Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah reckons cricket should seek an ‘alternative’ for polishing the ball if the gentlemen’s governing body bans the usage of saliva before the resumption of international cricket following the prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to implement a ban on the usage of saliva for the game’s return when they meet after being provided with medical advice that spit poses a COVID-19 transmission risk.

Handshakes, high-fives and hugs are also expected to be out from the game when international cricket resumes with safety protocols in place.

Australia star Steve Smith admitted Monday he has barely picked up a bat since cricket shut down, but said he was in his best physical shape in years.

The 30-year-old, the world's number one Test batsman, has been out of action since March, when Australia's one-day series against New Zealand was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He returned to training with his New South Wales teammates Monday as they await the green light for competitive cricket to start again, targeting a home one-day series against Zimbabwe in August.

"I feel like I've had a pre-season the last couple of months. Got myself into probably the best shape I've been in years. Lots of running, lots of gym stuff," Smith said.

"It's been a couple of months of good hard work and now back with the boys, which is great."

But with no net practice, he has barely picked up his bat.

"I haven't touched a bat, really. A couple of little drills at home but that's about it," said Smith, who has plundered more than 7,000 Test runs.

"I've just tried to switch off from it a bit, which I don't do very often. I was just focusing on getting myself fit and strong and refreshing mentally.

"It's been a bit different but I'm sure in the long run it will probably be a good thing to freshen up after what was a pretty long year-and-a-half since the World Cup and Ashes and summer here.

"I'm refreshed and ready to go," he added.

If the virus had not struck, Smith would have been in the plane to Bangladesh this month for a two-Test series, after playing in the postponed Indian Premier League.

He was one of six Cricket Australia-contracted players in the New South Wales squad who rejoined their state teammates Monday, including David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.

The squad has been divided into four groups who alternate morning and afternoon indoor gym and skills sessions as part of COVID-19 return-to-training protocols.

Smith 'in best shape' despite not picking up bat in months

Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara believes missing Angelo Mathews due to an injury hurt Sri Lanka badly in the summit clash of the 2011 World Cup, which hosts India won after a gap of 28 years.

Having played a key role in their thrilling semifinal win against New Zealand, Mathews was forced out of the final against India at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium by a quadriceps muscle injury.

Reflecting on the six-wicket loss to India, the former Sri Lankan captain said Mathews' injury forced him to opt for a 6-5 combination and was also the reason behind his decision to bat first after winning the toss.

"In that WC final, that's the biggest thing I look back and think...You can talk about drop catches and all of that happens. But the composition of the side and the fact that we were forced to make the change was to me the turning point,"

Sangakkara said in the latest episode of Instagram series 'Reminisce with Ash' hosted by India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten 103 went in vain as India hunted down 275 with Gautam Gambhir setting up the chase with a 97-run knock before skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished off in style, smashing Nuwan Kulasekara for the winning six in his unbeaten 91.

"But for 100 per cent, if Angelo (Mathews) had been fit, I know for sure we would have gone for chase... I'm not sure whether the result would have changed. That balance of team that Mathews would give at seven really was a bonus," the former wicketkeeper batsman said

"If you take our entire campaign, whatever we did Mathews' overs and his ability to bat with the tail and read situations was an incredible bonus to us. He was a young chap who came into the side and from day one he could read situations. It's just instinct, how to up the rate, how to control the bowler, when to accelerate."

During the conversation, Ashwin also asked him about the controversial toss when the coin was flipped twice amid the cacophony of the Wankhede and eventually Sangakkara elected to bat.

"The was crowd was huge. It never happens in Sri Lanka. Once I had this at Eden Gardens when I could not talk to the first slip and then of course at the Wankhede. I remember calling on the toss then Mahi wasn't sure and said did you call tail and I said no I called head.

"The match referee actually said I won the toss, Mahi said he did not. There was a little bit of confusion there and Mahi said let's have another toss of the coin and heads went up again," he said.

"I am not sure whether it was luck that I won. I believe probably India might have batted if I had lost."

The loss prolonged Sri Lanka's wait for another world title as yet again the 1996 champions failed in the final hurdle.

"Whether we win or lose, we have this equilibrium on how to take a win or loss. The smile hides a huge amount of sadness, of disappointment, of thinking of 20 million people back in Sri Lanka who had been waiting for this for so long, since 1996.

"We had an opportunity in 2011, opportunity in 2007, then T20 opportunities in 2009 and 2012," Sangakkara said.

Mathews' absence in 2011 WC final hurt us: Sangakkara

The England and Wales (ECB) on Friday confirmed a 55-man back-to-training squad who have been asked to returning to training as England prepare for the resumption of cricket, behind closed doors, subject to UK government clearance. While there were new faces in the list, one big name – Alex Hales – was missing from the list, days after limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan said it would yet "more time" for the Nottinghamshire batsman to regain trust following a recreational drugs ban before the ICC World Cup 2019.

Hales was dropped from the World Cup squad and missed out on what has been England’s biggest success in their history, winning the quadrennial event. While many have urged the England management to reconsider its stance on Hales, the swashbuckling batsman hasn’t been recalled to the side.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan reacted on Hales’ omission from the side as he took to social media platform Twitter to write: Surprised by @AlexHales1 omission from today’s squads .. He screwed up pre World Cup,was punished correctly & paid the penalty .. but he should have been given a chance now to redeem himself imo !! #Cricket

Hales has been in sensational form in limited-overs cricket and enjoyed a tremendous run with the willow in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, his run-scoring prowess has been once again ignored by the ECB and only time will tell when the 31-year-old returns to the England squad.

The pool of players will give selectors strong options when it comes to selecting squads across formats further down the line, as we move closer to our aim of playing international cricket this summer.”

“We will need to continue to work closely with our medical team and government to ensure that our return to training and play activities are in line with best-practice guidelines. We’re also really grateful for the positive and collaborative response from our county colleagues who are doing a great job at facilitating coaching and support for the players. There has been a lot of talks surrounding India’s hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2021 with the BCCI failing to secure tax exemptions for the showpiece event. Even the ICC has threatened to pull back the tournament from India. A BCCI official has now dismissed all the reports suggesting that India is at risk of losing hosting rights for the T20 World Cup.

Tax exemptions for ICC events are required as per host agreements and the BCCI was supposed to confirm the same by May 18 but the Indian board has asked for an extension citing lockdown rules behind failure to resolve the matter with the Indian government.

Earlier, a report in ESPNCricinfo stated that ICC has threatened to shift the tournament away from India over the tax issues. But BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has now said that there is “no risk” to the tournament and the negotiations are on with the ICC.

India not at risk of losing 2021 T20 World Cup hosting rights: BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal

Cricket Australia chief Kevin Roberts has said that the chances of T20 World Cup being played in October-November was under “very high risk” due to COVID-19 pandemic while adding in case the showpiece event gets postponed, there are potential windows in February-March or October-November, 2021.

“Obviously, we’ve been hopeful all along that it could be staged in October-November but you would have to say there is a very high risk about the prospect of that happening,” Roberts told reporters in a video call on Friday.

On Thursday, in the all-important ICC Board meeting, the global cricket body deferred decisions over T20 World Cup until its next meet on June 10. T20 World Cup schedule under 'very high risk', admits Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts

With the election fever gripping the International Cricket Council (ICC), it was announced by the global cricket body that current president Shashank Manohar is not seeking re-election. As per reports, England’s Colin Graves is a likely successor for the top post and the BCCI will back the Englishman. However, there seems to more about this BCCI-ECB alliance.

According to a report, the BCCI-ECB alliance could open a window for Indian players as for the first time, they may participate in The Hundred tournament next summer.

ECB’s brainchild The Hundred was originally scheduled to be held in July-August this year but was postponed to 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While the new schedule hasn’t been announced, the report stated that it may be tagged along with India’s tour of England next year.

With COVID-19 pandemic leading to financial blows for every cricket board, England will need BCCI’s support to recover from the hit it has suffered due to the crisis.

"We want something that has global relevance, real commercial power, something that the whole game has ownership of and that reduces our reliance on international cricket, which is currently responsible for more than 90 per cent of our revenue," ECB chief executive Tom Harrison told The Cricketer.

A consultancy group – Oakwell Sports Advisory – has suggested that The Hundred must attract Indian players and investors to make the tournament a big hit.

In a report entitled The Impact of Covid-19 on English Cricket, Oakwell states: “The Hundred needs to be able to attract Indian players and subsequently an Indian fanbase, too. The Indian subcontinent constitutes 90% of the 1 billion cricket fans aged 16-69 globally.

"Indian investment into the Hundred, including from IPL team owners, may facilitate the involvement of Indian players in the longer term. In addition to generating revenue out of India, this would be vital in unlocking the south-Asian UK-based fanbase."

This report comes at a time when senior Indian players have been vocal about BCCI not allowing them to go to other countries and participate in cricket leagues and tournaments.

ALSO READ: England captain Morgan wary of Hales return With COVID-19 pandemic leading to financial blows for every cricket board, England will need BCCI’s support to recover from the hit it has suffered due to the crisis. ALSO READ: India set for Border-Gavaskar trophy defense as Cricket Australia locks in Test venues; Tour to commence from December 3 In a report entitled The Impact of Covid-19 on English Cricket, Oakwell states: “The Hundred needs to be able to attract Indian players and subsequently an Indian fanbase, too. The Indian subcontinent constitutes 90% of the 1 billion cricket fans aged 16-69 globally. "Indian investment into the Hundred, including from IPL team owners, may facilitate the involvement of Indian players in the longer term. In addition to generating revenue out of India, this would be vital in unlocking the south-Asian UK-based fanbase." This report comes at a time when senior Indian players have been vocal about BCCI not allowing them to go to other countries and participate in cricket leagues and tournaments. The likes of Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa have said that playing in other leagues will improve the quality of Indian players and will allow them to get accustomed to different conditions.

BCCI may allow Indian cricketers to participate in ECB's 'The Hundred': Report

Alex Hales's hopes of an international recall suffered a setback Wednesday when England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan said it would take yet "more time" for the Nottinghamshire batsman to regain trust following a drugs ban.

Nottinghamshire opener Hales was dropped from the World Cup squad shortly before last year's tournament after it emerged he had tested positive for drugs.

England went on to win the event on home soil in dramatic fashion without him and he has not played international cricket since.

England, however, are set to name a training squad of up to 45 players on Friday.

It is unlikely players will be allowed to move between formats as England seek to cram a full programme of Test and limited overs internationals into a season that will start in July at the earliest after the coronavirus wiped out the initial few months of their home campaign.

That led to suggestions Hales, who has three of England's five highest Twenty20 scores to his credit, was in line for a recall.

But even though England all-rounder Chris Woakes said last week that Hales deserved a "second chance", Morgan appeared to be in a less forgiving mood.

"On the cusp of a World Cup the huge breakdown in trust between him and the players was extremely dramatic," said Morgan, speaking at an online event to mark the 15-year anniversary of cricket charity Chance to Shine, which promotes the game in British state schools.

"I've certainly spoken to Alex and see an avenue for him to come back."

- 'Values' -

Nevertheless, Morgan added: "It's only been 13 months since the incident. Given that it could have derailed a World Cup campaign, I think it will take more time, yes.

"It's not about performance with Alex, he's a fantastic player and it's never been discussed as to whether he's good enough to be in the squad.

"It's about on and off the field and values we adhere to."

Hales might also have been looking at a recall this season as a way of forcing his way back into the squad for the World Twenty20 in Australia this year.

The International Cricket Council insisted earlier Wednesday that press reports the tournament would be postponed due to the pandemic were "inaccurate", while stressing it was examining contingencies.

Morgan, however, was sceptical about the prospects of the October 18-November 15 going ahead as planned given what he forecast would be Australian government reluctance to let overseas teams into a country where there have been only just over a hundred deaths from COVID-19.

"I'd be surprised if it goes ahead," said Morgan.

"My reasons for that would be if you look at how Australia have handled the pandemic, they've shut down the borders pretty early, had a limited number of cases and deaths in comparison to the rest of the world."

Dashing batsman Morgan, 33, hopes to lead England at the T20 World Cup, whenever it is, and at the following 2021 edition in India, despite a longstanding back problem.

And the left-hander hopes form and fitness will allow him to be involved in the defence of England's 50-over title in India in 2023.

"I think a lot of that is going to be dependent on my body," he said. "If my back continues to get better, yes, that could be a chance. If it continues to deteriorate, you can't look past the T20 World Cups."

MS Dhoni last appeared on the cricket field during India’s defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019. Since then, the veteran wicket-keeper has opted to take a sabbatical from the gentlemen’s game. Dhoni was supposed to return in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 but the cash-rich tournament was suspended indefinitely due to COVID-19 pandemic.

While fans are still eagerly waiting to see the former Indian captain in action, #DhoniRetires and #DhoniNeverTires trended on social media platform Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday as fans took a nostalgic trip as they recalled some of the knocks and statistics of Dhoni.

Dhoni’s childhood coach, Keshav Banerjee has now cleared the air surrounding Dhoni’s retirement as he opined that Dhoni will inform the BCCI and call a proper press conference to call his time from the game.

"Dhoni is not the kind of person who will call up people and tell them 'I am retiring'. He knows how to do it. When he will feel it is time, he will inform BCCI and call a proper press conference and do all the things that need to be done. Like he did when he called time on his Test career," Banerjee was quoted as saying by a news agency.

Banerjee further said that Dhoni is absolutely fit and can play the T20 World Cup even it is postponed to 2021.
"You will get to see in the IPL how fit Dhoni still is. He can play the T20 World Cup even if it is postponed. Even if it happens next year," Banerjee said.

ICC vs BCCI: India could lose T20 World Cup 2021 hosting rights over tax exemption issues

Australia's premier pacer Pat Cummins on Wednesday said that the Indian Premier League would be a "great fit" for the October window if the T20 World Cup is postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is speculation that the 13th IPL, which was suspended indefinitely due to the global health crisis, might be conducted in October-November if the T20 World Cup in Australia is postponed.

"If that opens up a window I think the IPL would be a great fit," Cummins, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 15.5 crores, told reporters here.

"You have millions and millions of people watching that tournament around the world... Potentially even more after a long break off cricket. There's a lot of reasons why I would want it to go ahead but the main one is it's a great tournament."

A decision on the T20 World Cup will be taken when the International Cricket Council's all-powerful board holds a tele-conference on Thursday.

Former Australian skippers Allan Border and Ian Chappell were not too happy with the prospect of IPL happening in place of the T20 World Cup.

Border said IPL is just a money grab and shouldn't take precedence over the T20 World cup, while Chappell believes that the well-paid Australian players have an obligation to give priority to the domestic competitions and should snub the IPL.

Confined to the four walls for over two months, Cummins said he is eagarly looking forward to return to play.
"I'm just about ready to get back into it and ready for that next tour," he said.

Cricket Australia (CA) has locked in the hosts for the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series against India later in the year with Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney gearing up to host the Virat Kohli-led outfit.

The four-match Test series between India and Australia will commence at the Gabba, on December 3, where the Baggy Greens haven’t lost a Test since 1988.

Following the series opener, India will head to Adelaide in a bid to end Australia’s unbeaten record in day-night Tests at the iconic venue, as per a report. Interestingly, Perth has been omitted from the list of venues and the series will consist of just one day-night match.

The monumental Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will then host India for the traditional boxing Day Test before both the teams move to Sydney for the New year Test.

As the situation surrounding COVID-19 is improving in Australia, it is possible that the tour could go without the quarantine hub. However, it is yet unclear whether fans will be allowed to witness the much-awaited series.

India have agreed to play the pink-ball Test with Kohli looking to prove that his side can win in Australian conditions.

The last time India toured Australia for a Test series, the Kohli-led side came victorious with a 2-1 series triumph against the Baggy Greens, who were missing Steve Smith and David Warner due to their ban for involvement in sandpaper-gate in South Africa.

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee is of the view that it will be tougher for bowlers to regain the lost rhythm after cricket resumes post lockdown while adding they will need at least eight weeks to get back to optimum fitness for any format of the gentlemen’s game.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recommended a minimum preparation period off eight to 12 weeks for Test bowlers, six weeks for ODIs and five weeks for T20s as cricket gears up to come back to life.

When asked on ‘Cricket Connected’ about the preparation phase for players after the lockdown, Lee, who has played 76 Tests and 221 ODIs for Australia, said that bowlers require six to eight weeks to regain the full pace again after a prolonged break.

"I think it's hard on both batsmen and bowlers."

"Probably takes a bit longer for a bowler to try to find that form, because its normally a six to eight-week period where you get upto full pace again," Lee said.

"Playing one-day cricket or Test cricket, a good eight weeks of leading and bowling at full pace to get into that match fitness. So, it will be a bit tougher for the bowlers," added the pacer.

Earlier on May 21, England’s Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes were among the first ones to have resumed individual training. Whereas, West Indies have also returned to training in a bid to regain their fitness for the three-match Test series against England.

In India, Shardul Thakur was the first BCCI contracted player to resume training on Saturday following a two-month break due to strict lockdown measures in India to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Just a day before the all-important International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, reports surfaced on May 27 (Wednesday) that the T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, has been rescheduled to 2022, opening a window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

WION contacted the ICC to get a clearer picture regarding reports of the postponement of T20 World Cup 2020 and the global cricket body said that no decision has been taken to postpone the showpiece event and the preparations are ongoing for the tournament in Australia later in the year, as per the initial plans.

“ICC has not taken a decision to postpone the T20 World Cup and preparations are ongoing for the event in Australia this year, as per plan. The topic is on the agenda for ICC Board meeting tomorrow and a decision will be made in due course,” said an ICC spokesperson on Wednesday.

As per earlier reports, the T20 World Cup was set to be rescheduled to 2022 with India hosting the T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup in 2021 and 2023 respectively. Notably, no major ICC tournament is scheduled in the year 2022 and it would be interesting to see whether the apex cricket body shifts the tournament by two years. However, a proper call on the tournament is expected following ICC Board meeting on May 28 (Thursday).

International cricket is on the verge of returning back to life with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) planning to host West Indies and Pakistan for a three-match Test series in July and August respectively. While ICC released guidelines in a bid to resume cricket, ECB is looking to create ‘bio-secure bubble’ for players to ensure safety and well-being amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid has questioned the planning by ECB as the batting legend feels it would be impossible to follow the proposed 'bio-secure bubble plans' due to the hectic calendar in the world of cricket.

"It is a bit unrealistic to have things at the level the ECB is talking about. Obviously, the ECB is very keen to conduct these series because they have had no other cricket and it is right in the middle of the season. Even if they are potentially able to create a bubble and manage it in that way, I think it will be impossible for everyone to do it with the kind of calendar that we have, with the travelling that you do on tours and the number of people involved," Dravid said during webinar conducted in support of NGO, YUVA.

Dravid further questioned the fate of a Test series or a tournament if a player tests positive in between a match in the longest format of the game. Dravid said the current rules will see the Public Health Department intervening and putting everyone in quarantine as the stalwart said everyone will need to work out a proper plan so the whole Test match or a tournament don’t get cancelled.

"All of us are hoping that things will evolve with time and get better once we have better medication. In case of the bio-bubble, you do all the testing, the quarantine and then on day two of the Test match, what if one player tests positive? What happens then? The rules, as they stand now, will see the Public Health Department coming in and putting everyone in quarantine,” Dravid asserted.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has “successfully finished” cricket in the last decade and brought the gentlemen’s game down to its knees, former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar said while launching a scathing attack on cricket’s global body.

Akhtar expressed his anguish at batting-friendly conditions in the limited-overs format, which has heavily favoured the batters of late.

"Can I tell you something bluntly? They (ICC) are finishing the cricket. I am openly saying that in last 10 years, ICC has successfully finished cricket, and I would say job well-done guys. Jo socha thaa apne woh kiya (You did what you intended to)," Akhtar told Manjrekar in a chat for ESPNCricinfo.

Akhtar is also of the view that the number of bouncers per over should be increased with two new balls and only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the better part of an ODI match as he rued contests like Sachin Tendulkar vs Shoaib Akhtar has been missing from cricket for a long time.

"I have been saying repeatedly that change bouncer rule (one per over). You have two new balls and four fielders outside. Please ask ICC whether, in the last 10 years, quality of cricket has gone up or gone down. Where are those Sachin versus Shoaib contests?"

On Tendulkar, Akhtar said he never got aggressive against the Master Blaster as they shared immense respect.

"But yes, I would try to outthink him. Like in the 2006 tour of Pakistan, I knew he had tennis elbow problems and he can't hook or pull me, so I bowled a barrage of bouncers to keep him quiet," Akhtar said.

Akthar further said that he should be working in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a bid to produce tearaway fast bowlers for the country.

"People like me should have been in PCB and I would have produced fast bowlers. Fast bowlers should be like leopards which would hunt down its prey.

"I would have produced 12 fast bowlers and prepared them on every aspect, technique, mannerism, studies, diet, what to do with the body.

Sri Lanka's cricket board Tuesday suspended pace bowler Shehan Madushanka from all forms of the game, two days after he was arrested allegedly in possession of heroin.

The right-arm bowler was stopped while driving with another person in a car on Sunday and found to have two grams of the drug, police said.

He took a hat-trick against Bangladesh on his one-day international debut in January 2018. He also played two T20 matches against Bangladesh in 2018, but has not played an international since due to injuries.

Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva said they suspended the 25-year-old pending an internal disciplinary inquiry. He was remanded into custody on Monday.

"We have suspended him with immediate effect and he also cannot take part in any form of the game," de Silva said.

The coronavirus may have struck shortly before the English cricket season was due to start but it threatens to have major implications for the game worldwide.

English officials still believe they can fit a full international programme of three-Test series against both the West Indies and Pakistan, as well as one-day internationals with Australia and Ireland, into a season that won't start until July 1 at the earliest.

But there is now an expectation matches will have to be played behind closed doors, in the short-term at least, as a way of stopping the spread of COVID-19.

That would, however, still allow the England and Wales Cricket Board to honour lucrative broadcast contracts and avoid the nightmare scenario of a completely wiped out season that could cost the organisation £380 million ($463 million).

Below AFP Sport looks at the key issues confronting cricket amid the pandemic.

Will teams go on tour?

-- West Indies and Pakistan, two of crickets less well-off major teams, have both made encouraging noises about touring England, subject to health concerns and appear to ready to factor a 14-day quarantine on arrival in Britain, because of UK government regulations, into their planning.

Matches are set to be played at 'bio-secure' venues such as Hampshire's Ageas Bowl or Old Trafford that have onsite hotels.

"We are trying to get to England early July so that we can get the quarantine done," said Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan.

Australia were meant to play three Twenty20s and three one-day internationals in July but may delay their visit to later in the season after seeing how the West Indies and Pakistan series pan out.

"Obviously we won't jeopardise the safety of the players," Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts told the Sydney Daily Telegraph.

"But the best test of that is the West Indian and Pakistan tours of England before we're due to tour. We hope they go off without a hitch."

What will cricket look like?

-- Even if a rescheduled series between England and the West Indies starts in July, the game itself will look very different.

Not only will there be no spectators but wicket celebrations such as 'high fives' are set to be banned according to International Cricket Council guidelines issued last week.

Umpires have also been instructed to wear gloves to minimise the risk of infection, with bowlers no longer handing their cap and sweater to officials for the same reason.

Another 'interim' measure, which still requires approval at a June vote, would see bowlers banned from using saliva to shine the ball to aid swing, although they will still be allowed to apply their own sweat.

Travel restrictions could see two umpires from a home nation stand in a Test for the first time since 1994 when the ICC started moving towards neutral officials to counter accusations of bias.

The ICC's cricket committee also said last week each team should be awarded an additional DRS review per innings.

Meanwhile, Chris Broad, the only Englishman on the ICC's elite panel of referees, may have to officiate in matches involving his son Stuart, the England fast bowler.

What will happen to the Twenty20 World Cup and IPL?

-- An ICC board meeting on Thursday May 28, could see the men's Twenty20 World Cup, due to held in Australia from October 18, postponed.

Problems over flying in 16 teams to Australia may be reason enough to delay the event by a year.

That would allow the already postponed franchise Indian Premier League, the world's wealthiest T20 competition, to go ahead in its place.

Manoj Badale, a part-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, told the London Daily Telegraph last month: "No IPL (in 2020) would be a big $600 million loss for the global cricket economy."

South African director of cricket Graeme Smith has called for India's Sourav Ganguly, a fellow former Test captain, to become the next ICC chairman.

The Proteas, hard hit by the low value of South Africa's rand, hope to host a three-match T20 series against India in August.

What does this mean for women's cricket?

-- The women's game was riding the crest of a wave after a crowd of over 86,000 in Melbourne saw hosts Australia beat India in the final of the T20 World Cup in March, shortly before global sport went into lockdown.

But Clare Connor, the ECB's managing director of women's cricket, has accepted her side of the game may have to be sacrificed completely in order for more lucrative men's matches to go ahead this season.

But there are hopes a series with South Africa could still take place in September.

"Obviously we won't jeopardise the safety of the players," Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts told the Sydney Daily Telegraph. "But the best test of that is the West Indian and Pakistan tours of England before we're due to tour. We hope they go off without a hitch." What will cricket look like? Manoj Badale, a part-owner of the Rajasthan Royals, told the London Daily Telegraph last month: "No IPL (in 2020) would be a big $600 million loss for the global cricket economy." South African director of cricket Graeme Smith has called for India's Sourav Ganguly, a fellow former Test captain, to become the next ICC chairman.

What now for cricket in 2020? Four key questions

Veteran Indian batsman Suresh Raina has been pretty vocal about the lack of communication between the national selectors and players as the southpaw said that if any selector has problem regarding something then he should say it on his face rather than being silent on the matter.

Raina, who has been out of the national side for a while now, further said that the selectors didn’t give him any reason behind his exclusion following India’s series against England in 2018, which was his last appearance for the Men in Blue.

“I feel somewhere communication should have happened, I’ve been saying that. Senior players have supported me, the selection isn’t in my hands. There have been many great selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar supported the players, Kiran More sir, there were many good selectors who used to communicate with players, be it a junior or senior,” Raina told FanCode.

“A selector has a right to tell face to face, I would prefer that because I’ve learnt it from my father and MS Dhoni. You say it on my face, if there’s a problem, I will solve it,” he added.

Raina clarified that he doesn’t have any issues with senior players like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma but his problem is with selectors as he said that they should be more professional while adding players give their all for the country by working hard and staying away from family and deserve to get answers to these questions.

“Virat told me to improve my fitness, I did it, that’s why he made me play. Rohit always knew my talent. I don’t have any problem with any player, but as a selector, they should be more professional. I am not targetting anyone, I am just saying that sometimes you give so much to the country, you work so hard, stay away from the family, I personally think we should get answers to these questions,” said the left-hander.

Opener Dean Elgar has expressed his interest in becoming South Africa's next Test captain, saying leadership comes naturally to him and he would think "long and hard" if approached for the job.

Du Plessis had resigned as Test captain in February and Quinton de Kock was expected to take the reins but Cricket South Africa ruled him out of the job, saying they don't want to overburden the wicketkeeper-batsman.

With a three-Test series scheduled against the West Indies in July, CSA is still figuring out the Test captaincy conundrum.

"It's definitely not an easy journey being a Test captain but I think leadership is something that comes extremely naturally to me," Elgar said during an interview with Cricket South Africa (CSA) which was released on Monday.

"I've captained teams in the past, right up from school level to provincial level and at franchise level. I enjoyed it extremely and if I was asked to take on the captaincy, it's definitely something I would think long and hard about because it would mean a lot to me."

The left-handed batsman, who had captained the 2006 U-19 World Cup team in Sri Lanka, was the stand-in skipper in the first Test against England in 2017 after regular captain Du Plessis had missed the match due to the birth of his first child.

Elgar had again captained South Africa against Pakistan in January last year when Du Plessis was penalised for slow over-rate in the second Test and was suspended for the third and final Test of the series.

Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj had earlier expressed their desires to captain South Africa.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) chief executive Johns Grave is confident about Windies’ tour of England for a three-match Test series in the month of July as international cricket gears up for resumption following a prolonged break due to COVID-19.

England, who are looking to host West Indies and Pakistan in July and August respectively, in what will the first international series to be played after the break. All international cricket has been suspended since March due to COVID-19 pandemic.

"From where we sit at the moment, based on the information we have, based on the fact that every day there are less and fewer cases in the UK everyone is getting increasingly confident that the tour will happen at some point," ESPNCricinfo quoted Grave as saying.

Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is hoping that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 is successfully held later in the year as the swashbuckling southpaw opined that the tournament brings a lot of positivity. The veteran batsman said that it is crucial for sports to come back to life in India as it improves the environment and mood.

“Hopefully, the IPL will happen. I always think in a positive manner. It will be really good if the tournament goes ahead... the security of everyone will need to be taken care of. If it happens, it will be really good as it brings a lot of positivity,” Dhawan told Sri Lanka allrounder Angelo Mathews in an Instagram live video chat.

“It’s very important that some sports return to improve the environment and mood... it will have a huge impact if the IPL returns.”

Dhawan accepted that playing without any fans in the stadiums would not bring the same feeling in the IPL as they bring their own charm into games but added everyone would be hungry to perform and give their best on the field whenever live cricket returns. Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had said matches without crowd won’t have “same magic” in matches.

“Obviously, we are going to miss playing in front of a huge crowd if tournaments take place behind closed doors, the fans bring their own charm and aura, but at the same time, it would be an opportunity as we have been sitting at our homes for two months now,” the batsman added.

“Once we go back, we all will be very hungry to play and perform for our teams, it is going to be good fun, at the end of the day, when we are playing, it is always a good feeling.”

Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts has said that there is 9 out 10 chance that India will visit Australia for a four-match Test series later in the year 2020 as he downplayed the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Australian cricket board is under immense financial pressure and is desperate to hold the India series after cutting costs due to the pandemic. The India tour of Australia is scheduled to be played between October 2020 and January 2021.

"I guess there's no such thing as certainty in today's world so I can't say 10 (out of 10), but I'm going to say nine out of 10," Roberts was quoted as saying.

"With the variable being, who would know whether we can have crowds? I'd be really surprised if we can't get the Indian tour away.

"But I wouldn't, hand on heart suggest we'll have full crowds from the start. We'll just have to see how that goes," the under-pressure chief executive said.

Roberts further hinted at a white-ball away series against England given the latter successfully host West Indies and Pakistan in the coming months. However, he made it clear that the board won’t jeopardise the safety of the players.

"I think there's some chance we could send a team over," Roberts said.

"Obviously we won't jeopardise the safety of the players, but the best test of that is that the West Indian and Pakistan tours of England before we're due to tour. We hope they go off without a hitch," Roberts said.

Meanwhile, the probability of Australia hosting the T20 World Cup in October-November looks slim given the international travel restrictions in majority of countries and the showpiece event could be shifted to 2021 with India hosting the next edition in 2022.

The ICC on Friday recommended appointing Chief Medical Officers and 14-day pre-match isolation training camps in its radical guidelines for resumption of international cricket after the novel coronavirus hiatus.

The International Cricket Council issued comprehensive guidelines aimed at resumption of cricket around the world while at the same time maintaining the highest safety protocols.

"Consider appointing a Chief Medical Officer and/or Biosafety Official who will be responsible for implementing government regulations and the biosafety plan to resume training and competition," the ICC said in one of the pointers.

Another point was, "Consider the need for a pre-match isolation training camp with health, temperature checks and CV-19 testing - e.G. At least 14 days prior to travel to ensure the team is CV-19 free."

The sport's governing body also recommended developing an appropriate testing plan during training and competition.
All cricket activities are shut since the pandemic struck the world. Even the upcoming T20 World Cup is under threat due to the deadly disease.

England paceman Chris Woakes is glad to be suffering the "normality" of familiar aches and pains following his first bowling net practice since the coronavirus lockdown.

Warwickshire's Woakes was back at his Edgbaston home ground in Birmingham on Thursday for an hour-long stint after being chosen for an individual session.

Batsmen and wicketkeepers are due to return from June 1.

The players are seeking to build up their fitness ahead of a three-Test series at home against the West Indies, which looks set to be rescheduled for July behind closed doors.

"It's what we know, it's what we do," Woakes told a conference call on Friday. "Obviously it's the job, so it was nice to have some form of normality going back to some training."

England have selected 18 bowlers to take part in individual training sessions across seven grounds, with just a physiotherapist in attendance.

Under strict health measures they are not allowed to use changing rooms and must work with a set of balls they alone can pick up.

"It looks a lot different to what we're used to," said the 31-year-old Woakes, an allrounder and veteran of 33 Tests.

"But at the same time, with what's everyone's been through, it was quite nice to be out there and do a bit of training and get the ball back in hand," the World Cup-winner added.

"Obviously not having bowled for two months, there's a few things that are sore. The sides definitely woke up this morning knowing I'd had a bowl yesterday but it was nice to be back out there."

Despite the pandemic, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB ) still plan to stage a full international home season that also includes three Tests against Pakistan as well as limited-overs internationals against Australia and Ireland.

Officials from touring teams have made optimistic remarks about wanting to come to England, subject to health advice, and Woakes said: "First and foremost we just hope there's going to be some form of cricket.

"Obviously it's going to look different, with it being behind closed doors."

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison has warned a cancelled season could cost his organisation £380 million ($463 million).

"We've all seen the projections, that the ECB and the game in general could be in a bit of trouble if we weren't to play any cricket this summer," said Woakes.

"I think for everyone it'll be a bit of a boost, and obviously it'll be a boost for the game."
