Former England women's captain Clare Connor is to become the first female president of Marylebone Cricket Club in its 233-year history.

Current incumbent Kumar Sangakkara, the first non-British MCC president, nominated Connor via video link from his native Sri Lanka during an annual general meeting on Wednesday.

Connor, now the England and Wales Cricket Board's head of women's cricket, is set to take up her new post on October 1, 2021, subject to the membership's approval.

Presidents of MCC usually remain in post for one year but Sangakkara's term is set to be extended by a further 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was not until 1998 that MCC, which owns Lord's Cricket Ground, voted to allow women to become members.&nbsp;

Prior to that, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was one of the few women allowed in the Lord's pavilion.

"I am deeply honoured to be named the next president of MCC," said Connor in a statement.

"Cricket has enriched my life so deeply already, and now it hands me this wonderful privilege.

"We often need to look back to see how far we've come. I made my first visit to Lord's as a starry-eyed, cricket-obsessed nine-year-old girl at a time when women were not welcome in the Long Room (of the pavilion).

<h2>- 'Times have changed' -</h2>

The 43-year-old Connor, now the chair of the International Cricket Council's women's cricket committee, added: "Times have changed. Now I find myself entrusted with this remarkable opportunity –- the opportunity to play a part in helping MCC, cricket's most influential club, to thrive and grow in an even more modern and inclusive future.

"MCC does wonderful work for communities in the UK and overseas. It stages the most uplifting events. It brings people together.

"And as we take small steps to emerge from this uncertain and difficult time, we are going to need the power of sport and strong sporting organisations like MCC more than ever."

Meanwhile Sangakkara said he was "thrilled" by Connor's latest cricket appointment, the Sri Lanka great adding: "The club has a significant role to play in cricket's global appeal and with her influence, I am sure she will make a considerable contribution to MCC."

Left-arm spinner Connor made her England debut aged 19 in 1995 and went on to captain her country in 2000 before retiring six years later.

Although MCC no longer runs English cricket, it has worldwide responsibility for the sport's rules.

Jofra Archer will join England's training camp at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday after his latest test for the coronavirus returned a negative result.

Fast bowler Archer was initially delayed from joining up with 29 other England cricketers in Southampton after he reported a member of his household feeling unwell on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Sussex paceman had shown no symptoms and was among a wholly negative batch of 702 test results announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board this week.

Nevertheless, the Barbados-born quick was required to undergo an additional test on Wednesday.

But an ECB statement issued Thursday said: "Jofra Archer has tested negative for COVID-19. He will join the England camp at Ageas Bowl later today and will be free to start training tomorrow (Friday) with the rest of the group."

England are assembling at the Ageas Bowl ahead of a three-Test series against the West Indies that is set to start at Hampshire's headquarters on July 8 -- the first major international cricket match since lockdown.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has asked the ICC to get written assurances from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that the team would face no issues while getting visas to play in the T20 World Cup 2021 and ICC World Cup 2023 scheduled to be hosted by India.&nbsp;

PCB CEO Wasim Khan said that the board has asked the ICC for visa assurance while also hinting that the T20 World Cup 2020 is likely to be postponed. Khan further said that the tournament could be postponed to 2022 if the showpiece event gets deferred.

“We are also looking at the fact that the ICC World Cups are to be hosted in India in 2021 and 2023 and we have already asked the ICC to give us written assurances from BCCI that we will not face any problems getting visas and clearance to play in India,” PCB CEO Wasim Khan said in an interview on the Youtube Cricket Baaz Channel.

“The big question now is when the World T20 is held in 2021 will it be hosted by Australia or India as India has the hosting rights for the already scheduled World T20 Cup in 2021.

“The way things are, the gap available in 2022 will be used to accommodate the 2020 World T20 if it is not held this year.”&nbsp;

Khan said that in last few years, many Pakistan sports teams have been denied clearance by the Indian government to play in India. “That is why we have asked for the advance assurances. But eventually it is an ICC event and it is their responsibility to ensure we as a full member and signatory of the participants’ agreement go and play in these ICC events.”&nbsp;

PCB seeks written assurance from BCCI on player visas for two World Cups in India

After accusing that the ICC 2011 World Cup final was “sold” by “certain parties”, former Sri Lanka sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage has now called his claim a “suspicion” that he wants to be investigated thoroughly, nine years after MS Dhoni-led Team India lifted the coveted trophy in Mumbai.

The Sri Lankan government has ordered an enquiry for the claims by Aluthgamage with a special investigation unit recording Aluthgamage’s statement on Wednesday. Apparently, he told the investigation team that he was only suspicious of fixing.

"I want my suspicion investigated," Aluthgamage told reporters.

"I gave to the Police, a copy of the complaint I lodged with the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 30 October 2011 regarding the said allegation as then Sports Minister," he said.

Aluthgamage has alleged that Sri Lanka “sold” the game to India and his claims were ridiculed by former Lankan captains Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene as the duo demanded evidence from him.

"Today I am telling you that we sold the 2011 world cup, I said this when I was the sports minister," Aluthgamage, who was the sports minister at the time, had stated.

After claiming Sri Lanka 'sold' 2011 WC final to India, Lankan minister says it's his 'suspicion'

"First love cannot be forgotten," is how one member of Kapil Dev's team describes India's debut cricket World Cup win in 1983 -- a victory that aroused passions so fierce they would change the game forever.

When 'Kapil Devils' stunned the West Indies at Lord's, the traditional home of cricket, it triggered an obsession with the sport in India and created its biggest market -- ultimately making India's board the richest and most powerful in the world.

India was previously a hockey-loving nation, owing to their five Olympic gold medals between 1948 and 1980. But on June 25, 1983, India's cricketers became world-beaters.

Nobody saw the victory coming, after India came into the one-day tournament with just one win -- against East Africa -- in the previous two editions.

"We never, ever imagined we would reach the quarter-final or the knockout stage," Syed Kirmani, the team's flamboyant wicketkeeper-batsman, told AFP.

"A few of my colleagues in that team had expressed themselves that 'we are going to have fun, enjoy ourselves and that's it'.

"But we laid a very strong foundation by winning the Cup. It is like the first love cannot be forgotten. Thirty-seven years have gone, people still remember our victory."

He added: "The younger generation are also keen to know when we won the first World Cup and who were the players. Oh God, it is a fantastic, nostalgic feeling."

<h2>- Watershed moment -</h2>

India's run to the title is soon to get the Bollywood treatment, with popular actor Ranveer Singh playing Dev.

MS Dhoni later led India to the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup title in 2007 and their second ODI world trophy in 2011, but the victory in England will always remain a watershed moment.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is now the wealthiest association in the game and players like Sunil Gavaskar, part of the 1983 team, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have been instrumental in taking Indian cricket to greater heights.

"The board started getting commercial benefits only after the World Cup win and for us it was a game-changer," Sunil Valson, who was part of the 14-member squad, told AFP.

"Understand nowadays whenever the Indian team goes for a World Cup the expectations are so high on them. But in '83 nobody expected it, but the way we played was just amazing.

"'83 will be '83, that changed the passion, the trend. Money came into the sport much later, but certainly it was a great victory that came against any expectations."

<h2>- 'One man's genius' -</h2>

India were reeling at 17 for five in a crucial group match against Zimbabwe when Dev's unbeaten 175 won the game and proved to be the turning point for their campaign.

Kapil's Devils outplayed hosts England in the semi-finals and then defended a modest total of 183 in the title clash.

Roger Binny, who sent back West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd for eight in the final, said Dev's leadership and India's all-rounders were key to the team's success.

"I think it has got be the all-rounders. If you see the scores in all the matches, contributions came from the latter half of the team," Binny told AFP.

"Definitely one strong point was (Dev's) captaincy. Also when we beat the West Indies in the first game in Manchester, that lifted the spirit of the guys."

Veteran journalist Ayaz Memon, one of the half-a-dozen Indian journalists that travelled to the World Cup's third edition, said optimism was non-existent at the start.&nbsp;

"Expectations were zero when we went, because India's past record in the World Cups had been dismal," Memon told AFP.

"I did not even see the first match, India v West Indies, because I thought they would lose easily, but a lot of things conspired to make it India's tournament.

"I was witness to Kapil Dev's innings at Tunbridge Wells (against Zimbabwe). BBC was on one-day strike, so there was no radio or TV commentary.&nbsp;One man's genius gave India the direction to go for glory. It lifted up the self-belief in the team."&nbsp;

He added: "In 1983, what India did was turn the game upside completely on its head in the power matrix. Suddenly you found India were champions, therefore their participation in the sport became greater and bigger."

Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been delayed from joining the England squad after he underwent a precautionary test for COVID-19 when a member of his household felt unwell last weekend, the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

Archer was supposed to link up with the England team, who are going into isolation head of their test series against West Indies, in Southampton on Tuesday.

“Archer, and members of his household, have tested negative for COVID-19,” the ECB said. “He will have a second test tomorrow (Wednesday), and if he tests negative, he will join up with the training group on Thursday.”

The first test starts in Southampton on July 8 and Archer said on Monday that he was fit and ready for the three-match series after battling an elbow injury.

Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, for the first time, opened up regarding approaches from bookies that led to his suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) last year. Shakib said that he took approaches casually while revealing the anti-corruption officer knew everything about the revelations.

Shakib further said he got just a one-year ban as he helped in the investigation while adding he could have banned for five or 10 years if he hadn’t helped them.

"I took the approaches too casually. When I met the anti-corruption guy and told them and they knew everything," Shakib was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

"Gave them all the evidence and they knew everything that happened... To be honest, that's the only reason I was banned for a year, otherwise, I'd have been banned for five or 10 years."

Shakib was suspended for failing to report corrupt approaches as the all-rounder said he regrets the “silly mistakes”. He said he shouldn’t have made this decision to not report the approaches.&nbsp;

"But I think that was a silly mistake I made. Because with my experience and the number of international matches I've played and the amount of ICC's anti-corruption code of conduct classes I took, I shouldn't have made that decision (to not report), to be honest," Shakib said.

"I regret that. And I think no one should take such messages or calls (from bookies) lightly or leave it away... We must inform the ICC ACSU guy to be on the safe side and that's the lesson I learned, and I think I learned a big lesson."

Meanwhile, Shakib Al Hasan's ban ends on October 29 this year.

Bangladesh have formally called off their Test series in Sri Lanka because of the coronavirus pandemic, officials in Colombo said Wednesday.

The Bangladesh team was due to play three Tests in late July, but the tour was in doubt because of the worrying spread of COVID-19 across South Asia.

The Sri Lankan cricket board said Bangladesh had pulled out due to "the lack of preparation for its players, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic".

Former Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza -- who remains in the Test squad -- and left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam tested positive for the virus Saturday.

This is the second international engagement to be taken off Sri Lanka's cricket calendar this month.

India pulled out of a&nbsp;limited-overs series scheduled for late June.

The Sri Lankan cricket team started its second residential training camp in Kandy on Monday to prepare for the Twenty20 world cup in Australia in September.

The island nation has reported 11 virus deaths and some 1,998 infections. It has eased lockdown measures and resumed economic activity.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, has confirmed over 122,660 infections and more than 1,500 deaths from the coronavirus so far. The country restarted economic activities after lifting a months-long virus lockdown at the end of May even as cases continued to rise.

The much-talked-about Asia Cup 2020 will go ahead as per the schedule later in the year in either Sri Lanka or the UAE, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO Wasim Khan said on Wednesday. Speculations are rife that the event could be scrapped to make a window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 but Khan dismissed the rumours as he said Asia Cup will be held when Pakistan return from England on September 2.

Deliberation on the nomination process for its next chairman will top the agenda when the International Cricket Council's all-powerful Board converges via video-conference on Thursday.

With the ICC already making it clear that a final decision on the fate of this year's T20 World Cup will be taken next month, the primary agenda of discussion will be the nomination process for the chairman's election. The post is currently held by India's Shashank Manohar.

"I am still not sure whether the date of election (or selection) will be announced tomorrow or not. Obviously the primary agenda is discussion on the nomination process for Shashank Manohar's replacement," an ICC board member, privy to the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Obviously, since the members will meet, they will update (the board) about the situation in their respective countries. However, no concrete announcement is expected," the source added.

Also, the board could be briefed on the investigations being carried on the leaks of classified e-mails, a member said.

For being in the running for the chairman's post, a member is required to have attended a minimum of two board meetings and also needs to be nominated by a current or past director (board member) of the representative country.

An ICC Board comprises chairman, 12 Test playing nations, three associate members (Malaysia, Scotland and Singapore as per this turn), independent female director (Indra Nooyi) and chief executive Manu Sawhney.
The Chief Executive doesn't have a vote in case of election.

As of now, former ECB chairman Colin Graves is the front-runner to replace Shashank Manohar as the chairman of the world body but one can't rule out BCCI president Sourav Ganguly either.

Neither Ganguly nor BCCI have outrightly negated the possibility of his candidature.

But a lot would depend on whether the Supreme Court of India accepts the Interim Application of the BCCI which pleads that the mandatory cooling off period after six years in office be waived off for Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani has already ruled himself out of contention during a media interaction earlier in the week where he said that his priority is cricket in his country.

It is learnt that it won't be a bad idea for Ganguly to throw his hat in the ring in case the cooling off period is not waived off.

"We still don't know whether Sourav Ganguly has any political ambitions or not. If he has, he can always be the ICC chairman for a year and then be a BJP chief ministerial candidate for the state assembly elections in West Bengal in 2021," a BCCI insider said.

However, as of now Ganguly is unlikely to contest if he is not a unanimous choice for the post.

ICC Board Meet: Nomination process for next chairman is primary agenda

Australia's David Warner has warned against sledging Virat Kohli when India tour Australia this year, saying "trying to poke the bear" will only make the star batsman play better.

As cricket slowly gets back into action after coronavirus suspensions, India are slated to tour Australia for four Test matches in December-January in what is set to be a highlight of the year.

Warner, a lynchpin of Australia's batting attack, said he is looking forward to the confrontation but that he will steer clear of taunting India's captain.

"I thrive on the crowd, I thrive on people sort of going at me in the field. And getting into that battle," Warner told India Today television.

"I think Virat is quite similar, if you go a little bit at Virat he comes out harder with the bat and he plays amazing. We have seen that time and time again.

"There is no point in actually trying to poke the bear because at the end of the day if you do that it just fires up the person a bit more."

Last year India claimed their first Test series win in Australia after 71 years of trying.

Warner, who along with Steve Smith missed the series while they served a ball-tampering ban, said Australia are much better prepared this time.

"It's a much-anticipated return to Australia for India. I am excited, one to be selected and to be a part of that. Last time we were not bad but were beaten by a good team and their bowling was relentless," said Warner.

"Now, India has got the best batting line-up and our bowlers will like to target them."

Warner said he's also keen to play the lucrative Indian Premier League if the International Cricket Council postpones the T20 World Cup, scheduled to start October 18 in Australia.

The fate of the T20 showpiece will be decided next month and if the World Cup is sidelined, the delayed IPL could take its place. Cricket Australia has admitted the World Cup looks "unrealistic" this year as the pandemic lingers.

Warner, who is captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, said quarantine rules for foreigners entering Australia was one of many problems for the World Cup.

"The challenges around getting every single nation that participates in the World Cup into Australia, given the fact that we have the quarantine for 14 days... we have to obviously abide by those rules and obviously we await the decision from the ICC," Warner said.

He added: "I am definitely sure and positive that we (Australian players) will be able to come and play in the IPL if that replaces the World Cup schedule."

At the moment, they have been advised to go into self-isolation so that they not only recover quickly but also prevent their other family members from being infected.

“The tour to England is very much on track and the side will depart as per schedule on 28 June. Fortunately, all the first-choice red-ball squad, barring Mohammad Rizwan, are negative, which means they can start training and practicing immediately &nbsp;after they have been tested and given the all clear when they arrive in England

“In the meantime, Misbah-ul-Haq is reviewing the training schedule in England and is firming up plans for reserve players to be tested as a backup.”

Australia's cricketers must forge a leaner, tighter Test team to cope with the coronavirus-related job losses forced on the sport, captain Tim Paine said Tuesday.

Paine played down reports of tensions between the players and Cricket Australia but said the game's elite had to come to terms with cutbacks related to the pandemic.

That included losing long-time batting assistant Graeme Hick and other backroom staff when CA axed 40 jobs last week in a bid to save Aus$40 million (US$27.6 million).

With a blockbuster Test series against India set to go ahead during the home summer, Paine said the Australians needed to react fast if they are to reinforce their world number one status.

"Things are going to change, players and teams are going to have to adapt," he told reporters during a video press conference.

"We're seeing an opportunity for the team that can adapt first to these changes is going to get off to a good start in the next Test series and that's really important to us.

"We've certainly lost some good people throughout this period but the flip side of that is that it's a great opportunity to adapt quicker than anyone else, to help each other improve."

He said that involved players "doing that little bit extra" and pulling together.

"Players are going to have to be aligned with each other and find ways to get things done without the huge numbers of support staff that we've been lucky to have over the last number of years," he said.

Paine also had warm words for former Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts, who was shown the door last week amid widespread dissatisfaction over his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

"The support he gave me behind the scenes was brilliant," Paine said, adding that he had full confidence in the Cricket Australia board.

While eagerly anticipating the India series, Paine was also hopeful a one-off Test with minnows Afghanistan would still go ahead.

"Everyone's thoroughly looking forward to the challenge that India's going to bring," he said.

"Certainly Afghanistan will bring a different sort of challenge as well with their mystery spin, so fingers crossed for that."

Former India opener and a stalwart in the domestic circuit, Wasim Jaffer has been appointed head coach of Uttarakhand cricket team for the 2020-21 domestic season. Jaffer signed a one-year deal with the Uttarakhand side in what will be his first stint as the head coach of a team.&nbsp;

<h2>An exciting and challenging opportunity for me: Wasim Jaffer</h2>

“It is an exciting and challenging opportunity for me, something very new. Even though I have done coaching in some capacity be it Bangladesh or somewhere else, but to be a head coach of a team it will bring fresh challenges for me,” Jaffer told WION’s Subhayan Chakraborty.&nbsp;

Jaffer, who is the highest run-getter in the history of Ranji Trophy, had announced his retirement in March 2020 as he drew curtains on a career spanning over two decades.&nbsp;

Uttarakhand has a talented bunch of players spearheaded by Tanmay Srivastava and Unmukt Chand and Jaffer’s role will not only be to put strong results in the books but also to guide players with his immense experience in international and domestic cricket.

“Both the things are important, it is part and parcel of a coach’s job. I have heard many good things about Uttarakhand and they have a talented bunch of players. In 2018-19 season, they played the quarter-finals against us (Vidarbha), so I know a bit about them. The facilities are really good there, something which I really look forward to.

In my opinion, the first thing a team needs for improvement is the structure. The structure has to be good, look at how Vidarbha has utilized the academy and indoor facilities. Similarly, Uttarakhand has a good structure to work with. I want to improve the players, the team and I am looking forward to passing on my experience and knowledge to make them a better unit,” Jaffer explained.&nbsp;

Coaching requirements have changed with cricket evolving with each passing day. Now, T20 cricket is given as much importance as Test cricket was given back in the day, and with that comes immense responsibility for a coach. And Jaffer, who knows the modern cricket thoroughly, is eager to leave his mark in his first stint as coach.&nbsp;

<h2>"You need to be prepared for all three formats" - Wasim Jaffer</h2>

“It all depends, nowadays you need to be prepared for all three formats. Different formats demand&nbsp;different skill-set and temperament. I believe, as a player, you need to play all three formats and as a coach, my role would be to provide them with inputs to play all three formats of the game. They need to be prepared for all three formats. Batsman needs to be ready for four-day cricket, one-dayers and T20 and this is the same for the bowlers as they need to vary their variations according to the demand of the game. All three formats demand different challenges and my job will be to give them the best possible platform for it. The most important thing is that our process needs to be on point, preparation needs to be good and the results will follow,” Jaffer signed off.&nbsp;

Legendary first-class spinner Rajinder Goel died on Sunday owing to age-related illnesses. He was 77 and is survived by his wife and son Nitin Goel, who has also played first-class cricket and is a domestic match-referee.

"It is a huge loss for the game of cricket and personally for me. He was one of the best, if not the best left-arm spinner that this country has ever seen. His contribution to the game post retirement was massive," former BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra said, expressing his grief.

The left-arm spinner, who was unlucky to have played in the era of Bishan Singh Bedi, had 750 first-class wickets from 157 games, representing Haryana and North Zone in domestic cricket.

It was Bedi who presented him the BCCI's CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

Pakistan's Haider Ali, Haris Rauf and Shadab Khan tested COVID-19 positive ahead of England tour

Cricket South Africa (CSA) revealed on Monday that seven people within the organisation had tested positive for coronavirus, raising questions over the sport's potential return to action in the country.

The acting chief executive of South African cricket's governing body, Jacques Faul, said more than 100 tests had been conducted within the organisation, and theu had included players and support staff.&nbsp;

"The number of seven is actually quite low," said Faul, who added CSA's medical and ethical protocol prevented him from revealing the identity of those who had tested positive.

The announced cases of COVID-19 are likely to further delay the resumption of the sport in the country.&nbsp;

A three-team event was scheduled for this coming Saturday involving 24 leading players. It was due to be South Africa's first televised sporting event since the country went into lockdown in March.

It was announced last Saturday the competition had been postponed because it had not yet been approved by the government.&nbsp;

Faul said on Monday CSA had been "a little ambitious" in announcing the date, especially as Centurion, where the match was due to be played, is considered a virus "hot spot".

Faul said no new date had yet been decided and it was possible the venue would be changed.

The news compounds a bad weekend for South African cricket after it emerged that CSA had been criticised by sports minister Nathi Mthethwa during a parliamentary briefing over the appointment of three white men –- Faul, director of cricket Graeme Smith and national team head coach Mark Boucher –- to key positions.

According to local media reports, Mthethwa said he felt "insulted" when CSA president Chris Nenzani told him the appointments had been made on merit.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to organise a six-week camp for its elite cricketers somewhere in July and speculations have started whether Mahendra Singh Dhoni will make the cut or not. The BCCI is looking for a safe time and venue for the camp after the third week of July and in case if it is not possible then players will join their respective IPL camps later in the year.

While Dhoni is not in the central contracts list, a few players from outside the pool is expected to feature in the camp. Former chief selector MSK Prasad is of the view that Dhoni should feature in the camp if the preparation is for the T20 World Cup, otherwise players like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are there for the bilaterals.&nbsp;

"I don't know whether T20 World Cup is happening or not. If it is happening and you are just looking at the camp as a pre-cursor to the tournament, then MS should definitely be there. If it's a case of bilaterals, then you already have KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson," Prasad told PTI.

Former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra said that if Dhoni wants to be there in the camp then he should be there, no questions asked.

"If I was a national selector, MS Dhoni will be in my team but the bigger question is that whether he wants to play or not. It's what Dhoni wants at the end of the day," Nehra said.

Whereas Harbhajan Singh has said that he wants to see youngsters take part in the camp while mentioning the likes of Ravi Bishnoi, Yashasvi Jaiswal and in-form Suryakumar Yadav.

"I would like to see Suryakumar Yadav, the young U-19 leg-spinner (Ravi Bishnoi) and Yashasvi Jaiswal in that camp.

They should get a chance to interact with the senior players. No one deserves it more than Surya, who should be in that T20 team," Harbhajan said.

Deep Dasgupta, on the other hand, feels that Dhoni cannot be ruled out of the World Cup even if he is not there in the camp while adding everything depends on how the former Indian captain performs in the IPL.

"I mean if Dhoni is a part of that camp, it will be six weeks with the next batch of keepers who can pick his brains. Yes, if he is not a part of that camp, I would still not rule him out if he has a good IPL. Say he bats at No 4 for CSK and gets 500 runs, can you ignore him then?" questioned Dasgupta.

A senior official privy to selection matter is of the view that he would be very surprised if Dhoni is picked for the upcoming camp.

"He hasn't played for one year. You haven't seen in what shape he is right now. He is not in central contracts and he wasn't even picked for the T20s against West Indies last year. Still if he is called for a camp, it will be surprising," the official said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is open to the idea of reviewing sponsorship police for the next cycle but has no plans to end the current contract with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">IPL</a> title sponsor Vivo. As per board treasurer Arun Dhumal, the money coming in from the Chinese company is helping India’s cause.&nbsp;

Following the border clash between India and China at Galwan&nbsp;Valley earlier this week, sentiments are running high with anti-China calls all around the country. This is the first clash at the India-China border in more than four decades that has left at least 20 Indian soldiers dead. Since then, calls to boycott Chinese products have been echoing in India.&nbsp;

However, Dhumal is of the view that Chinese companies sponsoring an Indian event like the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">IPL</a> only serve the country’s purpose. The BCCI currently gets Rs 440 crore annually from Vivo with the five-year deal ending in the year 2020.&nbsp;

<h2>Chinese sponsorship helping India: Arun Dhumal</h2>

"When you talk emotionally, you tend to leave the rationale behind. We have to understand the difference between supporting a Chinese company for a Chinese cause or taking help from Chinese company to support India's cause," Dhumal told PTI.

"When we are allowing Chinese companies to sell their products in India, whatever money they are taking from Indian consumer, they are paying part of it to the BCCI (as brand promotion) and the board is paying 42 per cent tax on that money to the Indian government. So, that is supporting India's cause and not China's," he argued.

Oppo was sponsoring the Indian cricket team until September 2019 when Bengaluru-based Byju’s start-up replaced the Chinese smartphone brand.

Dhumal further said that he is all in for reducing dependence on Chinese products but countered that if Chinese companies are allowed to do business in India, there is no lost cause in them sponsoring Indian brand like the IPL.&nbsp;

"If they are not supporting the IPL, they are likely to take that money back to China. If that money is retained here, we should be happy about it. We are supporting our government with that money (by paying taxes on it)."

"If I am giving a contract to a Chinese company to build a cricket stadium, then I am helping the Chinese economy. GCA built the world's largest cricket stadium at Motera and that contract was given to an Indian company (L&amp;T)," he said.

"Cricketing infrastructure worth thousands of crores were created across country and none of the contracts was awarded to a Chinese company."

Dhumal went on to say the BCCI is spoilt for choice when it comes to attracting sponsors, whether Indian or Chinese or from any other nation. Dhumal explained that the BCCI is not giving money to the Chinese but is attracting on the contrary.

"If that Chinese money is coming to support Indian cricket, we should be okay with it. I am all for banning Chinese products as an individual, we are there to support our government but by getting sponsorship from Chinese company, we are helping India's cause."

"We can get sponsorship money from non-Chinese companies also including Indian firms. We can support our players any way but the idea is when they are allowed to sell their products here, it is better that part of money comes back to the Indian economy."

"The BCCI is not giving money to the Chinese, it is attracting on the contrary. We should make decision based on rationale rather than emotion," he added.

As per board treasurer Arun Dhumal, the money coming in from the Chinese company is helping India’s cause. Following the border clash between India and China at Galwan Valley earlier this week, sentiments are running high with anti-China calls all around the country. This is the first clash at the India-China border in more than four decades that has left at least 20 Indian soldiers dead. Since then, calls to boycott Chinese products have been echoing in India. However, Dhumal is of the view that Chinese companies sponsoring an Indian event like the IPL only serve the country’s purpose. The BCCI currently gets Rs 440 crore annually from Vivo with the five-year deal ending in the year 2020. ALSO READ: Indian pace attack 'best' in cricket history: Mohammed Shami Chinese sponsorship helping India: Arun Dhumal "When you talk emotionally, you tend to leave the rationale behind. Dhumal further said that he is all in for reducing dependence on Chinese products but countered that if Chinese companies are allowed to do business in India, there is no lost cause in them sponsoring Indian brand like the IPL. ALSO READ: England's Nick Compton opens up about battling depression for 'last 5-6 years' "If they are not supporting the IPL, they are likely to take that money back to China. If that money is retained here, we should be happy about it. We are supporting our government with that money (by paying taxes on it)." "If I am giving a contract to a Chinese company to build a cricket stadium, then I am helping the Chinese economy. GCA built the world's largest cricket stadium at Motera and that contract was given to an Indian company (L&T)," he said. "Cricketing infrastructure worth thousands of crores were created across country and none of the contracts was awarded to a Chinese company." Dhumal went on to say the BCCI is spoilt for choice when it comes to attracting sponsors, whether Indian or Chinese or from any other nation. Dhumal explained that the BCCI is not giving money to the Chinese but is attracting on the contrary. "If that Chinese money is coming to support Indian cricket, we should be okay with it. I am all for banning Chinese products as an individual, we are there to support our government but by getting sponsorship from Chinese company, we are helping India's cause." "We can get sponsorship money from non-Chinese companies also including Indian firms. We can support our players any way but the idea is when they are allowed to sell their products here, it is better that part of money comes back to the Indian economy." "The BCCI is not giving money to the Chinese, it is attracting on the contrary. We should make decision based on rationale rather than emotion," he added.

India’s premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami has claimed that Team India may have the best pace attack in the history of Test cricket brushing aside the fearsome West Indies pacers of the 1970s and 80s.&nbsp;

Shami along with Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav have taken giant leaps in making the Indian attack feared in world cricket.&nbsp;

"You and everyone else in the world will agree to this -- that no team has ever had five fast bowlers together as a package," Shami said in an online chat for ESPNcricinfo.

"Not just now, in the history of cricket, this might be the best fast-bowling unit in the world," he added.
When asked about whether the Indian pace attack is better than the Windies’ battery of 70s and 80s, Shami said that fast bowlers were waiting to take over the scene from the spinners.&nbsp;

"We have a bowler on the bench who can work up speeds of 145-48 kph (over 90mph)," said Shami, who has 180 wickets from 49 Tests.

The 29-year-old, who has rejuvenated himself to become one of the finest across formats, said that it is Indian skipper Virat Kohli who is central to things but when it comes to fast bowling, Kohli leaves it for the pacers to decide.

"We surround Virat Kohli and ask him to make the decision," Shami said of the support for the Indian captain.

"But he normally says, 'Don't get me involved in all this; you decide among yourselves, I don't have an issue'.
"We support each other whether we're getting wickets or not," he said.

Shami battled weight issues, injuries and legal quarrels before making a comeback into the Indian team. He scalped 14 wickets at the ICC World Cup 2019 including a match-winning memorable hat-trick. Shami also took 13 wickets during South Africa Test series in 2019.

Nick Compton roared into the international scene with his strong technique and scored back-to-back Test centuries for England in 2013 away Test series against New Zealand, in Dunedin and Wellington. However, he couldn’t cement his spot in the England Test side and managed to play 16 Tests for his country. Compton has now revealed that he battled depression over the last five-six years after being left out of the England team.

Compton, while opening up about the illness, said that depression is something that creeps up on you and is not easily understood by you and others while adding that is why it took some time to come to terms and make a transition to a new life.&nbsp;

"There always comes a point in one’s career when things can’t be more difficult. And there’s no doubt that when I was left out of the England team, I did struggle with depression over the last 5-6 years. It’s something that creeps up on you, something that’s not easily understood by yourself &amp; others. So, it’s taken some time to come terms to that &amp; make the transition to a new life,” Compton said on an Instagram live show “Say Yash to Sports”.

Australian head coach Justin Langer said there is a “good chance” the Aussies will visit England later this year for a limited-overs series against Eoin Morgan and Co. With Langer’s plan to touch optimum fitness and form by early September, the home ODI series against Zimbabwe is in major doubt.&nbsp;

Australia were scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20Is in England from July 3 to 16 but the rubber was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Former Cricket Australia CEO, who resigned earlier this week, had talked about the idea of touring in September if health protocols and bio-security concerns could be addressed.

International cricket will be back to life next month when England face the West Indies for a three-match Test series with the games to be played in bio-secure venues, without crowds.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani on Wednesday said he doesn’t see the T20 World Cup happening in Australia later this year while adding the cricketing world can’t risk players’ safety in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;
Mani’s comments follow Cricket Australia Chairman Earl Eddings’s comments after the latter said that the showpiece event seems “unrealistic and very, very difficult” given the logistical and international travel concerns.&nbsp;

<h2>The feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year: Ehsan Mani</h2>

"We have had a lot of discussions and the feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year. ICC has World Cups lined up in 2021 and 2023, so we have a gap year where we can adjust this event," Mani told reporters.

"God forbid if some player(s) falls ill or mishap occurs during the tournament, it will have a big impact and create panic in the cricket world and we can't take that risk," Mani, who also heads the ICC's Finance and Commercial Rights Committee, said.

Mani conceded that bio-bubble environment is feasible only in a bilateral series but would be difficult when 16 teams are participating in a tournament.&nbsp;

"Having a bio-bubble environment is feasible for say a bilateral series like Pakistan in England, but it is very difficult when 16 teams are involved," the PCB chief added.

ICC, after their last Board meeting, had said that they would take a call on the T20 World Cup next month as it wants to take the best possible decision regarding the future of the tournament. Whereas CA chairman Eddings said the prospect of hosting the T20 World Cup is unlikely.

"I would say it is unlikely...Trying to get (teams from) 16 countries into Australia when most countries are still going through COVID spiking is unrealistic or very, very difficult," CA chairman Eddings said on Tuesday.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani on Wednesday said he doesn’t see the T20 World Cup happening in Australia later this year while adding the cricketing world can’t risk players’ safety in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mani’s comments follow Cricket Australia Chairman Earl Eddings’s comments after the latter said that the showpiece event seems “unrealistic and very, very difficult” given the logistical and international travel concerns. The feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year: Ehsan Mani "We have had a lot of discussions and the feeling is it (T20 World Cup) would not be possible this year.
