Livid with the International Cricket Council for continuing to put off a decision on the fate of this year's T20 World Cup, the BCCI has accused outgoing chairman Shashank Manohar of deliberately dragging his feet on the issue.

With Cricket Australia's chairman Earl Eddings once again citing his board's inability to host the global event from October 18-November 15, the BCCI feels that the ICC's "delaying tactic" could severely hurt IPL preparations.

"Why is the outgoing ICC chairman (Manohar) creating confusion? If the host cricket board doesn't want to conduct T20 World Cup, why will it take a month to announce the decision? Is he trying to hold BCCI to ransom?" a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The ICC, after a board meeting earlier this month, decided to wait another month and explore more contingency plans before taking a call on the event in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The official feels that a quick decision on postponement would also help member nations plan their bilateral engagements.

"It's just not about the BCCI or the IPL. If ICC announces the postponement during this month, even those member nations whose players are not a part of IPL can plan their bilateral series in that window. The delay in decision-making will hurt everybody," he fumed.

A quick decision by the ICC will ensure that BCCI's (IPL) operations team can start preparing the likely hosts which will certainly include Sri Lanka where there are three grounds -- Premadasa, Pallekele and Hambantota.

Sri Lanka is being seen as more cost effective compared to the UAE and as Sunil Gavaskar said that it's the ideal country to have a September IPL.

The BCCI vs Manohar feud is not new. The Nagpur-based lawyer's frosty relationship with another former BCCI president N Srinivasan is believed to be the root cause of the tensions.

"He has been a former BCCI president, who worked against our interest. BCCI's revenue share was reduced despite the country contributing to ICC's revenue," the official said.
Another veteran official, who has seen Manohar operate in BCCI for years, has a question for the ICC chairman.

"Why do you thrive in confusion? I want to ask Mr Manohar. The current situation is only increasing the confusion, creating a number of dilemmas," he said.

The other question that BCCI mandarins are asking is why the process of nomination for the next chairman has not been officially announced.

"There have been a couple of ICC Board meetings but things like e-mail leaks and investigation gained precedence over announcement of nomination process. If you ask me, I will never be sure till Manohar relinquishes the chairman's post and not seek a third term," the veteran official said.

An ICC chairman can have three terms of two years each.

In fact, an ICC board member fears that delay in nomination process could come in the way of making a unanimous choice.

"Colin Graves is still the front-runner and if Sourav Ganguly is not interested, he will also have BCCI's backing. In case of Ganguly, it will be interesting if he will throw his hat in the ring in case there is no unanimity," said the board member.

Ehsan Mani is considered to be a left-field choice who will certainly not have the BCCI's backing. The name of Debbie Hockley, president of New Zealand Cricket, is also doing the rounds.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal on Wednesday said that with Australia expressing its inability to host the T20 World Cup, there is nothing much left for the ICC to think about the showpiece tournament.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings, who is also a member of ICC Board, on Tuesday said that Australia’s chances of hosting the T20 World Cup in October-November is ‘unrealistic’ and that has left the BCCI scratching its head on why the ICC is delaying the announcement of a postponement.

Given the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, which is scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, gets postponed, a window will pop up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 which currently stands indefinitely suspended.

"When the host nation is showing its inability to host the tournament, there is nothing much left for the ICC. I don't know why they are delaying. It's their call, whenever they want to go ahead with the announcement, they can. But sooner the better for world cricket," Arun Dhumal said.

Eddings had earlier said that hosting T20 World Cup would be ‘very, very difficult’ and they have put a forward a number of options to the ICC.

"I sit on the ICC and we're having meetings as we speak," Eddings said on Tuesday.

"It's a bit of a moving feast at the moment. I'd say it's unlikely, while it hasn't been formally called off this year or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world where most countries are still going through Covid-19 spiking, I think it's unrealistic or would be very, very difficult.

"We've put forward a number of different options to the ICC we're working through at the moment."

The ICC, earlier in June, delayed a final call on the World Cup to July as it wants a “right decision” about the tournament.

Meanwhile, Dhumal emphasizes that the BCCI is definitely looking at September-October window if the World Cup gets postponed.

"We will definitely look for that window in case they confirm they are not hosting. But it has come from the ICC also. These fillers have been coming and accordingly, we are working towards that window," Dhumal said.

The IPL 2020 could even be hosted in either of UAE or Sri Lanka with both the board expressing interest to host the cash-rich tournament.

BCCI's Arun Dhumal: Don't know why ICC is delaying call on T20 World Cup despite Australia expressing inability

Indian bowling attack is now regarded as one of the best in the world and a lot of credit behind the success goes to the bowling coach of the Indian team – Bharat Arun. From rejuvenating Mohammed Shami to bringing the best out of Ishant Sharma, from making Jasprit Bumrah into a world-class bowler across format to nurturing youngsters, Arun has turned the face of the Indian bowling attack.

Arun has been instrumental behind Indian bowling attack’s success in overseas and home conditions. The Men in Blue were never famous for its fast bowling but the scenario has completely changed now. Not only the Indian pacers have taken truckloads of wickets across conditions, but they have also terrorised world-class batsmen with their consistency to push the speedometer beyond the 140 km/h mark.

The Indian bowling unit has been meticulously managed by Arun and the Indian team management with proper workload bringing the best out of the bowlers.

“When we talk about workload management, we are looking at the number of overs a bowler has bowled. But then a bowler can over-exert himself in a game and that is not under your control. So we use the GPS tracker to monitor all his movements on the field,” Arun told Indian women team’s head coach WV Raman in episode three of Inside Out.

You need to find the right balance: Bharat Arun

“For example, a bowler runs around 20 km on the field. And the tracker gives us a lot of data and information about the bowler concerned. By analysing those data, you can manage the workload at training sessions. Basically, you need to find the right balance. And the Indian bowlers have managed to do that so far.

“This is the reason why we are successful as a bowling unit and the bowlers can bowl at 140 km/h regularly,” the Indian bowling coach added.

While Arun has successfully managed to carve out a phenomenal bowling unit, a tougher challenge awaits when international cricket resumes post the prolonged break due to COVID-19. With a new set of regulations coming into play, such as the much-talked-about saliva ban, fans are eagerly waiting to see how Bumrah and Co. cope up with the new norm.

But nonetheless, Arun’s attention to detail and his willingness to give a free hand to bowlers have helped Indian bowlers reach new heights, which has never been witnessed in Indian cricket history.

England’s premier ball manufacturer has some advice for bowlers worried about being unable to generate swing due to a ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball: “Carry a cotton towel.”

Polishing one side with sweat and saliva has been used by fast bowlers to alter the aerodynamics of the ball but the International Cricket Council banned the use of saliva this month to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Bowlers are still free to use sweat but some pacers are worried about not generating enough swing.

Dilip Jajodia, managing director of British Cricket Balls Ltd, which produces the Dukes balls used in test matches in England, says they need not worry.

“The ball has to be right in the first place. Whether you apply saliva or perspiration or whatever, these are small things that help,” Jajodia told Reuters by telephone.

“We have a proper ball with a hand-stitched seam. It’s designed to swing as long as you have the skill.

“And now that ICC has confirmed that you can use perspiration, I don’t see any problem.”

When a player vigorously rubs the Dukes ball against his clothes, it releases the wax in it to permeate through leather and shine the ball, said Jajodia.

His advice for English and West Indian bowlers in their upcoming series is to carry a cotton towel like Barbadian great Malcolm Marshall.

“The great Malcolm Marshall was always seen with a little cotton towel hanging from his waist.

“And you see (England captain) Joe Root in a polyester shirt — polishing and polishing the ball. He’s wasting his time, it does not work.

“You should polish it on a natural material like cotton. Just perspiration and cotton.

“Carry a cotton towel, and you’d be fine.”

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings on Tuesday admitted that hosting T20 World Cup later in the year is “unrealistic” amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir is of the view that Virat Kohli has managed to have a successful T20 career due to his ultimate fitness levels despite not having Chris Gayle’s ‘strength’ or AB de Villiers’ ‘ability’.

Kohli, who has impeccable records in Tests and ODIs, has also left a lasting impact in the shortest format of the game while accumulating 2,794 runs off 82 games at an average of 50.8.

"He (Kohli) was always a very smart cricketer, but then he turned his entire T20 career into a very successful one, just by being supremely fit," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

"Probably because he does not have the strength of Chris Gayle, he doesn't have the ability of AB de Villiers, he probably does not have the ability of Jacques Kallis or Brian Lara," he observed.

The cricketer-turned-politician, Gambhir, further said that the Indian captain heaped praise on Kohli by lauding his fitness levels and the way he runs between the wickets. Kohli has also bagged 5,412 runs in 177 games in IPL, making him one of the most successful batsmen in the league.

"The most important thing is that he runs really well between the wickets, not many people do it," added Gambhir, who was part of both 2007 and 2011 World Cup-winning Indian teams.

"There are very few cricketers in world cricket at this time who can rotate of every ball and that is what Virat Kohli does really well and that's why he's different from the rest," said Gambhir.

The southpaw added that Kohli’s running between the sticks makes him stand out in front of Rohit Sharma or cricketers like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers as he said that is the reason why the Indian captain averages 50 in the shortest format of the game.

"You see Rohit Sharma, probably Rohit Sharma doesn't have that quality which Virat Kohli has to rotate the strike," he said.

"Chris Gayle or AB de Villiers don't have that ability to rotate the strike, especially against spin bowling, but Virat Kohli has that, that's why he averages 50," Gambhir signed off.

BCCI identifies September 26 to November 8 for IPL 2020: Report

Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts has resigned after months of criticism over his handling of the coronavirus shutdown, having alienated players and state associations over cost-cutting measures.

CA chairman Earl Eddings confirmed on Tuesday that Roberts had been replaced by interim CEO Nick Hockley, the chief executive of the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, and the board would begin the search for a long-term replacement.

While Eddings cast Roberts’ departure as a mutual decision, he also said CA wanted a “new leadership style” and the permanent successor would need strong communication skills.

“Kevin and I and the board have worked out over the last three-four months that things do need to change,” Eddings told reporters in a video call.

“Kevin tendered his resignation and we agreed. Now we move on.”

Roberts, who succeeded James Sutherland in October 2018 and had 18 months left on his contract, becomes the third CEO of a major Australian sport to depart following National Rugby League boss Todd Greenberg and Rugby Australia chief Raelene Castle.

Prior to taking the top job at CA, Roberts played a leading role in the board’s unsuccessful attempt to get players to abandon a long-held revenue-sharing agreement in 2017.

Since then he has often spoke of restoring harmony to player relations but things unravelled after CA’s shock decision to furlough 80% of staff in April, citing the need to “proactively” manage the financial impact of COVID-19.

State associations pushed back against proposals to cut their grants while players rejected forward estimates of revenue which underpins their pay two weeks ago.

With coronavirus infections dwindling in Australia, and India having all but confirmed their tour in the home summer — which stands to be CA’s biggest revenue earner in years — Roberts’ doomsday warnings began to look premature.

However, Eddings said domestic cricket was “not out of the woods” and that hosting the 16-team Twenty20 World Cup in October as scheduled was “unrealistic” due to travel restrictions.

He also confirmed CA would announce redundancies as part of a restructure on Wednesday.

“We will still need to reshape the cost base for Australian cricket to be able to prepare us for the future,” he said.

Veteran Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has questioned Team India’s intent during their ICC World Cup 2019 round-robin match against England, where the Men in Blue suffered a crushing defeat to the eventual world champion. While Hafeez didn’t blame the Indian team for losing the match deliberately, the all-rounder said he didn’t see match-winning intent from them.

Had India won the match against England, Pakistan’s chances of making it to the semi-finals would have increased. However, England defeated India by 31 runs to crush Pakistan’s chances to qualify to the knockouts. Hafeez said that as a fan, he didn’t see any match-winning intent and felt bad for the sport.

"Ask any cricket fan, everyone will say intent to play with the spirit was not there. I don't know about the results and who went out because of that. We played good cricket and we were out because of our small mistakes. So I can't blame any result for that," Hafeez said during a video conference organised by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

"But as a fan, if I see the match, I did not see the match-winning intent. I felt bad for the sport. The encounter factor was missing where both teams were playing to win. The mistakes we made, we failed to tick a few boxes in the 2019 World Cup. But as a fan, that is my opinion about that game," he added.

The matter heated up after Ben Stokes, in his book, wrote that he was surprised to see no or little intent from MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav during India’s chase of the 338-run target.

"Arguably, the way MS Dhoni played when he came in with 112 runs needed from 11 overs was even stranger. He appeared more intent on singles than sixes. Even with a dozen balls remaining, India could still have won. There was little or no intent from him (Dhoni) or his partner Kedar Jadhav. To me, while victory is still possible you always go for broke," he had written.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is of the view that Indian Premier League (IPL) could be played in Sri Lanka in September even if T20 World Cup goes ahead as per schedule in October-November. The batting great has said that instead of playing double-headers, the tournament could be played with one-legged matches.

The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in Australia from October 18 to November 19 but there were reports stating that the showpiece event could be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Australian government has allowed crowds up to 10,000 in stadiums from June and it has given a new lifeline to Australia in terms of hosting the event as planned. The ICC will make a decision on the tournament next month.

"If the ICC believes that the World T20 can happen, then having the IPL looks difficult because it could only be held if the World T20 is postponed," the former India captain told a leading Indian news portal.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Kevin Roberts is all set to be axed and replaced by an interim CEO after losing the support of the board members over his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is not clear who will replace Roberts, the board is not content with how Roberts when cricket was shut due to the dreaded virus.

Roberts has been subjected to criticism for his handling of the shutdown with his decision to furlough around 80 per cent of staff at the head office in April. State associations that nominate members to the Cricket Association board have pushed back against proposed cuts their grants whereas the players’ union has called for dispute resolution with the governing body following its rejection of revenue estimates that underpins player payments.

West Indies pacer Kemar Roach has warned Barbadian-born speedster Jofra Archer that there will be no love lost between the two when Windies and England take to the field for the three-match Test series starting July 8.

Archer represented the West Indies at the Under-19 level in three matches before opting to play senior cricket for England, where his father was born. Archer will take on the Windies for the first time when the two teams meet at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton in the first Test. However, Roach said that Archer has been doing a fantastic job for his career.

“Jofra’s made a decision and I think he’s doing a fantastic job for his career. Obviously there’ll be no friendships at the start of this series,” Roach told reporters via Zoom.

“It’s all about winning and playing our cricket. If we come up against Jofra, we’ll devise a fantastic plan to counter it. I’m looking forward to that battle,” Roach said.

“I saw him as a youngster in domestic cricket back home in Barbados. I always thought he was talented and obviously it has shown over the years.

Anti-racism movement and worldwide protests have been on demonstration since the killing of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. Many sportspersons have taken part in the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement with several cricketers also opening up on racial discrimination in the world of sports. While Daren Sammy was one of the first elite cricketers to have opened up about racism in cricket, Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo also weighed in their opinions on the issue.

West Indies’ Tino La Bertram Best recalled facing racial discrimination while he was playing club cricket in England. While Tino said he never experienced it at the international level, he was always targeted in England when he used to play club cricket while adding it was one of the reasons he never liked to play cricket in England.

“I never really experienced it at the international level but for sure playing club cricket in England. I was always targeted there. The umpires never gave decisions in our favour. I used to get guys out but the umpires used to call it a late No-ball. Late as in very late...I knock the stumps out & then suddenly they were like no-ball. I used to be like are you serious, and they were like, do you want to get in a fight? Then leave…So that is one of the reasons why I never really liked to play club cricket in England because of the umpires and other teams,” said Tino during a conversation with Dr Yash Kashikar on his Instagram Live show ‘Say Yash To Sports’.

“They target you because it’s an opportunity for them to target someone they see on the TV. So, when they should be celebrating it like ‘wow, Tino Best is playing in my league’. They got aggressive to the point that they want to beat you out and they cursed at me when I got them out.

“So, I would go and play club cricket anywhere in the world but not in England...it’s a very racial place & stuff,” he added.

Tino, who hit the limelight for his raw pace, further said that players playing club cricket in England wanted to beat him up for bowling fast.

“I know you will hear stories of guys saying that I was the instigator but it’s one black person against every single white person at the ground. So how could I be the instigator?

“I used to come to the ground & bowl quick and guys would have wanted to beat me up for bowling fast. I was always in a situation where if I did not have a strong team they would have probably lynched my ass.

“But, you know I tell everyone Tino La Bertram Best is a different type of black man. I was a free black man. Don’t come to me. If you ever disrespect me. I am going to hurt you,” he further said.

The West Indies quickie further extended his support to Daren Sammy and Chris Gayle for voicing their opinions on racism as the 38-year-old said he was always targeted because he bowled quick and played for the Windies.

“So what Darren (Sammy) & Chris (Gayle) is saying is absolutely true. Also, I would never like to go at people’s ethnicity or race but, I was always targeted because I was fast & I played for West-Indies,” he said while adding "I feel whenever anyone faces racism, call it out, speak about it and don’t fear about the consequences."

“It’s been a very thought-provoking few weeks for everyone. It’s made me do a lot of thinking,” James Anderson said.

“We definitely will have conversations as players about what we can do to make a stand. It’s something that as players and a game we need to be more active with,” he added.

Anderson further said that things can’t keep going the way they are and players should actively seek part to put a full-stop to racism.

“It can’t keep going the way it is. That’s what I’ve been thinking about and is there more that I can do to help as a player,” he said.

Anderson, who is England’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, was unable to recall any instances of racism while playing while adding he was not present when his teammate Jofra Archer was subjected to racial abuse in New Zealand. He questioned whether he has been actively supporting his teammates on things related to racial discrimination.

“It also made me think, have I just turned a blind eye to things? I’ll try and support my team-mates if they do suffer any abuse but have I been active in supporting them?” Anderson added.

An extended squad has been sent by the PCB, including white-ball specialists, in accordance with series SOPs in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic and will remain in England from start to end of the tour.

Highly rated Haider Ali has been named in the squad and it would be a perfect opportunity to hand a debut. Haider has been among runs in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup in Bangladesh, Quaid-e-Azam trophy and ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2020 before having a blistering campaign for Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan Super League 2020.

Sohail Khan, who last played a Test for Pakistan in 2016, has also be named in the extended squad after impressive performances in the domestic circuit.

The Pakistan selection committee further named the likes of Faheem Ashraf, Fawad Alam, Haris Rauf, Imran Khan, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Shoaib Malik and Wahab Riaz.

Bilal Asif, Imran Butt, Musa Khan and Mohammad Nawaz have been named as four reserves in case any of the players fail pre-tour COVID-19 tests, which will be carried out on June 20 and 25.
Both Mohammad Amir and Haris Sohail have pulled out of the England tour citing personal reasons.

Pakistan 29-player squad for England tour:

Openers (4) – Abid Ali (Sindh, Lahore Qalandars), Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lahore Qalandars), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan, Peshawar Zalmi) and Shan Masood (Southern Punjab, Multan Sultans)

Middle-order batsmen (9) – Azhar Ali (captain) (Central Punjab), Babar Azam (Test vice-captain and T20I captain) (Central Punjab, Karachi Kings), Asad Shafiq (Sindh, Multan Sultans), Fawad Alam (Sindh), Haider Ali (Northern, Peshawar Zalmi), Iftikhar Ahmad (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi Kings), Khushdil Shah (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Multan Sultans), Mohammad Hafeez (Southern Punjab, Lahore Qalandars) and Shoaib Malik (Southern Punjab, Peshawar Zalmi)

Wicketkeepers (2) - Mohammad Rizwan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi Kings) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators)

Fast bowlers (10) – Faheem Ashraf (Central Punjab, Islamabad United), Haris Rauf (Northern, Lahore Qalandars), Imran Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Abbas (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Hasnain (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators), Naseem Shah (Central Punjab, Quetta Gladiators), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Northern, Lahore Qalandars), Sohail Khan (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators), Usman Shinwari (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lahore Qalandars) and Wahab Riaz (Southern Punjab, Peshawar Zalmi)

Spinners (4) – Imad Wasim (Northern, Karachi Kings), Kashif Bhatti (Sindh), Shadab Khan (Northern, Islamabad United) and Yasir Shah (Balochistan, Peshawar Zalmi).

Commenting on the squad, chief selector and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said: “The selectors have picked a squad which gives us the best chance of success in England. It was a challenging process as the players have not played for an extended period of time, but nevertheless, with the month that we will have in England and the intense training we will undergo, we are confident we will get the players up to the mark to be ready for the three Tests.

“But the main focus of the selectors has been red-ball cricket, which we will play for nearly two months with the T20Is to be played at the backend of the ICC World Test Championship fixtures.

“The series against England will be challenging as our players have not played any competitive cricket since March, while the home team will come following a series against the West Indies. This means we will have to hit the ground running as soon as we land in England and make the best use of the training sessions and match practice before we enter the first Test.

“The players have also been selected with one eye on the future. I want these players to acquire as much cricket knowledge as possible from the additional backroom staff of Mushtaq Ahmed and Younis Khan that can help them post the England tour.

“Sohail Khan has been recalled to further strengthen our fast bowling department. He had two five-fors when he last played in England in 2016. The selectors also felt he bowled much better in the 2019-20 domestic season than his figures reflected.”

Pakistan 29-player squad for England tour: Openers (4) – Abid Ali (Sindh, Lahore Qalandars), Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lahore Qalandars), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan, Peshawar Zalmi) and Shan Masood (Southern Punjab, Multan Sultans) Middle-order batsmen (9) – Azhar Ali (captain) (Central Punjab), Babar Azam (Test vice-captain and T20I captain) (Central Punjab, Karachi Kings), Asad Shafiq (Sindh, Multan Sultans), Fawad Alam (Sindh), Haider Ali (Northern, Peshawar Zalmi), Iftikhar Ahmad (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi Kings), Khushdil Shah (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Multan Sultans), Mohammad Hafeez (Southern Punjab, Lahore Qalandars) and Shoaib Malik (Southern Punjab, Peshawar Zalmi) Wicketkeepers (2) - Mohammad Rizwan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi Kings) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators) Fast bowlers (10) – Faheem Ashraf (Central Punjab, Islamabad United), Haris Rauf (Northern, Lahore Qalandars), Imran Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mohammad Abbas (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Hasnain (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators), Naseem Shah (Central Punjab, Quetta Gladiators), Shaheen Shah Afridi (Northern, Lahore Qalandars), Sohail Khan (Sindh, Quetta Gladiators), Usman Shinwari (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lahore Qalandars) and Wahab Riaz (Southern Punjab, Peshawar Zalmi) Spinners (4) – Imad Wasim (Northern, Karachi Kings), Kashif Bhatti (Sindh), Shadab Khan (Northern, Islamabad United) and Yasir Shah (Balochistan, Peshawar Zalmi). The selectors also felt he bowled much better in the 2019-20 domestic season than his figures reflected.” Officials: Misbah-ul-Haq – Head Coach Shahid Aslam – Assistant to Head Coach Waqar Younis - Bowling Coach Abdul Majeed – Fielding Coach Yasir Malik – Strength and Conditioning Coach Talha Butt – Team Analyst Cliffe Deacon – Physiotherapist Malang Ali – Masseur Mansoor Rana – Team Manager Col Usman Riffat Anwari (retd) – Team Security Manager Raza Rashid – Team Media Manager Additional team management: Younis Khan – Batting Coach for England tour Mushtaq Ahmed – Spin bowling coach for England tour Dr Sohail Saleem – Team Doctor for England tour

Earlier, three West Indies players in Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo and Keemo Paul declined the invitation to be in the squad and travel for the England tour due to health fears. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has locked September-October window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, subject to postponement of Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, chairman of the tournament Brijesh Patel said on Thursday.

Patel even hinted that the cash-rich tournament could be held overseas as games behind closed doors make location irrelevant.

"We are looking at the September-October window but that is subject to the postponement of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. We will also have to follow the government guidelines at that time," Patel told PTI.

While the Asia Cup is slated to be played in September followed by T20 World Cup in October-November, future of both the tournaments has not been decided by the ICC with the global body expected to take a call on the showpiece event in Australia next month.

The UAE and Sri Lanka have shown interest in hosting IPL 2020 and given the rising cases in India, the option to conduct the league overseas could be opted.

"First preference is India of course but a lot will depend on the situation at that time. Sri Lanka has offered to host it and so has UAE, we will see where we can play. If you are playing without crowds, it doesn't matter where you play," said Patel.

The 2009 edition of IPL was hosted by South Africa due to general elections in India with the 2014 edition being partially held in the UAE in 2014. The BCCI will take a financial hit to the tune of Rs 4000 crore if the IPL is cancelled. Patel added a truncated version of IPL could also be looked into.

India's tour of Sri Lanka called off due to COVID-19 pandemic

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has recommended using a smaller ball to make women’s cricket more attractive, while India’s Jemimah Rodrigues believes a shorter pitch is another innovation worth exploring.

The ball used in women’s cricket is slightly smaller and lighter than the one used in the men’s game but Devine favoured “a little trial and error” and see if that worked.

“I think if we are stuck with traditional formats, we’d be missing out on a lot of new players, new kids, new athletes to the game,” she said in an innovation webinar organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“I’m probably a big fan of looking at a smaller ball, but keeping the pitch the same size, where I think pacers are going to be able to bowl quicker, spinners are going be able to turn the ball more,” the all-rounder added.

Rodrigues saw merit in a shorter pitch to speed up the game and win more fans.

“We can also be open to (a shorter pitch), try it out,” said the 19-year-old.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Board on Wednesday decided to take up the wait and watch policy in relation to the fate of the T20 World Cup 2020 given the rapidly evolving situation surrounding the global pandemic.

The ICC, in a statement, said that it will continue to explore a number of contingency plans related to the future of T20 World Cup 2020 and Women’s World Cup 2021 until next month while planning to execute the events in the scheduled window is ongoing.

The contingency plans process will evaluate the health and safety of everyone and any decision taken will be in the best interests of the sport, members and fans.

ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “The situation surrounding the global pandemic is evolving rapidly and we want to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to make the right decision for the whole sport. The health and well-being of everyone involved is our priority and other considerations fall out from that.

“We will only get one chance to make this decision and it needs to be the right one and as such we will continue to consult with our Members, broadcasters, partners, governments and players and to ensure that we make a well-informed decision.”

The much-talked-about tax issue between ICC and BCCI was also discussed in the meeting and the global body agreed to extend the deadline given to the Indian board to provide a tax solution to December 2020. Tax exemptions are needed for ICC events and the BCCI has failed to provide so for the 2021 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by India. The Indian board even failed to get tax exemption for the T20 World Cup in 2016.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has alleged that he was subjected to racism comments during his stint in England’s league cricket. Chopra, who once played for Marylebone Cricket Club in 2007, said he was called “Paki” during his stint in England.

Chopra, while explaining the incident said, “Paki” term is used as racial abuse if you are browned skinned and anywhere from the Asian subcontinent. He added even when he was standing at the non-striker’s end, they continued to call him Paki.

"We (cricketers) at one point or the other, have been victims of racism. I remember when I used to play league cricket in England, there were two South Africans in one of the opposition teams and both of them really went on an abusive spree," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"Even when I was at the non-striker's end, they were after my life. They were constantly calling me Paki. Now many believe Paki is a short form of Pakistan but that is not true. If you are brown-skinned. If you're anywhere from the Asian subcontinent, this term is used to racially abuse," he added.

Chopra further said that his team backed him during that phase but added it didn’t change the fact that he was subjected to racial slur by two players. The former India batsman then cited Andrew Symonds’ visit to India when the Aussie all-rounder faced monkey chants from the fans.

"You're called Paki, and nobody likes it. The moment you call anybody Paki in England, you know the intention behind it. That's what happened with me at that time. My team stood by me but the truth is the person in front of me was doing it," he recalled.

"Even if you're white-skinned, it happens then as well. When they come to this part of the world, they also subjected to this kind of behaviour," Chopra said.

From ban on saliva to COVID-19 substitution: ICC approves interim regulation changes as international cricket gears up for resumption

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar wants the introduction of the second new ball in Test cricket after every “50 or 55” overs to help pacers on flat pitches as ICC on Wednesday banned the usage of saliva on interim basis, piling more pressure on pacers.

During an interaction with former Australia pacer Brett Lee on Tendulkar’s 100 MB app, the Master Blaster said that using only sweat could pose major challenges for bowler and fielding team and why the usage of saliva was important to shine the ball.

"In Test cricket, suddenly if the surfaces are not good, the standard of playing I feel drops down. And above all the game slows down because, the batters know if I don't play a stupid shot here, no one can get me out and the bowler knows, on this surface I have to be patient," Tendulkar said.

"But why not then to get the game moving, have a new ball after every 45-50 or 55 overs because in ODI cricket we have to play only 50 overs, and you have two new balls there, so literally 25 overs, so that's it," said Tendulkar.

Tendulkar said in a cooler climate, players don’t sweat much and it could become a headache for teams when the ball gets old. He compared it with day-night matches in the limited-overs format.

"So here in Test cricket, if you are not going to allow saliva, and sometimes you won't sweat as much depending on the climate where you are playing, it could be a lot like day/night one-dayers," the maestro said.

"In ODI cricket, bowling when conditions are dry in a day-night match and bowling second when there is a lot of dew on the ground, so on paper the conditions and rules are exactly the same, but on the field, conditions are totally different, it's chalk and cheese," he said.
