Former New Zealand&nbsp;cricket&nbsp;all-rounder Chris Cairns is on life support at a Canberra hospital after recently collapsing with a heart problem, New Zealand media reported on Tuesday.

Cairns, 51, had undergone several operations after suffering an aortic dissection but had not responded to treatment as hoped, Newshub reported. An aortic dissection is a tear in the body's main artery.

Newshub said he would be transferred to a specialist hospital in Sydney.

New Zealand's&nbsp;cricket&nbsp;players' union was unable to provide immediate comment.

A New Zealand&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;spokesman said the board was respecting Cairns' right to privacy and declined to comment on the situation.

Regarded as one of the best all-rounders of his era, Cairns played 62 tests, 215 one-day internationals, and two Twenty20 matches for New Zealand between 1989-2006 before becoming a television pundit.

His father Lance also represented New Zealand in&nbsp;cricket.

Cairns has lived in Canberra for several years after his marriage to Australian Melanie Croser in 2010.

After retiring from international&nbsp;cricket, Cairns was the subject of allegations of match-fixing in India as captain of the Chandigarh Lions in the defunct Indian&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;League (ICL) in 2008.

He denied any wrongdoing and fought several legal battles to clear his name, winning a libel case against former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi in 2012.

In 2015, he was cleared of perjury in relation to the libel case after being charged by Britain's Crown Prosecution Service.

ESPNCricinfo reported today that India Women would leave for Australia on August 29 or 30. A final crew of 30 women&nbsp;cricketers will join the camp today and the five players getting back from the Women's Hundred 2021 will be chosen for the Australian visit.&nbsp;

The whole squad will isolate for about fourteen days in Australia prior to starting off their arrangements. The tour will begin with a three-match ODI series on September 19. Then, India Women will play a notable day/night Test match against Australia Women from September 30 to October 3.&nbsp;

Since India Women have never played a pink-ball Test, the group the board has apparently chosen to have a couple of intra-squad matches with the pink ball before the major event against the Aussies.&nbsp;

India Women have battled a bit in the worldwide field of late. They lost the ODI and T20I series against England Women. Prior to that, they lost the home series against South Africa Women. It will be fascinating to see whether the Indian women's cricket team can make a rebound in Australia.

Team India opener KL Rahul has conceded that consistent downpour and climate-related breaks during the first Test in Nottingham was a challenge to Team India's mission to stay focused.&nbsp;

“It was a challenging pitch, and weather conditions being as they were, going in and going out weren't easy for us to get our focus back. The switch on and switch off was very challenging. So it was great to see that we held our focus, and in the field, I think, our energy was great," he said.&nbsp;

On an individual level, the Nottingham Test was huge for KL Rahul. Playing in his first Test in almost two years, the 29-year-old got the chance and scored an unflinching 84 in the first innings and scored 26 in the subsequent innings.

“From the last 2-3 series, I have been sitting outside. The team was doing really well, and I was very happy to be a part of the team and seeing how we were beating teams in India and then Australia," he said

"So it was great to be part of it, but also very frustrating that opportunities weren’t coming. It was only practise, practise and practise, and as a player, you want to be in the middle and want to challenge yourself, so I kept waiting for my opportunity, so I am very happy that it came in England,” he added.

Virat Kohli communicated his disappointment after the India-England Trent Bridge Test finished in a draw, with the last day getting washed away because of a downpour. He said his side had their chances. Pursuing 209 to go one up in the five-match series, India were 52 for one at stumps on Day 4, requiring 157 additional to win on the last day. With nine wickets in hand, India had their odds of a win, however, that was at last not to be, as there was no play conceivable on the last day.&nbsp;

“We were expecting rain on days three and four, but it chose to come on Day Five. It would have been enjoyable to play and watch, but it’s a shame. This is exactly what we wanted to do -&nbsp;start strong. On Day Five, we knew we had our chances," said the Indian skipper in the post-match presentation.&nbsp;

“We certainly felt like we were on top of the game. Getting that lead was crucial, but it’s a shame we couldn’t finish day five. Getting to fifty overnight was important. It wasn’t just about survival. It was about getting the boundaries when we got the chance,” he added.

India were in a tricky situation in the first innings of the Test, losing four wickets with just 112 on the board after a 97-run opening stand. The lower order suddenly came great and contributed indispensable runs. The last three players contributed 41 runs to help India acquire a key 95-run first-innings lead.&nbsp;

“It’s the hard work of three-odd weeks. They were in the nets regularly, and we got a lead of 95 purely from their efforts. Those runs were gold dust. I think they did a tremendous job with the bat,” he said.

Talking about the combination for the remainder of the series, Virat Kohli said that the Indian team is probably going to continue with four pacers and one spinner in the leftover four Tests.&nbsp;

England captain Joe Root's choice to bat first misfired as India pacers drove by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami set up a great show to bowl out the hosts for 183 runs in the first Test on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Mohammed Shami, who was at his blazing best on the first day of the season of the first Test against England, said that his team was in a decent situation after bowling out the hosts for 183.

"Obviously because 183 as per me we should make a good score and take the lead. We are in a good position because any team you bowl out for 183 at its home is a good performance," he said.

"Now the thing is that we need to focus on the first hour and according to me the ball has not done much, the way we bowled in the day, we bowled in the right length, and accordingly you have got wickets. I think, we need to focus, and doesn’t matter whether it is 183 or 283, you need to focus a bit and need to add runs,”&nbsp;he added.

Mohammed Shami also spoke about Sam Curran's cameo for England. Albeit the all-rounder's unbeaten 37-ball 27 gave Indian fans some unnerving flashbacks from 2018, Shami said his team didn't overthink about the past and just centered on the basics.&nbsp;

"Test matches are all about patience. Forget what has happened in the past, we have to think about the present situation. In my opinion, Test matches are very simple - the more you focus on the basics, the more you'll have the chances to succeed," he said.

"If you overthink, you will tend to leak runs and it's an unnecessary add-on. I think you should focus on the basics and play according to the situation. We work without thinking too much and that's what makes us more successful," he added.

At the Stumps, India were 21-0. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul arranged the eruption of English pacers in the last session.&nbsp;

“Our first innings, the bowling part is over. Our batting part is left. I will say only one thing, you need to play the first hour with caution, because you should not lose your focus, be in control, so the first thing is to achieve this score and then think about the lead. The main focus will be to score 183 and after that whatever comes,” he concluded.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has been an absolute superstar for the Men in Blue. His records and stats are mind-boggling in the world of cricket. However, the prolific batsman has gone through some of the darkest phases in his career.&nbsp;

IN PICS|&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/photos/from-virat-kohli-to-simone-biles-sports-icon-who-battled-with-mental-health-issues-tokyo-olympics-402532" hreflang="en">From Virat Kohli to Simone Biles: Sports icons who battled with mental health issues</a>

One such phase was the forgettable series of England in the year 2014 when the Indian batsman scored just 134 runs from four Tests and averaged just over 13 with scores of 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0, 7, 6 and 20. However, he bounced back in form during the tour of Australia, later that year when he scored 692 runs in four Tests.&nbsp;

"To be honest before that Australia tour, I was treating every foreign tour like, more like an engineering exam, that I have to pass somehow and I have to show people that I can play at this level," Kohli told Dinesh Karthik in an interaction on Sky Sports.

"There I realised that once you are down and out, there was hardly anyone who came to help me, there was hardly anyone who was looking towards me and saying listen let’s work together and you know try to get your game up to speed, everyone was just going after me left, right and centre. So, I was like I am playing to prove these people long, for what, I have got nothing to do with them, they literally have nothing to contribute in my life."

"So, I went back home, I was down for quite a bit, the great thing that happened at that stage was, I realised who is with me, who’s not, things were filtered to an extent that I just got so relaxed when I went back home, I was like okay. I have hit a rock bottom now, no one believes in me, everyone thinks I should not be playing Test cricket, so what can I do, I can just work hard as I can," Kohli elaborated.

He recalled his pep talk with Sachin Tendulkar and how his advice helped him change his play.&nbsp;

"I went into a bubble, I went to Bombay as well, I called Sachin Tendulkar, I asked for his help, I said I want to get my game right, I want to understand what it is like to score runs at this level, my mindset was simple. I went back home and I told myself, listen you can’t play Test cricket to show people that you can play in England, Australia and not get out. If you don’t score it is not a point, you play this game to make your team win. So my mindset was I am going to go to Australia and how I am going to score runs against these guys.

"I wasn’t going out there to survive, and from the time I got back home till the Australia tour, I promise you I was visualizing everyday, when I was working out in the gym, that I am hitting Mitchell Johnson, I am hitting these guys all over the park. Those things came to life eventually because I convinced myself to an extent, when I went there I was absolutely fearless and things just started flowing."

Cricket: Jofra Archer ruled out of T20 World Cup and Ashes due to an elbow injury

Former England cricketer Andrew Strauss featured England's batting misery after a collapse in the last session of Day 1 of the first Test at Trent Bridge.&nbsp;

Choosing to bat first, the hosts were all out for 183 runs. Indian pacers bowled really well to keep the English batting under 200. Jasprit Bumrah got back with four wickets while Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur with two wickets, and Mohammed Siraj also contributed one wicket.&nbsp;

Andrew Strauss said that it was terrible to see England capitulate to the pressure factor.&nbsp;

"I thought that Indian bowlers were outstanding today. Hunted in packs and they were very accurate, they built pressure on England batsmen. It's very hard not to feel dejected if you are an England fan right now," he said.

"Those issues we have had about batting come right to the surface on Day 1 of the series. There's still a lot of cricket obviously to be played in this Test match but the scars are very wide open now," he added.

England top-order yet again neglected to get the work done. While Rory Burns was out for a duck in the first over, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley failed to convert over the beginnings.&nbsp;

Joe Root once again rescued his side with a splendid half-century. However, he needed help from the opposite end with Dan Lawrence and Jos Buttler getting out for ducks.&nbsp;

Former England cricketer Andrew Strauss featured England's batting misery after a collapse in the last session of Day 1 of the first Test at Trent Bridge. Choosing to bat first, the hosts were all out for 183 runs. Indian pacers bowled really well to keep the English batting under 200. Jasprit Bumrah got back with four wickets while Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur with two wickets, and Mohammed Siraj also contributed one wicket. Andrew Strauss said that it was terrible to see England capitulate to the pressure factor. England top-order yet again neglected to get the work done. While Rory Burns was out for a duck in the first over, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley failed to convert over the beginnings. Joe Root once again rescued his side with a splendid half-century. However, he needed help from the opposite end with Dan Lawrence and Jos Buttler getting out for ducks. "It is a recurring thing. We have seen a lot of this over the last 18 months. Former India pacer Ashish Nehra feels if opening batsman Rohit Sharma has a good England tour, the chances of India winning the series against the Three Lions would increase.

India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning Wednesday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.

Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill was ruled out earlier, and Nehra believes that KL Rahul should be given a go as the opening partner to Rohit Sharma.

"The team management earlier said that we are looking at KL Rahul in the middle order. But see, I have seen KL Rahul as an opener in white-ball format. Before Hanuma Vihari, why not KL Rahul? Although I already feel that we have too many people floating around the opening slot, I hope Rohit plays all Tests. If I had to take chance, I would rather go in with KL Rahul as an opener," said Nehra during a virtual press conference organised by a media outlet.&nbsp;

"I really hope Rohit Sharma has a good England tour. If he has a good tour, then we as a team, our chances will be much better. If you can start well, it will keep a strong foundation," he added.

When asked whether Mohammed Siraj should be given a go in the first Test, Nehra said: "Yes, Mohammed Siraj is waiting in the wings but he has to wait for his turn. Everybody knows that Siraj is a very skillful bowler but here you are talking about a guy like Jasprit Bumrah who has done really well in the last five-six years since his arrival. You have to start with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma."

"If you want a fourth fast bowler, we are not there, the captain, coach, and team management can take a call based on who has been bowling well. Whether you want to go with Umesh Yadav or you want to play Siraj. But if you are playing three seamers then you will start with Bumrah, Shami, and Ishant unless there is an injury to any of them," he added.

Nehra also said that he does not agree with the concept that every bowler needs to be able to swing the ball in England to get success. "I don`t agree that you need only swing bowlers in England. Look at somebody like Stuart Broad. Even Jofra Archer is not a swing bowler. But they are England`s main weapons, so a lot depends on how you bowl and it`s not like Bumrah or Shami can`t swing the ball or they need one particular surface to achieve results," said Nehra.

Answering a question of whether India has the best possible opportunity to defeat England in England with Ben Stokes opting out of the series, Nehra said: "See, you cannot say this is the best opportunity. In 2007, India won 1-0 when Rahul Dravid was the captain, but you should not think of it like a now or never situation. England has resources, new players are coming in and they are going through a transition. Ben Stokes is not there, but Buttler is there. You are talking about a team sport, Stokes is an all-rounder, but that can happen to any team. India has to play really well to defeat England in England."

When asked what sort of combination India should opt for in the series against England, Nehra said: "It all depends on the surface you are playing. When you talk about three-four seamers, these discussions just happen when you are playing in England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand. There is more life on the pitches, I agree but it is not like there is swing available on every pitch you play."

India's tour of England will be live on SONY SIX channels from 3.30 pm IST on August 4.&nbsp;

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra feels if opening batsman Rohit Sharma has a good England tour, the chances of India winning the series against the Three Lions would increase. India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning Wednesday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship. Mayank Agarwal has been ruled out of the first Test due to a concussion. Shubman Gill was ruled out earlier, and Nehra believes that KL Rahul should be given a go as the opening partner to Rohit Sharma. ALSO READ | Cricket: Mayank Agarwal ruled out of first Test against England "The team management earlier said that we are looking at KL Rahul in the middle order. But see, I have seen KL Rahul as an opener in white-ball format. Before Hanuma Vihari, why not KL Rahul? Although I already feel that we have too many people floating around the opening slot, I hope Rohit plays all Tests. If I had to take chance, I would rather go in with KL Rahul as an opener," said Nehra during a virtual press conference organised by a media outlet. "I really hope Rohit Sharma has a good England tour. If he has a good tour, then we as a team, our chances will be much better. If you can start well, it will keep a strong foundation," he added. When asked whether Mohammed Siraj should be given a go in the first Test, Nehra said: "Yes, Mohammed Siraj is waiting in the wings but he has to wait for his turn. Everybody knows that Siraj is a very skillful bowler but here you are talking about a guy like Jasprit Bumrah who has done really well in the last five-six years since his arrival. You have to start with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma." ALSO READ: ENGvsIND: Cricket is secondary, just want my friend to be okay, says Joe Root on Ben Stokes "If you want a fourth fast bowler, we are not there, the captain, coach, and team management can take a call based on who has been bowling well. Whether you want to go with Umesh Yadav or you want to play Siraj. But if you are playing three seamers then you will start with Bumrah, Shami, and Ishant unless there is an injury to any of them," he added. Nehra also said that he does not agree with the concept that every bowler needs to be able to swing the ball in England to get success. "I don`t agree that you need only swing bowlers in England. Look at somebody like Stuart Broad. Even Jofra Archer is not a swing bowler. But they are England`s main weapons, so a lot depends on how you bowl and it`s not like Bumrah or Shami can`t swing the ball or they need one particular surface to achieve results," said Nehra. Answering a question of whether India has the best possible opportunity to defeat England in England with Ben Stokes opting out of the series, Nehra said: "See, you cannot say this is the best opportunity. In 2007, India won 1-0 when Rahul Dravid was the captain, but you should not think of it like a now or never situation. England has resources, new players are coming in and they are going through a transition. Ben Stokes is not there, but Buttler is there. The cricket fans are excitedly hanging tight for the eagerly awaited five-match Test series between England and India which gets under from August 4 in Nottingham.&nbsp;

Ahead of the first match, Virat Kohli spoke with former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik during which the Indian skipper uncovered his point of view to play a Test match on English soil. He said it takes 'relentless madness’ and single-minded pursuit of excellence to win a Test series here.

“I’ll answer your second question first, it takes 'relentless madness and the pursuit of excellence' every day on a series of five tests, to tell you that I want to do the hard work and that I want to find myself in tough situations every test match every day," he said.

"And you’re going to be ready for that kind of workload and that kind of mental load," he added.

For the Indian skipper, winning in England is just winning elsewhere and it's about the team culture of taking a stab at victory.&nbsp;

“To answer your first question, for me personally it means nothing more than winning a test match or test series anywhere else in the world. Like I said, to me these things aren’t career anecdotes or career milestones," he said.

“We get on the pitch and we compete and we look to win every test match, that’s what matters most to me, because again, it’s a culture, it’s results,” he added.

“For Indian cricket, it will be a huge thing and we have done it before and we can do it again, but this culture is what is dearest to me and I will do whatever I can, even if you lose a test match," said the Indian skipper.

“I want us to aim for the win and not surrender and try to save a test match on the third or fourth day, that’s just not acceptable to me,” he added

“So for me, as I said, the milestones don’t matter. If I had played for milestones in my career, I probably wouldn’t have half of what I have right now. My state of mind is quite clear and for us, it’s just the pursuit of excellence," he concluded.

Ahead of the England vs India fie-match Test series Ajinkya Rahane addressed a virtual press conference on Monday&nbsp;where he was asked who among bowlers is the best option with the bat and might be top off for Hardik Pandya's absense.&nbsp;

“It's good that they are wanting to bat for at least 10-12 minutes in the nets. See result comes later and what is important is the process and working hard, and contribute as a member of the team. We are hoping for some contributions from our tail-enders,” he said.

“Everyone is different. Hardik what he did in 2018 was different for us. Shardul can bat. You have seen Shardul bat in Australia and he did well in domestic cricket as well. Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Umesh, and Ishant are putting in the effort in the nets. Whatever 20-30 runs we score in end, matters a lot," he added.
