The West Indies team led by Jason Holder departed from Antigua for England to play three Test starting July 8 and arrived in Manchester on Tuesday. All the players and staff completed their COVID-19 tests and all the results were confirmed as negative. Players and staff on board will be tested again&nbsp;for coronavirus.

West Indies, who have sent a strong 25-man squad for the England tour, will live, train and play in a “bio-secure” environment with strict protocols restricting movement in and out of the venues. Hence, 11 reserve players are travelling to train and prepare the Test squad while ensuring replacements are available in case of any injury.

England vs West Indies: Windies arrive in Manchester as all players test negative; series to start from July 8

Shreyas Iyer is pretty confident that his consistent performances in past one year has sealed the lingering debate about India's number four slot in white ball cricket.

Having tried the likes of Ambati Rayudu Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni, India recalled the Mumbai youngster in the tour against West Indies, in the aftermath of their semifinal loss to New Zealand in the World Cup.

He impressed against the West Indies but the 25-year-old was a revelation in New Zealand tour earlier this year when he ended up being the top run-getter with one century and two half-centuries in India's 0-3 series whitewash.

"If you have been playing for India at that position for a year now that means you have sealed it. There should be no more questions asked about it," Iyer said in an Instagram chat hosted by his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals.

Iyer scored 217 runs in the series -- the most by an Indian No 4 in a three-match bilateral series.

"When the debate was going on about No 4, performing at No 4 and completely sealing the position was really satisfying."

Iyer however said he's flexible to bat at any position as per the team's requirement.

"But when you are playing for India, you need to be very much flexible at any position or whatever the team requires. I feel I can bat any position depending on the situation," he said.

Having missed out of the World Cup, Iyer was recalled for the Caribbean tour as he struck back-to-back half-centuries at No 5 in Port of Spain in their 2-0 win.

Indian captain Virat Kohli was reminded of his younger days and complimented Iyer saying he was "exactly the same".

"It's really a phenomenal feeling when he talks or compliments his teammates... He's a role model for all the youngsters out there," Iyer said.

Describing Kohli like a lion in the team, he said:

"Whenever he goes out on the field it feels as if he's playing his first game. He's never tired, always energetic like a lion. You see a different body language when he enters the ground, something great to learn from him."

The Delhi Capitals captain further recalled his debut season in 2015 where he ended up getting 439 runs, playing with a fractured index finger.

"It was a dramatic season. During the season after the third game, I fractured my index finger and thought I won't be able to play anymore," he recalled adding how head coach Gary Kirsten egged him on as he went on to clinch the Emerging Player Award.

"But Gary said 'we really need you'. He wanted me to play and told me 'hide somewhere while fielding and just bat for us'.

"I could have done anything for the team. To score those many runs with a fractured finger was like a dream come true. Not many know about this story."

Having got the captaincy baton from Gautam Gambhir midway into their struggling campaign in 2018, Iyer led Delhi Capitals to their first playoffs in seven years last year.

"I knew the situation would come and it would be thrown at me. I was prepared. I really enjoyed the responsibility coming at top. We're youngsters, fearless and showed a lot of maturity as well," he said as the team finally shed off the 'perennial underachievers' tag to make the last-four in 2019.

The self belief was key to DC's success in 2019 after a gap of seven years, said Iyer.

"We had the sense of belief in ourselves and team. Our aim was to make the play-offs."

"We had this one goal in our mind -- to give our 100 per cent. Results didn't really matter.

"Once we knew we did our preparation, we should not get bogged down and regret. We trained really hard and that stood out pretty well."

DC were out in play-offs but for the first time in many years, looked like a team that could go the distance. "We did and proved that we're capable of winning the IPL. We hope the fans give the same energy this year. We don't know what will happen or will it be held closed-door... Hopefully we will win the trophy this year," he concluded.&nbsp;

I think I have sealed No 4 position: Shreyas Iyer

Kevin Pietersen does not think Ben Stokes should captain England if Joe Root is forced to miss a game against the West Indies because it would heap too much pressure on the all-rounder.

Root's wife is due to give birth in July, meaning he risks missing one of the three behind-closed-doors Tests against the Caribbean side next month.

Root has backed vice-captain Stokes to do a good job in his absence, but former England skipper Pietersen is wary about the all-rounder assuming even more responsibility.

Pietersen, who said he "hated" the responsibility of being captain of England for a brief spell, would prefer wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler to take over.

"Do I want to see Ben Stokes change from who he is and the current player he is? Probably not. Jos Buttler would be my guy," he told talkSPORT.

"The entertainers and the guys that have to carry the mantle in the team sometimes aren't the best captains and sometimes struggle with the extra added pressure."

Pietersen said the captaincy changed how players were viewed in the dressing room.

"I struggled with it, I absolutely hated it and I was rubbish," he said. "You have to change and I couldn't command the respect of the dressing room."

England begin their summer of cricket, which has been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, on July 8 with the first Test against the West Indies.

Further international matches against Pakistan, Australia and Ireland are all pencilled in, but they are all likely to be played in empty stadiums.

"I would rather be in the broadcaster chair than in the players' chair because entertainers like atmosphere and you are going to have to build your own atmosphere and dig as deep as you can to try your best and perform in front of a whisper," Pietersen said.

"It is going to be hard, especially for cricket. Six hours, when you're in the field and guys are batting and you're 100 overs into an innings, England are going to have to dig deep because it is going to feel like a warm-up game, with no one watching."

The sporting world is opening up steadily following the prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. While international cricket is set to resume from July 8, dark clouds continue to hover over two of biggest cricketing events in the year 2020 – the T20 World Cup and Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.&nbsp;

There has been no official word on the future of the two tournaments with IPL remaining suspended indefinitely and T20 World Cup being on schedule. While there have been reports on T20 World Cup heading towards postponement with IPL 2020 taking up the October-November slot, former West Indies bowler and a legend of the game, Michael Holding is of the view that the BCCI has every right to go for IPL in that window if the T20 World Cup gets postponed.&nbsp;

Michael Holding: BCCI has every right to host IPL 2020 if there is no T20 World Cup

South African cricketer and&nbsp;captain of Lancashire County Cricket Club, Dane Vilas, in an exclusive interview with WION's Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up on lockdown experience, resumption of training for cricketers, social distancing in cricket, T20 World Cup, the financial impact of COVID-19 on the game, and much more.

Digvijay Singh Deo: Thank you for your time, Dane.&nbsp;How have you been through this period and how has life in lockdown been?

Dane Vilas: It's been strange and difficult at times. Given the situation around the world, I have been keeping well. Looking from the outside, it does seem as if things are getting better.

DSD: This virus has actually struck much closer than most imagine, your county chairman David Hodgkiss passed away after contracting the virus at the end of March.

Dane Vilas: It was very sad to lose him a couple of months back. He was a key figure at the Lancashire cricket club, a lovely man and someone I had a great relationship with. He was extremely passionate about the game and it is a great loss for the game and our club. Everyone is susceptible to the virus and it is crucial to stay safe in these trying times.

DSD: The lockdown has been pretty strict in England, much like in India, so how is your family coping in these times?

Dane Vilas: It has been difficult. When the lockdown began, we were only allowed to be outdoors for about 1 or 2 hours in a day, fortunately, there is a huge park in the Vicinity, so at least I was able to take the kids out for a bike ride. The good thing is that people are adhering to social distancing rules. Some of the restrictions have been relaxed lately, so people have been leaving their homes more often. I don't get the opportunity to spend much quality time with my family that often because I'm usually travelling during the county season, so in that sense, this is a welcome change. I have a 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter and it is great to be able to spend two whole months with them at a stretch. I'm obviously missing the game of cricket and sport in general. Social interaction has been minimal and that is a strange thing to get used to.so overall it has been a bittersweet time.

DSD: Sport is usually the great healer and we have seen the example of Rugby doing that in South Africa but at this time almost every sportsperson around the world is feeling helpless and perhaps frustrated as well.

Dane Vilas: Sport is definitely a massive industry and forms a huge part of many people's lives. Some people plan their whole week around a sporting event. Sport is an escape for people, it can help them relax and provide much-needed entertainment. It is hugely important for the mental well-being of the viewers and the players. All of us players want to return to action, so at the moment we're feeling like caged lions. The weather in England over the last couple of months has been perfect for cricket, so it is very frustrating to not play. However, I realise that the world is facing bigger problems at the moment. Various sports like football are trying to work around the problem and hopefully, cricket will resume soon. It is great to be able to entertain people and I can't wait to do that again.

<img alt="Dane Vilas" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="a31f7cb6-ad00-4d31-8e58-aff446e9f35a" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_Del8383965.jpg" />

DSD: The ECB has taken the lead in allowing for limited training to resume across counties, so how has it been for you?

Dane Vilas: Right now, the domestic sides aren't allowed to practice outdoors. They are only allowing the national team to train on a trial basis.the priority for the ECB&nbsp;is to hold the test series against West Indies and Pakistan in the near future, so they will assess how safe it is to train and based on that, they will then create guidelines for the domestic players to return to training. I think it makes sense to open up training with a small group of players, so initially, only the bowlers will be able to practice.

DSD: Can social distancing happen on a cricket ground and during a match, it is, after all, a team sport and what is the fun in not having contact when say you score a 50 or a hundred or a bowler takes a catch.

Dane Vilas: In any team sport, the camaraderie among the players forms the essence of the game. It is definitely going to be difficult to practice social distancing while playing. However, I believe that players will be willing to make these small compromises for the sport to resume.

DSD: How will the life and career of a professional cricketer change now. You for one have a contract with Lancashire&nbsp;but if the season continues to get delayed then revenue gets affected and then there is also the trickle-down effect which ultimately gets down to the players...

Dane Vilas: Many county clubs, including Lancashire, have already been financially hit. All us players have taken a pay cut to help the organisation deal with the shutdown. We are fortunate that we still have our jobs, but I think a lot of employees are at the risk of losing theirs because of this crisis. There will definitely a trickle-down effect and we have already started to see the first stages of that phenomenon. I believe the whole landscape of the world will change because of the virus and cricket is no different. All we can do as sportspersons are adapt to the new normal. All of us in some way have adapted to the lockdown and that is the template to move forward. We have found ways to communicate with each other with the help of technology, with video calls and zoom meetings, which is a positive outcome of the crisis. Every adverse situation provides us with a new opportunity and I'm sure we will come out of this crisis stronger.

<img alt="Dane Vilas" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="8c577298-8506-4093-84d3-8e57b0ab1db6" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_Del8385942.jpg" />

DSD: There are other revenue streams that are going to be affected, a lot was riding on the hundred for one in England but that’s been shelved.

Dane Vilas: It is extremely disappointing that the hundred has been cancelled. I know that the organisers had been working on the event for a few years and I'm sure it would have done wonders for the game of cricket in England. There was so much hype during the world cup in England in 2019 and all that momentum was supposed to culminate with the inaugural season of the hundred. Now the authorities have to go back to the drawing board and re-plan everything, which is a lot of hard work. It is hard to really predict how badly we will be hit in terms of our finances, we will only be able to get a clear answer in a couple of years because this crisis will certainly have a long-term effect on the game. As players, these things are not really in our control and we need to find a way to make the most of the situation.

DSD: Dane, you play across the world in T20 leagues, huge question marks over the IPL, the PSL got affected in March, will there always be a doubt in the minds of players when they step on a flight.

Dane Vilas: Over the last few years, there are many players who earn their basic living through these T20 leagues across the world. These specialised T20 players will suffer huge losses. The whole ecosystem will take a hit, that means it will affect everyone from the top dogs to the lesser players. There are travel restrictions present across the world and we have no idea when they will be lifted. The hardest part is not knowing when this crisis will be over or not knowing when we will be out on the field. There is no goal to work towards right now, so it takes time to come to terms with that reality.

As far as the risk of travelling is concerned, it completely depends on the individual. A young cricketer who lives alone might be willing to take that risk because he can isolate himself. On the other hand, a cricketer who lives with his family has young kids and is constantly in contact with his parents, will probably not be willing to put himself in harm's way. As people, we have to accept whatever decisions the players make without judgement because everyone has different circumstances. I think we also have to listen to the advice of the medical authorities because they have our best interests in mind and ultimately our health is the priority.

DSD: The ICC cricket committee has come up with a set of recommendations on the resumption of cricket. The big change they have suggested is the ban on the use of saliva on the ball, the bowlers aren't going to be too happy.

Dane Vilas: Yes, it will be difficult for the bowlers to generate that polish on the ball. I guess they will have to use more of their own sweat now. The ball manufacturers have also been experimenting with some sort of wax which might help with seam movement. However, you never know, this rule change might just help the bowlers become more skilful. All these measures are being undertaken on a trial basis and we haven't even begun playing cricket yet, so I think it is important to be patient. I have complete faith in the ICC and the cricket authorities that they will make the right decision for all the players and the stakeholders of the sport.

<img alt="Dane Vilas" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="30c77b25-456c-4fb2-bc2b-fec6b6bca5ae" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1P69FU.jpg" />

DSD: But look at it this way,&nbsp;any sport currently, behind closed doors or not till we have a vaccine is bound to be risky. Should the template of the game be changed and is it fair in your opinion.

Dane Vilas: There is a need for the game to be flexible at the moment. Unfortunately, we have no blueprint or handbook on ways to deal with the coronavirus because this is a truly unprecedented crisis. The integrity of the game must be kept intact, but the sport must adapt and move forward, otherwise, we won't be able to play the game we love for a long time.

DSD: There is also a huge ICC tournament on this year down in Australia, now Australia at the moment is pretty much opening up gradually, what do you think, should the T20 world cup go ahead?

Dane Vilas: I am an optimistic person, so I think the tournament can go ahead. We are about five months away from the tournament starting and the situation is largely under control in Australia. The T20 world cup is a huge tournament, one of the flagship events of the ICC and it will be a great boost for the game of cricket. The ICC, though will not put any player at risk. Logistically it will be a challenge for the authorities to fly each team into Australia, but with what's at stake, they will be more than up to the task.

DSD: We are also now seeing sport starting to fight back. The German Bundesliga is back on and that sort of gives some hope to other athletes and leagues around the world. It will help in removing the anxiety of players returning to action, what do you reckon?

Dane Vilas: Absolutely. Sport has the power to inspire people, to bring people together from all walks of life. Sport can also help in uplifting the spirit of the people, which can in a way, help fight the virus. The ball is slowly starting to roll in terms of sporting action returning, the Bundesliga has started and Sri Lanka cricket is ready to host India and Bangladesh in July. Hopefully, by the end of the year, we can return to somewhat of normal life and we'll get to witness a great T20 world cup.

South African cricketer and captain of Lancashire County Cricket Club, Dane Vilas, in an exclusive interview with WION's Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up on lockdown experience, resumption of training for cricketers, social distancing in cricket, T20 World Cup, the financial impact of COVID-19 on the game, and much more.

Digvijay Singh Deo: Thank you for your time, Dane. How have you been through this period and how has life in lockdown been? DSD: The ECB has taken the lead in allowing for limited training to resume across counties, so how has it been for you? Dane Vilas: Right now, the domestic sides aren't allowed to practice outdoors. They are only allowing the national team to train on a trial basis.the priority for the ECB is to hold the test series against West Indies and Pakistan in the near future, so they will assess how safe it is to train and based on that, they will then create guidelines for the domestic players to return to training. You for one have a contract with Lancashire but if the season continues to get delayed then revenue gets affected and then there is also the trickle-down effect which ultimately gets down to the players... DSD: But look at it this way, any sport currently, behind closed doors or not till we have a vaccine is bound to be risky. Dane Vilas: Saliva ban may force bowlers to become more skillful

Following India's phenomenal run in the recently concluded ICC Women's T20 World Cup, women's cricket was looking at an unprecedented rise in popularity and craze.

Following India's phenomenal run in the recently concluded ICC Women's T20 World Cup, women's cricket was looking at an unprecedented rise in popularity and craze. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures have wiped out the entire sporting calendar. Sportspersons have been restricted to train indoors in a bid to keep themselves fit with absolutely no live sporting action happening, at the moment. Ace Indian batswoman, Smriti Mandhana, in an exclusive interview with WION's Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, opened up on her love for batting, life in lockdown, rapport with Jemimah Rodrigues, bucket list as Red Bull athlete, experience in Women's T20 World Cup and more. × Digvijay Singh Deo: Smriti, welcome to the show. I must start by asking you about the campaign I saw a few days ago the Team Mask Force. That campaign also had the who’s who of Indian cricket with Sachin, Sourav, Rahul joining the current team. It is also an indication of how much the stock of the Women’s team has risen in recent years to find you, Mithali and Harmanpreet there. Five years back this wasn’t possible. Smriti: Yes, there has been a massive growth in women's cricket in the country, especially after the 2017 ODI World Cup. Regarding the campaign, I think it is necessary to motivate the citizens to do something to wear a mask in the current climate. I'm delighted to be part of such an initiative undertaken by the government. I had no idea that legends of the game, like Sachin Tendulkar, would be a part of the campaign. So it's special to be involved in something like this. Five years ago, we probably wouldn't have been able to share any stage with our male counterparts, but it just shows how much the game has grown in India. Members of our team are recognizable faces and I think women's cricket in India is going through a good phase. DSD: So talking of mask warriors how has this last one month been for you. What has the schedule been like? I did read that you are playing online Ludo with your teammates. Smriti: After the T20 World Cup in March, we were supposed to take a two-week break after a long season, it was a very busy schedule in the previous six months. But who would have thought that the two-week break would extend into a full-fledged lockdown for months. I think now since we have been at home for a while, all of us have found different ways of entertaining ourselves. Ludo is something we enjoy playing because we can also talk to each other while the game is on. So it's also a good way to keep in touch with each other. But the last ten days, Jemimah Rodrigues and I have been doing a show called 'double trouble', so that has kept me busy and it feels good to be finally doing something constructive during the lockdown. I was getting bored sitting at home and not being able to do much. DSD: You share a great rapport with Jemima Rodrigues. Like you, she is another young prodigy who is finding her feet at the top level. What sort of camaraderie do you share and tell me a bit more about this show? Smriti: Jemimah and I share a great bond. We didn't know each other before Jemimah came into the team about two years back, but we were roommates for the first 4 or 5 months and we really hit it off. We share a lot of memories, both on and off the pitch. So one day we were just reminiscing about the times we have spent together and thought it would be a good idea to make a fun show. I don't think we've had a show like this where active athletes discuss things in a candid manner. Since we keep troubling each other, we thought it would be apt to call the show 'double trouble'. DSD: Through this lockdown period we have seen the greats of modern-day sport come up with challenges for their fans, be it Roger Federer or the 100-volley challenge by Andy Murray and Kim Sears. How important is it for you to engage with fans in these times? Smriti: Yes, fans usually are only able to see one side of us athletes. But if we interact and engage with them through social media, they will be able to get a glimpse of how we spend time off the field. So hopefully with the show, we can entertain the fans with our stories and anecdotes than viewers can relate to. We will have fellow athletes as guests as well, so it should be something that everyone will enjoy. One of the hallmarks of a Red Bull athlete is to constantly challenge the odds...So does Smriti Mandhana have a bucket list, cliff diving, jumping out of a plane, perhaps even off-roading. Smriti: Unfortunately in our BCCI contracts, we have a clause which does not allow us to take part in any extreme sport. But there is a lot of work that red bull does with formula one. I would love to be part of any F1 event since I love motorsport. Red bull has a state of the art performance centre and so many top athletes across sports are associated with them. So even if I just get the opportunity to interact with any of the sportspersons, it would be a great learning experience for me. Till I'm playing cricket for India, I'm not sure if I'll be able to skydive from a plane. View this post on Instagram Happiness is contagious#goodvibes A post shared by Smriti Mandhana (@smriti_mandhana) on Feb 8, 2020 at 4:09am PST × DSD: I love the way you go about your cricket, you play fearlessly if the ball is there to be hit you hit it. Describe your mental approach to an innings. Smriti: I like to keep things very simple. In the past when I've tried to overthink my strategy, it has never worked. So an over-analytical approach for the game has never helped me perform well. I treat every delivery with the merit it deserves and has enough confidence in my ability to deal with the challenge. The mental preparation for me is just to keep my eyes on the ball and play accordingly, that is when I feel best about my batting. If the day comes when I feel that this approach is not paying dividends, then I will tweak my preparation, but at the moment I am comfortable with my process and don't want to unnecessarily overthink it. If the ball is in the slot and meant to be hit, then I strike it. It's as simple as that. DSD: The dramatic explosion of the coronavirus sort of made us forget the T20 World Cup very fast. Have you managed to overcome the hurt of falling at the final hurdle? Smriti: The final loss really hurt us a lot as a team. Especially because it was a huge match and we lost the chance of picking up a trophy. But now I have tried to move on from that defeat. I have to look at it from the perspective of a learning experience. Over the last few years, we have lost a few big matches, including the 2017 world cup final. But you cannot dwell on the past, I must look towards the future in figure out ways in which I can improve and help the team. So my goal is to improve aspects of my game and be ready for the next tournament. DSD: What does a loss like this teach a team, the good teams always rebound from tough defeats. Pankaj Advani our 23-time World Champion said something very pertinent to me some time back that sport gives you second chances, life as we are seeing right now does not. Smriti: Failure is a better teacher than success. You can learn more from a bad patch of form than a big score. After the final, none of us spoke much to each other, all of us were dealing with the disappointment in our own space. As a team, the defeat especially hurt because we weren't able to put up a fight. So hopefully we can learn from the match, and go one better in a world cup final next time. DSD: What we are seeing with the women’s team though is the emergence of a young bunch of players who hopefully will be together for a long time. Is that the missing piece of the jigsaw Smriti; the nucleus is there, we just have to be patient. Smriti: Our average age is just 23 and that is something to be proud of. I think we were one of the youngest teams in the tournament and our performances throughout the campaign, barring the final, were excellent. I think if these teams sticks together for the next 3-4 years, the sky is the limit for us. The talent is definitely present and if we are able to work hard and learn from our mistakes, then we will undoubtedly win major tournaments. DSD: Now one thing a lot of us were looking forward to was the Women’s T20 Challenge on the sidelines of the IPL. Sadly, the IPL has been indefinitely postponed but this must have been fun of playing a televised tournament alongside the IPL. Smriti: We had a two-team challenge tournament in 2018, and last year it increased to three teams. The final last year in Jaipur drew a packed crowd, so the game is moving the right direction. This year I was really excited because the tournament was supposed to be a four-team affair, but unfortunately, it can't take place. I think we are not yet ready for an eight-team Women's IPL, but there is potential for a 4-6 team to participate in an event. I'm confident that whenever we reach that stage of hosting a Women's IPL, it is going to be a huge push for women's cricket in India. It will also help our team to prepare for big events like the world cup. I'm sure the BCCI has a long term plan in mind for the Women's IPL and they won't be rushed into a decision. View this post on Instagram After batting for 5 hours wondering when will I get to bat next . . Thanks for the trendy helmet @redbullindia ;) A post shared by Smriti Mandhana (@smriti_mandhana) on Jun 17, 2019 at 8:40pm PDT × DSD: What has been the most important cricketing advice that was given to you by someone you look up to. Smriti: After the 2017 ODI World Cup, I had a bad run of 17 matches where I didn't score big runs. I was obviously worried about my form and was a bit hassled. At that time, my parents reminded me of the time when I used to play cricket purely for the joy of the game when I was a kid. They told me to think about that time and try to ignore all the external pressures of being an international cricketer. I think enjoying the game is very important and I have tried to do that over the past few years, regardless of my performance. That piece of advice has taken a bit of the burden of my shoulders and given me a bit more freedom. There was a time I could not walk for three months because of an injury, so I cherish the fact that I am able to play cricket for a living. DSD: I want to end this interview on an optimistic note so what is the one thing you want to do when this lockdown ends? Smriti: Batting. It is something that gives me a lot of joy. It's just not a sport for me, it is what I live for. The feeling I get when I strike a ball sweetly is like no other. Nothing else can give me the feeling of holding the bat and walking out to play. So that's the first thing I would like to do once this crisis dies down. But I realise the gravity of the prevailing situation and I hope we can overcome this pandemic as soon as possible.

Exclusive: 'Cricket is just not a sport for me, it is what I live for' - Smriti Mandhana opens up on her love for the game, rapport with Jemimah and much more

After the massive success of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, women’s cricket in India was looking at an unprecedented rise in popularity. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has shattered the entire sporting calendar. Sportspersons, coaches, support staff, everyone have been restricted to train and work indoors with uncertainty looming large over the resumption of sporting action.&nbsp;

Indian women team’s head coach, WV Raman, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, spoke about a lot of topics ranging from the importance of team bonding, life in lockdown, the emergence of talented youngsters, India’s journey in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Women’s IPL and much more... &nbsp;&nbsp;

Digvijay Singh Deo: Raman, thanks for joining us. It was just over a month ago that India were in that iconic final at the MCG - but it feels much longer doesn't it with everything that has happened since then with reference to the coronavirus...

WV&nbsp;Raman:&nbsp;Yes, it does seem like a very long time ago, almost a different world. The girls had a great run till the final of the ICC World T20 and played some great cricket. But since then life has taken a turn for the worse.even while we were in Australia in early March, there were indications about the threat of the coronavirus. At that time, we were beginning to realise the problems it could pose. But since then it has become a pandemic and made life extremely difficult for people across the world.

Every day is a challenge. But this situation also gives us a chance to reflect on the things which we took for granted.this is the time for humanity to show resilience. Mankind has to collectively fight this pandemic, while still being in isolation, to prevail over it.

DSD:&nbsp;What has the lockdown been like for you? As a coach, I presume you are the kind of person used to interacting with a fair number of people on a daily basis - is this almost a welcome break?

WV&nbsp;Raman: I am no different from any other individual, everyone is going through the same fear and anxiety. But at the same time, all of us are also trying to stay positive in these difficult times. If life would have been normal, then we might have organised a couple of camps for the girls to work on their fitness and training. But obviously that is not possible. The thing we need to focus on now is getting back to normalcy as soon as possible. All of us are in this together and we need to keep our spirits up and just hope for the best, let's hope there isn't a great spike in the number of cases in the near future. So hopefully we will overcome this crisis and all of us will get back to leading our normal lives.

DSD: A&nbsp;seasoned veteran like yourself might find it easier to deal with this virus state of existence than perhaps a very young team that you are in charge of... I'm sure you are in touch with them - how are they coping?

WV&nbsp;Raman: Yes I'm sure it will be a challenge for them. But I know all of them are very social media savvy, so they are keeping in touch and trying to raise the spirits of each other. At this time. You need to show creativity in the way you interact with other people as well because it has been more than three weeks since the lockdown and everyone's patience is also being tested. The girls need to ensure that they don't get on each others' nerves. It is an interesting phase and there are many important lessons we can learn from this crisis. I remember when I was playing league cricket in England back in the 80s, we used to have just one game on the weekend, so throughout the week, we had to find a way to stay occupied and do something worthwhile.

The problem back then was that we didn't have the option of using social media. But this generation has an advantage because that opens up a lot of avenues which allow people to spend time in a constructive manner. Can you just imagine what this lockdown would have been like without any social media or the internet?

DSD:&nbsp;I just read Smriti Mandana saying that the girls are playing ludo online with each other to keep up the team bond... Do you approve of this lockdown-era team bonding exercise?

WV&nbsp;Raman: I think it is good for team spirit and it is a fun activity to do during the lockdown. Games like ludo and monopoly can also give you life lessons as well. Playing monopoly can help you in the long run in managing finances.

DSD: There is, of course, a lot of uncertainty around the cricket calendar right now - all the women cricketers were looking forward to playing in the T20 Challenge alongside the IPL playoffs at this time of the year... But that isn't happening and the tour of England in June is also doubtful... What do you get your players to focus on to try and keep the motivation and fitness in such a scenario?

WV&nbsp;Raman: There are two ways to look at it. One perspective is that they have a lot of spare time now, which means they can do various physical activities even though their movement is restricted. They don't have training equipment nor the company of their team-mates, which takes the stress out of an intense training session. But there are other basic things they can do to keep themselves in shape. They will miss out on the technical aspect of training, but we cannot do anything about it.

The top priority right now is for everyone in the world to stay healthy.there are many, like our migrant workers, who are going through tremendous anxiety on a daily basis because they don't know what the future holds for them. I don't think we should be focussing on the sport right now, the priority is overcoming this crisis. Once we have achieved that, then we can discuss the next step.

DSD:&nbsp;You've had a bit of time now to let the World Cup really sink in - the final didn't quite go the way that India wanted - but you must be proud of such a young side - just 22 years old on average - marched into that title clash.

WV&nbsp;Raman:&nbsp;Yes definitely, lots of players in the team said after the tournament that the performance was a confidence boost for them in terms of t20 international cricket, since they were sure of their abilities in the 50 over game, but not so much in T20 cricket. The performances in the triangular series and the World Cup in Australia were fantastic. It was great that a team that wasn't sure of their abilities in the format played such great cricket. The young side showed great maturity in the tournament. It was very satisfying for me as a coach since most of the games were hard-fought victories. So the girls stood up to all the challenges that were thrown at them. Unfortunately, on the big day, things didn't go our way but that can happen to the best of teams as well. On the whole, it was a campaign to be proud of and given the fans back home a lot of hope for the future of the women's game in the country.

Most importantly, I think the cricket fraternity would have realised that we as a team can compete at the highest level. I think moving forward, it's important that we do not repeat those mistakes and learn from them.

<img alt="WV Raman" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="dd9d803f-42ea-4f86-b7ad-bf36e0131675" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/000_1PO4WO.jpg" />

DSD:&nbsp;You said in an interview a few days after the final that the semi-final against England being washed out had a negative impact on the team and the momentum that had been built up... Can you talk us through how that was playing out in the dressing room, behind the scenes in the buildup to the final - and how you and the team look at that final now?

WV&nbsp;Raman: I don't want anyone to think that my statement was an excuse for our performance in the final. But the fact is that if a team doesn't play in the days leading up to a big match, it is going to be a major challenge, especially for such a young side like ours. The reason I say that is because it is only with experience that you are able to switch on mentally to gear up for a big match like a World Cup semi-final or final. The ability of players to be mentally ready for a big match increases with experience.

There was rain almost every day in Australia in the days before the final, so we only had one nets session to prepare in those few days. And then suddenly, the girls were playing the world cup final in front of 80,000 people at the m.c.g. That experience certainly would have been great for the girls, but mentally I don't think they were totally ready for that clash from the first ball. You can't hold it against them or blame them, that preparedness only comes with experience. Then of course in a t20 game, if the first 30-40 minutes don't go your way it' very difficult to bounce back and that's what happened in the final.

DSD: The big headline from India's world cup campaign was that all those wins came without Smriti and Harman having to carry the batting unit... Everybody played their part...

WV&nbsp;Raman: Yes, that was a mental block that people needed to get out of their system. There was a myth that we could only win if our star players- Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur- performed. So it was great to see other girls chipping in and contributing. You are more likely to succeed when the team plays as a unit. It was unfortunate for Smriti and Harmanpreet to not put up the numbers they were expected to, but this can happen in any tournament.

It is impossible for the big players to score big runs in every single game, even the best of players have their off days and that's what makes cricket such an interesting game.

DSD: The tournament also thrust into the spotlight the young Shafali Verma - India's highest run-getter, raw power-hitting at just 16 years of age that had all the pundits and former players singing her praises... It's a lot to process for such a young player, isn't it?

WV&nbsp;Raman:&nbsp;She took the world by storm. Everyone was eager to watch her play before the world cup because of her age. There were many who were curious to see what she brought to the team, that too in a major competition like the world cup. Her fearless batting throughout the tournament has won her many admirers and a lot of people are predicting great things for her in the future. But there is a school of thought which believes that she cannot continue to play the same way she has played in the long run and hope to succeed.

But that is not the correct approach to take towards her batting. Her talent is there for everyone and she is intelligent, she knows what aspects of her game she needs to work on and hopefully, she will continue to perform well. There were lots of people in the game who doubted Virender Sehwag as well. They reckoned that Sehwag wasn't a test match batsman because he was unconventional. But he went on to prove all his doubters wrong and went on to have a great test career, scoring runs in every country at a phenomenal strike rate.
So there is no need to over-analyse Verma's game, she needs to keep her head down and continue to work.

DSD: We heard Harmanpreet say after the World Cup that India is around 5 years behind England and Australia in terms of big tournament experience... But because this team is so young, is this largely the group that you hope will take the next step?

WV&nbsp;Raman: Experience is crucial in building a world-class side. For example, the Australian team that won the world cup had played together in 2 or 3 finals before the T20 World Cup this year. One way the team can gain more experience is by playing together for a long period of time. I see that happening with the current crop of players, most of them are young and they have shown that they also have the temperament to deal with the pressures of playing at the highest level.

Because most of the players I have are young, if they are able to play together for the next 2-3 years, I see them becoming as dominant as the Australian side we see right now.i would say the possibility of this team playing together for the next 7-8 years is very high.

DSD: You have said that you are trying to build a team that can dominate world cricket for a few years - one aspect of that is to keep the talent coming in.. Are you also working with the BCCI on how to expand the pool - and the larger eco-system of the women's game?

WV&nbsp;Raman:&nbsp;The beauty in a huge country like India is that you are always told about emerging talents from various state associations.we have programs in place that to guide and nurture the talent of these young cricketers. A whole structure is being created for these girls to come through the ranks.

The under 19 world cup will begin next year and we already have tournaments like the emerging Asia Cup, this has given a lot of young girls the impetus to take up the sport. Earlier what used to happen was that whosoever did well in the under 19 domestic competition, would get selected for the senior team. So overnight there was a major jump in the level of cricket that player was competing in .they were expected to find a recipe for success at the international level with very little experience. But that will hopefully change now, we are seeing India 'A' teams going on tours and playing regular matches.

The structure we are trying to create will ensure that players who come into the senior team are not overawed by the level of cricket at the international level. We are trying to implement the stricture that the men's team have, where a player has already played about 6-7 years of competitive cricket before breaking into the senior team. This makes the players battle-hardened and better prepared to deal with the demands of the international game.

DSD: There were many calls for a Women's IPL in and around the World Cup.&nbsp;Do you think there is enough talent around to create a competitive and full-fledged tournament?

WV&nbsp;Raman: The idea of the Women's IPL needs to be deliberated upon, we have to clear about what the objectives the tournaments are. The other concern is that if we invite a lot of foreigners in a team in the first edition of the IPL, it is going to be difficult to change that precedent over a period of time. I think the BCCI will make the correct call on the timing and establishment of the Women's Indian Premier League. At the moment we just have to be patient and not jump the gun.

DSD: The focus now shifts to the 50-over format now and next year's World Cup in New Zealand... You have a bit more experience with Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami coming in - how will that affect your preparations?

WV&nbsp;Raman: We'll have to see when things get back to normal. We'll also have to see where India is placed in the qualification scenario, there is the possibility of playing world cup qualifiers, but we don't know that yet.let's allow things to unfold and the situation to improve and then we will work on the future of the team.&nbsp;

After the massive success of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, women’s cricket in India was looking at an unprecedented rise in popularity. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has shattered the entire sporting calendar. Sportspersons, coaches, support staff, everyone have been restricted to train and work indoors with uncertainty looming large over the resumption of sporting action. Indian women team’s head coach, WV Raman, in an exclusive interview with WION’s Sports Editor, Digvijay Singh Deo, spoke about a lot of topics ranging from the importance of team bonding, life in lockdown, the emergence of talented youngsters, India’s journey in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Women’s IPL and much more... Digvijay Singh Deo: Raman, thanks for joining us. It was just over a month ago that India were in that iconic final at the MCG - but it feels much longer doesn't it with everything that has happened since then with reference to the coronavirus... WV Raman: Yes, it does seem like a very long time ago, almost a different world. DSD: What has the lockdown been like for you? As a coach, I presume you are the kind of person used to interacting with a fair number of people on a daily basis - is this almost a welcome break? WV Raman: I am no different from any other individual, everyone is going through the same fear and anxiety. ALSO READ: Exclusive: 'Sports industry will take long time to return to normalcy' - Sania Mirza reflects on lockdown situation, cancellation of tournaments and much more DSD: A seasoned veteran like yourself might find it easier to deal with this virus state of existence than perhaps a very young team that you are in charge of... I'm sure you are in touch with them - how are they coping? WV Raman: Yes I'm sure it will be a challenge for them. DSD: I just read Smriti Mandana saying that the girls are playing ludo online with each other to keep up the team bond... Do you approve of this lockdown-era team bonding exercise? WV Raman: I think it is good for team spirit and it is a fun activity to do during the lockdown. WV Raman: There are two ways to look at it. DSD: You've had a bit of time now to let the World Cup really sink in - the final didn't quite go the way that India wanted - but you must be proud of such a young side - just 22 years old on average - marched into that title clash. WV Raman: Yes definitely, lots of players in the team said after the tournament that the performance was a confidence boost for them in terms of t20 international cricket, since they were sure of their abilities in the 50 over game, but not so much in T20 cricket. DSD: You said in an interview a few days after the final that the semi-final against England being washed out had a negative impact on the team and the momentum that had been built up... Can you talk us through how that was playing out in the dressing room, behind the scenes in the buildup to the final - and how you and the team look at that final now? WV Raman: I don't want anyone to think that my statement was an excuse for our performance in the final. WV Raman: Yes, that was a mental block that people needed to get out of their system. There was a myth that we could only win if our star players- Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur- performed. So it was great to see other girls chipping in and contributing. You are more likely to succeed when the team plays as a unit. Michael Clarke has been honoured in the Queen’s Birthday list for Australia with the former cricket captain recognised for both his sporting career and community work.

The 39-year-old, who retired from cricket in 2015, was appointed an Officer in the general division of the Order of Australia, the citation on the Governor General’s website said.

Former women’s captain Lynnette Larsen and two-time Olympic hockey gold medallist Renita Garard were both named a Member of the Order of Australia.

“That makes it more special for me,” Clarke told The Australian newspaper on Monday. “Obviously it’s an honour to receive it, but the fact it recognises the work I’ve done for charities makes it very special.”

Clarke played 115 tests for Australia, including 47 as captain, and led the side to their fifth one day World Cup title in 2015. He scored 8,643 test runs at an average of 49.10, with 28 centuries.

Clarke has been heavily involved in numerous health and children’s charities.

Former South African captain Shaun Pollock is of the view that cricket can resume normally and the usage of saliva won’t post any health risk if matches are played inside ‘bio-secure’ environment. Earlier, the ICC Cricket Committee had recommended a ban on the use of saliva to polish the ball but allowed sweat as a measure to curb the COVID-19 threat.&nbsp;

England will create a bio-secure environment in a bid to host the West Indies for a three-match series starting July 8, subject to the UK government clearance. And Pollock reckons such measures wouldn’t require banning the usage of saliva.&nbsp;

“I think the environment that’ll end up being created is almost going to be like a bubble. People will get tested, they’ll go into a two-week camp where they’re just going to sit and monitor how the conditions of their bodies change,” Pollock told the ‘Following On Cricket Podcast’.

“And if there are no symptoms, it doesn’t really matter about shining the ball then, because you’re in the bubble and no one you come into contact with will have coronavirus. So you can just get on with normal proceedings.”

The ECB is gearing up to put up a set of safety measures including playing matches in venues with on-site hotels and compulsory 14-day quarantine period for the visiting team.&nbsp;

“I’d presume that there’d be no crowds in place, every single environment they go into would be cleaned down and sprayed, and everything along those lines,” said Pollock, who has played 303 ODIs and 101 Tests for South Africa.&nbsp;

The cricket fraternity has been left divided after ICC Cricket Committee’s recommendation with former and current bowlers throwing their weight behind the decision. The proposed ban on saliva is likely to be discussed finally during the ICC Board meeting on Wednesday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Thursday clarified that it has not filed any complaint with the cyber crime unit of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) against former pacer Shoaib Akhtar, insisting that the charge was made by its legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi in his individual capacity.

Akhtar has been summoned to the FIA office in Lahore on Friday.

"Just received an absolutely vague, incomprehensible, imprecise and ambiguous Notice from FIA, Lahore. I will issue my response after due consultation with my Lawyer Salman Niazi," Akhtar tweeted.

A PCB spokesman, however, said Akhtar was summoned on Rizvi's complaint and the board has nothing to do with this matter.

"Tafazzul Rizvi is pursuing a defamation case against Shoaib Akhtar in his personal capacity, the board has filed no complaint against the fast bowler with the FIA," the spokesperson said.

Rizvi had complained to the FIA that Akhtar has been spreading propaganda and false allegations against him through social media and his youtube channel.

Rizvi has sent two notices to Akhtar -- one in Pakistan and one through a law firm in the United Kingdom -- seeking a public apology and damages worth 10 million rupees after the former fast bowler ripped him apart on his channel.

Akhtar's lawyer has responded to the notice sent in Pakistan but Rizvi said a reply was still waiting for the notice sent from the UK.

Rizvi made it clear that he intended to pursue his defamation case against the fast bowler, who had made false allegations against him and tried to damage his standing in the legal community.

The PCB has, however, filed a complaint with the FIA cyber crime cell against three former and present members of its Board of Governors.

Rizvi filed complaint against Akhtar, not PCB: clarifies cricket board

When Mohammad Amir bowled a no-ball against England on the opening day of the 2010 Test at Lord's, no one could have imagined his long stride past the crease marked the first step in a historic fixing scandal.

Two days later it was revealed that three no-balls -- two by Amir, and one by his pace partner Mohammad Asif -- had been part of a shady betting deal.

Pakistan's captain Salman Butt had orchestrated the deliberate no-balls in return for money offered by undercover journalist&nbsp;Mazhar Majeed posing as a bookmaker.

The scandal, exposed in the sting by Britain's now-defunct News of the World tabloid, rocked the cricketing world, and aftershocks can still be felt a decade on in Pakistan.

Not only did that dark morning at the revered 'home of cricket' derail the careers of three players who were banned and jailed, the saga also led to calls for Pakistan to be booted from international cricket.

Butt, Amir and Asif were tried in a London court for offences under the Gambling Act and were jailed in November 2011.

Announcing the sentences, the judge underscored the severity of the crime.

"The image and integrity of what was once a game, but is now a business, is damaged in the eyes of all, including the many youngsters who regarded three of you as heroes," Justice Jeremy Cooke said.

It marked a new low for Pakistan cricket, already reeling from the aftermath of terror attacks in Lahore on the Sri Lankan team a year before, which triggered the suspension of home internationals.

Because he pleaded guilty earlier than his two teammates, and on account of his youth, the 18-year-old Amir received worldwide sympathy.&nbsp;

He was allowed to play international cricket again in 2016 and, now 28, has been successfully reintegrated into the Pakistan team.

Asif, who received a seven-year ban and a one-year prison sentence, is now 37 and in the twilight of his career.&nbsp;

Butt, 35, still harbours hopes of an international comeback after consistent domestic performances.

As the orchestrator of one of the darkest episodes in the cricket-mad country's history, that seems unlikely, especially with match-fixing still haunting the game.

Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif were banned after a Pakistan Super League spot-fixing case in 2017.

And in April this year, the talented-yet-maverick Umar Akmal was banned in April for three years for failing to report fixing offers.

<h2>- Trouble shooting -&nbsp;</h2>

The cases have led to calls for the country to criminalise fixing, a campaign taken up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

"We need to make match-fixing a criminal offence... I have talked to the government to bring in this change and make a law related to match-fixing," PCB chairman Ehsan Mani said.

Former Pakistan captain-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja went a step further, recommending tainted players should not play again for the national team, as Pakistan contemplate the return of Sharjeel after serving his ban.

"We have suffered numerous times from bringing back tainted players yet we continue to welcome them just because of their talent," Raja told AFP.

"We should avoid being desperate and rather give new talent a chance to prosper.&nbsp;

"Cricket cannot condone such behaviour and fans need to realise that rooting for tainted players is actually harming Pakistan cricket and its image."

A tentative return of international touring sides has followed, culminating in Azhar Ali having the honour of leading Pakistan in their first Test on home soil in 10 years when Sri Lanka played in Rawalpindi in December.

When Mohammad Amir bowled a no-ball against England on the opening day of the 2010 Test at Lord's, no one could have imagined his long stride past the crease marked the first step in a historic fixing scandal.

Pakistan's captain Salman Butt had orchestrated the deliberate no-balls in return for money offered by undercover journalist Mazhar Majeed posing as a bookmaker. Because he pleaded guilty earlier than his two teammates, and on account of his youth, the 18-year-old Amir received worldwide sympathy. He was allowed to play international cricket again in 2016 and, now 28, has been successfully reintegrated into the Pakistan team. Asif, who received a seven-year ban and a one-year prison sentence, is now 37 and in the twilight of his career. - Trouble shooting - The cases have led to calls for the country to criminalise fixing, a campaign taken up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). "We should avoid being desperate and rather give new talent a chance to prosper. "Cricket cannot condone such behaviour and fans need to realise that rooting for tainted players is actually harming Pakistan cricket and its image." On the field at least, Pakistan have managed to lift the clouds. A decade after Lord's scandal, match-fixing still haunts Pakistan cricket

With international cricket gearing up for return, the ICC is discussing the possibility of introducing substitutions if a player tests positive for COVID-19 during a Test match, the ECB director of special projects Steve Elworthy said. It would be on similar grounds as the “like for like” concussions substitute across all formats of international cricket during matches and Elworthy said a similar rule could be approved for COVID-19 subs.&nbsp;

“COVID replacements are certainly something that the ICC are discussing,” Elworthy told a news portal. “I’ve seen communication about that and it’s certainly something we hope would be allowed — specifically for test matches, not necessarily ODIs (one-day internationals) or T20s (Twenty20).

ICC in talks regarding COVID-19 substitutes in Test cricket: ECB official

England captain Joe Root would be missing the first Test match against West Indies in July if it clashes with the birth of his child. However, Root has given his full backing to vice-captain Ben Stokes, who would be taking over the charge if the right-handed batsman is absent from the inaugural Test of the three-match Test series against the Men from the Caribbean.

The Test series between England and West Indies is set to commence from July 8 in Southampton, subject to government approval.&nbsp;
Root’s wife Carrie is due to give birth to their second child early in July and the English Test captain confirmed that he is in talks with the board about whether he would be able to leave the on-site hotel and then return to the bio-secure venue.

“The due date complicates things slightly. In terms of the bubble and the pregnancy, it’s always an evolving thing,” Root told reporters.

Former Pakistan pacer, Shoaib Akhtar, has been pulled up by the cybercrime unit for ‘spreading propaganda and false allegations against the Pakistan Cricket Board’. Australia's world-cup winning captain Meg Lanning is hopeful that the women's ODI World Cup will go ahead as planned next year and remains confident that their preparation for the big-ticket event will not be affected due to the coronavirus-forced break.

The 50-over World Cup is scheduled to be held in New Zealand in February-March next year but with the COVID-19 pandemic taking a toll on international tournaments such as the T20 men's World Cup, there are speculations that it could have a domino effect on the women's event.

"At this stage, we anticipate the World Cup to go ahead as scheduled (early next year) but have to wait and see how that plays out. We've got a plan in place for what it looks like but also fully understanding things can change pretty quick," Lanning told cricket.Com.Au.

"The group we've got, we've played a lot of cricket together over a long period of time and if it (the coronavirus) means we've only got a short time to prepare and get ready (for the World Cup), I've got no doubt we'll be able to do that. We'll be ready to go."

Women's cricket got a major fillip when Lanning led Australia to their fifth title, beating India by 85 runs in the T20 World Cup final in front of a packed 86,000 spectators at the iconic MCG.

It was the last top-tier tournament to be held before the global health crisis halted all cricket activities worldwide.

Lanning said the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic will not affect the popularity and momentum which women's cricket gained post this year's T20 World Cup in March.

"I don't think it'll (coronavirus) be a massive impact," she said.

"Luckily for us, it was actually the last big tournament that got played. It's sort of the last one in everyone's memories and it was such a great event. Hopefully, it's not all lost."

The 28-year-old batswoman said she is currently enjoying the time off from cricket and working towards her Level 3 coaching badge, besides starting a business degree.

"Timing-wise coming off the World Cup it was not too bad. I've enjoyed the break and the chance to spend some time at home and do all the normal things you forget about when away on tour," Lanning said.

"I haven't hit a cricket ball in eight weeks. It's been a while, and I was looking forward to that break after the World Cup. I've been exercising a fair bit to keep me sane but it's nice to get back into training now."

Robin Uthappa emerged as one promising batsman in Indian cricket. A solid domestic record and his ability to strike the ball clean made him a bright prospect in the Indian top-order, however, he failed to cement his spot in the senior team. But he had his battle with mental challenges which made him contemplate suicide several times.&nbsp;

While speaking at Royal Rajasthan Foundation’s live session ‘Mind, Body and Soul’, Uthappa revealed that the phase between 2009-2011 was the toughest for him and it became difficult for him during the off-season and non-playing days.&nbsp;

“I remember around 2009 to 2011, it was constant and I would deal with that on a daily basis. There were times where I wasn’t even thinking about cricket, it was probably the farthest thing in my mind,” he said.

“I was thinking about how I would survive this day and move on to the next, what’s happening to my life and in which direction am I heading. Cricket kept my mind off of these thoughts but it became really difficult on non-match days and during the off-season.”

Uthappa further said he thought of jumping off the balcony while adding something held him back from doing so. The stylish right-handed batsmen then emerged as one of the most consistent performers in Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders as he became the spine of the team in the top-order.

“On days, I would just be sitting there and would think to myself on the count of three, I’m going to run and jump off of the balcony but something kind of just held me back,” he recalled.

“...(I) started the process of just understanding myself as a person. I then started to seek outside help to make those changes I wanted to make in my life,” he said.

“...for some reason there, no matter what I did or how hard I worked in the nets, I was just not able to score a run off my bat. I would spend hours in the nets to get it right but that would just not happen,” he said.

“Some part of me was actually not willing to accept that I had a problem with myself...I think sometimes we don’t accept the wrong and are unwilling to do so and it is really important to have the acknowledgement.”

“The unwillingness to accept is the no one issue and especially for men, who find it difficult to accept their mental issues,” he added.

The 34-year-old was bought for Rs 3 crore by Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020 auction after being released by KKR following years of solid service. Uthappa continued that having negative experiences in life adds to one’s growth but added it is good to talk to others when a person is having a tough time battling the challenges in life.

“I feel sometimes being negative is necessary. Being negative or having negative experiences, going through trials and tribulations is sometimes necessary for one’s own growth,” he asserted.

“...I have no regrets on my negative experience as they’ve helped me develop positively. You need to go through the lulls to make you feel ecstatic about the positives.”

“I feel life is about balance and we can’t have it one way, a lopsided life is not going to be great, both negative and positive experiences are essential,” he said.

Robin Uthappa emerged as one promising batsman in Indian cricket. A solid domestic record and his ability to strike the ball clean made him a bright prospect in the Indian top-order, however, he failed to cement his spot in the senior team. But he had his battle with mental challenges which made him contemplate suicide several times. While speaking at Royal Rajasthan Foundation’s live session ‘Mind, Body and Soul’, Uthappa revealed that the phase between 2009-2011 was the toughest for him and it became difficult for him during the off-season and non-playing days. “I remember around 2009 to 2011, it was constant and I would deal with that on a daily basis. There were times where I wasn’t even thinking about cricket, it was probably the farthest thing in my mind,” he said. Cricket kept my mind off of these thoughts but it became really difficult on non-match days and during the off-season.” Uthappa further said he thought of jumping off the balcony while adding something held him back from doing so. The stylish right-handed batsmen then emerged as one of the most consistent performers in Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders as he became the spine of the team in the top-order. “On days, I would just be sitting there and would think to myself on the count of three, I’m going to run and jump off of the balcony but something kind of just held me back,” he recalled. “...(I) started the process of just understanding myself as a person. I then started to seek outside help to make those changes I wanted to make in my life,” he said. Ace Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is concerned about risking his injury-ravaged back for Test cricket, at the moment, as he said that he understands his “importance” in the limited-overs formats. Hardik last appeared in a Test match back in September 2018 but has been a vital cog in India’s white-ball circuits.&nbsp;

Hardik is of the view that playing Test cricket following his back surgery will be a challenge and is wary of risking his back in the longest format of the game. Hardik further added that playing Test cricket has drained him on many occasions after which he couldn’t perform up to his potential in white-ball cricket as energy is one of his traits. He also recalled how he felt his career was over after being stretchered off in the Asia Cup 2018 match against Pakistan.

"I see myself as a back-up seamer for sure. After my back surgery, I don't know, playing Test cricket right now will be a challenge," the 26-year-old told 'Cricbuzz in Conversation'.

"If I was a Test player and didn't have the game in white-ball cricket, I could go now and risk my back in Tests but I know my importance in white-ball cricket.

Cricket's world body is investigating three former Sri Lankan players over alleged corruption, officials said Wednesday, in the latest scandal to hit the sport in the country.

Sri Lanka Cricket did not name the targets of the probe by the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit, but insisted no current national players were involved.

The board was responding to media reports on comments made by Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The reports said Alahapperuma had hinted current players were being investigated by the ICC for match-fixing. &nbsp;

"What the honourable minister actually mentioned was about an investigation launched by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit against three former Sri Lanka players and not the current national players," the board said in a statement.

The ICC said it would not comment on any active investigation.

Sri Lanka introduced tough penalties for match-fixing and tightened sports betting restrictions in November in a bid to stamp out graft that has tainted the country's cricket team.

Allegations of corruption included claims of match-fixing ahead of a 2018 Test against England.

Betting on sports events in Sri Lanka was already illegal, but the new rules ban Sri Lankans from gambling on overseas contests. They face up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $555,000 for match-fixing.

The new law also bans people with family links to gambling businesses from sitting on cricket's governing body.

The provision was in part to target the former Sri Lanka Cricket president, Thilanga Sumathipala, who was an executive committee member even though his family owns a gambling business.

Sumathipala, a businessman and politician, has repeatedly denied involvement in the gambling side of the family business.&nbsp;

A former sports minister, Harin Fernando, had said cricket in Sri Lanka was riddled with graft "from top to bottom", and that the ICC considered Sri Lanka one of the world's most corrupt nations.

Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilhara Lokuhettige was suspended in 2018 for corruption linked to a limited-over league.

He was the third Sri Lankan charged under the ICC anti-corruption code, following action against former captain and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, and former paceman Nuwan Zoysa.

Jayasuriya was found guilty of failing to cooperate with a match-fixing probe and was banned for two years. Zoysa was suspended for match-fixing.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel on Wednesday named a 14-man Test squad and eleven reserves for their tour of England 2020. The three-match Test series, to be played behind closed doors, is set to commence from July 8, subject to the UK government clearance.&nbsp;

The Windies squad will be tested for COVID-19 this week and is scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom on private charters on June 8.

The West Indies squad will be locked into a “bio-secure” environment where they will live, train and play during the seven weeks of their tour. The reason behind the selection panel naming eleven reserves is to help train the Test squad for the series and back-ups are available in case of any injury.

Three players in Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo and Keemo Paul decline the invitation to be in the squad&nbsp;and travel for the tour due to health fears with Cricket West Indies stating it fully respects their call. COVID-19 continues to leave an impact but good news for everyone associated with the game is it is kicking back to life.&nbsp;

Looking at the squad, Holder continues to be the centre of attraction as the leader with some exciting talents included in the likes of Blackwood and Bonner. Eyelids will closely follow all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall as well after the youngster made a marking impact in the India Test series. Huge responsibility will be on Chase, Dowrich, Hope and Roach to keep the spine of the team impact. Nonetheless, it promises to be an enthralling contest between the two sides following a prolonged break.

“The new cricketing environment will take some getting used to. However, being in England and working together for four weeks before the first Test will give the squad the opportunity to get acclimatized and hopefully, mentally and technically adjusted to the demands of the new environment. Playing in July could be a blessing as the weather is likely to be warmer which will allow the squad more of an opportunity to play its best cricket."

“I think we have a squad that will be very competitive. More than half of the squad were involved in the victorious Test series against England in the Caribbean last year so they will bring that experience, that knowledge and belief with them and marry it to the enthusiasm and vitality of the newcomers. The experience of the players who toured England before in 2017 will also benefit the squad greatly. I expect that the bowling unit will once again provide a serious challenge for England and our batting will have to deliver. England is a tough team when playing in home conditions, however, I think the West Indies has a good chance of retaining the Wisden Trophy. We will have to bat consistently well to do so.”

England vs West Indies: ECB announces schedule and venues for 3-match Test series

England pace bowler Liam Plunkett has revealed he would consider playing for the United States in the future.

Plunkett has been absent from the England team since helping them win the 50-over World Cup for the first time last year.

The 35-year-old was also left out of the 55-man England squad recently asked to return to training following the coronavirus lockdown.

Plunkett's wife is American and they are likely to settle in the United States, prompting him to consider changing his international allegiance if his England prospects do not improve.

"It would be nice be involved in some sort of cricket over there," Plunkett told the BBC.

"My kids might be American, so it would be quite cool to say to them that I played for England and the US."

The United States were given one-day international status in 2019, but Surrey star Plunkett would have to serve a three-year residency period in order to be eligible to play for the country.

"I'm English and I'll always be an Englishman, but if I'm still fit and there's an opportunity to play at the highest level, why would I not take it?" he said.

"If I go over there and end up being a US citizen, or have a green card, I can help the development, especially being someone who has just finished with England. It would be nice to get involved in that."

"It would be nice be involved in some sort of cricket over there," Plunkett told the BBC. "My kids might be American, so it would be quite cool to say to them that I played for England and the US." The United States were given one-day international status in 2019, but Surrey star Plunkett would have to serve a three-year residency period in order to be eligible to play for the country.

Golf legend Tiger Woods on Tuesday called George Floyd’s death a “shocking tragedy” but said violent protests and burning the neighbourhood is not the right way to protest. Not only Woods, but athletes across sports have raised their voice against Floyd’s death and racism with #BlackLivesMatter trending all over social media.

Woods, in his statement, said he had the “utmost respect” for police and recalled the 1992 Los Angeles riots where four policemen were acquitted over the beating of Rodney King.&nbsp;

"My heart goes out to George Floyd, his loved ones and all of us who are hurting right now," Woods said in a statement on Twitter.

"I have always had the utmost respect for our law enforcement. They train so diligently to understand how, when and where to use force.

"This shocking tragedy clearly crossed that line."

#BlackLivesMatter: Tiger Woods, Darren Sammy join growing list sportspersons to raise voice against George Floyd's death

India's fielding coach R Sridhar says a four-phased training module is being prepared for the country's elite cricketers, who can attain peak match fitness with four to six weeks of training once the camp gets the go-ahead to start.

Sridhar, who has been an integral part of the Indian cricket set-up since 2014, spoke to PTI on how the Virat Kohlis, Rohit Sharmas and Jasprit Bumrahs will be training to get ready for the rigours of international cricket when the ball starts rolling again amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think if you have a camp for 4-6 weeks, we can bring them to peak match readiness...Fast bowler needs around 6 weeks, batsmen might take a bit less time," Sridhar said.

"Once we get a date (on start of national camp) from the BCCI and approved by the government of India, we can start working backwards (starting from scratch). The challenge is to proceed in right phases as players can get excited when they play after 14 or 15 weeks.

"It's pertinent that we move in right manner forward. Don't want to look too much ahead," he explained.

Sridhar stressed on workload management and warned that pushing too hard would only cause injuries.

"Initially, we have to give them progressive workload. You can't have a sudden spike in workload which could lead to injuries," said the former Hyderabad left-arm spinner.

The coach then explained how they can go about it.

"First phase, it will be 'low volume-low intensity', followed by 'moderate volume-low intensity', 'high volume-moderate intensity' and then starts 'high volume-high intensity' training. This is how we will go," he said.

And what will constitute low-volume-low intensity training? Sridhar said it would vary.

"May be the fast bowlers will bowl two overs from half or quarter run-up. The deliveries will be bowled at 20 or 30 percent intensity. For a fielder, it will be at the maximum, six throws over 10 metres or 6 throws over 20 metres at 40 to 50 per cent intensity.

"For a batsman, it will start with five to six minutes of batting against moderate pace bowling," he explained.

"For catchers, it will start with semi-soft balls, intensity will be slow and volumes will be less. Then we can slowly pick it up as we cross one phase after another," he said.

It will be around the fourth week that match-intensity training will start and then slowly, the players will enter the zone where they get match ready.

"We can't do same training every day as we start with low volume-low intensity training. Once we get to the fourth week when high volume-high intensity training starts, the hands will get used to hard balls coming at 140km an hour, 130km an hour, that's when match-training will start.

"The sharpest minds will take six weeks to get into Test match mode," the 49-year-old opined.

He agreed that duration of getting into peak match readiness physically and mentally will vary from player to player but the aim for the coaches will be to have everyone on the same page when the camp ends.

"Definitely, there would be different intensity level, (it will vary) from player to player. That's what the sport is all about. Each player has to be different. We understand that. Each one will take slightly different time to get into the peak readiness.

"Someone will do it 4 weeks and some one will take 3 to 4 days more or there may be someone who may take 3-4 sessions more. We respect that. As coaches, our job is to get everybody on the same page at the end of the camp."

As of now, each of the centrally contracted players are following a fitness programme given to them by senior team's Strength and Conditioning coach Nick Webb.

"Each player is being taken care of in terms of where they are, what equipment they have. Fitness programmes are being monitored every week by head Strength and Conditioning coach Nick Webb, and team at NCA as well. They are being monitored on given programmes."

Sridhar has been instrumental in bringing innovation in the Indian team's fielding practice and he does have a "few things on his mind".

"I am still working on it. There are few things on my mind and when we go back and start the camp, basically my mind is working on how to plan the sessions once we get back.

"In a phased manner, we will incorporate a lot of drills, external props would be used to increase their reflexes, reaction drills, deviation methods, all those things, I have a few things and once the camp starts, it will be there for everyone to see," he said.

However, the innovations will be specific to the needs of the elite group.

"We will be more realistic as to what elite level cricketers need, we will make innovations that are pertinent to our plans," he concluded.

We will have four-phased training module for match-readiness: India fielding Coach R Sridhar

Both Rohit and Yuvraj were, in friendly humour, discussing Yuzvendra Chahal’s social media videos and during the conversation, the former India all-rounder allegedly made a casteist remark on Chahal which has irked the Twitterati with hashtag #YuvrajSinghMaafiMango (Apologize Yuvraj Singh in Hindi) heavily trending on the micro-blogging platform.

While talking about Chahal’s obsession with online videos and social media, Yuvraj casually made a casteist slur and the clip has gone viral with the netizens getting offended by the remark and his choice of words.&nbsp;

Earlier, Yuvraj along with veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was targeted on social media for their support to former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi’s foundation to battle the dreaded COVID-19. However, both the Indian icons cut their ties with Afridi after a video of the former Pakistan captain went viral where he was seen making controversial remarks on Kashmir and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, Yuvraj has been pretty active on social media during the lockdown and has, on a regular basis, posted videos while spreading awareness surrounding COVID-19. He has also helped thousands with his foundation YuWeCan during the crisis. Recently, he has been seen engaging in challenge trends with fellow former and active cricketers. &nbsp;

Both Rohit and Yuvraj were, in friendly humour, discussing Yuzvendra Chahal’s social media videos and during the conversation, the former India all-rounder allegedly made a casteist remark on Chahal which has irked the Twitterati with hashtag #YuvrajSinghMaafiMango (Apologize Yuvraj Singh in Hindi) heavily trending on the micro-blogging platform. While talking about Chahal’s obsession with online videos and social media, Yuvraj casually made a casteist slur and the clip has gone viral with the netizens getting offended by the remark and his choice of words. With the world of sports kicking back to life, cricket is also gearing up for resumption following a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. While a major tournament in Indian Premier League (IPL) standing indefinitely suspended, fans are eagerly waiting for an official confirmation surrounding the fate of the cash-rich tournament.&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former India captain, Sourav Ganguly has said with the future still being uncertain, the stakeholders are looking at all options while adding they are still unsure when cricket could resume.&nbsp;

“We can’t say what will happen in the days to come. It is tough to predict. We are looking at all options. We are still not sure when cricket could resume,” Ganguly told Sportskeeda.

The BCCI has received offers from countries like the UAE and Sri Lanka to host the money-spinning tournament there but Ganguly insisted that the Indian board is keen on staging the tournament in India given the situation is under control. The former India captain further said that they are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule while repeating everything depends on the safety of the environment as saving human lives is more important.

“If at all, IPL does happen, we don’t know where it could happen. India would certainly like to host the event, provided the environment is safe. Right now, we are not in a position to say anything. It is too early. We are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule. But it depends on the safety of the environment. Saving human life and breaking the coronavirus chain are more important for all of us,” Ganguly said.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara has said that the Indian pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is the defining pair of modern cricket. Lavishing high praise on the swashbuckling Indian duo, the former Sri Lankan captain said that there is something special about Kohli and Rohit while adding the level of consistency both of them have maintained is incredible.&nbsp;

Kohli, who has an average of 60 across formats including 43 centuries is phenomenal. Whereas Rohit had a blockbuster 2019 while scoring 1490 runs including five tons in the World Cup 2019.&nbsp;

“There is something very special about Virat and Rohit. That fact that rules have changed and maybe run-scoring might have become slightly easier in one-day cricket, but the fact remains that to be so consistent across all formats, he’s so consistent in T20 cricket. It’s incredibly hard, the volume of cricket that India athletes plays,” Sangakkara said on the Cricket Connected Show.

“So, I think you have to have a lot of respect for Rohit and Virat but understand that it’s all because of the players that have gone before and have done all the hard work then as well. So, it’s a knock-on effect, so in every era, there’s always a defining pair and in the modern era, it’s Rohit and Virat for India for sure.”

Putting the pairing of Ganguly and Dravid beside Rohit and Kohli, Sangakkara said the latter is more dangerous due to the precise stroke-making while adding the quality has to be admired as they don’t play unorthodox cricketing strokes in a bid to find runs.&nbsp;

“If you look at Rahul and Dada, both of them are orthodox batsmen. They play beautiful cricket shots and are very technically correct, Dravid may be a little bit more so, but the ability to be as destructive with such rate and precision stroke-making is something that has to be really admired,” the former wicketkeeper-batsman added.

“If you take the modern-day game, India has two of the best players in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who play orthodox cricket but who are just absolutely destructive in any format of the game. You don’t have to muscle the ball or put too much effort or look ugly doing it, they just play good cricket shots and results come.”

The treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Arun Dhumal on Monday said that National Cricket Academy and cricket operations team are working on conducting a training camp for elite cricketers but retracted to put any time frame given the prevailing circumstances.

Even though the central government has been taking gradual steps in opening up the economy, COVID-19 cases continue to witness a sharp spike in India while inching towards the 2-lakh mark.&nbsp;

"The (resumption of) national camp is under review with the cricket operations team and NCA staff working out the possibility to have it as soon as possible. Different states are taking different measures (with regards to relaxation on lockdown), so we will take a call accordingly," Dhumal told PTI.

"Everybody (players) comes from one or the other state. India's prolific limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was on Saturday nominated for the prestigious 'Khel Ratna' award by the BCCI for his stupendous performance in 2019 when he dazzled with five hundreds in the 50-over World Cup.

Rohit's opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma, the most-capped Test cricketer in the current set-up, have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

In the women's section, Deepti Sharma got BCCI nomination for her consistent show across formats in the last three years.

The PTI on May 13 had reported about Dhawan and Deepti's likely nominations for the Arjuna award.

Dhawan was in fact nominated in 2018 alongside Smriti Mandhana but missed out on the award.

As skipper Virat Kohli has got the highest sporting honour, Rohit with his magnificent white-ball record over the years was an automatic choice. Having scored 9115 runs in 224 ODIs with 29 hundreds and 43 fifties.

He also has 2141 runs in 32 Tests with six hundreds and 10 fifties. In 108 T20 Internationals, the 33-year-old has scored 2773 runs with four fifties apart from being ICC's 'Cricketer of the Year'.

"We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said, referring to his three double hundreds in 50-over cricket.

"We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills," Ganguly added.

Secretary Jay Shah termed Rohit as perfect "teamman" who led well in absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli.
"In the last five years, Rohit Sharma has not only raised the bar with his individual performances but has also led the Indian team with distinction in Virat Kohli's absence," Shah was quoted as saying in a BCCI press release.

For 31-year-old Ishant, it was a long wait to earn the nomination as he is the senior-most member in the current Test set-up with 97 Tests under his belt apart from 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is.

Ishant has 297 Test wickets under his belt and by the end of the year is expected to be second pacer in the country after Kapil Dev to complet 100 Test matches.

"Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time," Ganguly commented on his nomination.

The 34-year-old Dhawan holds the record for the fastest Test century on debut and is the only batsman in the world to have won two consecutive golden bats (for most runs) in the ICC Champions Trophy.

He is also the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2000 and 3000 runs in ODIs and second-fastest Indian to score 4000 and 5000 runs in ODIs.

In 136 ODIs, he has scored 5688 runs with 17 hundreds apart from 2315 runs in 34 Tests (7 hundreds) and 1588 runs in 61 T20 Internationals.

The 24-year-old Deepti has already played 54 ODIs and 48 T20 Internationals for the country. She also holds the record of highest individual score by an Indian woman in ODIs - 188. She has so far scored 1840 international runs and taken 117 wickets across two formats.
