Euro 2024: Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo becomes most-capped player in men's international football

Portugal begins European Championship qualifying under a new coach Roberto Martinez and Cristiano Ronaldo still in the squad. It will be Ronaldo's first appearance with Portugal since leaving Europe for Saudi club Al Nassr after a mostly disappointing stint with Manchester United.

Cristiano Ronaldo is 'happy' to be back for Portugal under new coach Roberto Martinez

Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo reveals he do not regret leaving the club after what transpired between him and the manager Erik ten Hag, saying that particular episode made him a better man. During last year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, United terminated Ronaldo’s contract following his explosive interview with famous British journalist Piers Morgan where he openly bashed the club, manager and its owners.

After Portugal got knocked out in the quarters, Ronaldo didn't have a club to represent. He later joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr in a world-record breaking deal where he would earn more than 200 million euros ($214.04 million) till 2025.

However, ahead of Portugal’s Euro Qualifier against Liechtenstein on March 24th, Ronaldo finally broke his silence on the exit from Old Trafford, where he not only became a legend after his first run, but he also became the top-scorer across all competitions upon his home coming at the Red Devils in 2021. The star forward said he doesn’t have any regrets, and whatever happened made him realise who are his true friends. He also added the particular episode made him a better person.

"Sometimes, you have to go through some things to see who is on my side. I have no problem saying, I had a bad career run, but there’s no time for regrets. Life goes on and, doing well or not, it was part of my growth,” said Ronaldo as quoted by Manchester Evening News.

"When we are at the top of the mountain, we often cannot see what is below. Now, I’m more prepared and learning that was important, because I had never been through this, like in the last few months. Now I’m a better man," Ronaldo added.

Meanwhile, for the first time since December last year, Ronaldo will be seen playing for Portugal. Since taking over the role from Fernando Santos, Portugal’s new coach Roberto Martínez added 38-year-old Ronaldo in the squad, who is most likely to play whole 90 minutes.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who is completely committed to the national team,” Martínez said. “I don’t look at age or other aspects. He has the chance to help the team and pass on his experience to other players.”

British reality TV star Tommy Fury beat American YouTuber Jake Paul on points Sunday in a boxing spectacle intended to boost Saudi Arabia's reputation as a top-flight fight destination.

Despite suffering a knockdown in the eighth and final round of the cruiserweight contest, Fury won a split decision to the delight of Saudi fans, who shouted "Let's go Tommy" in the closing stages.

Addressing the crowd through tears afterwards, Fury, who is the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, but better known for his turn on the dating show Love Island - declared he had "made my own legacy" with the win.

Paul, who calls himself "The Problem Child", drew loud boos with his post-fight claim that he "got sick really bad twice in this camp" and "injured my arm", though he added he was "not making excuses".

He told reporters that Fury had "impressive combinations" but that the loss was "a reflection of my own performance".

"I couldn't get my momentum going like I wanted to and I just felt kind of flat," he said.

A triumphant Fury, for his part, boasted that he "showed everybody that I ain't scared of no one and I can cut it in the big dance."

Paul first gained fame and millions of followers on the now-defunct social media platform Vine and also YouTube before pivoting to boxing about five years ago.

His 6-0 record heading into Sunday's fight, including four knockouts, had come against a ragtag group of opponents that included another YouTuber and three mixed martial arts fighters.

He was out to bolster his credibility against Fury, who was likewise undefeated, though his past opponents were also hardly household names.

The two men's unusual backgrounds have led many observers to question whether either should be taken seriously.

Saudi officials nevertheless pitched Sunday's event as a sign of the kingdom's growing clout in the boxing world.

The crowd Sunday included former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, comedian Kevin Hart and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now playing club football in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi officials say there has been a surge of domestic interest in boxing in recent years, with the number of boxing gyms rising from seven to 59.

British reality TV star Tommy Fury beat American YouTuber Jake Paul on points Sunday in a boxing spectacle intended to boost Saudi Arabia's reputation as a top-flight fight destination.

A triumphant Fury, for his part, boasted that he "showed everybody that I ain't scared of no one and I can cut it in the big dance." Paul first gained fame and millions of followers on the now-defunct social media platform Vine and also YouTube before pivoting to boxing about five years ago. His 6-0 record heading into Sunday's fight, including four knockouts, had come against a ragtag group of opponents that included another YouTuber and three mixed martial arts fighters. The two men's unusual backgrounds have led many observers to question whether either should be taken seriously. Saudi officials nevertheless pitched Sunday's event as a sign of the kingdom's growing clout in the boxing world. 'Sportswashing' allegations It built on a 2019 fight billed as the "Clash on the Dunes", in which Anthony Joshua reclaimed his world heavyweight crown from Andy Ruiz, the first time a world heavyweight title fight had been staged in Saudi Arabia. Last year Joshua lost in a split decision to Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk in the "Rage on the Red Sea" in Jeddah. Their goal is to have 500,000 boxers in the kingdom by 2030. They have gloated about being able to stage the Paul-Fury clash after previous attempts to hold it in the United States fell through. "Paul versus Fury has taken a long time and it has finally been made, which is significant for the landscape of boxing in Saudi Arabia," Prince Khalid bin Abdulaziz told a pre-match press conference. Not former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo! Sergio Ramos feels Lionel Messi is the best footballer ever

Following his headline-making performance against Paris-Saint German in an exhibition match recently, Al-Nassr’s newest signing Cristiano Ronaldo finally made his Saudi Pro League debut on Sunday night against Al Ettifaq at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. Although he didn’t score on his debut for his new team, Al-Nassr’s coach Rudi Garcia heaped praises on the veteran for his impact on the field. Adding that Ronaldo’s presence is a big plus for the team, Rudi said Cristiano distracted the defenders that eventually helped them score a goal and win the match. With this victory, Al-Nassr has returned to the top of points table with 33 points.

Despite not getting enough rest after the PSG game where he scored twice, Ronaldo was instrumental in guiding Al-Nassr to a win against mid-table side Al Ettifaq. While Al-Nassr came close to scoring on a few occasions, it was their attacking mid-fielder Talisca who converted his chance into a goal in the 31st minute. Post win, club’s head coach Rudi Garcia shared encouraging words for Ronaldo saying, "It's a positive addition when you have a player like Ronaldo as he helps to distract the defenders, which is what happened with our goal."

Cristiano Ronaldo to receive a STAGGERING 400 million euros during his stint at Al-Nassr in Saudi: Report

Cristiano Ronaldo will serve his suspension before making his league debut for his new Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr but he could play against Paris St Germain in a friendly this month, coach Rudi Garcia has said. Ronaldo missed the first of two domestic games for Al Nassr on Friday after being suspended by England's Football Association (FA) for knocking a phone out of a fan's hand following Manchester United's defeat at Everton in April. Garcia confirmed the 37-year-old forward would also miss the league game against Al Shabab and make his debut against Ettifaq on Jan. 22 - unless he plays against Lionel Messi's PSG in a team made up of players from Al Nassr and Al Hilal in Riyadh on Jan. 19.

"It (his debut) won't be with the Al Nassr jersey. It will be a mix between Al Hilal and Al Nassr," Garcia was quoted as saying by L'Equipe. "As the coach of Al Nassr, I cannot be happy with this match. For development, to see PSG, to see the great Parisian players, indeed it is a good thing. But we have a championship game three days later.

"In terms of scheduling, it could have been better thought out. But it's not a big deal... We are in the lead, we are happy. It is a difficult championship to win, but we intend to do it."

Garcia said Ronaldo's arrival in Saudi Arabia was similar to Pele's move to New York Cosmos, shining the spotlight on the little-known Saudi club who have amassed more than 10 million new Instagram followers since his signing last month.

The former Lille and Olympique Lyonnais coach said he hopes Ronaldo rediscovers the enjoyment of playing football after a tumultuous two-month period during which his United contract was terminated and Portugal lost in the World Cup quarter-finals.

"In recent months, between Manchester United, the national team and also at a private level, he has not had easy moments," Garcia said.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr debut could be against Lionel Messi's PSG, says coach Rudi Garcia

After a record-breaking sensational move to Saudi Arabia from England, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines lately. The 37-year-old striker joined Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr FC from Manchester United in a deal where he is expected to earn more than 200 million Euros ($214.04 million) until 2025. Upon getting unveiled as a new Al Nassr player, everyone was looking forward to his debut against Al Tai on Friday, January 6th. That unfortunately didn’t happen, as Ronaldo, whose suspension by the English Football Association was pending following an incident where he threw a fan’s phone in the Premier League last year, came into act.

Sidelined for the game against Al Tai, Ronaldo at least ensured he’s watching the match live while training in the gym. As Al Nassr, who are currently leading the chart with 29 points from 12 matches, won the game with a score of 2-0, Ronaldo was seen enjoying his teammate - Tallisca’s second goal by clapping.

Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo faces a wait to make his Al Nassr debut because the Saudi club have exceeded their quota for foreign players, club sources told AFP on Thursday. When he was unveiled with great fanfare on Tuesday, the 37-year-old said he was keen to play as soon as possible, starting with Thursday's home game against Al Ta'ee. But Ronaldo, whose deal is worth an estimated 200 million euros to June 2025, is Al Nassr's ninth foreign player -- one more than the eight allowed by Saudi football authorities.

"Al Nassr has not registered him yet because there is no vacancy for a foreign player," one club official, who did not want to be named because he was not authorised to speak to media, told AFP. "A foreign player must leave to register Ronaldo, either by selling or by terminating the contract by mutual consent." Al Nassr's foreign contingent includes Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo and forwards Anderson Talisca of Brazil and Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon. Saudi reports said Uzbek midfielder Jaloliddin Masharipov was most likely to make way for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner and Champions League record scorer.

A second club source confirmed that Ronaldo was not registered as of Thursday afternoon local time. "There are ongoing negotiations to sell one of the players, but they have not reached their final stages yet," he said. Both officials refused to confirm whether Ronaldo still needed to serve a two-match English Football Association ban from November for hitting a mobile phone out of a teenage fan's hand after Manchester United, his club at the time, lost to Everton.

Cristiano Ronaldo's much-awaited Al Nassr debut on hold over player quota: Sources

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be making his Al Nassr debut on Thursday, having signed for the Riyadh based club earlier this week.

The Portuguese superstar was scheduled to play in his side's Saudi Pro League match against Al-Ta'ee. However, a two-match ban imposed by the England’s Football Association (FA) for smashing an Everton fan's phone last year means that Ronaldo will have to warm the bench, per a report by The Daily Mail.

The 37-year-old forward was storming down the tunnel of Goodison Park last season when he angrily smashed the boy's phone. Following an investigation by the FA, Ronaldo was handed a $60,000 (£50,000) fine and two-match ban.

Notably, the five-time Ballon d'Or player apologised to the boy after the match through an Instagram post.

"It's never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game," wrote Ronaldo.

"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship."

"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship." Cristiano Ronaldo signs two-and-a-half-year contract with Saudi’s Al-Nassr: Report

Pele, one of the greatest footballers of all time, passed away on Thursday (December 29) to make the sporting fraternity poorer. Battling cancer for quite sometime, the Brazilian legend suffered a lot in recent times and while he fought hard, his health had gone down severely during the recently-held Qatar World Cup. Known as the 'King of Soccer', Pele touched millions of hearts with his on-field skills, mesmerising moves, and World Cup heroics for Brazil.

Here are some facts about the great Pele:

1. Pele was named as Edson Arantes do Nascimento by his parents.

2. Pele was born on October 23rd, 1940 and was aged 82 at the time of passing away.

3. As Pele married thrice, he is survived by six children. During his final marriage, he tied the knot with a businesswoman named Marcia Aoki.
