MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerged on top of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by eight runs in match 24 of the IPL 2023 edition on Monday evening (April 17), at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. After being asked to bat first, the four-time champions Chennai rode on Devon Conway's 83, Ajinkya Rahane's 37 and Shivam Dube's 27-ball 52 to post a mammoth 226 for 6 and defended the target after restricting the Faf du Plessis-led RCB camp for 218 for 8.

While the win puts CSK in the top three, at the third spot, it wasn't an easy victory by any means. Despite posting 226 for 6 on board, the CSK bowlers were taken to the cleaners by the RCB batters -- mainly Glenn Maxwell (36-ball 76) and captain Du Plessis (33-ball 62) -- before some tidy overs towards the end enabled the Yellow Army to clinch the match. Chennai bowlers leaked runs left, right and centre while the fielders were very sloppy, however, Dhoni's calm and composed leadership, some good bowling changes and few tidy overs propelled CSK to turn the tides and end as the winners.

After CSK's win, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar explained how CSK weathered the ‘Faf-Maxwell’ storm in the Southern Derby, held in Bengaluru, and hailed Dhoni's cool leadership style. "Players don't feel much pressure when MS Dhoni is leading the side. He's utterly cool and that helps. He stays in the moment and never gets carried away. Yes, he gives them some stares once they drop catches or miss field but he never puts them under pressure. That is the reason why CSK manage to brave crunch situations more often than not," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Speaking to Star Sports, Jadeja revealed CSK’s winning-psychology and how by working on it they found so much success over the years. An integral part of the yellow army now, the left-handed Jadeja said CSK treat everyone with equal respect - be it the senior-most player or an upcoming U-19 player. He added that no one in the camp puts pressure on anyone and will never let a player feel low, regardless of his performance.

"CSK management and the owners never put any pressure on any players. Even now, after 11 years with CSK, they have the same attitude and approach. They'll never make you feel low even when you aren't performing well," Jadeja told Star Sports. "There is no senior and junior kind of thing there. Even any youngster from U19 will get the same respect and treatment as other senior players. No pressure at all. No biases among any players, whether they are playing or not," Jaddu added.

'They know how to get out of tough situations': Sunil Gavaskar on CSK, lauds MS Dhoni's captaincy

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni was left frustrated after his team failed to pick the two points in the Indian Premier League (IPL) contest against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday, April 12. According to Dhoni, the lack of strike rotation in the middle overs by the middle order was one of the primary reasons for his team’s three-run defeat. The win was RR’s first in Chennai in 15 years while they also reached the top of the table in the IPL standings.

"I think [we lost it] in the middle [overs while batting], we needed a bit more strike rotation," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.

Dhoni also highlighted the use of spinners by Sanju Samson as he felt the pitch had not much help. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal both scalped two wickets each putting CSK on the back foot in the middle overs, which proved to be the difference-maker in the death overs.

"I don't think there was a lot [of help] for the spinners. Yes, they have experienced spinners, so they bowled very well. They were bowling the right length, but I felt in that period you have [we had] too many dot balls.

"If the wicket is slow, if it's stopping and turning, then I can understand, but with the set batsman and the new batsman going in, I don't think it was that difficult. So I think the ownership needs to come from the batsmen."

Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) Sandeep Sharma held his nerves in yet another last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, April 12. Needing 21 runs to win from the final over, MS Dhoni playing in his 200th match as a CSK’s skipper failed to take his team home despite playing a cameo inning of 32 runs off 17 deliveries.

MS Dhoni almost guides CSK to win

Asked to chase 176 runs, CSK made a poor start as Ruturaj Gaikwad (8) was dismissed early in the innings, but then useful knocks from Ajinkya Rahane (31) and Devon Conway (50) saw CSK mount a good chase. However, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin quickly turned the contest on its head as they scalped two wickets each.

Playing catch-up CSK lost way in the middle with quick wickets of Moeen Ali and Shivam Dube. In the end, it was Sandeep Sharma who held his nerves against MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja (25 unbeaten) to register RR’s first win in Chennai in 15 years.

So I think the ownership needs to come from the batsmen." Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) Sandeep Sharma held his nerves in yet another last-ball thriller in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, April 12. Needing 21 runs to win from the final over, MS Dhoni playing in his 200th match as a CSK’s skipper failed to take his team home despite playing a cameo inning of 32 runs off 17 deliveries. IPL 2023: Dhoni frustrated with middle-order batting approach after RR pull off first Chepauk win in 15 years

Rajasthan Royals (RR) man of the moment, Sandeep Sharma has revealed his magic mantra after leading his side in an epic win against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, April 12. Needing to defend 21 runs in the final over, the contest went to the final ball where Sandeep held his nerves despite facing a mercurial MS Dhoni. The RR pacer defended five runs on the final ball as the visitors won by three runs.

“I just wanted to execute my yorkers. I was bowling good yorker in the nets. Was trying to bowl the yorker on the heel but I missed. So I went around the wicket, and the results came,” Sharma said in his post-match interview.

Speaking on Ravindra Jadeja, who was the other batter along with MS Dhoni, he was quick to point out the game plan.

“I wanted to take the ball out of his reach,” he stated.

Things initially did not go right for Sandeep in the final over when he was dispatched for two sixes by Dhoni, but then he got the execution of the yorkers right. Needing five runs to off the final ball, Sandeep kept Dhoni silent while he was playing in his 200th match as the CSK skipper. Dhoni managed only a single as RR won by three runs to secure their first win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in 15 years.

“To Mahi bhai, I wanted to change the angle and bowl outside off,” Sharma added.

IPL 2023: Sandeep Sharma reveals MAGIC MANTRA in last-gasp CSK win, says 'I wanted to change the angle'

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their home game to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition on Wednesday (April 12) in Chennai. Asking Sanju Samson-led RR to bat first, Chennai restricted the one-time winners to 175 for 8 after Jos Buttler's 52 and contributions from Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, and Shimron Hetymer.

In reply, CSK was restricted to 172 for 6 despite a late flourish from MS Dhoni (32 not out off 17 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja's 15-ball 25*. Needing 54 off 18 balls, after a flurry of wickets fell in the middle overs, Chennai took the game deep courtesy of Dhoni and Jadeja's big hits but couldn't take their side past the finish line as they fell short by three runs. After the match, Matthew Hayden -- former Australia and CSK opener -- raised fitness concerns for Dhoni as he observed him to be having some issues in running between wickets.

In a video shared by CSK's official Twitter handle, Dhoni was seen struggling to walk properly as he entered the dressing room. Here's the clip:

IPL 2023: CSK fans, look away! MS Dhoni walks in pain after Chennai's RR loss - Watch

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is churning out nail-biting contests with each passing day. The ongoing season has already become a hit and is on course for more success before its conclusion on May 28. Soon after the end of IPL 2023, Rohit Sharma-led Team India will reassemble and leave for the United Kingdom to lock horns with Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final for the 2021-23 cycle.

After missing out on winning the inaugural WTC cycle, and losing to New Zealand in 2021, India will hope to make the most of this opportunity and end their 10-year-long ICC-title drought. While Indian players have been asked to manage their workload efficiently in IPL 2023, there have already been some injury concerns ahead of the WTC summit clash, on June 07 at The Oval, London. While Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant have already been ruled out, Shreyas Iyer is also out of contention.

With Iyer's back injury resurfacing during India-Australia home Tests, he is out of IPL 2023 and will also miss the high-voltage WTC clash. Thus, India have some tough calls to smartly pack their middle order for the marquee clash, keeping the English conditions in mind.

Many experts have chipped in the idea of KL Rahul to open with Rohit as the duo was a successful pair during India's four Tests in England in the 2021 English summer. However, Rahul's low returns -- in Australia Tests and IPL 2023 so far -- aren't unknown. If the team management still persists with Rahul-Rohit as their openers, this could drop in-form batter Shubman Gill at No. 5 (an alien spot for him); filling in for Iyer. Nonetheless, Ajinkya Rahane's two good outings for his new franchise, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL season have led to many ardent Indian cricket fans and former cricketers suggesting his inclusion.

Rahane for WTC final?

It is to be noted that Rahane has made scores of 61 (27) and 31 (19), striking at over 200 (225.92) and 150 (163.15) respectively, so far in his two innings for CSK. While many can say that IPL isn't an ideal platform for any batter's return in Tests, that too after two-long years, Rahane has had a good domestic run as well.

Rahane scored 634 runs (with a best of 204) in seven matches, at an average of 57.63, with a hundred and two fifties for Mumbai in the 2022/23 Ranji Trophy season. While he could have gone for a County stint (like Cheteshwar Pujara), rather than plying his trade in the IPL, a dearth of middle-order batters with Iyer and Pant's injury has brightened the chances for Rahane.

What are the numbers for Rahane?

Now, let's focus on Rahane's numbers in Tests, particularly in England. The right-hander has scored 4,931 Test runs in 82 Tests, with 12 hundreds and 25 half-centuries. In England, he has amassed 729 runs in 15 Tests, at a woeful average of 26.03, with a solitary hundred and five fifties. He has two memorable knocks in English conditions; 103 (Lord's Test, 2014) and 81 (Trent Bridge, 2018).

Meanwhile, Rahane has a total of 1,090 runs versus Australia at an average of 37.58 with two centuries and five half-centuries (only one at home). In addition, he has scored 884 of those in Australia, which includes both his tons.

Above all, it is Rahane's experience that the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team will bank up on if he earns a recall. A stage as big as a WTC final and an opposition as formidable as Pat Cummins-led Australia (against whom he scored his last ton -- a memorable 112) can perfectly motivate a senior pro like Rahane.

Given, Rahane has already tasted failure with the Virat Kohli-led Indian side in the inaugural WTC final, where he scored 49 and 15, the 34-year-old will be highly charged in possibly his last ICC final. In the twilight of his career, it goes without saying that the Mumbaikar will be desperate to make the most of any chance presented to him.

Fire to perform is still burning strong!

After his spirited 27-ball 61 in CSK debut, versus Mumbai Indians (MI), at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, a determined Rahane subtly reminded the critics that it is still early to write him off. At the post-match presentation, he said, "I was just told to focus on my strengths and focus on preparation. I love playing at the Wankhede, I know the ground well. Have not played a Test here, yet." He even smiled when on-air commentators praised his usage of 'yet'.

Later, at the post-match presser, he stated, "Still, a long way to go [WTC final]. Today, I was not sure about my place in the eleven, (and) got to know just before the toss. For me, it is about playing one game at a time and staying in the moment. "Anything can happen. I will never give up. For me it is about playing with enjoyment and passion," Rahane added.

For now, Rahane needs to continue to tick the basics and add runs for CSK. If he continues in the same manner, the batting maestro -- and also a highly acclaimed slip fielder -- might be in India's scheme of things to star in the playing XI for the WTC final.

Explained: Why Team India may turn back to Ajinkya Rahane for WTC final

Injury concerns continue to pile up for Chennai Super Kings as their foreign seamer Sisanda Magala got ruled out for two weeks, coach Stephen Fleming confirmed. Against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday night, Magala left the field with a split webbing in his hand and thus didn't bowl his remaining two overs.

It comes a dent for the injury-filled CSK that already has few of their players, mostly the fast bowlers, down and out. While CSK's most-expensive recruit Deepak Chahar is out for two weeks due to a hamstring injury, MS Dhoni's CSK is also without Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary and overseas seamer Kyle Jamieson, who got replaced by Magala ahead of the start of the season.

Owing to the unavailability of several first-team players, CSK brought in left-arm seamer Akash Singh into the XI against Rajasthan, who returned with figures of two for 40 in four overs. Tushar Deshpande, who suffered the wrath for leaking runs in the previous games, also picked up two wickets, while Magala conceded just 14 runs in two overs.

Speaking to the media after the match, Fleming told reporters, “For us again, it's losing another player, that's two games in a row and we're already pretty thin, so we'd like it (injuries) to stop.”

Lamenting over the untimely and unfortunate turn of events relating to injuries to fast bowlers, Fleming said the team is already operating on thin resources.

"Magala's hand was split, unfortunately, so he was unable to bowl those last two overs. And same with Deepak Chahar in the last game, so we're operating on pretty thin resources," Fleming said.

Adding further on the only overseas option available in Sri Lanka's Matheesha Pathirana, who got tested for Covid-19 during the New Zealand tour, Fleming said he has recovered and will remain in contention for selection.

“Chahar is out for a few weeks. Magala is out for two weeks. Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana tested positive for Covid-19 in NZ and has recovered and is available for selection now. We did not want to rush him back for this game,” Fleming added.

IPL 2023: Injury concerns pile up for CSK as Sisanda Magala ruled out for two weeks, confirms coach Fleming

Match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition saw the Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) hold their nerves to beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three runs in front of their home crowd, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday (April 12). In a game that went down to the wire, RR pacer Sandeep Sharma defended five off the last ball, with a perfect yorker to MS Dhoni as CSK fell short by a whisker.

Being asked to bat first, RR rode on Jos Buttler's 52, Devdutt Padikkal's 38, and 30 apiece from R Ashwin and Shimron Hetymer to post 175 for 8. In reply, CSK looked down and out needing 54 off the last 18 deliveries with Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) injury woes could get worse after skipper MS Dhoni’s knee issue could be the latest headache for the team management. Dhoni, having failed to take his team over the line in a thrilling last-over finish against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League, is struggling with a knee issue. The legendary star, playing in his 200th match as skipper of CSK, scored 32 off 17 but failed to hit a six on the last ball against Sandeep Sharma on Wednesday, April 12.

"He is nursing a knee injury, which you can see in some of his movement, which is hindering him somewhat," Fleming said after the game.

"But still what you saw today is a great player for us. His fitness has always been very professional."

If Dhoni fails to recover from the knee issue which has troubled him for a while, he could be unavailable for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clash. However, head coach Stephen Fleming is optimistic about Dhoni’s chances while also stating that he has managed his injury well.

"He comes a month before the tournament starts, so he doesn't get the opportunity to do a lot [before that]," Fleming said.

"He will stay fit, they will do some netting in Ranchi, but his main pre-season [fitness] is done a month before when he comes to Chennai. And he works his way back into match-form and I think you can still see he's playing pretty well. So we never have any doubts about the way he manages himself and he always gets himself up to speed."

Dhoni was seen wearing a kneecap during the pre-season and in the nets as CSK prepared for the IPL 2023. The 41-year-old was seen struggling during the running between the wickets and hesitated to convert singles into twos.

While it is too early to comment on Dhoni’s availability for Monday’s clash against RCB, it won’t be a surprise if makes the match-day squad. It was also predicted that Dhoni could miss the season opener against Gujarat Titans (GT), but he nursed his injury while also playing some important cameo knocks. In four matches of the IPL 2023 Dhoni has scored 58 runs with a best unbeaten of 32.

CSK are already without Sisanda Magala, Deepak Chahar, Ben Stokes and Simarjeet Singh as they all continue to be part of the treatment table.

Yashasvi Jaiswal began his innings in a fashion he has done in earlier matches. However, he could not last long and was out on a score of 10 runs, which came off eight balls. Tushar Deshpande surprised him with a bouncer and he mistimed the shot. The ball went straight into the hands of Shivam Dube. Devdutt Padikkal came to bring RR back into the game and he and Buttler went on to find boundaries at consistent intervals.

CSK will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the South Indian derby on Monday, April 12. The contest will take place at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as both teams will push for two points. IPL 2023: RR's Sandeep Sharma holds nerves in thrilling last-over win despite MS Dhoni's cameo for CSK

Ajinkya Rahane debuted for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Yellow Army's face-off versus Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 12 of the IPL 2023 edition, on April 08. With Moeen Ali ruled out for being unwell, Rahane joined CSK's playing XI and made a solid start for MS Dhoni & Co. Chasing 158, CSK lost opener Devon Conway for duck but Rahane walked out at No. 3 and played a sublime 27-ball 61, laced with 7 fours and 3 sixes, to set the foundation for Chennai's seven-wicket win at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Rahane looked at his fluent best from the word go on his CSK debut. After his knock, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri hailed Rahane and called him an ideal team man. The former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator has closely worked with the former Indian Test vice-captain, during his coaching stint with the national side, and lavished Rahane's work ethics and willingness to perform any role for the team.

“I loved Ajinkya Rahane's innings. He was our captain in Australia, where I saw one of the greatest overseas hundreds by an Indian player. That will go right up with the very best, simply because of where India were at the start of the innings. He had taken over as captain, we were 36 all-out. On Boxing Day , to play like that, was fantastic,” Shastri told ESPNCricinfo.

Even if it comes to carrying water, or in dressing room, helping out someone. He's a top-class example of the way the game should be played,” Shastri further asserted.

'If it comes to carrying water or helping out someone, he's such a team man': Ravi Shastri hails CSK batter

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will host the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 17 of the IPL 2023 edition on Wednesday evening (April 12), at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After three games, CSK have won twice and occupy the fifth position in the points table. For the Yellow Army, the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and Tushar Deshpande have done well but they have plenty of injury concerns (including that of Ben Stokes and Deepak Chahar).

Ahead of their face-off versus Sanju Samson-led RR, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar wants Dhoni to promote himself higher in the batting order. In the two outings in IPL 2023, Dhoni has come out to bat at No. 8 and returned with scores of 14* (7) and 3-ball 12. Dhoni has looked in good touch and slammed as many as four boundaries (one four and three sixes). Thus, Gavaskar wants Dhoni to make use of his good form as he feels 'he is capable of scoring big runs'.

"I am hoping MS Dhoni promotes himself higher in the batting order. So that he gets to play more than two or three overs in the games. He can make that difference for CSK with his batting because he is capable of scoring big runs," Gavaskar said while speaking on Star Sports.

Dhoni will create history when he walks out on the field in CSK-RR clash in Chennai. He is set to play his 200th game as CSK captain, becoming the first-ever captain to reach the milestone. In 213 IPL games as captain, Dhoni has won 125 and losing 87 of them with a win percent of 58.96. Under him, CSK have won the IPL on four occasions and are aiming for their fifth title in what is expected to be Dhoni's last IPL season.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar hopes CSK skipper MS Dhoni 'promotes himself' in batting order

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have so far played three games and won two of them in IPL 2023. The MS Dhoni-led Yellow Army occupy the fifth spot at present and will host the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in match 17 on Wednesday evening (April 12). While CSK have got off to a decent start, there are many injury concerns for the Dhoni-led franchise. While Moeen Ali was unwell and missed their previous game, versus Mumbai Indians (MI), Ben Stokes is also not fully fit and set to miss a few more games.

In addition, Deepak Chahar somehow managed to bowl just one over in CSK's seven-wicket win over MI on April 08, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He suffered a hamstring injury and is set to miss CSK's upcoming games. In IPL 2022, he missed the entire season due to back injury and has been out of action for Team India as well since December 2022. Injuries -- mainly back and hamstring issues -- have dented Chahar's run in the past few years and former India head coach Ravi Shastri blasted the CSK pacer.

Ahead of CSK versus RR, in Chennai, Shastri said on ESPNcricinfo's T20 Time Out, "Let us put it this way: There are quite a few players who have become permanent residents of the NCA. Soon they will get a residence permit there, allowing them to walk in any time they want. And it is not a good thing. It's unreal. I mean, you are not playing that much cricket to be injured again and again. You can't even play four matches on the trot. Then why are you going to NCA for? I mean you come back and after three matches you are back there."

Shastri added, "So make sure you return fit and come back once and for all. It's damn frustrating, not just for the team but also for the players, the BCCI, and the captains of the various franchises. It's annoying, to say the least. I can understand a serious injury. But if after every four games someone touches the hamstring or his groyne, you start wondering what is actually going on. And some of them don't play any other cricket. I mean, it's just four overs, and in three hours the game is over. It's ridiculous."

While nothing is known about Chahar's injury right now, he is set to miss more than a couple of games for CSK and is participation in the remainder of IPL 2023 is also under dark clouds.

'You can't even play...': Ravi Shastri BLASTS CSK pacer, says he has become 'permanent NCA resident'

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got the better of arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in their first meeting in IPL 2023, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 08 (Saturday). The MS Dhoni-led Yellow Army opted to bowl first and rode on Ravindra Jadeja's 3 for 20, Mitchell Santner's 2 for 28 and Tushar Deshpande's 2 for 31 restricted the MI line-up for 157 for 8. Ajinkya Rahane led the charge for CSK with a fine 27-ball 61, laced with 7 fours and 3 sixes at 225.93, as CSK chased down the total with seven wickets to spare.

After the match, Dhoni would have been a satisfied captain as CSK's inexperienced bowling attack looked very good in contrast to their previous two outings. After Dhoni had cheekily warned the bowlers of bowling fewer extra deliveries post their home game versus Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) , where they leaked 18 extras (13 wides, three no-balls), they were very economical and disciplined and ended with only eight extras (five wides, zero no-ball). Tushar Deshpande, who returned with 2 for 45 vs LSG, ended with 2 for 31 (3) in the MI game. He dismissed Rohit with a peach off delivery and also removed Tim David later.

FACT-CHECK: Truth behind CSK bowler Tushar Deshpande's 'Rohit Sharma's wicket is easy' remark

Chennai Super Kings are in hot waters after their premier pacer Deepak Chahar and newest recruit Ben Stokes got ruled out for a few games due to respective injuries. Where injury-prone Deepak pulled his hamstring while bowling during the Mumbai game and will get sidelined for an extended period, Stokes will sit out for a week at least owing to the toe injury he suffered ahead of the Mumbai clash on Saturday.

It was on the fifth ball of Chahar’s first over when he felt discomfort in his hamstring. After consulting the team physio for a brief period, he decided to bowl the final delivery and then left the field, taking no further part in the game. The right-handed seamer will remain out of contention until further notice.

Deepak even missed last year’s IPL and the majority of India matches due to the back injury, and with this latest setback, his quest to fight for a place in the Indian team for the upcoming World Cup has suffered a hit.

On the other hand, Stokes, for whom CSK splurged a whopping INR 16.5 crores at last year’s auction, will also miss Chennai’s next two games against Rajasthan Royals (April 12th) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (April 17th). Before the start of IPL 2023, Stokes suffered a knee injury during England’s tour of New Zealand, and because of that, he didn’t bowl in the first game against Gujarat Titans. Though he bowled just one over against Lucknow in CSK’s first home game at Chepauk in many years.

Besides, his compatriot Moeen Ali, who starred with the ball against LSG, picking up crucial four wickets, missed the game against Mumbai because of food poisoning. Unlike Deepak and Stokes, Ali is expected to remain available for CSK’s next group match.

Even in absence of these three-star names, Chennai managed to upset Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium by seven wickets. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane came up with match-winning performances to see their team home.

IPL 2023: CSK in hot waters as Deepak Chahar among two STAR all-rounders ruled out for a few games

Mumbai Indians lost their second consecutive match of IPL 2023 and are yet to open their points account on the leaderboard. While MI are playing without their key bowler Jasprit Bumrah, it is the batting that has caused concerns in the last couple of games for them.

Speaking on the same, former MI player Harbhajan Singh, while talking to Star Sports after the match, said, "We say this team's bowling is their weakness but the batting has actually disappointed if we analyze it properly. The batters will have to score runs, then only your bowlers will come into the game. They are not playing freely. A big team is one which plays freely. It didn't seem that a five-time champion team would play this sort of cricket. They have big names in batting but they have disappointed in both the matches."

Mumbai had a good start against CSK as Rohit and Ishan Kishan added 38 for the first wicket. Kishan took the charge after Rohit's departure and MI looked set for a decent score with 64/2 in 6.4 overs and players like Tilak Verma & Tim David still to come.

CSK spinners, however, had different plans as they strangulated MI innings with four wickets in four overs, leaving them reeling at 76/5 in 9.1 overs. MI just couldn't come out of the situation and managed just 157/8 in 20 overs.

Harbhajan further added to his thoughts about MI's batting and said, "Tilak Varma was definitely the hero in the first match but once Tilak Varma got out today, it seemed no one had the awareness. Tim David was there but he only knows how to play big shots, he doesn't know how to take the game forward. The singles and doubles that Tilak took were good."

CSK though, lost the first wicket early in the chase, but Ajinkya Rahane scored a quickfire 50 to make small work of the target. Chennai registered their second win on the trot after beating Mumbai by seven wickets.

Mumbai next play against DC on April 11.

IPL 2023: 'They are not...:' Harbhajan Singh's BOLD remark after MI's loss against CSK

Mumbai Indian will take on Chennai Super Kings in one of the most riveting rivalries of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday, April 8, 2023. This will also be the 1000th match to be played in the IPL.

While MS Dhoni-led CSK will look to continue their winning streak after beating LSG by 12 runs in the last match, Rohit Sharma-led MI will be keen to open their account after losing their opening match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Chennai, who lost their first match against defending champion Gujarat Titans, however, might have to do without their star all-rounder Ben Stokes. The English Test captain, according to a report by the media outlet, The Indian Express, has been advised to rest for 10 days after experiencing pain in his heel following a practice session ahead of MI clash.

Stokes, who was bought for a whooping sum of INR 16.25 crore in the mini auction ahead of IPL 2023, did play in the previous two matches for Chennai but failed to make an impact with either bat or ball.

In season's first match against GT, Stokes played as pure batter and scored seven off six in CSK's loss by five wickets. In the second match against LSG, Stokes scored a paltry eight off eight in the 400+ run-fest and went for 18 in his solitary over. CSK although, won the match by 12 runs after scoring 217/5 in their 20 overs.

Even before the season started, there were some doubts whether Stokes will be able to bowl or not and CSK batting coach Mike Hussey had said that the Englishman will be used as pure batter initially.

The MI-CSK match is one of the most anticipated contests in the IPL and with Stokes unsure for the marquee clash despite not firing in the last two matches, MI surely have an upper hand as they seek their first win of the season.

MI vs CSK IPL 2023: 'Indian El Clasico' Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings; Check probable playing XI squad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai after four years, on Monday (April 03), when they hosted the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 06 of IPL 2023. After a loss in the season-opener, to defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), MS Dhoni-led CSK emerged on top, at the Chepauk, with a 12-run win in a high-scoring thriller.

Dhoni had a memorable homecoming as he slammed a 3-ball 12, laced with two sixes, and used his bowlers judiciously to restrict LSG to 205 for 7 after they were off to a flying start in pursuit of 218. After CSK made 217-7, LSG were 79 for no loss in less than six overs with opener Kyle Mayers (53) going bonkers. Dhoni brought his spinners Moeen Ali (4 fior 26) and Mitchell Santer (1 for 21) to curb the run-flow and account for regular breakthroughs.

Due to Moeen-Santner's disciplined bowling, using the longer side of the ground to perfection, Dhoni didn't use star spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Meanwhile, he didn't give the ball to Moeen in CSK-GT clash. Thus, former Indian pacer RP Singh hailed Dhoni's knack for catching the pulse of the game and using his bowlers smartly; as per conditions and opposition's strengths and weaknesses.

“I would beg Mahi to give me his unmatched ability to catch the pulse of a match,” said the former left-arm pacer in a Jio Cinema programme. When it came to the question of stealing, unsurprisingly Singh -- who was part of Dhoni-led India's 2007 T20 World Cup success -- said, "There are so many things you can steal from him, but I would probably steal one of his bikes, the RX100."

At 41, Dhoni continues to make heads turn with his all-round skills. The former Indian captain has faced 10 deliveries in IPL 2023 and slammed 26 runs -- laced with three sixes a four -- and remains an asset behind the stumps due to his reflexes, keeping the inner-circle fielders proactive and helping the bowlers on which length to resort to.

Dhoni -- who ended his international career with 17,266 runs and led India to all three ICC titles -- also competed 5,000 IPL runs during CSK-LSG tie. CSK will now face Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 12 of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday evening (April 08).

IPL 2023: 'I would beg him to give...' - Ex-India pacer hails CSK captain MS Dhoni after LSG win

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition kicked off on March 31 and is already gaining traction with each passing day. So far, the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) have won two matches in a row whereas last year's runners-up Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 72 runs. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) , the two most successful IPL teams, have lost one each with the latter winning their previous encounter by 12 runs. Meanwhile, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are also looking serious contenders.

In this regard, many former cricketers recently shared the teams who will finish at the top-two positions after the end of the ongoing group stage. "Sanju Samson's Royals and Faf du Plessis' Royal Challengers look like a great side. They can finish as the top two teams," Sanjay Manjrekar -- former Indian batter who is part of the elite commentary panellists of Star Sports, the official TV broadcaster of IPL, told on Star.

It will be interesting to see who will be the two teams who end up at the top two spots. The two sides will get an extra game to enter the final whereas the third and fourth-ranked sides will lock horns in the Eliminator and then also play the loser of Qualifier 1, in Qualifier 2, to make it to the summit clash.

IPL 2023: Not CSK or MI! Sanjay Manjrekar makes his top two picks after group stage

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have lit up the atmosphere in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. After losing an intensly-fought season-opener to defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), on March 31, the four-time champions Yellow Army locked horns with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai -- their first game at the Chepauk after 1,426 days (following IPL 2019).

The crowd at the Chepauk gave a rousing reception to the Dhoni-led CSK brigade in their memorable homecoming after 2019. Asked to bat first, Chennai rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad's 57, Devon Conway's 47, Shivam Dube's 16-ball 27, Moeen Ali's 13-ball 19, Ambati Rayudu's 14-ball 27* and Dhoni's 3-ball 12 to post 217 for 7. While CSK bowlers were erratic, they managed to defend the total as Lucknow were restricted for 205 for 7. Thus, it was a memorable return to Chepauk for CSK.

Dhoni gave plenty to cheer for the fans as well. The crowd waited patiently for him to come out to bat. There was a sigh of relief for many when Ravindra Jadeja got out in the final over with five balls to spare. Dhoni played only three deliveries but blasted two back-to-back sixes and returned with 12 (3). Even in the opening game, CSK skipper made 14* off seven balls, striking at 200.

After the clash, former Pakistan captain and keeper-batter Rashid Latif hailed Dhoni. Latif was asked to share his views on the '41-year-old youngster' by Nauman Niaz. To this, the former cricketer said on the Youtube channel Caught Behind, "He has scored 5000 runs in IPL alone. Dhoni has always had a golden template. His history has been written with gold - for India, for world cricket. You and I can say whatever we like but it won't make a difference. He is easily the greatest ever Indian captain, and also a wicketkeeper batter. There is no doubt there."

"Look at the way he batted. He faced just 2-3 balls and showed what he has always been capable of. He is the most famous player. We have seen Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, even Virat Kohli. But Dhoni, and the way he conducts himself on the field and the following that he has, there is a different vibe and intensity to it altogether. Outstanding," added Latif.

CSK are at the sixth position in the points table with one win and a loss. They will next face arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 08 (Saturday).

Opting to bowl first, KL Rahul & Co. were off to a poor start as Ruturaj Gaikwad (57) and Devon Conway (47) stitched a whirlwind 110-run opening stand. At the post-match presentation, CSK captain Dhoni said, "Terrific high-scoring game. All of us were thinking how the wicket would be. It was the perfect first game that could happen. I thought it would be much slower. But it was a wicket where you could score runs. I was quite surprised with the wicket. But we'll have to see if we can produce a wicket like this game after game. Fast bowling we need to slightly improve. Need to bowl according to the conditions. WHat is important is to keep an eye as to what the opposition bowlers are doing. One more thing is they'll have to bowl no no-balls or extra wides. Or they'll have to play under a new captain. It will be my second warning and then I'll be off. Only reason we've scored those runs is if the surface is nice."

Dhoni, who came into bat in the last, hit two consecutive sixes off LSG's Mark Wood to thrill the Cheapuk crowd. With those two sixes, MSD also became the seventh cricketer in IPL to enter the 5000-run club.

The game was a historic affair for the four-time winners CSK as they returned to their fortress, i.e. the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, after 1,426 days (following the IPL 2019 edition). Being a fortress for Dhoni & Co., the CSK franchise ensured a memorable homecoming with a 12-run win over KL Rahul & Co. in a high-scoring thriller at the Chepauk.

Being asked to bat first, CSK rode on Ruturaj Gaikwad (57), Devon Conway (47), Shivam Dube (27), Moeen Ali (19), Ambati Rayudu (27*) and MS Dhoni (12)'s blistering knocks as they posted IPL 2023's highest team total; 217 for 7. In reply, LSG restricted 205 for 7 to lose by 12 runs. While there were many thrilling moments in the high-voltage clash, it was Dhoni's 3-ball 12, filled with two big sixes, which made heads turn. Coming out to bat in the last over, the 41-year-old came out in the middle with only five balls left in CSK's innings. He sent the first two balls out of the fence with two mammoth sixes as the crowd went bonkers at the Chepauk.

CSK vs LSG Head to Head: IPL 2023 Chennai Super Kings & Lucknow Super Giants, pitch report, playing XI & more

Chennai Super Kings are ready to host the high-flying Lucknow Super Giants in Match 6th of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 in Chepauk on Monday. Following a thumping win over Delhi Capitals on the weekend, LSG are expected to have worked on the plans to succeed in unfamiliar territory.

Meanwhile, in their only outing so far in the previous season, Lucknow beat Chennai by six wickets. Although Chennai suffered a five-wicket defeat in their IPL 2023 opener against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), they will aim to turn the tables in home conditions. Happy to return to the den, talismanic captain MS Dhoni can use more spin-bowling options; for instance, Moeen Ali, who didn’t bowl in Ahmedabad, would fancy his chances against LSG’s Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran and Krunal Pandya. ALSO READ: IPL 2023: Virat Kohli unlocks another MASSIVE achievement with unbeaten 82 against Mumbai Indians Whereas, Deepak Chahar and Rajvardhan Hangargekar will also be tested with the new ball. In absence of the Sri Lankan duo of Theekshana and Pathirana and other than Tushar Deshpande – who came in as an Impact Player in the first game and conceded over 50 runs in around three overs, seamer Simarjeet Singh could also be tried. In CSK’s batting, Devon Conway, who would also be playing his first match at this venue, might enjoy the time out there, given his nature of stroke-playing. On the other hand, all eyes will again be on Ruturaj Gaikwad, who starred against GT, hitting an incredible 92. Talking about LSG now, the return of Quinton de Kock following South Africa’s series win over the Netherlands will boost the camp’s confidence, but he remains unlikely to play tonight. LSG will not mind that either as Kyle Mayers’ exploits against DC could propel the franchise to back him going ahead. On the bowling front, Mark Wood’s sheer pace and latest figures will keep the travelling side motivated, whereas leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi could also come in handy on the Chepauk track. Also, they could bring in the experienced Amit Mishra, particularly for this contest. Result Prediction – Considering CSK’s records at home are strong and with the variety, they have in their bowling attack, they would be the favourites in tonight’s game against LSG. Predicted XIs of both teams – Chennai – Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (capt, wk), Mitchell Santner, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Deepak Chahar and Simarjeet Singh Lucknow – KL Rahul (capt & wk), Kyle Mayers, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni, Krunal Pandya, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Amit Mishra and Mark Wood
