Stuart Broad was only one wicket away from becoming just the seventh bowler to take 500 Test wickets as England closed in on a series victory over the West Indies at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Broad's haul of 6-31 in 14 overs saw the West Indies bundled out for 197 in reply to England's first-innings 369 that featured his dashing 62.

England's second-innings 226-2 declared saw opener Rory Burns make 90 as the West Indies were set a huge target of 399 for victory.

And there was still time for Broad to reduce the tourists, who had no answer to his late movement off a good length, to 10-2 at stumps on the third day.

Broad had the struggling John Campbell caught at first slip for a duck by England captain Joe Root and then moved to 499 Test wickets when nightwatchman Kemar Roach was caught behind.

Broad bowled the final over of the day's play, with his last ball just missing Shai Hope's outside edge.

The only bowlers with more than 600 Test wickets are a trio of former spinners -- Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Australian Shane Warne (708) and India's Anil Kumble (619).

The only seamers ahead of Broad are his longtime England new-ball colleague James Anderson (589) and the retired pair of Australia's Glenn McGrath (563) and the West Indies' Courtney Walsh (519).

<h2>- 'Ridiculous achievement' -</h2>

Broad took all the West Indies wickets to fall on Sunday in a combined return of 6-22 in seven overs, with his burst of 4-11 in 22 balls ending the visitors' first innings after they had avoided the follow-on.

"It's a pretty ridiculous achievement to get to 500 (wickets)," said Burns. "Hopefully we can keep grabbing them for him."

England's second innings saw Burns and Dom Sibley (56) share a stand of 114 -- England's first century opening partnership in a home Test since Alastair Cook and Alex Hales put on 126 against Pakistan at Edgbaston in 2016.

England captain Joe Root had made a brisk 68 not out when he declared, amid concerns Monday's play could be washed out.

Burns, in common with Surrey team-mate Ollie Pope in England's first innings, got into the 90s without making it to three figures.

Not that the left-hander, who holed out against off-spinner Roston Chase, was too concerned.

"It was good to set up the team in a good position though, that was the most important thing."

West Indies coach Phil Simmons once again bemoaned the failure of his team's batsmen to back up the bowlers in a gruelling schedule of three back-to-back Tests that marks international cricket's return from the coronavirus lockdown.

"We haven't had any centuries in the series," he said. "There are two days left to bat and someone needs to get themselves a big hundred."

"There is plenty of time in the game so we need to be more determined to get big scores."

<h2>- Dowrich injury -</h2>

West Indies wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich was hit in the face by a 90mph Shannon Gabriel delivery that burst through his gloves and had to leave the field.

"He was lucky it came off the gloves first," said Simmons. "He has a little cut on the inside of his lip, but no damage to his teeth."

One-day international wicketkeeper Hope initially took over behind the stumps before Joshua Da Silva, the back-up gloveman in the Test squad but not in the XI for this match, was allowed on.

Da Silva nearly stumped Burns, on 12, off Chase but slipped as he tried to take off the bails.

Introduced to bring context to One-Day International (ODI) cricket, the Super League will determine qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with the top seven teams automatically booking their spot at the event in India.

Featuring 13 teams, the 12 ICC Full Members and the Netherlands, who qualified by winning the ICC World Cricket Super League 2015-17, the Super League will see each side play four home and four away three match series.

Commenting on the launch,&nbsp;Geoff&nbsp;Allardice, ICC General Manager - Cricket Operations, said,&nbsp;“We are delighted to get the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League underway with World Cup winners England against Ireland.

“The league will bring relevance and context to ODI cricket over the next three years, as qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is at stake. The Super League gives cricket fans around the world even more reasons to watch as the drama of league cricket unfolds.”

“The decision last week to move the World Cup back to late 2023 gives us more time to schedule any games lost due to COVID-19 and preserve the integrity of the qualification process, meaning it will be decided on the field of play, which is important.”

Eoin Morgan, England captain, said:&nbsp;“We’re looking forward to playing cricket again and to the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League. Given the situation, it will be quite different to the last time we played at home, when we lifted the World Cup at Lord’s, but it’s nice to be starting our journey for the next edition of the tournament.

“I’m sure cricket fans all over the world will be excited to see white-ball cricket resume and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“Ireland are a talented team who have shown over the years that they can beat the best on their day. We look forward to what promises to be an interesting series.”

Andrew Balbirnie, Ireland captain, said:&nbsp;“It’s a privilege to be playing in the inaugural series of the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League. It is obviously going to be a huge challenge taking on the team that won the World Cup just a year ago but we have prepared well and have taken confidence from our form over the early months of 2020.”

“What is important is that we are getting back on the field. I hope international cricket’s return is steady during these challenging times.

“I look forward to the Irish side putting on a good performance in the upcoming series as we start our campaign for World Cup qualification.”

The BCCI is likely to hand over a comprehensive Standing Operating Procedure (SOP) to the eight franchises for the upcoming <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl?page=1">IPL</a> in the UAE but there are a few pressing questions that all the stakeholders need to figure out in the coming days.

While it is expected that most of the franchises will be starting to send their recce teams to the UAE to check out the facilities as well as what kind of bio-secure environments that can be created.

Some of the franchises have questions which probably BCCI will need to answer in their SOPs.

<h2>Regarding players' families</h2>

This is a tricky issue that will totally depend on what BCCI states in its SOPs. A senior franchise official said that it will be "criminal" to keep players away from their partners and families for two months and that too in a sanitised environment where there will be least social contact during the course of the tournament.

"During normal times, the wives and girlfriends, at times families join the players during a specified time but this is completely different scenario. If families travel, can they be confined to rooms without being able to move around normally?" an official asked.

"There will be players who have kids aged between 3 to 5 and how do you keep them in a room for two months," he added.

<h2>Will smaller boutique hotels or resorts work better?</h2>

While top cricket teams are used to staying in five-star facilities but it is a difficult proposition to just rent out multiple five star hotels just for the team where other visitors won't be allowed.

A senior BCCI official, who was an integral part of 2014 IPL in Dubai, feels that in the desert city, even three-star boutique hotels are as good as five star and there are resorts which are easier to be rented out completely.

"Look every franchise won't be able to match up to say Mumbai Indians, who will undoubtedly have the best set-up in these trying times. They have private jets, can even take doctors from their super speciality hospital, rent out a five-star hotel. Others need to check out what's best for them. May be a beach resort," the official said.

He gave a logic of having resorts with separate cottages which nullifies the threat of centralised air conditioning, as there is chance of infection spreading through AC ducts.

<h2>Team Bus driver and local security officer</h2>

Normally at any venue, the BCCI (on foreign tours liaising with host Board) and, in this case, the franchises in co-ordination with the Emirates Cricket Board will be hiring local transport, including luxury bus which carries the team to stadiums.

Normally, the locals who drive the bus leave for home after the day's work but in this case, they might have to be asked to stay in the bio-secure environment for two months.

"If every day, they are going to go home, they are exposed to outside environment and you have to negate the risk to minimum," a top franchise official said.

Ditto for the local security personnel who will be deployed on and off the field for the teams. A lot of franchises would ideally want them to be accommodated in hotels.

<h2>Catering staff at grounds serving players</h2>

Will there be a separate bio-bubble for the catering staff who normally serve the players during the break? They might be tested every day just like the drivers and security officers and they can also be included in the bio-secure environment.&nbsp;

IPL Bio-Bubble: Franchises fret over WAGS, local drivers, security, hospitality

The World Test Championship schedule has been thrown haywire by the COVID-19 pandemic and its much-awaited final next year will depend on the number of rescheduled bilateral series after the disruption, ICC GM (Cricket Operations) Geoff Allardice said on Monday.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown the Futures Tours and Programme (FTP) into disarray with the T20 World Cup already postponed to give member nations time to complete their bilateral commitments.

"We are currently in discussion with members on what their plans are around rescheduling their series," Allardice answered to a query from PTI during an interaction with news agencies.

Given the circumstances and tight schedules, ICC might have to postpone the June final at the Lord's as Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, England have backlog series but Allardice, a former Australian first-class cricketer, would like to wait a bit more.

"Obviously their teams have re-scheduled them (their engagements) as quickly as possible. Depending on how many of them (postponed series) could be re-scheduled within the available time will give us the most appropriate timing for the final. But at this stage the final is scheduled for June 2021," he said.

"We are working with the members on that...Countries are now working out on how to resume and when it's best to resume and they are all in their process of looking at calenders," Allardice added.

Allardice also made it clear that the ICC's role in this scenario would be of a facilitator for the members as the body can't directly get involved in drawing up their calendars.

"I don't see us taking a greater role in terms of being pro-active. ICC plays a role in coordinating competitions, but it has no role in scheduling as it is on members," he clarified.

He admitted that there is a lot of "uncertainty around when international cricket can resume in a number of countries" considering that the situation is different everywhere.

Allardice also said that since 2018, when the ICC ODI League was first devised, the global body has tried to recommend a bit of balance between ODIs and T20 International formats with bilaterals featuring three 50-over and an equal number of 20-over games.

"The rules around league were established, back in 2017-18, a decision was taken at that time that T20Is and ODis will be three-match series.

"Earlier, it used to be five ODIs and a T20 International. Probably it changes the balance but when the league was designed, the countries agreed that there would be three ODIs and three T20 Internationals," he added.
While South Africa has started with 'Three Team Cricket' or better known as 3TC on an experimental basis, ICC will only be focussing on the three formats at its disposal.

In 3TC, three teams of eight players compete in a single match. Each team bats for a total of 12 overs, split between two periods of six overs apiece from each of the other two teams in the match.

"Look the ICC's position is at the moment we have three international formats but members are encouraged to try out new format," Allardice said.

"We are focussed on these three formats (Tests, ODis, T20Is). We are aware of what's happening in member countries but it has not come on the ICC radar as yet," the GM put forth global body's point.
Talking about women's cricket Allardice refused to buy the notion that women's game is likely to suffer more because of the pandemic compared to men's cricket.

"Women's cricket is as much affected as men's cricket. The planning is going ahead for the event and the situation is being monitored."

<h2>TV Umpires to call no ball during ODI Super League</h2>

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, the front-foot no balls will be exclusively monitored by the third umpire and teams guilty of slow overrate will face points deduction.

It was during last year's India-West Indies limited overs series when the ICC ruled that the front foot no ball will be monitored by TV umpires on a trial basis.

"It is something that will be used on Thursday (between Ireland and England) and for the series to be played," Allardice was quoted as saying by the website.

"Certainly there is the importance of the free hit in white-ball cricket, and getting no-balls called accurately.

"That is considered to be an important feature. The Cricket Committee has recommended that and it's in the playing conditions for the World Cup Super League."

ICC discussing rescheduling of WTC Test series with Member Nations: ICC GM

Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday confirmed that they have received the official Letter of Intent from the BCCI to host the 2020 edition of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL).&nbsp;</a>

“We have received the (official) letter and now wait on the decision from the Indian Government which will ink the final deal.” said Mubashshir Usmani, Emirates Cricket Board Secretary General.&nbsp;

While the Board waits for notice from BCCI that the Indian Government has approved to move the IPL from India (to the UAE) Usmani stated both Boards have fully mobilised and have instigated discussions with the relevant authorities, including their respective internal working-committees, in preparation of hosting the tournament (touted as starting September 19th&nbsp;with the final proposed for November 8th) in a safe, protected environment.

Emirates Cricket Board confirms BCCI Letter of Intent to host the IPL 2020

With the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> heading to the UAE, moving players for the tournament would be tough task for the organisers but for BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit head Ajit Singh, the move to conduct the IPL in the UAE will make monitoring the event “slightly easier” as it would be restricted to just three venues.&nbsp;

IPL 2020 is set to start in the UAE from September 19 with the final slated to be played on November 8. However, only three stadiums in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi will host the 60 games over the period of 51 days.

"In the UAE, it will be slightly easier doing (monitoring ACU activity) as there are only three grounds compared to eight venues in India. That's not an issue at all. Once the schedule comes, we will decided the workforce," Singh told PTI during an interaction. The UAE, in 2014, hosted the first part of IPL due to general elections in India.

Singh said currently, there are "eight ACU officers who are on BCCI payrolls".

However, monitoring all the 60 matches as well as keeping an eye on hotels will depend on the kind of bio-secure bubble created for the tournament, Singh reckoned.&nbsp;

"It's too early to comment on measures as we need to first check what kind of bio-security measures will be created. We first need to see how things are taking shape there and we will deploy our men accordingly," Singh said.

"In case, we need men, we will hire them," he added.

The BCCI can even ask for help from the ICC, which is headquartered in Dubai, given the global body’s huge team of ACU officials.&nbsp;

"If it is a private league that approaches ICC for hiring ACU officers and they agree to cover the event, then the league organisers bear the costs," the senior official told PTI.

The BCCI might need some more workforce considering that each team will have one dedicated 'Integrity Officer' as per rules.

"It is the BCCI that will designate one Integrity officer per team during the course of the IPL. Now whether they will be a part of the bio-bubble (if created), we don't know, but the Integrity officer is completely their domain," a senior franchise official clarified the rules.

The UAE is known to being a hot bed for bookies and fixers but the ACU head is confident that intelligence gathering won’t be affected by the shift of tournament.&nbsp;

"Whoever is involved (bookies/fixers) they are all inter-connected. If we have our sources here, they also know how these bookies operate.

"If they get an information of this place, they will get an information of that place also. It's not so much of an issue," he said.

Manchester Silva maestro David Silva played his last game in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> in Cityzens’ 5-0 win over Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Arguably one of the finest to have graced the English top-flight, Silva didn’t get a rousing ovation as the match was played in an empty stadium but ‘Merlin’ did get an emotional farewell from the players and staff with teary eyed fans expressing their love on social media.&nbsp;

Silva won 11 trophies in 10 seasons for Man City including four Premier League titles but his eyes will be on the coveted UEFA Champions League as the Blues gear up for the second-leg match against Real Madrid and possibly the ‘Final 8’ phase of the tournament.

The 34-year-old Spaniard, who netted 60 goals in 308 Premier League appearances, received a memorable farewell from the fans on social media platform Twitter.&nbsp;

IPL 2020 to be played between September 19 and November 8, confirms Brijesh Patel

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Friday asked his team to push for a positive result in their final match of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> against Leicester City, that can define their UEFA Champions League hope for the next season.&nbsp;

The Red Devils sit third in the Premier League table heading into the final matchday of the 2019-20 season but a defeat against the Foxes could see them slide to fifth given Chelsea avoid a defeat at home to Wolves.&nbsp;

"We've given ourselves a good chance of being in the Champions League next year but we can't go into a game thinking about what the outcome can be," Solskjaer said.

"We've just got to go and perform and perform at a high enough level and standard so we can get a result.
"We want to go there and dominate the game. We wanted to get this position to be able to go to Leicester and having to beat them and we're not going to change our approach. We want to go there and try and win the game."

Solksjaer’s Manchester United have managed to overturn an eight-point gap to Leicester in just eight matches since the restart but have looked sluggish in recent games while crashing out of the FA Cup and drawing 1-1 against West Ham on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"We're going to go into it with a strong frame of mind. It's not job done, we have got to this point and we have one more game in this season," added Solskjaer.

"That's this season, this is a journey for this team. This is one extra step on the journey for this team, which we've come a long way.

"Mentally I think we've shown more robustness, resilience, when we've lost the first goal in games, for example, but we've also shown the heights when everything's flowing, which you can't expect every time.

"I'm delighted with how the development looks."

A comeback to UEFA Champions League is crucial for the Reds and their finances and Solskjaer’s men will have another go at the UCL spot via Europa League should they lose at Leicester on Sunday.

Man Utd's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Red Devils to 'dominate' Leicester on final match day

England and West Indies kick started the third and final Test of the series at the Old Trafford in Manchester on Friday. To everyone’s surprise Jason Holder elected to bowl first after winning the toss as he said the visitors would look to utilize the moisture and get some early wickets under their belt.&nbsp;

Windies pacer Kemar Roach didn’t disappoint his captain as the veteran dismissed English opener Dom Sibley for a duck with a peach of a delivery in the very first over of the match. Roach fired an in-dipper to Sibley as the centurion from the second Test missed the flick only to be caught plumb in front of the stumps.

Roach was absolutely pumped as the Windies speedster nailed the plan to bowl Sibley full and straight after watching his marathon knock in Manchester in the second Test.&nbsp;

Holder opted to field first as the Windies made one change in the playing XI with Rahkeem Cornwall coming in for Alzarri Joseph.&nbsp;

“With the overhead conditions, there's a little bit moisture in the surface, we are going to try and make most of it. The guys have prepared very well with a couple of days off. We have made one change. Rahkeem Cornwall comes in for Alzarri Joseph. It's basically horses for courses - Rahkeem is a match-winner. He (Gabriel) is fine, he has bowled really well for us. There is something to play for and I'm sure both teams are hoping to keep it (Wisden Trophy),” said Holder after the coin flip.&nbsp;

Whereas, England captain Joe Root said that it was must-win game for the hosts.

“I feel like we've got a well-balanced team. Woakes as an all-rounder replaces Ben. Jofra is ready to play. He's got full support of the team. Stokes is in great form with the bat. He's capable of scoring another big one. It's a great time for him to be playing and for us to be playing alongside him. It's a must-win game for us,” Root said.

'IPL 2020 is here!' - Twitterati left overjoyed as tournament dates are revealed

England will be able to recall Jofra Archer, described by skipper Joe Root as bowling "at the speed of light", for the decisive third Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford on Friday after the pace spearhead suffered online racist abuse.

Archer was included in a 14-man squad named Thursday after missing England's series-levelling win at the same ground following a breach of coronavirus protocols caused when he made an unauthorised trip home.

In a Daily Mail column published on Wednesday, the 25-year-old Barbados-born Archer admitted to an error of judgement but said he had not "committed a crime".

He added some of the criticism he had faced on social media following the incident had been racist.

"I need to be 100 percent mentally right so that I can throw myself into my cricket this week," Archer wrote.&nbsp;

But having reassured England captain Joe Root and coach Chris Silverwood about his frame of mind, Archer could return for a match that will decide a three-Test campaign all square at 1-1.

"Jofra will be ready for it," Root told reporters on Thursday. "He's bowled the speed of light over the last couple of days in spicy nets so it wasn't much fun for our batters."

Turning to the abuse Archer had received on social media, Root said: "Obviously you can't understand all of it, some of which is really disgusting, racial abuse and other things.&nbsp;

"But he needs to know he doesn't have to deal with it on his own, he's got good people around him who want him to be happy, to enjoy his cricket and life&nbsp;away from the sport."

<h2>- Stokes concern -</h2>

Meanwhile England have a worry over the bowling fitness of Ben Stokes following his starring role during their 113-run win last time out, when he rose to the top of the Test all-rounder rankings with scores of 176 and 78 not out, as well as taking three wickets.&nbsp;

But he pulled up during his final over, with Root saying Stokes had suffered a quad injury.

England have all six of their frontline pacemen available.&nbsp;

They could play four of them and pair veteran new-ball duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad for the first time this series if Stokes, now also the world's number three ranked Test batsman, cannot bowl.

It would be tough on the consistent Chris Woakes were he to be dropped and spinner Dom Bess could make way as well if England decide Root's occasional off-breaks offer sufficient variety.

West Indies, who hold the Wisden Trophy, could select off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall for his first match this series.

So far they've relied on the same pace quartet, backed up by batting all-rounder Roston Chase's off-breaks.

But the 6ft 6in Cornwall, who weighs around 22 stone, may get his chance after taking 10 wickets in just his second Test against Afghanistan in November.

"If he does come in he is a wicket-taker and he has proven himself to be a match-winner," said West Indies captain Jason Holder.

While concerns have been raised about how the West Indies fast bowlers will pull up, batting appears to be the biggest issue as they go in search of their first Test series victory in England for 32 years.

Shai Hope has long struggled to recapture the form that saw him score his only two hundreds when the West Indies defeated England at Headingley three years ago.

But Holder said: "I'm 100 percent behind Shai, we all know what he can produce."&nbsp;

Whatever the outcome, there is no denying the debt of both gratitude and finance the England and Wales Cricket Board owes the West Indies in helping them reduce a potential loss of hundreds of millions of pounds by going ahead with the first major international cricket series since lockdown.

Holder's focus, however, remained on the task at hand.

"We still have a really good opportunity to win this series and everybody's upbeat for the occasion because we know what's at stake."

"But he needs to know he doesn't have to deal with it on his own, he's got good people around him who want him to be happy, to enjoy his cricket and life away from the sport." - Stokes concern - Meanwhile England have a worry over the bowling fitness of Ben Stokes following his starring role during their 113-run win last time out, when he rose to the top of the Test all-rounder rankings with scores of 176 and 78 not out, as well as taking three wickets. But he pulled up during his final over, with Root saying Stokes had suffered a quad injury. England have all six of their frontline pacemen available. But Holder said: "I'm 100 percent behind Shai, we all know what he can produce." Whatever the outcome, there is no denying the debt of both gratitude and finance the England and Wales Cricket Board owes the West Indies in helping them reduce a potential loss of hundreds of millions of pounds by going ahead with the first major international cricket series since lockdown. Holder's focus, however, remained on the task at hand. "We still have a really good opportunity to win this series and everybody's upbeat for the occasion because we know what's at stake."

'Speed of light' Archer returns for England as West Indies eye history

The accolades have been pouring in for England all-rounder Ben Stokes since his superb player of the match display in the second Test against the West Indies at Old Trafford.

England's talisman went to the top of the Test all-rounder rankings after helping the hosts square the three-match series at 1-1 with two perfectly judged innings -- a painstaking 176 and a rapid 78 not out -- as well as three key wickets.

"Where would England be without him?," former captain Michael Vaughan told William Hill.&nbsp;

"If you look at the last two years, every single England win you could argue that Ben Stokes played the pivotal role."

Meanwhile James Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, promptly hailed Stokes as the best all-rounder he'd played with, surpassing even 2005 Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff, heading into Friday's decider with the West Indies.

But is it yet right to rank Stokes above Ian Botham, the man whose England wickets record Anderson broke and widely regarded as the country's best all-rounder of the modern era?

Since the start of 2019, Stokes has averaged over 55 with the bat and under 29 with the ball in Test cricket.

The 29-year-old's corresponding Test career figures, however, stand at 38.58 and 31.73.

Botham finished his 102-Test career with a batting average of 33.54 and 383 wickets at 28.40.

Left-handed batsman Stokes already has 10 hundreds from 65 Tests.

It will be a major surprise if, as arguably a more versatile run-getter, he does not surpass Botham's tally of 14 before he's finished.

<h2>- 'Beyond ordinary mortals' -</h2>

But whereas Botham often took the new ball, such is the current depth of England's bowling resources that Stokes is mainly deployed as a fourth seamer.

"Stokes will prove to be the more reliable run‑scorer but he will never be able to match Botham the bowler when he was at his lithe peak between 1978 and 1981," former England off-spinner Vic Marks wrote in the Observer.&nbsp;

"Both impose their will on proceedings in a manner way beyond ordinary mortals," added Marks, a team-mate of Botham's at Somerset.&nbsp;

Yet for all his heroics, notably last year when he starred in England's World Cup triumph and oversaw a staggering one-wicket Test win over Australia at Headingley with a breathtaking hundred, Stokes hasn't quite reshaped a series the way Botham did the 1981 Ashes.

Having been stripped of the England captaincy, with the hosts 1-0 down, Botham's remarkable, attacking centuries at Headingley and Old Trafford, as well as a stunning spell of five wickets for one run at Edgbaston, saw England to a trio of victories in a 3-1 series win.

And despite Stokes' brilliance in the field, he's yet to match Botham, who revolutionised the position of second slip by standing yards in front of the cordon while taking a succession of staggering catches.

But Stokes, as Anderson pointed out, has room for improvement.

"He's becoming the best all-rounder that England's ever had," Anderson said. "There's no reason why he can't go on and be even better."

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL</a> franchises from the BCCI is set to be the focal point of discussion when IPL Governing Council meets in few days’ time. Since the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mens-t20-world-cup-2020-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-pandemic-icc-314722">official postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020</a>, the Indian cricket board is planning meticulously to conduct <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">IPL 2020</a> in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and are seeking an approval from the central government for their request for a shift due to rising cases of COVID-19 in Inda.&nbsp;

"There will be three principal points on the agenda and that will primarily be discussed as and when the GC meets," a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The primary points are as follows:

<h2>1)&nbsp;Shifting to UAE, dates, venues, matches:</h2>

After getting green signal from government departments, the BCCI will inform the ECB (Emirates Cricket Board) for hosting the IPL 2020. &nbsp;

"As far as I know, they are not curtailing the tournament. We will have all the 60 matches in the old format where teams play 14 games," a senior official of one of the popular franchise said.

The duration of IPL 2020 is set to be between 44 to 48 days depending on the double headers that BCCI approves. As per the original schedule, there were just five double headers on Sundays but given the current circumstances, the number of double headers could increase.

<h2>2) SOP for teams, bio-bubble, training facilities:</h2>

There are three grounds available in the UAE -- Dubai International Stadium, Sheikh Zayed Stadium (Abu Dhabi) and the Sharjah ground. Furthermore, the BCCI is set to rent the grounds of the ICC Academy for training purposes.&nbsp;

The ICC Academy has two full-sized cricket grounds along with 38 turf pitches, 6 indoor pitches, a 5700 square foot outdoor conditioning area along with physiotherapy and medicine centre.

"The teams that will be stationed in Dubai can practice at the ICC Academy by paying a fee," the senior official said.

As per the health protocol in Dubai, people carrying negative COVID-19 test report don’t have to go for quarantine. Also there is DXB app (similar to Aarogya Setu) in India which players and officials need to download.

"The hotels where we book rooms, the floors that will have our team members will be a sanitized areas and that will be done in consultation with hotel authorities," a franchise official informed.

If commercial flights are given an approval then most franchises will be heading to the UAE in the fourth week of August.

<h2>3) Issues with broadcaster</h2>

There will be talks on the duration of the tournament which is massive for host broadcasters considering they paid a whopping sum for the deal. Discussions are expected to be on the timing of evening/night matches whether they should be held at usual 8pm IST slot or be pushed forward by half an hour.&nbsp;

In case the tournament starts between September 26 and 29 and goes on till November 14 (Diwali), double-headers might not exceed more than seven which will be good news for broadcasters.

IPL GC Agenda: Focus on SOPs, broadcasters' demand keeping UAE time in mind

England National Cricket Selectors on Thursday announced 14-man strong squad for the third and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-vs-west-indies-3rd-test-preview-manchester-gears-up-for-series-decider-315395">final Test against the West Indies at the Old Trafford in Manchester, which is scheduled to start on Friday 24</a>.

After missing the second Test for breaching bio-secure protocols, star speedster Jofra Archer finds his way into the squad with James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran among the pacers, giving selection headaches to captain Joe Root.&nbsp;

Ben Stokes retained his spot in the squad after talks of him getting rested for the series decided surfaced in the build-up to the match. Jos Buttler, despite being completely off-form in the recent times in the longest format of the game, continues to be in the squad and it would be interesting to see whether he gets the nod in the final playing XI.&nbsp;

The likes of Dom Sibley, Rory Burns, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Dom Bess continue be the mainstay of the batting line-up and are expected to start in the Manchester Test.

With all of Anderson, Broad, Archer, Woakes, Curran and Wood named in the squad, Root and head coach Chris Silverwood have been left spoilt for choices. Archer and Wood were pretty inconsistent in the series opener while Woakes and Curran helped England equalize the series and hence the team selection could raise a few eyebrows if the winning combination is tweaked to accommodate either of Anderson, Archer or Wood. &nbsp;

“It is disappointing and also a bit amusing at times. And we had that recently when the ex-sports minister did quite a frivolous claim and we had to go in and answer questions,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“Actually, to go through and answer those questions, and making those statements was really really healthy for the game, whether it was me, the selectors, Mahela or anyone else. People protested outside Sri Lanka Cricket’s headquarters after Sangakkara and Jayawardene were questioned as the fans criticized the government for harassing their heroes over false allegations. Sri Lankan police soon cleared all the selectors and cricketers as no evidence was found.

“The game of cricket needs people of integrity and people who are not afraid to speak their minds,” Sangakkara said on the probe.

“And also when you have any questions to be answered, you don’t need to hide, you can answer any of those. When it comes to politics, when you have politically and morally corrupt individuals, who are affiliated with the sport even in an official capacity, you understand where all this comes from and you don’t have to be afraid to second guess what their motivations are,” he added.

England and West Indies are set to go into the third and final match of the Test series at the Old Trafford in Manchester. The three-match series has so far been an enthralling encounter between the two sides with both winning one game each. With the series firmly locked at 1-1, the finale promises to be an edge-of-the-set contest.

West Indies started the series with a four-wicket win against England in Southampton with the visitors standing out with both ball and the willow. However, England fought back strong in the second Test and equalized the series with a thumping 113-run win.&nbsp;

The third match of the series comes with plenty of headaches for both England and Windies camp. While team selection is a major issue going into the series decider, weather forecast is something which won’t make the English team happy. Notably, a draw is enough for the Windies to take the Wisden Trophy back to the Caribbean.&nbsp;

<h2>A debut for Chemar Holder on cards? Will Rahkeem Cornwall get a game?</h2>

West Indies bowlers looked tired and sluggish in the second Test after a phenomenal outing in the opener. While Shannon Gabriel struggled throughout the course of the match, Kemar Roach and Jason Holder looked out of their usual rhythm. That brings the likes of Chemar Holder, Rahkeem Cornwall into the scene but will Jason pick inexperienced guns in such a high-profile decider? That remains to be seen.

<h2>Selection headache in England camp as well</h2>

For England, the selection headache is immense. The entire pace bowling department consisting the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and Mark Wood are available. While Wood, Archer and Anderson played the Southampton Test which England lost, Broad, Woakes and Curran helped England fight back in the series. Dropping Anderson at his home ground, in the final Test, would be a massive call by Joe Root. And for Woakes or Curran, missing out after solid performance in the second Test would be a heartbreak.&nbsp;

<h2>Rain gods to play spoilsport?</h2>

Weather forecast, too, isn’t great for cricket. With Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday expected to be hit by persistent showers which makes the likelihood of a draw a major possibility.&nbsp;

England vs West Indies 3rd Test, Preview: Manchester gears up for series decider

England will be heading into the third Test against West Indies at the Old Trafford in Manchester in what promises to be a nail-biting series finale. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mens-t20-world-cup-2020-postponed-due-to-coronavirus-pandemic-icc-314722">postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020 by the ICC</a> took social media by storm. “Ultimately a powerful man, or a powerful cricket board they run the policy and they make sure that you suffer. T20 WC and Asia Cup could have been played this year, this was a chance for India and Pakistan to play against each other but they let it go. There are a lot of reasons behind this I don’t want to go into details," Akhtar told Geo Cricket.

“T20 WC could have been played but me and Rashid have said this repeatedly that they won’t let it happen, it won’t happen. IPL shouldn’t get damaged, the T20 World Cup can go to hell. India needs to save cricket immediately otherwise it won’t affect my era.

“The quality of cricket will decline but people will continue to make millions of dollars from the sport. Even the following will reduce just like it did in Pakistan after the 2017 Champions Trophy triumph,” the former Pakistan pacer added.

"Cricket boards around the world, be it India, Pakistan or England, they mostly look at the financial packages. All the boards are in this together, not just the BCCI alone. Everybody was in agreement with this decision, it's not just India who stand to benefit if the T20 World Cup didn't happen," said Latif.

"The T20 WC could have been played in February-March but it would have affected Pakistan (due to PSL 2020). Then in April-May the IPL was scheduled so the BCCI would have been affected, then in November-December Australia are supposed to host the Big Bash League. Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, the two main office bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got a lifeline of two weeks after a Super Court of India bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao on Wednesday agreed to hear the plea filed by the Indian board after two weeks. The hearing of the case was today but now has been postponed by two weeks.

The BCCI had filed a petition on April 21 in the Supreme Court of India seeking an extension to the tenures of Shah and Ganguly till 2025. As per the BCCI’s new constitution, that was approved by the apex court in August 2018 on the basis of reforms suggested by Justice RM Lodha committee, a cooling off period of three years in compulsory after completing six years as an office-bearer in state association or the BCCI.

Ganguly had less than a week for his stint as the BCCI president to be completed while Shah’s term has already ended. Notably, Ganguly was the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) whereas Shah was a joint secretary in the Gujrat Cricket Association (GCA).

On Tuesday, IPL spot-fixing case petitioner Aditya Verma, also the&nbsp;secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar, said his lawyers won't oppose a waiver of cooling-off period when the apex court hears the plea. Verma's original petition led to the Supreme Court forming the Lodha panel which recommended a number of changes, including the cooling-off period.

"I have always maintained that Sourav Ganguly is the best man to lead BCCI. I believe Dada and Jay Shah should get a full term to again stabilise BCCI," Verma told PTI.

India’s National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) has been suspended for a second period of up to six months for not conforming to international standards, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has said.

The New Delhi-based laboratory had previously been suspended in August following a WADA site visit, prohibiting it from carrying out anti-doping activities, including all analyses of urine and blood samples.

"In February 2020, when the six-month suspension period elapsed ... some outstanding non-conformities had not been addressed successfully," WADA said in a statement.

WADA’s Laboratory Expert Group “recommended the initiation of further disciplinary proceedings against the laboratory based on the outstanding non-conformities”.

WADA said the disciplinary proceedings were carried out by an independent committee that recommended an additional six-month suspension which began on July 17.

According to the World Anti-Doping Code, the laboratory has the option to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the WADA decision.

If the laboratory satisfies WADA’s Laboratory Expert Group that it has addressed the issues it may apply for reinstatement early but a failure to do so could lead to another similar suspension, WADA added.

South Africa’s limited-overs skipper Quinton de Kock has revealed that AB de Villiers was on the verge of making his international comeback and play the T20 World Cup which was earlier scheduled to be hosted by Australia later this year before the showpiece tournament was postponed amid COVID-19 pandemic.

De Villiers has time and time again expressed his willingness to play for South Africa in the T20 World Cup but doubts of his much awaited international comeback hangs in balance after the postponement of the tournament.&nbsp;

“He was definitely in line. If fit, I would have loved to have AB de Villiers. I think any team would have loved to have AB de Villiers in their team. While we were pushing for him, now we will have to see when the T20 World Cup is going to happen now,” de Kock said on the Cricket Connected show.

After months on discussion and uncertainty, Cricket Australia welcomed International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision saying that it provided clarity ahead of the upcoming home season including the much-awaited Test series against India.

The postponement of the T20 World Cup also formally opens up a window for the highly-anticipated <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a>, which is likely to be held in the United Arab Emirates.

However, despite the official announcement, it is not clear whether the T20 World Cup will now be held in Australia or India with the latter originally slated to host the 2021 edition, which has been shifted to 2022.&nbsp;

Under the new arrangements announced on Monday, either Australia or India will host the next T20 World Cup in October-November 2021, then the other nation will hold it in 2022.

The 50-over World Cup in India, originally due to be played in March-April 2023, will be pushed back to October-November of that year, with the final on November 26.

Hockley said CA did not have a preference for hosting the T20 tournament in 2021 or 2022.

"We just want to see two great events go ahead, whether it's '21 or '22 in Australia I'm sure we'll put on a fantastic event," he said.

Hockley further said that Australia’s Test schedule remained unchanged with a one-off match against Afghanistan in late November followed by four Tests against India in December-January. However, he added that he was doubtful that Australian government would agree to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s suggestion that India could undergo a shortened quarantine after arriving in Australia.

"I think that two-week quarantine period is pretty well defined," Hockley said.

"What we're working on is that even within that quarantine environment the players will have the absolute best training facilities, so their preparation for the matches is an optimal as it can possibly be."

Australian organisers said postponement the T20 World Cup 2020 was “absolutely inevitable” as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the showpiece tournament to be delayed by a year. After months on discussion and uncertainty, Cricket Australia welcomed International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision saying that it provided clarity ahead of the upcoming home season including the much-awaited Test series against India. The postponement of the T20 World Cup also formally opens up a window for the highly-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, which is likely to be held in the United Arab Emirates. However, despite the official announcement, it is not clear whether the T20 World Cup will now be held in Australia or India with the latter originally slated to host the 2021 edition, which has been shifted to 2022. ALSO READ: Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 postponed due to coronavirus pandemic: ICC "It allows us to focus with real clarity on the summer ahead" COVID-19 has played havoc with international sport and CA acting chief executive Nick Hockley said there was no way Australia could host a 16-nation event with the pandemic still raging. "I think the decision to postpone was absolutely inevitable," he told reporters. "It allows us to focus with real clarity on the summer ahead." ALSO READ: Tickets bought for postponed T20WC will remain valid if Australia hosts it in 2021: ICC Under the new arrangements announced on Monday, either Australia or India will host the next T20 World Cup in October-November 2021, then the other nation will hold it in 2022. T20 World Cup 2020 postponement was 'inevitable', say Australia

Ben Stokes impressed with both bat and ball as England beat the West Indies by 113 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford on Monday.

West Indies, set a nominal 312 to win, were bowled out for 198 on the fifth and final day as England levelled the three-match series at 1-1.

All-rounder Stokes made 176 in England's first-innings 469-9 declared and a dashing 78 not out on Monday that set up another declaration by home captain Joe Root.

Stokes capped a dominant individual display as he also took two key wickets Monday after Stuart Broad's early treble helped reduce the West Indies to 37-4.

Shamarh Brooks (62) and Jermaine Blackwood (55) kept England at bay during a fifth-wicket stand of exactly 100.

But Stokes, yet again proved a partnership breaker when his short ball had Blackwood, who made a match-clinching 95 in West Indies' four-wicket win in the first Test at Southampton, gloving to diving wicketkeeper Jos Buttler on the stroke of tea.

From then on, it always looked likely England would finish the job, despite having no spectators to roar them on in this behind-closed-doors campaign.

"It was a brilliant week's cricket from the outset," Root told Sky Sports. "Going on and making a 400-plus score for the third time in four games, we're making real progress."

<h2>- 'Stokes getting better and better' -</h2>

As for Stokes's man-of-the-match effort, Root said it "doesn't surprise me".

"He seems to want to keep getting better and better and we're seeing those results out on the field."

Stokes played down his contribution, telling the BBC: "Everyone has put their hands up and contributed to a great win."

England's plans for this match were thrown into disarray when fast bowler Jofra Archer had to be omitted for breaching the bio-secure rules governing a series that marks international cricket's return from the coronavirus lockdown.

But such was England's dominance they still won despite the whole of Saturday's third day being washed out.

Recalled paceman Broad, angry at being rested from the series opener, struck just five balls into the West Indies second innings Monday when he had John Campbell caught behind.

Broad finished with 3-42 having rocked the West Indies in their first innings with a burst of three wickets in 14 balls.

"I'm a little disappointed with the way we batted," said West Indies captain Jason Holder.

Chris Woakes then had West Indies dangerman Kraigg Brathwaite lbw and Broad clipped the top of Shai Hope's off stump.

Brooks' fine innings ended when he was plumb lbw to left-arm quick Sam Curran.

There was a worrying moment for England when Stokes could not complete his 15th over but afterwards he said: "There's absolutely nothing to worry about."

England spinner Dom Bess got in on the act at the finish.

Two balls after Holder drove him for six, Bess bowled the all-rounder between bat and pad with a classic off-break.

Bess ended the match when Kemar Roach was brilliantly caught by Ollie Pope at short leg.

Earlier, Stokes, promoted to open in a quest for quick runs, took England to 129-3 declared in their second innings.

Having batted cautiously before upping the tempo in his first-innings century, Stokes produced another brilliantly judged batting display as England scored 92 runs in 11 overs on Monday.

Stokes should have been out for 29 when he slogged Shannon Gabriel to deep extra cover only for Campbell to drop a routine catch.

Stokes, England's captain in Root's absence for the first Test, went to fifty with a six off Gabriel that cleared the towering Holder at long-off.

The series finale, also at Old Trafford, starts on Friday, with Holder insisting: "It's all to play for.

"This is the perfect return to cricket."

World cricket witnessed something unique in Cricket South Africa’s brainchild - 3TC Solidarity Cup - at SuperSport Park in Centurion on July 18. While 24 South African players participated in the one-off match involving three teams, Indian commentators turned their respective houses into commentary box as the likes of Deep Dasgupta (Kolkata), Sanjay Manjrekar (Mumbai), Irfan Pathan (Baroda) and Jatin Sapru (Delhi)&nbsp;gripped the Indian cricket fans with their take on the match in Hindi.

Not only these four but the entire production team of Star Sports joined in from different cities of India. Be it Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Mysuru, the entire team assembled to bring a unique format of cricket to brighten up the lives of cricket fans.&nbsp;

At the end, there were plaudits for each and every one who made the 3TC event possible. Both Hindi and English commentary were made available for viewers in what was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for cricket lovers.&nbsp;

Another major development in the world of cricket comes in the postponement of T20 World Cup. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/planning-for-full-fledged-ipl-2020-most-likely-in-the-uae-brijesh-patel-314905">IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel has almost confirmed that IPL 2020&nbsp;will be heading to the UAE</a>. As more and more news surrounding <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl?page=1">IPL 2020</a> continues to flow, a big question remains whether the tournament will also follow the footsteps of the 3TC in relation to virtual commentary.

The event in South Africa was one-off but IPL will be of around 60 matches. Is it even possible to pull off something of a mountainous scale as IPL when it comes to commentating from home? Deep Dasgupta is of the view that it will definitely be challenging but not impossible but questions if 160 players can travel to the UAE then how will the other 15-20 commentators make a difference.&nbsp;

“Virtual commentary during IPL might not be the first option but I guess it is an option somewhere in the pecking order. Technologically, it will be massive. Yes, there has to be some improvement if IPL thinks about virtual commentary. With practice, things will get better. If IPL happens in the UAE, then around 160 players will be travelling. So how can another 15-20 commentators affect the planning?,” Dasgupta explained.&nbsp;

Production scale is immense in the IPL. It can’t be even compared to other T20 tournaments in the world in terms of quality analysis, entertainment and depth. In a nutshell, IPL is blockbuster. But if the organisers go with the decision of sticking to virtual commentary, will it make a difference? In terms of quality, yes there will be a definite hit. While it is still an early stage, the BCCI might not take the risk of going ahead with virtual commentary as they would look to make the viewing experience as better as possible for fans watching on their TV sets or over the internet. &nbsp;

Is virtual commentary in IPL 2020 possible? Deep Dasgupta explains

Former speed merchant Brett Lee reckons Australia's pace triumvirate would hold the key during the year-end home Test series against India and is keen to figure out how much the kookaburra ball swings without saliva Down Under.

Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood forms a fine pace attack for Australia.

With the ban on saliva due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the world's fastest bowlers wants the custodians of the game to come up with an "artificial substance" to maintain the balance between bat and ball.

"Playing at home obviously gives you that advantage, but that said I know that India will pack a full strength squad to tour Australia. I still believe if Australia is to win our bowlers hold the key," Lee told PTI in an exclusive interview.

The kookaburra seam is not as pronounced as Dukes or SG Tests balls and the flattening of seam coupled with ban on saliva will make it harder for bowlers of both teams.

"It will definitely change the way the game is played so we don't want to make it even harder for bowlers even more than it is currently is," said the 43-year-old Lee.

India's pace attack, which has been phenomenal in the past three years, has the capability of "knocking over any top order" in world cricket but it will again boil down to how much the ball swings.

"India have got some extremely good pace bowlers that are capable of knocking over any top order. Once again I think it comes down to how the ball will swing or not swing in different conditions (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney)."

And that is precisely the reason why Lee won't mind if an artificial substance is allowed even though his answer to whether ball tampering should be legalised was an emphatic no.

"Essentially you do need saliva to keep the new ball shiny and also the old ball to reverse swing. Usually (fast bowlers) use less saliva on a new ball compared to the old one.

"Maybe they need to come up with some artificial substance that they can use," the holder of 310 Test wickets asserted.

The best part about Australian cricket teams have been their iconic captains who have set benchmarks, said Lee.

"Yes Australia have had some wonderful leaders which involves set the tone for the generations to follow. I was very lucky to play under two of my favourites in Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting," said Lee, referring to the likes of Ian Chappell, Allan Border and Mark Taylor who preceded them.

Does he feel that Tim Paine can earn the same kind of respect consistently in a change room that has powerhouse performers like Steve Smith and David Warner.

"I think Tim Paine has done a tremendous job and should be complimented for the way that he has led the side. Keeping in mind he's had a few dramas to deal with, he's still the right man for the job," Lee said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, all cricket boards are going through financial stress and Cricket Australia is no different.

The speedster hoped that some normalcy will return in future.

"As any person in the workforce any time there is a pay cut that it definitely will affect them. Let's hope we get back to some form of normality as soon as possible."

Lee had watched the first Test between England and West Indies in Southampton and was very impressed with Caribbean skipper Jason Holder's performance in the first innings.

"There has been some wonderful performances by bowlers of both teams. In particular the skipper from the West Indies. Just goes to show that line length is so important."

Former speed merchant Brett Lee reckons Australia's pace triumvirate would hold the key during the year-end home Test series against India and is keen to figure out how much the kookaburra ball swings without saliva Down Under.

Once again I think it comes down to how the ball will swing or not swing in different conditions (Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney)." And that is precisely the reason why Lee won't mind if an artificial substance is allowed even though his answer to whether ball tampering should be legalised was an emphatic no. "Essentially you do need saliva to keep the new ball shiny and also the old ball to reverse swing. Usually (fast bowlers) use less saliva on a new ball compared to the old one. Bowlers hold key against India but Lee wonders how much will saliva-less kookaburra swing

Fast bowler Jofra Archer rejoined England for the deciding cricket Test against the West Indies after a second negative test for the coronavirus on Tuesday.

Archer was removed from the squad last week on the eve of the second test after he breached the bio-secure rules with an unauthorized trip to his home in Hove.

He was placed in five days of isolation at Old Trafford's on-site hotel, allowed out only for carefully controlled solitary fitness work, and later fined about 15,000 pounds (USD 19,000) at a disciplinary hearing.

Having come into contact with an unnamed individual during his detour between Southampton and Manchester, Archer needed to test negative twice before being allowed to return to the playing group.

His availability gives England a full set of six seamers to choose from for the series decider starting on Friday in Manchester. Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran contributed to the 113-run win on Monday, while James Anderson, Mark Wood and Archer are fully rested after playing in Southampton.

Captain Joe Root insisted Archer's lapse in judgement would not be held against him when it came to selection.

"It was disappointing from our side of things but as far as I'm concerned he's been through a disciplinary meeting, he's very aware of the consequences of his actions and very remorseful," Root said.

"As a side and mates we've been there for him. He's aware he made a massive error but once the disciplinary has gone through it's time for us to look at him being available."

ENG vs WI: Archer rejoins England for 3rd Test after 2nd negative check

Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis on Tuesday said he has moved on from the hurt caused by Muhammad Amir's Test retirement last year and considers the pacer a crucial part of the national team's plans going forward.

Having initially pulled out due to the birth of his second child, Amir made himself available for next month's T20 series against England on Monday. Waqar welcomed him back and touched upon the anger he felt at Amir's Test retirement ahead of a tour of Australia last year.

"Amir remains part of our plans for the future as he is experienced. We want to utilise him if he is up to the mark, if he can win matches for Pakistan. Next year we have the World Cup," Waqar said in an online media interaction.

"It hurt at that time when he decided to retire from Test cricket but we have to move on and do what is best for the country," he added.

Waqar defended the decision to call Amir to join the squad in England to replace Haris Rauf.

"We called Amir because he is part of our white ball cricket plans. And if we felt this was the ideal opportunity to assess all our bowlers going forward. It is not about this series but also about future commitments including the World Cups coming up," Waqar said in an online media interaction.

"We want to see how he is bowling as we want to get a fair idea of which bowlers to take forward and assess them all," he added.

Pakistan will take on England in a Test and T20 series next month.

Waqar admitted that he and head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq were upset when Amir announced his sudden retirement from Test cricket last year as both felt he was required on the tour to Australia.

"We were not happy but bringing him back I think is a positive move. The young bowlers will learn from him. We are clear in our mind no bowler is indispensable for the team.

"But I think his presence will help in the competition among the pace bowlers in the training camp in England," he added.

Waqar said Pakistan is faced with a happy problem of plenty in fast bowling right now.

"I can tell you whenever there is healthy competition among bowlers to do well in any team it is a blessing in disguise for that team. I see that same culture developing in the Pakistan team now," he said.

"It is a blessing for us that we have so many pace bowlers to pick from. But in the end we will give priority to those who are performing well," he added.

Waqar also rejected suggestions that it was difficult for a fast bowler to compete in all formats given the workload.

"I just look at this way if a bowler is fit, strong and loves taking wickets. He can play all the time. But I guess this is an individual decision," he said.
