Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was left frustrated after his team failed to pick the two points in the Indian Premier League (IPL) contest against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday, April 12. According to Dhoni, the lack of strike rotation in the middle overs by the middle order was one of the primary reasons for his team’s three-run defeat. The win was RR’s first in Chennai in 15 years while they also reached the top of the table in the IPL standings.

"I think [we lost it] in the middle [overs while batting], we needed a bit more strike rotation," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.

Dhoni also highlighted the use of spinners by Sanju Samson as he felt the pitch had not much help. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal both scalped two wickets each putting CSK on the back foot in the middle overs, which proved to be the difference-maker in the death overs.&nbsp;

"I don't think there was a lot [of help] for the spinners. Yes, they have experienced spinners, so they bowled very well. They were bowling the right length, but I felt in that period you have [we had] too many dot balls.

Asked to chase 176 runs, CSK made a poor start as Ruturaj Gaikwad (8) was dismissed early in the innings, but then useful knocks from Ajinkya Rahane (31) and Devon Conway (50)&nbsp; saw CSK mount a good chase. However, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin quickly turned the contest on its head as they scalped two wickets each.

Harbhajan further added to his thoughts about MI's batting and said, "Tilak Varma was definitely the hero in the first match but once Tilak Varma got out today, it seemed no one had the awareness. Tim David was there but he only knows how to play big shots, he doesn't know how to take the game forward. The singles and doubles that Tilak took were good."

CSK though, lost the first wicket early in the chase, but Ajinkya Rahane scored a quickfire 50 to make small work of the target. Chennai registered their second win on the trot after beating Mumbai by seven wickets.

The crowd at the Chepauk gave a rousing reception to the Dhoni-led CSK brigade in their memorable homecoming after 2019. Asked to bat first, Chennai rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 57, Devon Conway's 47, Shivam Dube's 16-ball 27, Moeen Ali's 13-ball 19, Ambati Rayudu's 14-ball 27* and Dhoni's 3-ball 12 to post 217 for 7. Chennai Super Kings returned to their home ground in some style as they won the 400+ run fest against Lucknow Super Giants by 12 runs. Batting first, Chennai notched up 217/7 in their 20 overs and held off LSG on 205/7.

CSK, however, didn't have a smooth win, thanks to a brilliant start by LSG openers KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers. The LSG opening stand was also assisted by some ordinary bowling by CSK pacers during which the bowled a lot of extra balls as well.&nbsp;

Skipper MSD was clearly not amused by the show put on by his fast bowlers and made his irritation clear during the post-match presentation.

The former India skipper, however, was full of praise about the wicket and said that he hopes his team continue to play like this in the upcoming matches as well.

"It was a terrific game, high-scoring game. All of us were thinking how the wicket will be. We had that doubt. It was a high-scoring game. Overall I think it was a perfect first game that happened and it was a full house for the first game in 5 or 6 years since we've been here. I thought it will be much slower. It was a wicket where you could score runs but overall it got a bit slower. We'll have to see how it plays over the next six games at home but hopefully we can score here," Dhoni said.

Dhoni, who came into bat in the last, hit two consecutive sixes off LSG's Mark Wood to thrill the Cheapuk crowd. With those two sixes, MSD also became the seventh cricketer in IPL to enter the 5000-run club.

In the opening contest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 16 against Gujarat Titans, Dhoni went vintage to roll back the clock and produced a master show with the bat to win the hearts of people in Ahmedabad.

On the third ball of the 20th over, 41-year-old Dhoni went guns blazing as he scored a monstrous six. Joshua Little, previously a net bowler at CSK was shown no mercy by the former India skipper as he rolled his sleeves to produce a masterclass with the bat. The six was a trademark shot while he followed that six with a boundary to compile the misery on Little.

Dhoni ended with an unbeaten 14 off 7 deliveries while Mitchell Santner scored 1 to steer CSK to a total of 178/7. On the flip side, Ruturaj Gaikwad's 92 of 50 balls and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's small cameo helped Chennai Super Kings set a 179-run target for Gujarat Titans in the opening match of IPL 2023 being played at the Narendra Modi stadium here.
