some quality cricketers from around the globe in their respective sides. While Indian fast bowlers went for big money, some overseas stars also turned out to be costly picks at the mega auction.&nbsp;

Indian wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan was the most expensive buy at the IPL 2022 mega auction after going to his former side Mumbai Indians for a whopping Rs 15.25 crore (INR 152.5 million), making him the second-most expensive player in the history of IPL auctions.

The auction kept cricket fans across the globe hooked to their television screens as it produced some thrilling bidding wars between the ten teams.&nbsp;Noted presenter and broadcaster Charu Sharma won the hearts of many with his amazing work as an auctioneer after he had to replace Hugh Edmeades, who had an abrupt fall on day 1 and had to be provided immediate medical attention.

While Sharma went about his business with poise and confidence, he ended up making a big goof-up on day 2 of the IPL 2022 mega auction. The mistake took place when Delhi Capitals (DC)&nbsp;and Mumbai Indians (MI) were locked in a bidding war for Indian pacer Khaleel Ahmed.

As the bidding crossed the Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) mark, Mumbai Indians were the first to raise the bid to Rs 5.25 crore (INR 52.5 million). Sharma then asked Delhi Capitals if they were willing to up their bid to Rs 5.50 crore (INR 55 million). DC co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi were seen hesitatingly raising the paddle to up the bid while also having a discussion with the other members in the DC panel.

While the bid should have been raised to Rs 5.50 crore (INR 55 million), Sharma mistakenly announced that DC had the highest bid for the player at the previous amount of Rs 5.25 crore (INR 52.5 million). Khaleel was eventually sold to DC for the same amount, however, it was Mumbai Indians who had first bid that amount for the Indian pacer.

“When we looked at the value names, one of the names that stuck with us was Kuldeep Yadav. However, DC did manage to make some brilliant signings in the form of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.

While Delhi Capitals got Warner for a sum of Rs 6.25 crore (INR 62.5 million), they had to shell out Rs 6.5 crore (INR 65 million) for the services of Marsh. Delhi Capitals then went on to make some shrewd&nbsp;signings as they roped in the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav and KS Bharat for Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) each.

However, Delhi Capitals missed out on another important former player later in the day as Indian pacer Avesh Khan triggered a bidding war at the mega auction. A number of teams jumped in the battle for Avesh, who was the second-highest wicket-taker of IPL 2021 with 24 wickets in 16 matches.

Delhi Capitals co-owner revealed Avesh was one player captain Rishabh Pant wanted the team to buy back at the auction.

Jindal said he was quite happy with the work done by the team on day one of the IPL 2022 mega auction. However, he revealed Pant really wanted Avesh, who went out of the team's budget during the bidding war.

"Yeah, I think, very satisfied [how the squad has shaped up till now]. I think we have a very good balance. We filled up most of our starting XI spots, we have a little bit of work to do going into tomorrow especially in the back-ups and making sure that we have a very good and solid squad. But overall I think we have some really really sensational players to compliment the four retained players," Jindal said talking to DCTV.

"I have been in touch with Rishabh, he is also really happy with most of the squad. Although he did really want Avesh Khan, we tried but again it went way beyond our budget but I think we have a very good squad that can challenge for the playoffs and hopefully go better," he added.

For the unversed, Avesh had a breath-through season in IPL 2021 edition, accounting for a total of 24 wickets -- second-most overall --&nbsp;at an average of 18.75. He, thus, played a key role in taking Pant &amp; Co. to the playoffs. He, however, wasn't retained by Delhi camp as they went ahead and retained Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje.

DC, surprisingly, also didn't bid for Avesh; having already invested a huge sum on several players.

Prior to the mega auction proceedings, R Ashwin -- Avesh's ex-DC teammate -- had predicted a huge bidding war for the young speedster.&nbsp;"There is definitely going to be a bidding war for Avesh Khan. No doubt about that. Guarantee. Just like how Vijay Mallya fought for me with CSK in 2010, I can picture a Parth Jindal or a Kiran Rao fighting it out for Avesh Khan this year. With whom will they fight? Well, that might be any team," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Surely, many are highly&nbsp;impressed with Avesh as he will now look to replicate his previous season's performance in the Rahul-led Lucknow franchise.

CSK spent Rs 6.75 crore (INR 67.5 million) to secure Rayudu's services for the upcoming season. CSK then went on to make Indian pacer Deepak Chahar their most expensive signing in IPL history.

"This mega auction is always a big challenge, especially when two new teams are there. We know that there will be a lot of competition, we know that some franchises will be having more money, and that's when all the expertise and all the auction experience will count," Amre in an official release.&nbsp;

"A lot of study has to be done, it's not going to be that easy, and I think it's all about the preparation. It's really important to be prepared for all the challenges that are going to come, so these are very important factors, especially in a mega auction," he added.&nbsp;

Speaking about head coach Ricky Ponting and Captain Rishabh Pant's involvement in the mega auction process, the 54-year-old said, "Eventually, it is the captain and the coach who put up the side in the IPL. It's very important to have that kind of exchange of ideas with them because whatever we as a scouting team offer, will come in handy and become extremely effective if it has synergy with the head coach and the captain, so in that sense, it's been excellent."
