After the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka, New Zealand has offered to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 if the money-spinning tournament can’t be held in India amid COVID-19 pandemic. With the postponement of T20 World Cup 2020 inevitable, a window has popped up for IPL with the BCCI zeroing in on the September-November window for the tournament.

While the Indian cricket board’s first choice of host will be India but with the rising cases of coronavirus, chances look grim. India has the third in the list to have most COVID-19 cases behind Brazil and the USA.

"Staging the event in India has to be the first choice but in case it is not safe to have it, then we will look at the overseas options.
After UAE and Sri Lanka, New Zealand has also offered to host the IPL," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"We will sit down with all stakeholders (broadcaster, teams, etc) and take a call. The safety of the players is paramount. There will be no compromise on that," the official said.

The IPL has been held abroad in the past with the UAE and South Africa being the hosts of the tournament previously. The 2009 edition was staged in South Africa due to general election and the UAE hosted a few matches in 2014 due to the same reason. However, in 2019, the BCCI did schedule the IPL in India while avoiding clashes with poll dates in different states.

Time difference a major issue with New Zealand

However, India has a seven and half hour time difference with New Zealand which could affect the viewership of matches. Even apart from Hamilton and Auckland, venues in Wellington, Christchurch, Napier and Dunedin will need air travel.

While the ICC is yet to officially announce the fate of T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15, latest reports suggest that the showpiece tournament will be deferred when ICC officials meet on Friday (July 10).

“There are rumours that the World Cup was clashing with the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Australia-India series, therefore, it (T20 World Cup) won’t take place,” Inzamam, who scored 8830 runs in 120 Tests and 11739 runs in 378 ODIs for Pakistan, said in his YouTube channel on Sunday.

“The Indian board is strong and has control in the International Cricket Council (ICC). If Australia says that we cannot hold the World Cup because of the COVID-19 pandemic, then their stance will be easily accepted, but if any such kind event happens during the same time, then questions will be raised,” he said.

Inzamam is of the view that ICC should not give priority to private leagues (IPL) over international cricket as it will lead to players focusing on private leagues rather than international cricket. However, he did agree that hosting 16 teams for the T20 World Cup is not an easy task.

ICC should not be allowed to give priority to private leagues: Inzamam-ul-Haq

“People will think, if a country could host 12 to 14 teams (16 teams), then why the ICC could not look after the teams after all Australia is such an advanced country. Another thing is the ICC should not be allowed to give priority to private leagues (IPL) on international cricket. This will lead to young players forcing on private leagues other than international matches.

“Australia can say that it was difficult for it to manage 18 teams (16) for the mega event as it is not easy. Likewise, the Pakistan team was in England in a hotel and all the facilities were being provided there, therefore, it has not been easy to manage 18 teams (16),” he said.

Even the fate of Asia Cup 2020 hangs in balance. The tournament was originally scheduled to be hosted in Pakistan but the PCB agreed on a neutral venue for security reasons. However, there has been no word on the fate of the tournament scheduled in September.

Inzamam said: “I have also heard that objections are also raised on the dates of the Asia Cup as it is clashing with some other event.

“The ICC, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and all cricket boards should sit together and give a strong message that any such kind of impression (giving priority to private leagues instead of international cricket), won’t take place,” he said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board and team are currently focused on their tour against England and have refused to comment on former batting coach Grant Flower's revelation regarding Younis Khan.

According to former Zimbabwe cricketer Grant Flower, who was Pakistan’s batting coach between 2014 and 2019, made a shocking claim as he said Younis Khan once disagreed with his batting tips so much that he brought a knife to his throat and then-Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur had to intervene.

“Younis Khan… quite tough to master,” said Flower on Following On Cricket Podcast. “Obviously, a brilliant career. I remember one incident in Brisbane, during the Test, at breakfast, I tried to give him a bit of batting advice, not that my career was anywhere near his regarding stats, as he is the highest scorer in Pakistan Test cricket.

Younis Khan is currently Pakistan's batting coach and he along with the board have refused to comment on the claim.

However, a source in the board told the PTI that the incident took place during 2016 tour of Australia and was not a serious case of a threat as hyped by Flower, it was just a friendly banter on the breakfast table.

“But the impression being spread by Grant Flower is not entirely true. Younis apparently had jokingly picked up the butter knife and waved it around telling Grant to just let him have his breakfast and not give advice at the breakfast table,” the source said.

The source said that it was saddening for the board to see their former staff disclose private information just to get attention. He said: “They also tend to add salt and pepper to incidents to grab headlines,”

West Indies coach Phil Simmons was told Wednesday he was in no danger of losing his job after the Barbados Cricket Association president said the former Test batsman should be sacked for attending his father-in-law's funeral.

Simmons is currently in self-isolation at the team's on-site hotel at Old Trafford ahead of next week's first Test against England at Southampton after being granted a request for compassionate leave before the squad left for Britain.

Simmons temporarily left the West Indies' protective bubble to attend the funeral, which took place in Britain.

Simmons has twice tested negative for the coronavirus and will rejoin the squad if he's given the all-clear following another test carried out on Wednesday.

But ahead of a Test series taking place against the backdrop of COVID-19, ESPNCricinfo revealed that BCA chief Conde Riley had written to Cricket West Indies president Ricky Skerritt lamenting an "inconsiderate and reckless" process as he called for Simmons' dismissal.

But Skerritt told a conference call: "I want to assure West Indies cricket fans that Phil Simmons still has the full backing of Cricket West Indies no matter what has been said.

"When all is said and done, Phil's job is not in any way threatened by that letter.

"He went through a very vigorous recruitment process nine months ago and was the best man we could have found for the job. He's still the best man."

Meanwhile Simmons, in his second stint as Windies coach, said: "This has not been an easy time for my family. My wife was very close to her father and his passing has hurt us. There was no question of me not going to the funeral.

"My wife, my daughters and my son needed that support. Family is a huge thing for me.

"It won't disrupt us, it will just make us a little stronger going into the Test series. Our focus is still on the series."

West Indies captain Jason Holder had no qualms over Simmons' brief absence.

"Phil has done what was asked of him and I don't have any issue with it," he said.

Australia on Thursday announced plans to ditch the English Dukes ball in domestic cricket and revert to using only the traditional Kookaburra for the next Sheffield Shield season.

Cricket Australia introduced the Dukes ball in 2016 and they were used in the second half of each Shield season to try to accustom players to conditions in England, where Australian batsmen had often struggled.

Dukes balls tend to have a more pronounced seam, enabling them swing further and for longer when new than the Australian-made Kookaburras.

Cricket Australia's head of operations Peter Roach said reverting to the Kookaburra was the right move at this time.

"The introduction of the Dukes ball has been a worthwhile exercise, particularly in the lead-up to overseas Ashes series where the Dukes is used so well by our English opponents," he said.

"We have been happy with how the ball has performed when used in Australian conditions over the past four seasons.

"We do, however, feel that reverting to one ball for 2020-21 will provide the consistent examination of our players over a full season that (Cricket Australia) and the states are presently seeking," he added.

While England continue to use Dukes, the Kookaburra is used for Tests in many other parts of the world and widely in limited-overs cricket.

Roach said Cricket Australia could consider reintroducing Dukes balls closer to the next Ashes series in England, which is due to take place in 2023.

Former BCCI president N Srinivasan has slammed Shashank Manohar, who stepped down from the post of ICC chairman on Wednesday, for causing damage to Indian cricket while being in charge of the ICC. Apparently, BCCI’s power in the world of cricket has taken a hit since Manohar took charge of the ICC as first independent chairman.

Srinivasan termed Manohar as ‘anti-Indian’ while adding that he has hurt India’s finances in the game and importance in world cricket.

“My personal view is he has done so much damage to Indian cricket that every person involved in Indian cricket will be happy (with his exit). He has hurt India’s finances in the game, has hurt India's chances at the ICC, he has been anti-Indian and has reduced India's importance in world cricket. He is running away now because he knows he will not get any bow from the Indian leadership. He has caused huge damage,” Srinivasan told TOI.

Under Manohar’s tenure, the BCCI and ICC have been involved in a tussle over several financial issues. Srinivasan claimed that Manohar is running away because he had no chance to continue at the charge of the ICC.

“Ever since the new leadership has come into BCCI, Shashank knew he could not afford to represent India and use that as a vehicle for his convenience. He knew he had no chance (to continue) and therefore he has run away”.

ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar has stepped down after two, two-year tenures as the head of the cricket body. The ICC Board met on Wednesday and decided that Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja will take the charge until Manohar’s successor is elected.

The process for the Chairperson election is likely to be approved by the ICC Board within the next week.

Manohar, as per the ICC rules, could have stayed for another two-year-term as a maximum of three terms is allowed. However, he decided not to continue ahead of the all-important ICC meeting. As per reports, England’s Colin Graves is the frontrunner to succeed Manohar but recently, former Cricket West Indies chief Dave Cameron has also joined the race recently.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “On behalf of the ICC Board and staff and the whole cricket family, I would like to thank Shashank for his leadership and everything he has done for the sport as ICC Chairman. We wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”

ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja added: “Everyone on the ICC Board extends their wholehearted thanks to Shashank for the commitment he has shown to our sport. There is no doubt that cricket owes Shashank a debt of gratitude for all he has done for the sport. He has left cricket and the ICC in a better place than he found it.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is highly unlikely to cut ties with IPL title sponsors VIVO if the ‘exit clause’ favours the Chinese mobile phone makers, a senior BCCI official said on Wednesday. On June 19, IPL took to social media platform Twitter to state that there would be a meeting to review the tournament’s various sponsor deals. However, that meeting is yet to take place.

Following the violent clash on June 15 in eastern Ladakh, the central government decided to ban 59 Chinese apps including the controversial TikTok. The BCCI official further said that the board never used the words ‘cancel’ or ‘terminate’ the deals.

"We still don't know about the fate of T20 World Cup, Asia Cup, so how can we just have a meeting? Yes, we need to discuss sponsorship but we never used the word cancel or terminate," a senior BCCI official, who also sits in IPL GC meetings, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

We will only terminate if 'Exit Clause' favours us: BCCI official on Chinese sponsorship in IPL

"We said we will review sponsorship. Review means that we need to check all the modalities of the contract. If the 'Exit Clause' favours VIVO more, why should we terminate a Rs 440 crore per year contract? We will only terminate if 'Exit Clause' favours us," he added.

As per the PTI report, some BCCI officials are of the view that the board should honour the contract, which ends in 2022, unless VIVO backs out. Termination of the contract could mean that the Indian cricket board may have to pay substantial compensation.

However, the likes of PayTM, Dream XI, BYJUs and SWIGGY, who all have Chinese investors, might not have to sweat as they are Indian entities.

De Villiers is regarded as one of the finest players to have taken the cricket field and his camaraderie with Virat Kohli is known to all.

De Villiers picked Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag as the opening batsmen of his all-time IPL XI before naming Kohli at three. He didn’t have a choice but to pick himself at four with a surprise pick in Ben Stokes at number five. Chennai Super Kings stalwart and former Indian skipper MS Dhoni takes up the captain’s armband and the wicket-keeping gloves in de Villiers’ team as the former Proteas skipper opened up on Cricbuzz.

For the all-rounder’s spot, de Villiers went with Ravindra Jadeja before picking Rashid Khan as the spinner who can tonk a few as well. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kagiso Rabada and Jasprit Bumrah formed de Villiers’ pace attack in his all-time IPL XI.

De Villiers went on to shower high praise on his RCB skipper Virat Kohli as he said that despite being a different kind of batsmen, they two form a deadly pair. However, the South African batsman admitted that Kohli is a more reliable option.

“We take on different bowlers. I personally like to attack a little earlier, not to show weakness early on. I am earlier to the trigger. I want the bowlers to feel early on that it will be trouble if I’m allowed to bat for 5 overs,” de Villiers said.

Ben Stokes to lead England in 1st Test against West Indies; Joe Root to be back for Manchester Tests

Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia on Tuesday called for an end to Chinese sponsorships and financial contracts in the Indian Premier League amid the tensions between two countries following the violent clash in eastern Ladakh earlier in June.

Calls for boycotting Chinese products have echoed all around the country after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the Galwan Valley clash on June 15. Amid the escalating tensions, the BCCI called a meeting of the IPL Governing Council to review Chinese sponsorship in the cash-rich tournament. And on Monday, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps including trending TikTok, ShareIt, WeChat and many others.

"We should do it (sever ties with Chinese sponsors in IPL) for the sake of the nation. Country comes first, money is secondary. And it is the Indian Premier League, not the Chinese Premier League. "Yes it would be difficult to find sponsors initially but I am sure there are enough Indian sponsors who can replace them. We must have all the respect for the nation and our government and most importantly for the soldiers who risk their lives for us," said the known Indian businessman.

The face-off between India and China was the biggest confrontation between the two countries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers whereas China lost over 300 soldiers.

Chinese mobile maker Vivo is the title sponsor of IPL and pays Rs 440 crore to the BCCI for the five-year-deal ending in 2022. The likes of Paytm, Swiggy, Dream11 – all have Chinese investments and are involved in the IPL.

Wadia has cleared his part out and other franchises, including Chennai Super Kings, said they will follow government orders.

"It will be tough to replace them initially but if it has to be done for the sake of the nation, we should do it," a CSK source told PTI.
Another team owner said: "Let the government decide first, whatever they decide, we will follow".

Wadia is also of the view that BCCI needs to find an Indian sponsor for the upcoming season while adding it is not right to wait government’s directives.

Indian companies need to step up: Ness Wadia

"If I was the BCCI president, I would say find me an Indian sponsor for the upcoming season.

"Indian companies need to step up and see the same benefits and opportunities that Chinese companies have seen in the IPL, which is the best T20 league in the world."

Asked about the Chinese sponsorship in IPL teams, Wadia said: "The teams too should be given time to replace their Chinese sponsors. As I said, there are enough Indian companies which can replace them."

Wadia also welcomed the Indian government's decision to ban Chinese apps citing national security.

"If India plays its card right, it can really be the superpower it desires to be," he observed.

"Personally I don't like to buy Chinese products because they are sub-standard. The focus has to be on making Indian and buying Indian. China produces such large volumes and suffocates the world, it has to stop. We should put all our efforts on making India a manufacturing hub.

"I travel around the country a lot. If we don't stop the influx of cheap Chinese goods and are not firm in what we are doing, Indian manufacturing will die," cautioned Wadia.

Asked about the Chinese sponsorship in IPL teams, Wadia said: "The teams too should be given time to replace their Chinese sponsors. As I said, there are enough Indian companies which can replace them." Wadia also welcomed the Indian government's decision to ban Chinese apps citing national security.

Australian-born former Worcestershire all-rounder, Alex Hepburn, who was jailed for raping a sleeping woman in his teammate’s bedroom has lost his Court of Appeal bid to have the judgment overturned. The 24-year-old, Hepburn was jailed for five years in April 2019 for the attack, which took place in Worcester in 2017 during the first night of a sexual competition he set up on a WhatsApp group.

Earlier, a jury had found Hepburn guilty of oral rape at a retrial but cleared him of a further count of rape relating to the same victim.
Hepburn was said by the prosecution to have been “fired up” by the competition to sleep with most women before the 24-year-old carried out the rape at his flat in Worcester on April 1, 2017. The four-day trial heard that the woman wrongly thought she was having sex with Hepburn’s then county team-mate Joe Clarke, after meeting him a club.

The Australian-born cricketer had challenged the sentence at the Court of Appeal earlier in June. However, in a judgement on Tuesday, three senior judges, including the Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett, dismissed the appeal while stating: “The conviction is not unsafe.”

Mr Emanuel told the judges: “I accept it would be different if there was talk of sex against will, or trickery to gain a point, or taking a chance, but there’s nothing like that in the messages.

“They are too far removed as to be able to be to do with the facts of the alleged offence.”

Reacting to the WhatsApp chat group created by Hepburn’s help, the judge said: “You probably thought it was laddish behaviour at the time. In truth, it was foul sexism.”

Australia and Zimbabwe have agreed to postpone three one-day internationals in August because of the difficulty of putting on the series while the new coronavirus pandemic continues, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe were due to play the first match at a venue yet to be determined in the far north of Australia on Aug. 9 with a further clash three days later and a final fixture in Townsville on Aug. 15.

CA said in a statement that the decision was mutually agreed and that they remained committed to playing the series on “alternative dates”.

“While we are disappointed to postpone the series, CA and (Zimbabwe Cricket) agree that in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers as well as our fans, this is the most practical and sensible decision,” said CA’s Nick Hockley.

Australia last played an international match on March 13, when they beat New Zealand behind closed doors at the Sydney Cricket Ground just before the novel coronavirus outbreak forced the shutdown of all sport.

England’s director of cricket Ashley Giles said last week that he was “quietly confident” Australia would agree to play a one-day series in Britain in September.

West Indies coach Phil Simmons is in short-term self-isolation after being allowed to attend the funeral of his father-in-law and has since twice tested negative for coronavirus, team chiefs said Sunday.

Prior to the start of their three-Test tour of England, Simmons had already sought permission to leave the team's bio-secure bubble at Old Trafford in Manchester.

"The entire process of his exit and re-entry to the bio-secure location was approved and managed by the medical teams of Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)," said a statement.

Simmons travelled to the small private family cremation and returned on Friday.

"Following his return, Simmons has been in self-isolation away from other members of the squad, exactly as had always been planned.

Windies coach Simmons leaves bubble for funeral, tests negative twice for virus

The English county cricket season will start on August 1, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Monday.

The exact type of cricket has still to be decided, although the ECB said this was "due to be agreed" by the 18 first-class counties in early July.

Officials had previously announced that the inaugural edition of the new-format Hundred franchise competition had been scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The first Test between England and the West Indies behind closed doors at a bio-secure Southampton, starting on July 8, is set to be the first major international cricket match since lockdown.

The opening round of the first-class County Championship was originally scheduled to begin on April 12.

But in the months since the season was delayed by the virus the ECB have made it clear that Twenty20 Blast fixtures are their most lucrative domestic format, with international fixtures their biggest cash draw.

Health and safety remains the major concern for the ECB, which has approved the return to training of first-class counties on or before July 1.

"It is a significant step for our game that we are able to approve the start of the men's domestic season for August 1 and one which will be welcomed by everyone connected with county cricket," said ECB chief executive Tom Harrison.

Harrison, who previously warned a season without any fixtures at all could cost the ECB £252 million ($309 million)," also welcomed the input of the counties and the Professional Cricketers' Association in preparing for a "domestic season unlike any the game has faced before".

Harrison stressed British government health guidance "will continue to shape our planning and preparation".

Two-day friendly matches between Surrey and Middlesex and Yorkshire and Lancashire in July had already been announced before Monday's statement by the ECB.

Former Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief Dave Cameron has entered the race to succeed India’s Shashank Manohar as the next ICC chairman. The United States Cricket Hall of Fame recently recommended Cameron to the top post of the ICC.

"I believe we need to find a sustainable financial model where teams can earn through merit," Cameron, who served as CWI president from 2013 to 2019, was quoted as saying by 'Jamaica Gleaner'.

"The big three India, Australia and England have all the events, the audience and the biggest economy, but the smaller nations have to always be coming back to the ICC for financial support, so what we want to happen is not equal share of revenues, but equitable share," said Cameron.

The former CWI boss will need the backing of another two member boards to stay in the race but it is not clear whether he will receive the backing of CWI chief Ricky Skerritt, who replaced him for the chair while having a public altercation with him.

Despite staying away from the field since March, Australian limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch is thinking and planning about winning the 2023 ICC World Cup scheduled to be played in India. While the T20 World Cup in Australia later in the year looks unlikely to go ahead due to COVID-19 pandemic, India has the hosting rights for the 2021 edition.

Finch said he is already looking forward to the 2021 and 2023 World Cup in India while adding he is already preparing for how the Aussies can win the tournaments.

“I’m a cricket nuffy so you are always thinking about it, especially being captain and with what’s coming up with the T20 World Cup, whenever that might be, and there’s a couple of them and looking forward to the 2023 50-over World Cup in India,” Finch told SEN Radio. “We are just in the processing of nutting out how we go about winning that, what we’ll need to do down the track to be successful in those three tournaments.”

On the 2023 World Cup, Finch said that they are looking for a detailed plan on how to win the tournament: “In the 50-over space, it’s about working back from that 2023 World Cup and really getting a detailed plan of how we think we’ll have to win it, what’s the structure of the side we’ll need in India. Is it going to be two spinners, is it going to be an extra all-rounder and kind of work back from there.”

Australia, who have a record five world titles under their belt, will look forward to making a stamp after losing to England in the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2019. Finch also said that if there is someone who can make a big impact, then he would need to be given that experience to do well in crunch matches.

“If there’s someone new we identify who could perhaps have a big impact... make sure they have enough experience so in a high-pressure semi-final you aren’t going in hoping they’ll do well, you know they have the form and enough experience behind them to make sure they are comfortable with international level,” he said.

“It’s not rocket science, it’s going through data, a bit of gut instinct of what you feel will be the trends of one-day cricket. Will it be 400, or will it be that 320-mark with some wearing pitches in India and a couple of spinners in your side?”

Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy, who has been vocal against racism in the world of cricket, has said that the bouncer rule was amended in the rule books to limit the success of a “black team” citing West Indies’ success under Clive Llyod and the phenomenal pace attack which used to terrorise batsmen with their pace and bounce.

In 1991, the ICC decided to tweak the rules which allowed bowlers to bowl just one bouncer per over before giving permission for two bouncers in 1994. Again in 2001, the rule was changed back to one bouncer per over before going back to the two bouncers per over 11 years after.

Remembering the 1983 World Cup triumph, former India all-rounder Kapil Dev on Thursday said that the tournament win made a big difference in the country as parents started inculcating values of sport in the minds of their children. India had defeated West Indies in the finals of the 1983 World Cup to win their first 50-over World Cup.

The Kapil Dev-led side was not given a chance by many people prior to the tournament, but in the end, the side defied all odds.

"I can say we were proud about our team, we made ourselves proud by winning the tournament, the World Cup win is a wonderful thing, because of that the entire nation celebrated," Dev told ANI.

"I think any big achievement affects the next generation, the 1983 win made a big difference, in our country, parents also started inculcating the value of sports, so it was a big thing. We have been producing doctors and engineers in large numbers as parents support that profession," he added.

When asked about the pressure Virat Kohli is put under for not winning the World Cup title yet, Dev replied: "There is no pressure on the current Indian team, in my opinion, they are doing well, it`s not like that you need to win a World Cup to be called a good team."

"Virat Kohli is doing well, Sourav Ganguly did well, how can we forget Sunil Gavaskar? He was a great captain too. Lifting the cup is not everything, how you shape up the team matters," he added.

In the finals between India and West Indies, the latter won the toss and opted to bowl first.

The Kapil Dev-led side managed to score just 183 runs as Andy Roberts took three wickets while Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, and Larry Gomes picked up two wickets each.

Defending 183, India did a good job of keeping a check on the Windies run flow, reducing the side to 57/3.

Soon after, the team from the Caribbean was reduced to 76/6 and India was the favourites from there on to win the title. Mohinder Amarnath took the final wicket of Michael Holding to give India their first-ever World Cup title win.I

n the finals, West Indies was bowled out for 140, and as a result, India won the match by 43 runs. Kapil Dev lifting the trophy at the balcony of Lord`s Cricket Ground still remains an image to savour for all the Indian fans.

In the finals, Mohinder Amarnath was chosen as the Man of the Match as he scored 26 runs with the bat and also picked up three wickets with the ball.
