After the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mens-t20-world-cup-2020-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-pandemic-icc-314722">official postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020</a>, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a> Governing Council is set to meet in a week or 10 days’ time to chalk out the plan for the next course of action with the eye firmly locked at the UAE as hosts this year.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mens-t20-world-cup-2020-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-pandemic-icc-314722">The decision by ICC to postpone the T20 World Cup</a> has cleared a window for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL 2020</a> between September and early November. The showpiece event, scheduled to be held in Australia in October-November was postponed on Monday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The IPL GC will meet within a week or 10 days and all decisions (including final schedule) will be taken there. As of now, the plan is to have a full-fledged IPL comprising 60 games and most likely in the UAE," Patel told PTI.
Patel further said that the operational side of the tournament is going to be a challenge.

"Just the operational side of it. Whether you do it here or outside, it doesn't matter (with no crowds)."

While the franchises had already been working on their plans for the IPL even before the ICC announcement, the majority of players don’t have access to grounds amid the pandemic and will need at least three to four weeks to reach optimum match fitness.

Foreign players will fly in directly to the UAE from their respective countries.

"Our players will need at least three to four weeks of training, if not more. We will finalise all our plans once the BCCI announces the dates. It looks like the IPL will be in the UAE and we are ready for that," a team owner told PTI.

Whereas with the Test series against Australia approaching, specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari, who are not part of the IPL, are likely to train for the much-talked-about series at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad.

<h2>More moot points and questions ahead of the IPL GC meeting:</h2>

1) More double headers expected (original schedule had only five double headers).

2) BCCI will need to provide a Standard Operating Procedure to IPL teams even though they will have their own SOPs in place.

3) Will the BCCI compensate teams for not being able to generate gate money this year?

4) Will there be virtual commentary from Star Sports? It was seen in the recent 3TC event in South Africa with the likes of Aakash Chopra, Deep Dasgupta and Irfan Pathan commentating from home.

AB de Villiers’ blistering knock helped his team Eagles win the 3TC Solidarity Cup gold medal at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Saturday. De Villiers’ quickfire knock only cemented his place as one of the most devastating batters of all time with his team ending the match at the top of the podium.

Reeza &nbsp;Hendricks won the toss as Kingfishers elected to bat first. The side started brightly after their captain and Janneman Malan put a quick 30-run partnership in the first three overs. Faf du Plessis played the second fiddle to Malan as Kingfishers ended their first innings at 56/2 in 6 overs.

India’s legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid revealed that it was maestro Kapil Dev’s advice that helped him to explore options following his retirement before he decided to pick up the coaching job of India A and Under-19 sides.

Dravid is of the view that he was “a little fortunate” given that he was already in a captain-cum-coach role for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Rajasthan Royals.&nbsp;

“After I finished (playing), there were quite a few options and I was not sure what to do. It was Kapil Dev who gave me this advice actually when I was coming to the end of my career,” Dravid told India women’s team coach WV Raman on his Youtube channel ‘Inside Out’.

“I bumped into him somewhere and he said ‘Rahul, don’t commit to doing anything straightaway, go out and spend a few years just exploring and doing different things and see what you really like’. I thought it was good advice.” The former captain said initially he liked doing commentary, but later found “a little disconnect” from the game.

“...the thing that gave me the most satisfaction was really being involved in the game and being connected with the boys. I really liked the coaching side of things and I got sort of involved in that when the opportunity came up to do some coaching with India A and Under-19,” Dravid said.

“I thought it was a good place to start and took it up and I’ve really enjoyed it since. I just feel a lot more satisfying to be involved in the coaching side of things,” said the legendary batsman, who piled up 13288 runs from 164 Tests between 1996 and 2012.

“Especially the developmental side of coaching, whether India A, Under-19 or the NCA. It’s really given me the opportunity to work with a lot of the players without having to worry about the immediate results which I think is a really nice space for me to work in.” He backed the BCCI’s decision to restrict U-19 players to one World Cup only.

“Instead of just 15-20 players, we were able to give 45 to 50 players exposure to the facilities at NCA, good coaches, good physios, good trainers, so it broadens the pool,” said Dravid, who is Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

The Wall further said that India A players now feel secure as everyone gets a chance to play rather than warming the bench of a longer period. Dravid went on to reveal that he doubted himself as an ODI cricketer when he was dropped from the senior side in 1998 due to his strike-rate.&nbsp;

“There have been phases in my international career (when I felt insecure). I was dropped from the ODI team in 1998. I had to fight my way back in, was away from the Indian team for a year,” he said.

“There were certain insecurities than about whether I’m a good enough one-day player or not because I always wanted to be a Test player, was coached to be a Test player, hit the ball on the ground, don’t hit the ball in the air, coaching like that. You sort of worry whether you had the skills to be able to do it (in an ODI).”

Dravid made a sensational comeback to the Indian ODI side before the 1999 World Cup in England and ended up being the highest scorer (461) in the tournament.&nbsp;

Talking about choosing cricket over academics, he said, “Growing up as a young cricketer in India is not easy. In the time that I grew up there was only Ranji Trophy and revenue was so poor. I had to forgo a CA or MBA to pursue cricket so there was insecurity.”

Cricket will be back in South Africa with CSA’s brand-new format 3TC (three-team cricket). The biggest names in South African cricket circuit will take to the field for an exhibition match in Centurion on July 18 with one interesting catch – three teams will lock horns in one 36-over match in what will be a never-before-seen format in the gentlemen’s game.

The event has been named as ‘Solidarity Cup’ and will be similar to WWE’s triple-threat match.&nbsp;AB de Villiers, Kagiso Rabada and Quinton de Kock have been named as the captains of the three participating teams with a unique set of rules set to enthral the cricket lovers. &nbsp;

Cricket South Africa identified the need to “use their voice” to help people and institutions. 3TeamCricket will be raising money for The Hardship Fund using its platform of passionate cricket supporters.

"It’s a great idea and credit must go to Cricket South Africa and Rain for working to develop this new and innovative style of cricket," said AB de Villiers during the announcement of Solidarity Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has locked on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to host the much-talked-about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> given that the T20 World Cup, scheduled in October-November, gets postponed. <o:p></o:p>

The latest development comes after the BCCI Apex Council meeting which was held via teleconference on Monday. While the information has not yet been confirmed by the BCCI, reports say that the BCCI has zeroed in the UAE for the IPL 2020. However, no concrete decision was taken in the meeting and everything will be discussed again when the BCCI officials meet next time.

Notably, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL 2020</a> was atop the 11-point agenda for the meeting.<o:p></o:p>

UAE has already hosted the initial leg of IPL 2014 and has been zeroed in as the frontrunner given that the UAE is also a travel hub while being well connection. The medical facilities and past experience of hosting the IPL there may have gone in favour of the IPL.

<h2 class="MsoNormal">Ahmedabad for training camp?</h2>

Another major development from the meeting is that the BCCI is now looking at a truncated version of IPL 2020 between September and early November. But it all depends on the postponement of the T20 World Cup.<o:p></o:p>

The BCCI has always maintained that it will only organise a trainng camp for the contracted players when they deem it safe. Dharamsala and Ahmedabad were discussed as two potential venues where a bio-bubble can be created. However, Dharamsala was struck out due to lack of accommodation, making Ahmedabad the frontrunner.

"All lives don't matter until black lives matter," former South Africa captain and star batsman Faf du Plessis said on Friday, lending support to the fight against racism that has gripped the world with renewed vigour after African-American George Floyd's death.

Offering his views on the 'Black Lives Matter' movement, which found support in the ongoing England-West Indies Test series where players from both sides took a knee in the opening match, du Plessis said time has come to fight racism head on.

"In the last couple of months I have realised that we must choose our battles. We are surrounded by many injustices in our country that require urgent attention and action to fix them," the 36-year-old du Plessis posted on instagram.

Floyd became a symbol of the anti-racism movement after he was killed at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis, triggering widespread protests across the US and the world.

"So I've remained silent, with the intent to listen, but not respond. Slowing down my point of view, but quicker to hear the pain of someone else. I surrender my opinions and take the knee as an intercessor.

"I acknowledge that South Africa is still hugely divided by racism and it is my personal responsibility to do my best to emphasize, hear the stories, learn and then be part of the solution with my thoughts, words and actions," du Plessis added.

This is in stark contrast to his past stance of rejecting talk of racism. He had said that "we don't see colour" when asked about Temba Bavuma's axing earlier this year.

"I have gotten it wrong before. Good intentions were failed by a lack of perspective when I said on a platform that - I don't see colour. In my ignorance I silenced the struggles of others by placing my own view on it," du Plessis said.

"A race problem is a human race problem, if one part of the body hurts ,we all stop, we empathize, we get perspective, we learn and then we tend to the hurting part of the body."

His teammate and pacer Lungi Ngidi has stated that the team will discuss a way to support the BLM movement when it has a chance at a group discussion. The players have restarted training after a prolonged break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Du Plessis said the BLM movement has his full support.

"So I am saying that all lives don't matter UNTIL black lives matter. I'm speaking up now, because if I wait to be perfect, I never will. I want to leave a legacy of empathy," he said.

"The work needs to continue for the change to come and whether we agree or disagree, conversation is the vehicle for change," he added.

As speculations continue to grow that the currently suspended <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier league (IPL) 2020</a> could be held in the UAE due to rising caseload of COVID-19 in India, Dubai Sports City’s Head of Cricket and Events Salman Hanif has said that they are keeping the stadiums and facilities ready in case the BCCI takes the call to move the cash-rich tournament abroad.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a> is looking at the September-early November window and with the T20 World Cup 2020 likely to be postponed, the BCCI might look to shift the 13th edition of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IP</a>L to the UAE.

Speaking to ‘Gulf News’ Hanif said that the Dubai Sports City, which included the Dubai International Stadium and the ICC Academy, is ready a potential venue for the glitzy T20 league.&nbsp;

“The stadium has nine wickets on the top in case a large number of matches have to be accommodated within a smaller time-frame. We will not be scheduling any matches there to keep the wickets fresh,” said Hanif.

While case count in India has crossed the 10 lakh-mark, including over 25,000 deaths, the UAE has recorded more than 50,000 cases with over 300 deaths.&nbsp;

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has already said that the board is keen to conduct the IPL even if has to be moved abroad. And if the IPL manages to book the September-November window for itself, the eight franchises would want their players to land in the UAE a bit early in a bid to earn time for practice.&nbsp;

“The practice facilities are never going to be a problem as we have hosted multi-team events before. In the ICC complex alone, there are 38 wickets – spread over the two Oval grounds, the simulated turf wickets as well as the state-of-the-art indoor facilities in case they want to beat the heat,” Hanif said.

England’s Jofra Archer has been dropped from the second Test against the West Indies starting today (Thursday 16 July) at Emirates Old Trafford following a breach of the team’s bio-secure protocols, the ECB said.&nbsp;

Archer will now start a five-day isolation period while undergoing two COVID-19 tests in this period, which have to test negative before his self-isolation phase is lifted.

Visiting team – the West Indies – have been made aware of the incident and are satisfied with the measures that have been imposed.

“I am extremely sorry for what I have done,” said Archer upon his exclusion from the second Test, which is a do-or-die for England.

Jofra acknowledged the fact that his mistake has put himself and the entire team and management in danger while accepting the consequences of his action. The Barbadian-born English speedster apologized to everyone in the bio-secure bubble.

“I have put, not only myself, but the whole team and management in danger. I fully accept the consequences of my actions, and I want to sincerely apologise to everyone in the bio-secure bubble.

Here are the excerpts:&nbsp;

Subhayan Chakraborty: Hello Chemar, thanks for joining. A big win in the first Test and the West Indies are heading into the second Test with a 1-0 lead. How is the feeling in the camp?

Chemar Holder:&nbsp;Thanks for having me. It is a very good feeling. We have really worked hard since we came here in the UK and even before that and now we are eagerly looking forward to the other two Test matches.&nbsp;

SC: Chemar, the performance by the West Indies pacers, especially by Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder, really stood out. So as a youngster, how was it like to witness the experienced guys go about their business from the stands?

Chemar Holder: Well, watching them in person is really mind-blowing and exciting I would say. I have seen the struggles and hard work these guys go through and put in. When they come off in the break, seeing the efforts they are putting and knowing every time they bowl they will give everything for the team. So it is good to see and learn from them.

SC: A lot of praise coming towards Jason Holder as well. He is the no. one all-rounder and now the number two bowler in Test cricket and has led the team phenomenally well. So how is to have a leader like Jason around?
Chemar Holder: It is very good to have a person like Jason in the team. I know Jason personally and he is a real hard worker. He is always looking to improve when we play the game of cricket. It is good to have him around. Anything I want to know, he will tell me. We sit down together, we have discussions and he helps me with everything I need.&nbsp;

SC: Chemar, I will now come to your career so far. You have really impressed in the domestic circuit. But there are lot of youngsters who lose their way in trying to attempt too many things at a young age in today’s T20 world. How do you go about your bowling, what is your main focus?

Chemar Holder: I always try and train to the best of my ability. I make sure my rhythm is right, my wrist position and work on where to improve at the nets and move on like that in each and every training session. Also, I try to be patience whenever it comes to the longer format. I try not to get too excited or try too many tricks which could hamper the flow of my bowling.&nbsp;

SC: I believe you have a family background in cricket. Can you tell us something more about it? And what would be the feeling for your family if you go onto make your Test debut for the West Indies in this series?

Chemar Holder: I call it my management team, which is my family. You know, my uncles backed me to play cricket when I was 13 and also my mum, dad and my entire family, they are backing me right now and I know they are happy. When I got the call for this tour and when I told them, they were really happy. We sat and discussed about few things related to the tour. And if I get a chance to make my debut, I know all of them would be watching and smiling.&nbsp;

SC: Outside your family, who has been your idol while growing up? West Indies cricket has produced so many legendary fast bowlers, who was your pick when you were a kid?

Chemar Holder: Sir Curtly Ambrose!&nbsp;

SC: Is your nickname Ambi derived from there...&nbsp;

Chemar Holder: Few of the guys call me Ambi due to my love for Sir Curtly Ambrose and also due to my hairstyle and bowling action.

SC: You mentioned your bowling action...There have been comparisons between you and Jofra Archer. How do you take comparison at such a young age?

Chemar Holder: No not at all, I don’t think about that. Everybody is different. I am focusing on what I have to do and I am sure he is doing what he has to do. So no comparisons at all.&nbsp;

SC: Chemar, a lot of talks surrounding the saliva ban as well. You guys have been practicing without the saliva for around a month now. How has been the experience? Is there any difference?

Chemar Holder: Yes, there is a big difference!&nbsp;You know, there would be some spots in the ball which you need to polish. But we cannot put the saliva to keep the ball nice and shiny on one side. But there have been no such problems so far and we have been trying to polish it by rubbing it and using the sweat, given we continue to get it as England get sometimes cold. But bowling without using saliva has been going very good so far.&nbsp;

SC: So Chemar, you are now sharing the dressing room with the experienced players like Shannon Gabriel, Kemar Roach or for that matter Jason Holder. So have you been picking their brains?

Chemar Holder: I have had some one on one sessions with them. I ask a few questions and they even come to me and we talk about cricket or anything else. So it is good to have experienced guys around me who can help me grow as a cricketer.

SC: What would be your message to the fans, who have been unable to come to the stadium and are watching from their home?

Chemar Holder: I would just ask him to keep watching, you know. &nbsp;We know that they are watching from all over the world and tuning into their TVs even though they are not present here. Also, stay safe, remain focus on following the protocols and soon you all be able to come to the stadiums and watch live cricket.&nbsp;

Can Pakistan defeat England in the Test series? Ramiz Raja gives his take

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> will be the topmost agenda of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council, which is set to meet virtually on Friday. The rising cases of COVID-19 has left the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a> hanging in balance but the BCCI is optimistic of conducting the tournament, either in India or abroad.

As per a report in PTI, the 11-point agenda will surround the domestic cricket season, which is likely to see a truncated version considering the rising COVID-19 caseload in the country. Another major point that will be discussed is the rejigging of the Future Tours and Programme (FTP) of the men’s cricket team with three series (against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and England) already cancelled. &nbsp;

While the BCCI has zeroed in on a September to early November window for IPL, the Council will discuss the roadmap for the tournament, which currently stands indefinitely postponed amid the uncertainty surrounding the dreaded virus.&nbsp;

"Obviously, all options need to be explored. First option is India but you don't how the situation will be. Obviously, there is UAE and Sri Lanka but taking out the IPL will increase the overheads. I think the president also recently said that," a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"I don't think we are still in a position to fix venues in a situation which is so fluid. But the plans and the tentative window needs to be ready so that once ICC makes a formal announcement of T20 World Cup (scheduled for October-November) cancellation next week, we can proceed," the official said.

Tax exemption for ICC events also in agenda. With ICC Board Meeting scheduled next Monday, the issue of getting tax exemption certificate from the government in order to host the 2021 T20 World Cup is also high on agenda.

The tax exemption for the ICC events has been a bone of contention and BCCI has been given time till December to get the necessary clearances from the central government. As far as India's FTP is concerned, the agenda states that the September white-ball series versus England could be rescheduled in February following the Test series.In case BCCI wants to squeeze in the white ball games, it could well mean that the five-Test series would be curtailed to include six white ball games (3 ODIs and 3 T20Is).

The postponed white ball tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe also needs to be rescheduled.

One of the biggest headache for BCCI is country's domestic structure which includes, senior men, U-23 men, junior boys (U-19 and U-16), senior women, U-23 women and U-19 girls, constituting thousands of matches across formats.&nbsp;

"Obviously, the Ranji Trophy schedule needs to be tweaked. We need to discuss whether we can have Vijay Hazare, Duleep Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali in one go."May be we have to let go one of the tournaments as considerable time would be lost. We have to fit in the junior domestic events," said the official.

Another major issue will be apparel sponsorship as the Nike deal has come to an end. It is expected that BCCI will follow the process of inviting tenders from potential bidders.

Some of the other issues include discussions on Rahul Johri's replacement for CEO's post, grants and subsidies to North Eastern states, NCA operations, recruitment of BCCI staff and administrative mess in Bihar Cricket Association.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 will be the topmost agenda of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council, which is set to meet virtually on Friday. The rising cases of COVID-19 has left the IPL hanging in balance but the BCCI is optimistic of conducting the tournament, either in India or abroad. As per a report in PTI, the 11-point agenda will surround the domestic cricket season, which is likely to see a truncated version considering the rising COVID-19 caseload in the country. Another major point that will be discussed is the rejigging of the Future Tours and Programme (FTP) of the men’s cricket team with three series (against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and England) already cancelled. While the BCCI has zeroed in on a September to early November window for IPL, the Council will discuss the roadmap for the tournament, which currently stands indefinitely postponed amid the uncertainty surrounding the dreaded virus. BCCI Apex Council meeting on Friday: IPL 2020, revamped FTP, domestic calendar on 11-point agenda

Top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne reckons Australia now has a "stable" batting lineup and as a result, the upcoming Test series against India would be a great spectacle for everyone involved.The last time India toured Australia during the 2018-19 season, the Virat Kohli-led side registered their first Test series win on the Aussie soil.

However, the powerhouse Australian duo -- David Warner and Steve Smith -- were missing in action because of a year-long ban for the ball-tampering scandal. Australia and India are slated to take on each other in a four-match Test series this year, beginning from December 4 in Brisbane.

In a telephonic interview with ANI, the 26-year-old from Queensland opened up about the upcoming India-Australia series, the new ICC guidelines, and his bond with teammate Steve Smith.Labuschagne said that India probably has one of the "best bowling attacks in the world" at the moment, however, with the likes of Smith and Warner back in the team, Australia would be in a much more stable position.

"I cannot wait for the series against India. The series will be between the number one and number two ranked sides in the World Test Championship. Having Steve Smith and David Warner is a massive win for us, one batsman averages in the 60s while the second one averages in the high forties. That will add massive balance to our side," the right-handed-batsman spoke to ANI in a telephonic interview.

"I also think that we are playing better cricket now, our batting lineup is more stable now, guys understand their role, it would be a great challenge facing India`s bowling attack. India has one of the best bowling attacks in the world, if not the best," added the batsman.

When asked who would be the most challenging Indian bowler to bat against, Labuschagne replied, "Jasprit Bumrah with the extra pace adds a bit of value to the Indian attack, he can swing the ball both ways, he is right up there in the rankings. It would be exciting to see two great pace attacks take on each other. We would be required to be at our best to defeat India."The second Test of the series, scheduled for later this year, at Adelaide would be a day-night Test.

When quizzed about whether Australia would have an advantage over their guests, Labuschagne believes otherwise. "I don`t think Australia would have a clear advantage in the day-night Test, we have played more pink-ball Tests. The way the game is right now, people are used to adapting so I really don`t think we would have an outright advantage," he said.

The 26-year-old made his Test debut in 2018, but he couldn`t register his presence right away. However, he made a comeback in the national squad in the second Ashes Test at Lord`s in 2019. Interestingly, he was called in as a concussion substitute for Smith.

"Steve and I are great mates and, I have learnt a lot from him. We talk quite a bit about batting. Just by watching him play and go about his work, I have managed to pick up a few things," Labuschagne added.

The right-handed batsman registered 1,104 runs at an impressive average of 64.94 in 2019. The stellar run continued to the succeeding year, 2020, when he played an innings of 215, his highest Test score, against New Zealand in Sydney. However, that was only Test match the Aussie could play as the world sports, along with cricket, had come to a halt due to the global pandemic.

The young batsman has made the world sit up and notice his talent in Tests and One Day Internationals, although, he longs to explore the shortest format of the game. Due to the pandemic, Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most popular T20 cricket leagues, has also been postponed indefinitely due to the contagious virus.

"IPL is the best T20 competition in the world, and if there is an opportunity to play in the IPL, I would definitely want to go over there and challenge myself against the best players in the world," the Aussie said.

However, his sole focus is to play for his country as and when needed. He is currently ranked at the number three position in the ICC Test batsmen rankings, only behind Steve Smith and Virat Kohli.The country has somewhat managed to curb the coronavirus, and Labuschagne said that players in Queensland have also returned to full-fledged training with their state sides.

"Lockdown has been good. It has been a good opportunity to work on different parts of your game. It has also been a good opportunity to work on the fitness aspect as well. We have fully resumed our training in Queensland. I did not take much of a break as I really enjoy batting, I was playing a bit of cricket in the backyard so there is not much rustiness," he added.

Australia had last played an international match in March against New Zealand, however, after the first ODI, the remaining two matches were postponed due to the pandemic.But many parts of the world are recovering from the havoc created by the virus, and hence several world sports are returning back on the field.

In the first cricketing encounter since the pandemic arrived, West Indies and England on July 8 kicked off the Test series in Southampton. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has made some modifications in the sport, regarding the use of saliva in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the same, Labuschagne said, "I really enjoyed watching the first Test between England and West Indies. I am a big fan of watching cricket, it was a great test between bat and ball, it seemed as if the ball did not swing as much over there, bowlers were not able to shine the ball with saliva so I am unsure whether that had an effect of it."The Aussie admits that it would be "tough" to maintain the ball with no saliva policy in different conditions.

"I definitely think not using saliva will have an effect, it is tough to maintain the ball with just sweat in tougher conditions. There needs to be a fair contest between bat and ball, there has to be something which can help shine the ball to maintain an even contest between bat and ball, I am not saying use illegal substance but you can try out something which can help the ball stay in even condition," he added.

Earlier today, Cricket Australia announced a 26-member probable list if the series against England goes ahead. Both CA and ECB are currently working on a situation to go ahead with the limited-overs series in September this year.

Stoinis, Khawaja return as Australia announce 26-man squad for England series

England will hope the return of captain Joe Root proves inspirational in the second Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford starting Thursday.

Star batsman Root missed England's four-wicket defeat at Southampton in international cricket's return from lockdown last week after attending the birth of his second child.

He has now rejoined the squad, with the West Indies needing just one win from the two remaining Tests at Old Trafford to clinch a first series win in England for 32 years.

Although all three fixtures are being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus outbreak, Root, returning to lead England after all-rounder Ben Stokes took temporary charge, will be in a familiar position.

England have now lost the opening match of a series for the eighth time in 10 campaigns.

Most recently in South Africa they recovered from a heavy defeat in the first Test to win that series 3-1.

"It's quite frustrating," said Root of England's slow starts on Wednesday.

"The pleasing thing is there's been times when that's been the case and we've still come out and won the series. That's the challenge now."

Joe Denly has made way for Root after he was twice out cheaply at Southampton to leave him with a modest average of 29.53 from 15 Tests.

"Joe is someone who has done a fantastic job for us over a period of time and he'll be as frustrated as anyone that he's not been able to covert those opportunities," added Root.

Meanwhile, England are set to recall Stuart Broad after he missed a first home Test in eight years when left out at Southampton -- a move that prompted the veteran seamer to describe himself as "gutted and angry".

Broad is second only to James Anderson in England's all-time list of Test wicket-takers.

But he won't be alongside his longtime new-ball colleague, with Anderson rested along with Durham fast bowler Mark Wood, who also played the opening Test.

Chris Woakes could come into the side in Wood's absence.

England have added left-armer Sam Curran and the uncapped Ollie Robinson to a pace attack still featuring Jofra Archer as they make good on a promise to rotate their quicks amid a gruelling schedule of six Tests in seven weeks, including three against Pakistan.

<h2>- 'Think outside the box' -</h2>

"With Stuart and Jimmy, trying to maximise their careers is really important to make sure they are playing for as long as possible," said Root.

"If that has to be slightly different to how it has been over the last few years then we might have to think outside the box and not play them in every game or not play them together all the time."

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has been retained despite dropping Jermaine Blackwood early in the West Indies batsman's match-clinching innings of 95 at Southampton and averaging just 23.22 in Tests since the start of 2019.

But Root, encouraged by Buttler's first-innings 35, said his fellow World Cup-winner was close to cracking Test cricket.

"It's just a matter of time before we see some of those special innings we've seen in white-ball cricket," he insisted.

West Indies are now on the brink of their first away Test series win against major opposition since 1994/95.

But captain Jason Holder, the world's top-ranked Test all-rounder, said there was no danger of his side getting carried away.

"Winning the first Test match is just one piece of the puzzle," explained Holder, who took a Test-best 6-42 last week.&nbsp;

"We've got two other games to play and we don't get ahead of ourselves."

West Indies are now on the brink of their first away Test series win against major opposition since 1994/95. But captain Jason Holder, the world's top-ranked Test all-rounder, said there was no danger of his side getting carried away. "Winning the first Test match is just one piece of the puzzle," explained Holder, who took a Test-best 6-42 last week. "We've got two other games to play and we don't get ahead of ourselves."

ENG vs WI 2nd Test: England captain Root returns as West Indies eye series win

Manchester United’s Champions League qualification hopes suffered a blow after an equaliser deep in stoppage time from Michael Obafemi earned Southampton a 2-2 draw in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> at Old Trafford on Monday.

United, unbeaten in 18 games in all competitions, were poised to move up to third after Anthony Martial’s 23rd minute strike had put them 2-1 ahead. They had fallen behind to an early Stuart Armstrong goal before Marcus Rashford equalised.

But on the day that second-placed Manchester City’s two-year ban from European football was overturned on appeal, meaning only the top four will qualify for the Champions League as usual, United’s late lapse left them fifth on 59 points.

Leicester City are fourth, ahead of United on goal difference, with Chelsea third on 60 points. City and title winners Liverpool have already secured Champions League places for next season.

Southampton took a shock lead in the 12th minute when Paul Pogba was robbed by Danny Ings just outside the area and Nathan Redmond’s cross found Armstrong at the back post where the Scottish midfielder slotted home.

Rashford then had the ball in the net, converting a low cross from Luke Shaw, but it was ruled out for offside although the United striker did not have to wait long to level.

Pogba played the ball in to Martial who held off two Saints defenders before poking the ball to Rashford and the striker made no mistake with a left-foot finish in the 20th minute.

Three minutes later United had the lead, Bruno Fernandes fed Martial on the left and the French international cut inside and smashed the ball home.

However, the home side never got a real grip on the game in midfield against a Southampton side that moved the ball well and constantly pressed.

United had to finish the game with 10 men after Brandon Williams went off injured, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having no substitute opportunities, and they failed to hold on to the three points when Obafemi turned in a poorly defended corner at the back post.

James Ward-Prowse’s in-swinger was flicked on by Jan Bednarek and Obafemi got in front of Victor Lindelof to find the decisive touch.

“The second half was a bit of a slog, we were not good enough on the ball. We brought pressure on to ourselves but we felt we did enough to win the game,” said United captain Harry Maguire.

“We have improved on defending set plays. We had a terrible record at the start of the season but have been really good on them. Can’t get let him get a header in when we have four men around the goal so have to look at it.

“We are disappointed a the moment but we dust ourselves down tomorrow,” he added.

Premier League: United stay fifth after Saints grab last-gasp leveller

England limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan has said he felt really lucky not to be removed as captain after the 2015 World Cup fiasco. In 2015, England was knocked out of the 50-over World Cup in the group stages with the side failing to make it to the knockouts. But the Three Lions came back stronger and sealed an emphatic triumph in the 2019 edition of the showpiece tournament.

Morgan, who was speaking at an ICC podcast titled ‘CWC Rewind’ with Ian Bishop and Nasser Hussain and the English captain talked about the 2015 World Cup.

"The most significant appointment following the 2015 World Cup was the appointment of Andrew Strauss as the Director of Cricket. He actually had seen first hand what had happened during the World Cup, he recognised the need for significant change within the group," Morgan said during the interaction.

"For a guy to come in such a prominent role and to make changes in such a fast manner was very significant. I was kept on as skipper of the side and I do feel lucky to be retained as the skipper of the side, Trevor Bayliss was appointed as the coach and we started playing an aggressive brand of cricket and that was very exciting for all of us," he added.

During the interaction, Morgan also said the relationship with coach Trevor Bayliss was exceptional and it enabled the side to perform well. "I thought the relationship with Bayliss worked really well before he was appointed as the coach of England, we had spent some time with Kolkata Knight Riders, building the relationship with him did not take long," Morgan said. "Once we worked out what the goal was, it was about putting the strategy in place, Bayliss was ready to take the backseat," he added.

After the 2015 World Cup, England changed their approach in the white-ball format and went on to become a very aggressive side in the format. The management of the side chose white-ball specialists and this all proved fruitful as the side won the 2019 World Cup.

During the interaction with Morgan and Bishop, Nasser Hussain credited Morgan and coach Trevor Bayliss for keeping the mindset of the side clear and for not letting anyone doubt their approach. The Eoin Morgan-led side defeated New Zealand in the finals of the 2019 World Cup on the basis of the boundary-countback rule.

Felt lucky to be retained as captain after 2015 World Cup: Eoin Morgan

Jermaine Blackwood was the man of the hour for the <a href="England vs West Indies 1st Test: Blackwood, Gabriel steal show as visitors take 1-0 lead in series">West Indies in the recently concluded first Test against England</a> as the Windies batter scored a match-winning 95 in the second innings but was left disappointed after he was dismissed before the visitors could cross the winning line.&nbsp;

Blackwood said that he wasn’t thinking about the century but was more determined to take his team over the winning line. But an ill-timed lofted stroke, when he was at 95, allowed the ball to travel straight to the hands of James Anderson at mid-off. However, the Windies were still able to secure the historic win as they took a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

The 28-year-old has always been successful against England, averaging over 50 with his only Test century also registered against England in Antigua in 2015.

"I was very disappointed in myself when I got out at that stage of the game," Blackwood, who had scored 187 runs with a top score of 79 not out during his last tour of England, told the Jamaica Observer.

"It was very emotional for me when I got out, not because I got out, it was because I didn't take my team across the line. I wasn't thinking about the hundred, I was just thinking about winning the game for my team."

The right-handed batsman, who has scored 1469 runs in 29 Tests for England so far, acknowledged the confidence shown by his captain Jason Holder and coach Phil Simmons.

Coming to bat with West Indies tottering at 27-3, Blackwood rode his luck and guided his team closer to the target before a moment's lapse of concentration saw him hit straight to Jimmy Anderson at mid-off in the 61st over.

"When you know that the captain has all confidence in you it just makes you feel good. I know Jason from way back from my Under-15 days, so he knows what I'm capable of doing," he said.

ICC likely to discuss fate of T20 World Cup 2020 in next board meeting

England are set keep faith with Jos Buttler despite defeat to West Indies in the first Test of a three-match series, but time may be up for Joe Denly.

Captain Joe Root is set to return for the second Test starting on Thursday at Old Trafford after missing the four-wicket defeat in Southampton to attend the birth of his second child.

The England selectors have big decisions to make after again losing the game with the bat rather than the ball despite the controversial omission of Stuart Broad.

An under-par 204 in the first innings and the loss of five wickets for 30 runs on the fourth evening set the platform for the tourists to take first blood.

Denly and Buttler were involved in both passages and find themselves increasingly under pressure for their places -- the former being squeezed by Root's return and Zak Crawley's fine 76 on Saturday, the latter from Surrey gloveman Ben Foakes.

England head coach Chris Silverwood, though, has only offered strong reassurance to one of the duo.

Buttler has a Test average of just 23.22 since the start of 2019 and now only one hundred in 75 innings.

"I'm not gonna go down that road yet of putting Jos under pressure, because I don't think it's going to help him," said Silverwood. "First and foremost we want to give Jos the best opportunity to succeed.

"But I'm sure he is asking the same questions. He looked brilliant coming into this game, in practice and everything and he looked very good in the first innings. He just needs to go and make those big scores now doesn't he? He knows that as well.

"From our point of view it's just making sure that he feels confident in the environment he's in."

There looks certain to be change higher up the order, though, with Denly's knocks of 18 and 29 doing little to show that he can haul his performances up to the required standard for a long-term Test number three.

At just 22, Crawley is 12 years Denley's junior and by producing England's top score of the match in tense circumstances in the second innings he appeared to make an irresistible grab for the shirt.

"We're all desperate to see Joe do really well. We can see he's trying hard, he's training hard and he's a great bloke, hence why we all went to see him do well," said Silverwood.

"But obviously he's under pressure a little bit, yes. Zak is improving constantly. I think he certainly showed maturity and the innings he played was very good.

"We have some young players in that side that seem to have good heads on their shoulders, and he's one of them. That's what we are looking for."

ENG vs WI 2nd Test: England to back Buttler, but Denly in the firing line

England should not be overly reliant on express pace in the next two tests against West Indies and must consider alternating Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, former quick Darren Gough has said.

England opted for the express speed of Archer and Wood and the experience of James Anderson in Southampton but lost by four wickets in the series opener.

“I’ve said from the start — rotate Archer and Wood,” Gough, who played 58 tests between 1994-2003, told Sky Sport Cricket.

“We got a bit carried away, seeing Wood bowl really quickly in South Africa. We’ve seen Archer do it, but it’s very hard to do it every single game.”

Gough said England should also bring back Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes for the second test, which begins on Thursday at Manchester’s Old Trafford.

“I would rest Wood and Anderson at Old Trafford and bring in Broad and Woakes,” Gough said.

“That would be my plan then, with back-to-back test matches, you bring Anderson and Wood back (for the third test).”

Former captain Michael Vaughan said it would be unfair to criticise Archer, who claimed three second-innings wickets in Southampton, for not bowling consistently in excess of 90 miles per hour.

“The body just doesn’t allow you to do it every single over that you bowl,” Vaughan told BBC Radio 5.

“But when you get that click, that six or seven overs where everything is in sync and you see the ball flying down at 90mph-plus causing chaos, that’s why you put Jofra Archer in your team.”

ENG vs WI: Darren Gough suggests England rotate Jofra Archer and Mark Wood

With international cricket opening up, all eyes are on India as to when cricketing action will kick-start in the country. While the situation in the country is still grim with COVID-19 cases rising every day, fans are hopeful that live-action will commence soon. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) hands are tied as they can’t finalise any decision relating to the resumption of cricket in India without the approval of the central government and respective state governments.&nbsp;

The BCCI is keen to start cricket action, at least practice sessions, by the next month or so but would require approvals from central and state governments. And the Indian board is still expecting a topsy-turvy season with a lot of tweaks given the quarantine rules and other health guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

"Please remember, without the central government and respective state government approvals, the BCCI cannot do anything," TOI quoted a source as saying in a report.

<h2>Changes in proposed schedule likely</h2>

"The present (interim) schedule for Australia tour was released by Cricket Australia (CA) with the first Test to begin on December 3. Also, to note is a three-match T20 series that was scheduled ahead of the Tests, to be followed by a three-match ODI series," added the source.

Cricket Australia (CA) had earlier announced the schedule of India’s tour. However, with the T20 World Cup set to be postponed, there could be quite a few changes in the schedule of India’s tour of Australia The start of the Test series could very well be pushed by a week.&nbsp;

"One of those two - either T20s or ODIs - will have to be cancelled. Most likely the T20s because the format was put in place keeping the T20 World Cup in Australia in mind. Now, that' not happening, and IPL is. The start of the Test series will also be pushed by a week," say those in the know.

Forthcoming England’s tour of India where both the countries were scheduled to play five Tests could be reduced to three followed by T20Is and ODIs. &nbsp;

"The president talked about a shortened quarantine. What he may have meant was that players will go through two separate Corona tests before leaving for Australia and two tests after landing there and if all are negative, health authorities are indicating that two weeks of lockdown won't be necessarily mandatory. Teams can start practice," say sources.

"Changes will be made to that schedule too. England are likely to play three Tests in India instead of five, followed by five T20s and five ODIs. That will also help compensate the host broadcaster who lost the India-South Africa series in March due to Covid," sources added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the fate of the ICC T20 World Cup is set to be announced on July 15.

With international cricket opening up, all eyes are on India as to when cricketing action will kick-start in the country. While the situation in the country is still grim with COVID-19 cases rising every day, fans are hopeful that live-action will commence soon. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) hands are tied as they can’t finalise any decision relating to the resumption of cricket in India without the approval of the central government and respective state governments. The BCCI is keen to start cricket action, at least practice sessions, by the next month or so but would require approvals from central and state governments. And the Indian board is still expecting a topsy-turvy season with a lot of tweaks given the quarantine rules and other health guidelines amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes in proposed schedule likely "The present (interim) schedule for Australia tour was released by Cricket Australia (CA) with the first Test to begin on December 3. Also, to note is a three-match T20 series that was scheduled ahead of the Tests, to be followed by a three-match ODI series," added the source. Cricket Australia (CA) had earlier announced the schedule of India’s tour. However, with the T20 World Cup set to be postponed, there could be quite a few changes in the schedule of India’s tour of Australia The start of the Test series could very well be pushed by a week. "One of those two - either T20s or ODIs - will have to be cancelled. Most likely the T20s because the format was put in place keeping the T20 World Cup in Australia in mind. Now, that' not happening, and IPL is. The start of the Test series will also be pushed by a week," say those in the know. 'BCCI can't do anything without government approvals' - India's 2021-21 cricket schedule hangs in balance

A bilateral series between India and Pakistan could be helpful for international cricket, Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said while reflecting on the current health of international cricket. However, Mani said that the PCB doesn’t take India-Pakistan bilateral series into account while planning their schedule.

Notably, India and Pakistan have not held any bilateral series due to sour diplomatic relationship but both the arch-rivals continue to lock horns in International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events. The last time both the team met was in the ICC World Cup 2019, where the Men in Blue continued their winning run against Pakistan in 50-over World Cup.&nbsp;

<h2>Pakistan-India matches are the most-watched cricket matches in the world: Ehsan Mani</h2>

"Pakistan-India matches are the most-watched cricket matches in the world[...] It is good for the health of global cricket that we play against each other, however, in our planning we do not take into account any bilateral series against India," Mani told Cricbuzz.

Recently, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../official-asia-cup-2020-postponed-sri-lanka-to- host-tournament-in-2021-311999">Asia Cup 2020 became the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic as the event was postponed to 2021</a>. Notably, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have swapped hosting rights, which allows the latter to host the event in 2021 with Pakistan taking the baton in 2022.

Mani is of the view that the financial impact of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/.../official-asia-cup-2020-postponed-sri-lanka-to- host-tournament-in-2021-311999">postponement of Asia Cup</a> on Pakistan is minimal while adding Sri Lanka was given the hosting rights as they would be in “a better position” as compared to other countries due to COVID-19.&nbsp;

"The financial impact on Pakistan is minimal; the importance of the Asia Cup is that it generates funds for the development of the emerging cricket nations in Asia. There is [a] complete consensus within ACC on the timing of the Asia Cup," Mani said.

'Pakistan-India matches are...' - PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani opines on Indo-Pak bilateral cricket series

International cricket returned with a bang! Test cricket returned with its nerve-wracking sessions and battle between the willow and the red cherry. Before the first Test between England and the West Indies commenced at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, there were whispers how it would pan out. Will players be fully up for it, will not playing cricket for 117 days take a toll on the players? And every question was thrown out of the window as both England and West Indies produced cricket of the highest quality upon the return of international cricket.

The West Indies led by the ever-dependable Jason Holder clinched a fairly comfortable four-wicket win in Southampton while taking a 1-0 lead in the series. While the word comfortable may sound like a cake-walk, it wasn’t the case at all. The game felt like a pendulum as the dong moved to and fro between the two sides with each passing session.&nbsp;

Day 1 started with a game of hide&nbsp;and seek with the rain gods as the world witnessed little action on the first day. After a delayed start, England’s Test skipper for the match, Ben Stokes opted to bat first under overseas condition, on a pitch which certainly had some sort of moisture due to persistent rain in the build-up to the match. The move to bat first raised a few eyebrows.&nbsp;

The red ball, on which saliva can’t be used due to the ban imposed by the ICC to curb the spread of coronavirus, was handed over to Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel. But before the first ball of the match was bowled, all the players and staff took a knee in support for the Black Lives Matter movement.&nbsp;Ten balls into the game, Dom Sibley’s stumps were dislodged by a peach by Gabriel. The ball moved a bit but to some extent, it was a rusty judgement by the English opener. Rory Burns and Joe Denly took charge in the middle and saw off a splendid spell of bowling by Roach and Gabriel.&nbsp;

However, it was Gabriel again who produced magic to send the ball through the gates of Denly, reminding the Englishman of his IPL debut for KKR. Burns was next to follow and it was Gabriel again who did the damage.&nbsp;

Following the initial spell by Gabriel and Roach, it was time for ‘Captain West Indies’ to stand up and produce what he has been doing for the last few years. Even though Holder is not someone who would terrorise batsmen with his pace, he showed what damage testing line and length can do. Holder made the ball talk and there were three edges straight to the keeper Shane Dowrich as Ben Stokes (43), Ollie Pope (12) and Jos Buttler (35) were sent packing by the number one all-rounder in Test cricket.&nbsp;

Dom Bess kept the scoreboard ticking with a handy 31 not-out but the Holder and Gabriel were too hot to handle for the English lower-order as the hosts were bundled out for 204. Holder with six, Gabriel with four, shared all the wickets among themselves.&nbsp;

For the West Indies, openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell saw off the initial spell by James Anderson and Jofra Archer before taking the field on a bright sunny day on Day 3. A superb 65 by Brathwaite laid the platform for the visitors despite Campbell (28) and Shai Hope (16) departing without scoring much. Shamarh Brooks (39) showed glimpses of his highly-rated talent but it was Roston Chase’s 47 off 142 which built the&nbsp;road for the West Indies win. Dowrich with his gritty 61 threw some confidence and a lead of over 100 runs.&nbsp;

It was a lacklustre performance by the English bowlers in the first innings. While Jimmy Anderson looked like a lone warrior, swinging the ball away or even bringing it back with a break of the wrist, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood with speeds of over 90 mph looked like a mere shadow of themselves. Their barrage of bouncers was firmly dealt by before Stokes took it upon himself to do the damage. The end result? Four wickets for the number two ranked Test all-rounder in the world. Credit to Dom Bess, who toiled hard in his 19 overs to pick up two crucial wickets of Hope and Blackwood. The West Indies ended up posting 318 runs on the board.&nbsp;

With the sun out and a relatively drier and flatter track, Rory Burns and Dom Sibley stitched a 72-run opening stand before the former was sent packing Roston Chase, visitors’ only spin option. Sibley went on to score a half-century before falling prey to Gabriel. Joe Denly and Zak Crawley tried putting a partnership but the former was again subjected to a soft dismissal, falling for his own mishaps, again and again.&nbsp;

Stokes came up with a counter-attacking mood and scored a quick-fire 46 off 79 but&nbsp;Alzarri Joseph, after going wicket-less in the first innings, found the bullseye by dismissing Stokes and Crawley. Gabriel came back to life again and wreaked havoc while sending the lower and lower-middle order back to pavilion. Another impressive performance by the veteran and a fifer to his name. England were bundled out for 313 as the West Indies were given a target of 200 runs.&nbsp;

There was scrutiny towards Jofra Archer for being lazy in the first innings and many could sense he would come alive in the second innings, and that is what exactly happened. John Campbell was retired-hurt and Brathwaite was walking back to the hut in no time after the West Indies started their chase.

Mark Wood too clocked up his intensity and got rid of Shai Hope as the visitors saw them reeling at 27-3. Brooks again fall victim to Archer’s class and bagged a five-ball duck.&nbsp;

As England bowlers dominated the first 15 overs, everyone started to come at the edge of their seats anticipating a West Indies collapse. However, Chase and Blackwood had other plans. While Chase scored a gritty 37, Blackwood was the man of the hour for the West Indies as he scored 95. Dowrich chipped in with 20. Campbell came back to bat again and stitched winning partnership with skipper Holder to hand the West Indies an all-important win.

A forgettable start for Stokes as a captain. And for Holder, he continues to cement his own legacy in the history books.&nbsp;

England vs West Indies 1st Test: Blackwood, Gabriel steal show as visitors take 1-0 lead in series

International cricket returned from lockdown in style as the West Indies beat England by four wickets in the first Test at Southampton.

AFP Sport looks at five key points from a match that took place against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

<h2>Holder heroics</h2>

West Indies captain Jason Holder led from the front by taking a Test-best 6-42 in England's lowly first-innings 204 and the world's top-ranked all-rounder twice dismissed home counterpart Ben Stokes in this match as well.

He also showed plenty of tactical skill in the way he deployed his bowlers and had Stokes caught by the finer of two gully fielders he had cleverly deployed for the England talisman to spark a collapse that saw the hosts lose five wickets for 30 runs on Saturday.

<h2>Buttler's bad service</h2>

England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler's run of low scores in Test cricket continued with innings of 35 and nine at Southampton.

He was recalled to the Test side in one of Ed Smith's first acts as national selector in the hope he could transfer his one-day batting form into the five-day game.

But Buttler is now averaging a mediocre 21.38 from his last 11 Tests and the World Cup-winner also dropped Jermaine Blackwood on 20 before the West Indies batsman made a match-clinching 95 on Sunday.

England have Ben Foakes in their squad, with the Surrey wicketkeeper -- arguably a better gloveman than Buttler -- boasting a Test batting average of 41.30.&nbsp;

Foakes has also made one Test hundred in five matches compared to Buttler's one in 42.

<h2>Denly debate</h2>

The 33-year-old is in the England side as a specialist batsman but his dismissal for 29 on the fourth day means he has gone eight Test innings without reaching 40.

One of either Denly or Zak Crawley, who made 76 on Saturday, is set to make way when captain Joe Root returns for the second Test.

And it increasingly looks like Denly will be dropped with his innings on Saturday, which ended when he tamely chipped off-spinner Roston Chase to short midwicket, another example of an infuriating habit of throwing his wicket away after a sound start.&nbsp;

<h2>No crowds but plenty of passion</h2>

Spectators are barred from this three-match series as a health measure to combat COVID-19.

That had raised fears players might not be able to replicate their usual levels of intensity &nbsp;but there was no lack of effort or skill, even though England stand-in skipper Ben Stokes admitted the atmosphere was "strange". &nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Umpires need to get their eye in</h2>

This was an awkward match for English officials Richard Illingworth and Richard Kettleborough after the International Cricket Council relaxed rules on home umpires standing in Tests because of virus restrictions.

At one stage the pair saw five successive decisions overturned on review in favour of the West Indies.

The ICC have given teams an additional review each innings of this series to compensate for the lack of neutral officials and this Test was a reminder that umpires, just as much as players, need match time before entering the international arena.

England vs West Indies: Five things we learned from the first Test

Batting great Sachin Tendulkar has renewed demands for cricket rules to give greater weight to TV playbacks over umpires in making LBW decisions.

Tendulkar, a long-standing critic of the decision review system (DRS), returned to the fray after multiple LBW calls in the West Indies' victory over England in the first Test.

If a ball-tracking playback shows that less than 50 percent of a ball would hit the stumps then the umpire has the discretion to reject a leg-before-wicket appeal.

If an umpire rules a batsman not out and the fielding side calls for a review, 50 per cent of the ball must be hitting the stumps for the third umpire to overturn the on-field call.

Tendulkar feels this is unfair and wants the International Cricket Council to rethink the system.

"One thing I don't agree with, with the ICC, is the DRS they've been using for quite some time," Tendulkar said in an online conversation with West Indies legend Brian Lara.

The former India captain said the playback should trump the umpire no matter how much of the ball would hit the wickets.

"The only reason they (the batsman or the bowler) have gone upstairs is because they are unhappy with the on-field decision," said Tendulkar.

"So when the decision goes to the third umpire, let the technology take over; just like in tennis -- it's either in or out, there's nothing in between."

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh backed Tendulkar's position, saying&nbsp;on Twitter it was "1,000 percent correct".

India was the last Test nation to embrace DRS, in 2016. It was rumoured that Tendulkar had led opposition to the technology until his retirement in 2013.
