<p>Is there something called an overdose of spyverse? If there is, I am one of the first victims of it. Too many spyverses are in play in pop culture and quite honestly none offer anything new. In Prime Video's latest series<em> Citadel: Honey Bunny&nbsp;</em>– an Indian prequel to Russo Brothers' Citadel featuring Priyanka Chopra – the action sequences are in plenty and almost relentless yet seem repetitive. Raj &amp; DK have spoiled us with <em>The Family Man</em>, a sharp series where wit and action were quick on their heels. In <em>Citadel: Honey Bunny</em> – the lead pair Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Varun Dhawan give their all to the action sequences and perform some awe-inspiring stunts, yet the series lacks the thrills. Mostly.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Set in 1992 and 2000, with a non-linear narrative,<em> Citadel: Honey Bunny</em> begins with Samantha fighting goons double her size. She and her daughter Nadia (Kashvi Majmundar) are on the run from men who have a connection with Honey's&nbsp;(Samantha) past. In the 1990s, Honey, an aspiring actress, had befriended stuntman Bunny on a film set. She is soon inducted into a surveillance agency by 'agent' Bunny. The agency is run by 'Baba' (Kay Kay Menon) and Bunny seems to be the leader of the motley pack of agents, leading a covert operation where a device needs to be stolen from a scientist at a convention in Belgrade.</p>

<p>Honey is initially inducted to act as a Honeytrap, but a quick recap of her past tells us that she is built for bigger things and can be an equally good agent, much like the boys. Even as Baba is weary of including a woman in the team, Honey and Bunny, along with Chakko and Ludo ( the other two agents), set out on a difficult task to acquire the disk, which the rival agency, too, is in need of.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Things changed in the covert operation in Belgrade in 1992, and in 2000, both Honey and Bunny had to pay for their mistakes. Honey, in her family man-esque avatar, will do anything to protect her daughter Nadia, who has been trained for ultimate escape from a young age.</p>

<p>Written and directed by Raj, DK, and Sita Menon, the series is a prelude to the Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden series. The good news is that the Indian version is sharper than the one made by the Russo Brothers. The bad news is that it still isn't a very consistent thriller series. It has its moments, which mostly involve the leading lady Samantha Ruth Prabhu in her feisty avatar, but overall the series appears too repetitive, running low on suspense and thrills.&nbsp;<br />

<p>Varun Dhawan, in his digital debut, tries to do away with his loverboy image to play the tough action hero who is a tough nut to crack. But Dhawan never really shines as Bunny partly because makers concentrate on making Honey the fearless heroine, desperate to keep her daughter away from her past. Samantha's role is way more flexed out than Varun's.&nbsp;The actor plays Bunny, whose character gets very little layers.&nbsp;<br />

Raj &amp; DK's films and series have always had an underlying sly humour running throughout the narrative. The two also manage to give hat tips to Bollywood through their characters. Honey Boney lacks even in these departments where the writing mostly focuses on action and invests less in emotions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The series does have its special moments. The young Kashvi is crackling in her role as the young Nadia – aware of her mother's dangerous past and always eager to be her sidekick. Scenes involving Samantha and Kashvi are warm. Samantha's schemes with a scientist (Thalaivasaai Vijay) with whom she forges a friendship to acquire the disk also perform well.</p>

<p>I do wish Varun and Samantha's chemistry was tapped more – the two feed off each other well even though they share limited screen space.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Citadel: Honey Bunny </em>isn't Raj &amp; DK's best work but it isn't the worst either. It gloriously presents Samantha and the actress delivers&nbsp;her part well. The thriller is inconsistent with its storytelling but still better than the terribly boring original series.</p>

<p>Samantha Ruth Prabhu was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Myositis, which leads to the weakening of muscles, a year ago. The actress shared an extensive post to narrate how her journey has been ever since the diagnosis. Samantha dropped a slew of pictures and videos from the Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade, Serbia. In the caption, she talked about her “forced new normal”, “battles with the body”, diet changes, medicines, as well as professional failures.</p>

<h2><strong>What Samantha Ruth Prabhu said</strong></h2>

<p>"It's been one year since the diagnosis. A year of forced new normal. Many battles with my body... no salt, sugar or grains with a cocktail of meds for the main course, forced shutdowns and forced restarts. A year of seeking meaning, reflection and introspection. Of professional failures too... to make things more interesting. A year of prayers and poojas... not praying for blessings and gifts... but praying to just find strength and peace,” she started her long note.</p>

<p>Samantha stated that this year has taught her that not everything goes your way all the time, and it’s okay if it doesn’t. She said that sometimes it's not about grand successes but "functioning forward" that itself is a win. The actress wrote: "A year that has taught me that not everything goes your way all the time. Is Priyanka Chopra's Citadel worth the hype? | Critically Speaking

<p>Despite the high-stakes behind-the-scenes drama, the jaw-dropping budget of $300 million, and promises of unprecedented television excellence, Amazon Prime Video's <em>Citadel </em>is just... ordinary. Sure enough, there is a sheen to its production quality, and the show has a cinematic, high-budget feel. And the cast, led by Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, is not only stacked but improbably good-looking. But in the end, it is strictly humdrum television with intermittent displays of excellence. Coming from the stables of the Russo Brothers (yes, those of the last two <em>Avengers </em>movies) the series was announced in mid-2018. It was developed by screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who went on to leave the project in 2021 over the same-old reason these exits happen: "creative differences".</p>

<p>David Weil, behind Prime Video's own <em>Hunters </em>and Apple TV+'s <em>Invasion</em>, was brought to the helm. There is no clash of visions visible in the show as such, but the story does not break any new ground in the saturated spy thriller genre. It's worth noting, however, that critics were only given access to the first two episodes, so there's a chance that the remaining season could surprise us with sheer brilliance. But I wouldn't hold my breath.</p>

<h2><strong>What is <em>Citadel </em>about?</strong></h2>

<p><em>Citadel</em>, like so many other contemporary productions with grandiose ambitions, boasts of a global scale. Its "globe-trotting" premise is a trope that has become all too familiar in this era of algorithm-driven entertainment. As though filming in exotic locations would alone make the thing&nbsp;worthwhile. The show carries a distinctly "created-by-algorithm" vibe, something that is becoming depressingly common nowadays.</p>

<p>Madden and Chopra essay Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, respectively. Kane and Sinh are part of Citadel, a spy agency that is unlike any other. Rather than working for a particular government or political agenda, it claims to operate solely for the betterment of all people, regardless of nationality, and wages intelligence and actual warfare on bad actors and organisations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kane and Sinh are old hands whose memories of any association with the organisation were remotely wiped after a confrontation goes awry. As Kane and Sinh take on their latest high-stakes mission, they must grapple with the foggy remnants of their past and face off against the nefarious Manticore, Citadel's antithesis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Stanley Tucci plays Bernard Orlick, a technology expert who serves as an intel provider to Citadel operatives. British actress Lesley Manville essays Dahlia Archer, the British Ambassador to the United States who is secretly a Manticore operative. She dispatches her minions to track down and kill surviving Citadel operatives, including the main two.</p>

<h2><strong>Is <em>Citadel </em>worth a watch?</strong></h2>

<p>The show opens on a train in Italian alps. Kane and Sinh are tracking a target, but when they catch up, it turns out to be a setup. It is a genuinely impressive opening and there is a fabulously well-choreographed fight scene in a cramped lavatory. Such a shame that the rest of what I saw of <em>Citadel </em>was nowhere near as fun. To be sure, the show retains its frenetic pace and bombastic action throughout. The reason it is so loud and fast, I suspect, is that makers hoped most people will then not really care about all the silly dialogue and plot contrivances. "Oh did that person say a stupid thing that does not fit the scene or the character? Here's a cool explosion to take your mind off it!"</p>

<p>Am I joking, you ask? I wish I was.</p>

<p>Once you take out all that eye candy (human or otherwise), <em>Citadel </em>is unable to get past the trappings of the genre. There is little inventiveness and edge that I'd hoped for. It is not the next big thing the promos led you to believe.</p>

<p>It bears repeating: good writers are worth their weight in gold. Throwing hundreds of millions of dollars to random people is not going to pay much in terms of dividends.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The performances, I admit, are solid, which salvages the show from being a complete failure. Priyanka, doing her best impression of a lifelong smoker who just ate a bag of gravel (which is to say, she speaks in a husky voice that she has devised for Hollywood), is gorgeous and is well-cast. Madden is playing pretty much the same role as in <em>Bodyguard</em>, and looks at ease. He is not the best of actors, but these kinds of role suits him. Manville is good too. But Tucci is probably my favourite of the bunch so far — both sardonic and mysterious — appears to be having a lot of fun.</p>

Despite the high-stakes behind-the-scenes drama, the jaw-dropping budget of $300 million, and promises of unprecedented television excellence, Amazon Prime Video's Citadel is just.

Despite the high-stakes behind-the-scenes drama, the jaw-dropping budget of $300 million, and promises of unprecedented television excellence, Amazon Prime Video's Citadel is just... ordinary. Sure enough, there is a sheen to its production quality, and the show has a cinematic, high-budget feel. And the cast, led by Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden, is not only stacked but improbably good-looking. But in the end, it is strictly humdrum television with intermittent displays of excellence. Coming from the stables of the Russo Brothers (yes, those of the last two Avengers movies) the series was announced in mid-2018. It was developed by screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who went on to leave the project in 2021 over the same-old reason these exits happen: "creative differences". David Weil, behind Prime Video's own Hunters and Apple TV+'s Invasion, was brought to the helm. There is no clash of visions visible in the show as such, but the story does not break any new ground in the saturated spy thriller genre. It's worth noting, however, that critics were only given access to the first two episodes, so there's a chance that the remaining season could surprise us with sheer brilliance. But I wouldn't hold my breath. What is Citadel about? Citadel, like so many other contemporary productions with grandiose ambitions, boasts of a global scale. Its "globe-trotting" premise is a trope that has become all too familiar in this era of algorithm-driven entertainment. As though filming in exotic locations would alone make the thing worthwhile. The show carries a distinctly "created-by-algorithm" vibe, something that is becoming depressingly common nowadays. Madden and Chopra essay Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, respectively. Kane and Sinh are part of Citadel, a spy agency that is unlike any other. Rather than working for a particular government or political agenda, it claims to operate solely for the betterment of all people, regardless of nationality, and wages intelligence and actual warfare on bad actors and organisations. Kane and Sinh are old hands whose memories of any association with the organisation were remotely wiped after a confrontation goes awry. As Kane and Sinh take on their latest high-stakes mission, they must grapple with the foggy remnants of their past and face off against the nefarious Manticore, Citadel's antithesis. Stanley Tucci plays Bernard Orlick, a technology expert who serves as an intel provider to Citadel operatives. British actress Lesley Manville essays Dahlia Archer, the British Ambassador to the United States who is secretly a Manticore operative. She dispatches her minions to track down and kill surviving Citadel operatives, including the main two. Is Citadel worth a watch? The show opens on a train in Italian alps. Kane and Sinh are tracking a target, but when they catch up, it turns out to be a setup. It is a genuinely impressive opening and there is a fabulously well-choreographed fight scene in a cramped lavatory. Such a shame that the rest of what I saw of Citadel was nowhere near as fun. To be sure, the show retains its frenetic pace and bombastic action throughout. The reason it is so loud and fast, I suspect, is that makers hoped most people will then not really care about all the silly dialogue and plot contrivances. "Oh did that person say a stupid thing that does not fit the scene or the character? Here's a cool explosion to take your mind off it!" Am I joking, you ask? I wish I was. Once you take out all that eye candy (human or otherwise), Citadel is unable to get past the trappings of the genre. There is little inventiveness and edge that I'd hoped for. It is not the next big thing the promos led you to believe. It bears repeating: good writers are worth their weight in gold. Throwing hundreds of millions of dollars to random people is not going to pay much in terms of dividends. The performances, I admit, are solid, which salvages the show from being a complete failure. Priyanka, doing her best impression of a lifelong smoker who just ate a bag of gravel (which is to say, she speaks in a husky voice that she has devised for Hollywood), is gorgeous and is well-cast. Madden is playing pretty much the same role as in Bodyguard, and looks at ease. He is not the best of actors, but these kinds of role suits him. Manville is good too. But Tucci is probably my favourite of the bunch so far — both sardonic and mysterious — appears to be having a lot of fun. In conclusion If you are fond of unchallenging, occasionally thrilling, and well-produced piece of entertainment, Citadel might not be a bad choice for you. Personally, I would be loath to reward a show or movie of this kind. Perhaps if such things were seen little, the people lording over the various streaming services would actually invest in good writers with a coherent vision and original ideas instead of letting money do all the talking. I want it to be a rom-com because I’ve had a rough day,’” and it renders a very competent story with dialogue that mimics your voice,” Russo said. “It mimics your voice, and suddenly now you have a rom-com starring you that’s 90 minutes long. So you can curate your story specifically to you.”<br />

“Make me Doctor Strange,” Russo joked and added that the concept was a possibility.&nbsp;While it sounds scary Russo asserted that the future is coming “whether we want it or not.”&nbsp;</p>

Citadel becomes second-most expensive show, was made on a whopping budget of $300 million

<p>The Asia Pacific Premiere of the spy-thriller series, Citadel was a starry affair.&nbsp;The landmark, high-stakes drama is executive produced by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO and showrunner David Weil, and stars Richard Madden, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, with Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville.</p>

<p>Ahead of its launch on Prime Video on 28 April, the streaming service hosted a special premiere of the series in the city last night, kickstarting the global tour with Mumbai as its first stop. It will be followed by Rome, and London.</p>

The two stars appeared together in Mumbai on Monday for a press meet and Madden got candid about his desire to work in India.&nbsp;<br />

<em>The Game Of Thrones</em> star was asked if he would be interested to work in Bollywood if he got an offer. Madden answered, "Absolutely, India makes more movies than any other country in the world and has an incredible amount of talent. I would be honoured to work here. I would like to do something comedic because I have not done it."<br />

<p>In India to promote her new web series <em>Citadel,</em> Priyanka Chopra on Monday addressed the elephant in the room at a press meet and spoke about her recent revelations about Bollywood. Chopra appeared on Dax Shepard's podcast last week where she for the first time revealed that her beef with certain people made her leave Bollywood and look for work opportunities in the West.&nbsp;<br />

On Monday, when Priyanka was asked why she chose to speak up after so many years, the actress revealed that it was easy for her to talk about it now as she had moved on and made peace with the matter.<br />

In Dax Shepherd's podcast Armchair Expert, Priyanka said she was driven out of Bollywood as she was tired of politics and had beef with some people, without taking any names. In the same podcast, she also talked about being in a ‘tumultuous relationship’ which is when she met her now husband Nick Jonas.</p>
