South Africa set to host India for three T20Is in August, pending government approval

The CEO of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rahul Johri has said that the board is planning to conduct the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 with Indian and overseas players after the monsoon. The plan depends majorly on the fate of ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15. A decision on the showpiece event is likely to be made when ICC’s board members meet on May 28.

Johri said that the flavour of IPL is best when the world comes and play in India while adding it will be a step-by-step process and things can’t get back to normalcy in a single day. Johri stated players’ decision to participate in IPL 2020 or not would be respected by everyone.

“IPL is one of the greatest engagers. More people watched the IPL last year than those who voted for general elections. For sponsors, cricket is a leader and it will lead the way. The recovery will be sharper than a V-shaped recovery,” said Johri at a webinar.

“The flavour of IPL is that best players in the world come and play, and everyone is committed to maintaining that flow. But it will be a step-by-step process. We can’t expect normalisation tomorrow,” he said.

Johri further said that cricketing activities in India can only be held after monsoons while adding they will be guided by the government guidelines as to when and how cricket can resume in the country. England bowlers are set to report for training on Thursday, leading the way as cricket chiefs step up plans to start a season heavily delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

England bowlers are set to report for training on Thursday, leading the way as cricket chiefs step up plans to start a season heavily delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. The global health crisis has put matches on hold in England until July 1 at the earliest while in other countries the season is already over. Despite the pandemic, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is still planning to stage a full home international programme, starting with a three-Test series against the West Indies, which was originally scheduled for June. The ECB has announced that up to 18 bowlers will be involved from Thursday. England bowlers lead the way as cricketers resume training

Cricket is gearing up to come back to life after a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. But this time, with new rules and regulations for the safety and well-being of the players, support staff and everyone involved in a series or tournament.

ICC’s Cricket Committee has recommended a ban on the usage of saliva for polishing or nurturing the cricket ball and the proposal will now be passed to the ICC Chief Executives' Committee in early June for approval and it is highly expected that the recommendation will get rubber-stamped for the resumption of cricket post-pandemic. The catch for bowlers? Only sweat can be used to polish the ball as the Cricket Committee thought that any further relaxation or variation of the rule might be problematic and didn’t discuss the usage of artificial wax on the ball.

But what does saliva ban means to bowlers?

The art and science behind swing bowling are not simple. Swing bowling is one of the most prized skills for a bowler. The game of cricket excels when a pacer troubles the batsmen with swing bowling with the new ball and it reaches a whole new level when a bowler comes back to reverse swing it with the old ball. But will the latest recommendation hamper the balance between the bat and ball? It is likely.

The science around outswing, inswing and reverse swing bowling are one of the most misunderstood parts of the game. Swing bowlers also live in a narrow path dividing legality and illegality.

Spit-polishing the cricket has been part of the legal method of shining one side of the ball in a bid to create aerodynamic asymmetry which assists in swinging the ball. But it is just one of the factors. The wrist, finger position, the direction and speed of release, the length, the point of release, everything matters and it is one of the toughest skills for a pace bowler to master. Even more so when it comes to moving the ball both ways.

Whenever a cricket fan thinks of a pacer, apart from the speed of the ball, one element which strikes the mind is the bowlers licking the finger and then applying the saliva to one side of the ball only to rub it on the trousers to improve the polish of the ball – but this could be wiped off completely from the cricket book until a vaccine for the dreaded virus is found.

Can sweat completely replace saliva? No. Whether sweat can completely replace saliva is still unclear but one thing is evident that bowlers are going to face some major troubles when the ball gets old and need more liquid to polish the ball properly. Swing bowling is a really crucial part of cricket and there have been instances when bowlers and fielders have been caught red-handed while tampering the ball with external and banned substances. Saliva ban: A fresh headache for swing bowlers

BCCI apex council member Anushman Gaekwad on Wednesday said that the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia, is unlikely to go ahead, opening a window for the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) depending on the situation surrounding COVID-19 in India.

Cricket Australia is set to seek International Cricket Council’s (ICC) permission to use disinfectants of match balls in a bid to reduce the health risk to players as the gentlemen’s game prepares for life post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager Alex Koountouris has said that an overall set of guidelines have been prepared for players to return safely to training, however, competitive cricket is expected to be played only later in the year.

With the ICC’s Cricket Committee recommending a ban on saliva for the players to shine the ball, Kountouris said that testing will soon start on whether disinfecting the ball could minimize health risk.

"Disinfecting the ball is a consideration," Koumtoris was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

...we'd have to speak to the ICC and get permission, there's a lot of things (to consider). And whether it's effective or not. The ball being leather, it's harder to disinfect because it's got little nooks and crevasses.

"...we don't know how infected the ball is going to get and we don't know if it's going to be allowed. But it's absolutely a consideration. Everything is on the table at the moment, everything is being considered."

Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager further said that with England likely to play cricket before Australia, they can check the results there before implementing them in Australia.

"From an Australian cricket perspective, other countries are probably going to play before us," he said.

"We've got a chance to work with the ICC and other countries to see what they come up with and how it works for them. We'll obviously take whatever steps we need to do to make sure we lower the risk."

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn is convinced he had Sachin Tendulkar lbw as he approached the first individual double century in one-day internationals only to be denied by umpire Ian Gould's fear he wouldn't make it back to his hotel if he gave the India great out.

The historic innings took place in front of a lively India home crowd at Gwalior in 2010.

Discussing how tough it was to dismiss Tendulkar with England paceman James Anderson during a Sky Sports cricket podcast, Steyn said: "He scored the first double-hundred in ODI cricket, and it was against us in Gwalior.

"And I actually remember – I think I got him out lbw when he was about 190-odd. Gouldy was the umpire, and he gave him not out.

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn is convinced he had Sachin Tendulkar lbw as he approached the first individual double century in one-day internationals only to be denied by umpire Ian Gould's fear he wouldn't make it back to his hotel if he gave the India great out.

"And I was like, 'why, why did you give him not out!? That's so dead'. And he was like, 'mate, look around –- if I gave him out, I won't make it back to the hotel'."
The option of shifting the upcoming T20 World Cup to 2022 is expected to be put on the table when the ICC Board meets on May 28, a member of world governing body's influential Board told PTI on Friday.

A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the T20 World Cup in the wake of coronavirus pandemic and shifting it may find favours with Cricket Australia, feels the Board member.

The ICC flagship event is scheduled in Australia from October 18 to November 15.

The ICC Board Meeting will be preceded by the Cricket Committee meeting to discuss playing conditions including applying sweat and saliva on the ball.

It is expected that ICC's Events Committee headed by Chris Tetley will present multiple options.

"We are expecting three options from the ICC Events Committee. First option is having World T20 as per schedule with 14-day quarantine with crowd being allowed. The back-up for this option could be tournament in-front of empty stadium. The third option could be shifting the tournament to 2022," a Board member privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The Board meeting will also discuss two-month extension for Chairman Shashank Manohar but primarily the focus will be on deciding the fate of T20 World Cup.

Of late, Cricket Australia and their top players including present and former, have been aggressively campaigning for the Test Series against India to go as scheduled in November-December.

The series is crucial to Cricket Australia's financial health.

"CA wouldn't be too unhappy if the World T20 is shifted to 2022. At the end of the day, ICC is made up of members. If members decide that bilateral series are more important, you can't discount that.

"Also ICC might find its cash flow being hampered but it's a short-term problem. If the tournament happens in 2022, the parent body doesn't lose anything because it's deferment not postponement," the board member said.

The deferment will also mean that the cash-rich Indian Premier League, which is a parallel industry in itself, will get the much-needed window if the COVID-19 pandemic is under control by then. The Indian team can travel to Australia after the IPL.

The Board member also cited a few problems which may lead to deferment of T20 World Cup.

"The costs of quarantine arrangements for 16 teams with support staff plus TV crew will be huge. Add to that if in some of the countries, normalcy doesn't return, whether travelling will be safe by then," he added.

"So it can't be postponed by a few months, say February-March, 2021. It's not a great idea as we have Women's ODI World Cup and the two ICC events should not clash. The Women's World Cup is a much safer bet, there will only be eight teams."

The head coach of the Indian cricket team, Ravi Shastri has said he would prefer to play a bilateral series instead of a full-fledged T20 World Cup after cricket comes to life post-lockdown. As far as live sport is concerned, Shastri has set his priorities clear whenever cricket resumes in the near future.

Shastri said that the last couple of months will be counted as most horrible phase in a sportsperson’s life while adding the ‘only consolation perhaps is that cricketers or sportspersons in general are not the only ones who’ve been left shattered by what’s happening.
The president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly has raised concerns surrounding the financial condition of the board if the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 cannot be conducted this year. The former Indian skipper said that the BCCI will suffer loss to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore if the cash-rich tournament gets cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic, however, Ganguly added that the board will not go in for wage cuts of players and staff.

IPL 2020 was originally scheduled for a March 29 commencement but has been postponed twice following the travel restrictions and lockdown measures in place to curb the spread of the dreaded virus.
