Dhoni has not had the best of runs as a batter in the last three editions. While he did put up a much-improved show in IPL 2022, he still managed only 232 runs in 14 games, at a strike rate of 123.40. However, he gave something to cheer for his ardent fans by turning back the clock courtesy of his match-finishing knock versus Mumbai Indians (MI), played a few rapid cameos, and struck one fifty during the tournament opener, versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Dhoni's loyalists will hope for a memorable season for the legendary cricketer who might step away from the game completely after this year's IPL.

WATCH: MS Dhoni's NO-LOOK big hit at the CSK nets goes viral ahead of IPL 2023

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition will kick off on March 31 with the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) on their home ground, in Ahmedabad. The Yellow Army will be eager to start off on a winning note after their disastrous run in the IPL 2022 season, where they finished in the ninth spot. It is likely that the upcoming season will be Dhoni's last and, hence, the four-time winners will be desperate to give him a fitting farewell with another title win.

In IPL 2020, CSK failed to enter the playoffs for the first time ever in their rich history. In the next season, they bounced back in style and won the trophy. In IPL 2022, they once again fell flat and, hence, many hope for them to make a strong statement in this year's edition. They have already included England's star all-rounder Ben Stokes in their setup who will definitely provide more depth and balance to the side.

Ahead of IPL 2023, former Indian and CSK off-spinner Harbhajan Singh mentioned the player who can be Chennai's X-factor. Bhajji feels Ravindra Jadeja will be their trump card in the forthcoming season.

"The one person who everyone should keep an eye on is Ravindra Jadeja, especially how he bats for CSK. He may be promoted up the order plus he has his four overs," Harbhajan said on Star Sports.

"If you look at it from a world cricket perspective, I don't think there's a better all-rounder than him. So I’m looking forward to seeing Ravindra Jadeja in the IPL. The X factor for me will be Ravindra Jadeja because he has been very successful in these conditions as a bowler and a batsman, he’s been playing there for so many years. So for me, he is definitely going to be the X factor for the side," the veteran off-spinner further added.

Jadeja had a poor run in IPL 2022, where he led in the first eight games after being appointed the new captain ahead of the season. Under him, CSK only managed two wins whereas his own form remained a cause of concern. He ended with 116 runs at a strike rate of 118.37 and only claimed five wickets before a rib injury ruled him out after ten games.

Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite retiring from the international level in mid-2020. He had a glorious run at the highest level, amassing 17,266 runs -- despite mostly batting lower order the order -- for Team India along with accounting for 634 catches, 195 stumpings, 359 sixes and leading the national side to all three major ICC titles. He ended with 16 tons and as many as 108 half-centuries across formats. In the IPL, he has featured for the CSK franchise in 13 out of 15 editions, leading them to four titles and nine finals overall. IPL 2023: MS Dhoni turns back the clock with MAGNANIMOUS sixes in CSK practice session - WATCH

MS Dhoni will be seen in action on the 22-yard cricket strip in the forthcoming IPL 2023 edition, which kicks off on March 31. Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket despite hanging up his boots at the highest level in mid-2020, with a stellar career with over 10,000 runs in ODIs, close to 5,000 Test runs, 634 catches, 195 stumpings and leading India to all three major ICC titles.

Dhoni will lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 16. CSK is a huge brand and a major credit of the franchise's success goes to the former Indian captain. He has been associated with the Yellow Army since the inaugural season, in 2008, and remains their poster boy. Dhoni-CSK's story is one-for-the-ages as the former is from Jharkhand but got accepted in a jiffy from the Chennai crowd ever since he got roped in by the team owners in inaugural IPL auction.

However, Dhoni wasn't CSK's first-choice. In the past, while speaking on his Youtube channel, former CSK batsman Subramaniam Badrinath revealed that the franchise had initially zeroed in on buying Virender Sehwag and not Dhoni.

"The CSK management had decided (before IPL 2008) on picking Sehwag, but Sehwag himself said that he was brought up in Delhi, so he would have a better connection (with Delhi Daredevils). The management agreed for him (Sehwag) to play in Delhi, thinking it would be better. Then came the auctions, and they saw who was the better player. Before that India won the 2007 World T20. And only then did they decide to sign Dhoni,” Badrinath said.

Dhoni has led CSK to four IPL and two Champions League (CLT20) titles. The first match of the league will be played on 31st March between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, top cricketer and former Indian captain MS Dhoni joined the CSK camp on Friday to kick off the official preparations. IPL 2023, 27 days to go: CSK begins preparations as MS Dhoni joins the camp; Schedule & live-streaming details

England Test captain Ben Stokes isn’t jeopardising his chances of appearing in the homes Ashes fully fit by competing in this year’s IPL, feels his Test coach Brendon McCullum. Having hinted earlier that he might skip the latter stage of the IPL just to return home fit for the extended summer, Stokes has found himself in a dilemma of fulfilling his $1.9m IPL commitment.

McCullum feels Stokes, who is currently enduring a knee injury, needs to be managed well. Talking about the fear of having an injured Stokes at his disposal following the IPL 2023, McCullum said he isn’t worried about Stokes being at CSK because he knows over there they take good care of a player and manage his workload well.

Understanding the gravity of playing for Chennai in the IPL, Stokes is firm in his head of not showing his back to them; however, he also realises the importance of staying fit for the upcoming home Ashes. Caught in the middle of all of this after not being able to put up a 100% performance in the Wellington Test against New Zealand due to discomfort in his knee, Stokes is expected to be available for the IPL 2023 opener against Gujarat Titans on March 31st.

Speaking on this matter, Brendon said Stokes being someone who looks at a bigger picture, would be careful with his fitness given the rigorous IPL schedule, and that Brendon backs CSK management to take good care of the 31-year-old this season.

"I don't think he's jeopardising it," McCullum said. "The Chennai set-up is excellent in looking after their players and they've a very good medical team and he will be well looked after. The skipper has a strong mind and he knows how to get right for the big moments. His life is that, right? So I don't have any concerns. In fact I look forward to watching him play in it and see, without captaincy as well, the opportunity to play cricket without worrying about everybody else, knowing when he comes back into the fold and leads us into the Ashes campaign he'll have the bit between his teeth and I think we'll be alright.”

"He sees the big picture in everything, so I've no concerns that the skipper will be totally looked after. And I also believe that the Ashes is the script that the skipper is waiting to write, so he'll be sweet," McCullum added.

Brendon further said he would be talking to Stephen Fleming, CSK’s head coach, about managing Stokes’ playing time in IPL; and having played in Chennai Super Kings himself, Brendon remains confident of the franchise’s leadership group in understanding Ben’s situation.

"I've got a tee-time with him [Fleming]. So I'll be talking to him and making sure he looks after the skipper, but I know that Chennai set-up actually. I played in that franchise and they're very good. They've got a good team and an outstanding leader in Flem," Brendon said.

At the auctions, the Chennai Super Kings are strategic. They took their time getting started in the IPL auction 2023, but they managed to get some exceptionally outstanding players. That is what they planned for Indian Premier League 2023 when they signed England all-rounder Ben Stokes for a record INR 16.25 crore. That was one of CSK's better purchases since it significantly enhanced their team. While everyone expected them to go after Sam Curran to bring him back into the team, CSK surprised everyone by going all in on Stokes. CSK went into the auction with a purse of INR 20.45 crore and seven seats to fill with two overseas. CSK made shocking selections at the IPL 2023 auction and went all in on Stokes. Under the famous MS Dhoni's guidance, CSK has won four IPL titles & two Champions Trophy T20 (CLT20) crowns. From the tournament's inception in 2008, the wicketkeeper-batter has led CSK. He stood down as captain before the IPL 2022, with Ravindra Jadeja chosen as his replacement. But things did not go as planned, and Dhoni returned to leadership midway through the competition. IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Check squad, list of players, remaining purse & all you need to know

Indian cricket has had many heroes, champions, demigods — someone like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble among others; and then comes MS Dhoni. One name that had a generation growing up fall for his wonders, his persona and what not. Other than being the most successful Indian captain having won three different ICC trophies – T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup and the Champions Trophy — and being the only captain ever to do so, Dhoni also tasted tremendous success as the leader of the pack at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

To begin with, it’s fair to say the introduction of the IPL to the world changed the way how cricket is looked up to and played today. The commencement of the now second-richest league in the world in terms of value across all sports paved a new path for the shortest format to thrive and succeed. Chennai Super Kings, also globally known as CSK, is led by MS Dhoni from season 1 and up until the 16th edition of the IPL that begins on March 31 this year, this franchise happens to start as out-right favourites for the nth time.

Be it for the biggest or perhaps the loudest fan base in franchise cricket in this country, or for its history that literally gets richer with each passing season, Chennai Super Kings know how to make the most of the moment. Talking of living in the moment, who is better in doing it than the man himself, MS Dhoni. Having captained more than hundreds of players since 2008, Dhoni’s CSK has the privilege of being called the best IPL team in the tournament’s history. And why wouldn’t it be!

CSK, barring the two seasons when get got banned in the spot-fixing episode alongside Rajasthan Royals, have made it to the playoffs on 11 occasions in addition to reaching the finals on record nine times – the most by any team in IPL history. Not only this, they also have the highest win percentage of matches among all IPL teams.

In the inaugural season, they made it to the finals without a star-studded squad in comparison to others, where they lost to Rajasthan Royals. Come 2010, they won their maiden IPL trophy alongside winning the now-scrapped Champions League title the same year. Team Yellow then tasted success the next year as well before going down in the summit clash on several occasions in the following seasons.

Upon making a superlative return to the Indian Premier League following the ban, Chennai Super Kings again lifted the trophy in 2018 and achieved the same feat three years later in 2021. To put all of this in perspective, CSK claimed all these laurels under one captain only – MS Dhoni. The ageing MS held the fortress and didn’t let it fall despite numerous obstacles every year. No wonder he is regarded as the greatest captain ever – let alone for his IPL franchise or for the Indian team.

So, the question here arises that who takes over the reins when MS says goodbye to IPL?

Looking at the Chennai Super Kings’ current setup, we might take a look at the few options. While CSK tried Ravindra Jadeja as the captain for the early half of last year’s IPL, he couldn’t deliver – more so, his performance was getting affected by the burden of captaincy, as MS Dhoni had said before renouncing captaincy himself for the remainder of the season.

However, for the IPL upcoming season as well, which in hindsight is looking like MS Dhoni’s final season as a CSK player, someone has to be bestowed upon with the responsibility of not only leading this franchise but also carrying forward Dhoni’s legacy.

So, what are the options?

The easiest go-to-option is none other than CSK’s latest and the most-expensive recruit ever (INR 16.25 crores), England’s Ben Stokes. The English Test captain has had super success since taking over the leadership hat from Joe Root in the longest format. Given his credentials as an all-format batter and considering he has played alongside MS Dhoni in the past – in Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni along with the management could be tempted to hand over the captaincy to him. Now with Stokes lately announcing that he would be leaving the IPL 2023 a bit early in order to get ready in time for the long home summer, the CSK management could pick someone else, looking at the long-term option.

So then, who’s next? Ideal answer is Ruturaj Gaikwad

The Tami Nadu opener won IPL 2021 with CSK and is one of their most dependable batters at the top of the order. With age on his side, and having the experience of rubbing shoulders with the biggies in Chennai’s dressing room, Ruturaj looks like the perfect fit. Although all will depend on MS and the management and how and who they approach for the same role.

Explained: What future holds for Chennai Super Kings after Dhoni? Who will take forward his legacy?

On Wednesday (February 22), England Test captain Ben Stokes indicated that he will leave IPL 2023 early to prepare for the one-off Test versus Ireland and Ashes 2023, both on home soil. Addressing the press ahead of England's second and final Test versus hosts New Zealand, Stokes revealed that he is ready to skip the latter stage of the forthcoming IPL season, where he will represent the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for national duty. It is to be noted that the Ireland Test begins only four days after IPL 2023. Hence, his absence will be a massive blow for Dhoni & Co. if they remain alive in the tournament till then.

"Yes, I'll play," Stokes told the reporters for the Ireland Test. "I'll be making sure that I give myself enough time to get back and play that [Ireland] game," he added. After his statement, former Indian opener has questioned CSK's captaincy plans. Speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Chopra reacted to Stokes' claims and opined that Dhoni would be unable to hand over the reins to the Englishman if he wishes to at any stage of this year's IPL.

Chopra told, "Some people were saying that the Chennai Super Kings gave so much money to Ben Stokes because they want to groom him for captaincy. If you want to groom him for captaincy and the heir apparent leaves in the last phase, even if Chennai have made up their mind, they will not be able to do the hand-holding."

"As they say pass on the baton - how will that happen because MS Dhoni will be captaining and halfway through if he says that he will give it to Stokes, he is not going to be available in the end. So that cannot happen.," he asserted.

The former Indian opener further added, "It will be interesting to see Chennai's plan - does he (Stokes) even feature in their captaincy scheme of things or whether either Moeen Ali or Ruturaj Gaikwad could be their next captain? We shall find out. This will be in everyone's mind that you have to be a little careful with the money you invest in England and Australian players in an Ashes year - how you distribute your resources because there are chances of them leaving."

CSK will play the tournament opener versus the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 31 in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2023: 'They won't be able to...' - Chopra on CSK's captaincy plans after Ben Stokes set to leave early

T20 World Cup winner with England Ben Stokes was picked by four-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at last year’s auction for INR 16.25 crores ($1.9m). Tipped to be CSK’s next leader following MS Dhoni’s potential retirement from the IPL after the upcoming season, Stokes could be on his way out to England irrespective of how far does the franchise reaches in the cash-rich league this time. Ahead of England’s second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, which begins on Friday, Test skipper Stokes hinted at cutting short his IPL 2023 stint so as to prepare for one Ireland Test and the home Ashes that follows.

After BCCI announced the much-awaited IPL 2023 schedule that begins on March 31st and ends on May 28th – just four days before the start of the lone England vs Ireland Test at The Lord’s, Stokes told reporters he would be playing in the slated Test, and for that if he has to come home early, leaving the IPL at a later stage, so be it.

"Yes, I'll play," Stokes answered when asked if he will play the Ireland Test. "I'll be making sure that I give myself enough time to get back and play that [Ireland] game."

While the English Cricket Board (ECB) hasn’t enforced a return date for the Test players playing in the IPL including that of Joe Root, Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow and Jofra Archer among others; Stokes said he would speak with the board, management and the players to see what windows suits everyone the best. He added saying if for some players it makes sense to miss the Ireland Test in order to stay fit and get ready for the home Ashes that follows, he’d leave the door open for that too.

"I'll probably get round the individuals and ask them what they want to be ready for the Ashes, because those five games are obviously the big ones of the summer, and you've got to think about what lads want. But what if something was to happen in that game [Ireland] and we lose someone for the Ashes ... It's just one of those where you have to weigh up the options of what the individual person actually wants out of that week, versus do we really need to play that one. Because, obviously, I'm right in saying that series is bigger than that game against Ireland," Stokes on how he’s going to do player management ahead of the Ashes.

Meanwhile, alongside Stokes, several other English players also made headlines for their hefty prices tags at the IPL 2023 auction. While young all-rounder Sam Curran became the most-expensive player in IPL history by going for INR 18.5 crores ($ 2.25m) to Punjab Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad broke the bank for the dynamite all-format batter Harry Brook, purchasing him for a whopping INR 13.25 crores ($ 1.5m).

Chennai and defending champions Gujarat Titans will face off in the first match of IPL 2023 on March 31st.

"Yes, I'll play," Stokes answered when asked if he will play the Ireland Test. "I'll be making sure that I give myself enough time to get back and play that [Ireland] game." ALSO READ: Women's T20 WC: Australian opener Beth Mooney wary of India challenge as semis clash looms While the English Cricket Board (ECB) hasn’t enforced a return date for the Test players playing in the IPL including that of Joe Root, Mark Wood, Jonny Bairstow and Jofra Archer among others; Stokes said he would speak with the board, management and the players to see what windows suits everyone the best.

In what comes as a huge blow to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the start of IPL 2023, their latest recruit, New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson is all set to be ruled out for the complete season following a back surgery. Jamieson is out of international cricket for around seven months due to the back injury he sustained last year during the England Tests. Eyeing to make his return to the setup after a long layoff, his plans got jolted when his injury reoccurred forcing him to go under the knife this time later this week. This now again rules him out for another four months, Kiwi Head Coach Gary Stead confirmed on Monday, February 20th.

Jamieson was picked in the squad to play in the home two-match Test series against England. In a bid to get back to match fitness, Jamieson played some domestic List-A and T20 matches in January. In addition to that, he also played in the tour game against England but didn’t get picked for the first Test, which the hosts lost by an embarrassing margin of 267 runs.

"Kyle has seen a back surgeon and is getting surgery later in the week. It's been a challenging and difficult time for Kyle and a big loss for us. He has been fantastic when he has been around all of our sides when he has been part of them," head coach Stead said, as quoted by Stuff.

Subsequently, he will also be out for the second Test that starts on February 24th at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

"So we just wish him well, and we will know more in about three to four months about what that end prognosis looks like for him. Surgery provides a quicker return to play and that's the encouraging thing for him. We want to give him the best chance of recovery because we know what a star he has been for us," Stead added.

Meanwhile, at the IPL 2023 auction last year, Chennai splurged INR 1 crore (10 million) for the New Zealand seamer, but now it looks like they have to go ahead without Kyle. Jamieson has experience playing in the IPL before – having appeared for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021 following his breakthrough season in international cricket. With the RCB, the lanky fast bowler played nine matches picking up as many wickets.

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League will start on March 31st with CSK taking on last year winner Gujarat Titans.

MS Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket. The former Indian captain had an illustrious career at the international level, amassing 17,266 runs, scoring 16 tons, claiming 634 catches and 195 stumpings, hitting 359 sixes along with leading India to all three major ICC titles during his captaincy tenure. While the wicketkeeper-batter was known for his calmness, captaincy, keeping and power-hitting skills, he was also known to be an asset behind the stumps; helping bowlers plot the downfall of opposition batters.

In this regard, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha hailed Dhoni and revealed how he made life easier for the bowlers. "I think he used to make things very simple. If you see all the spinners who have played along with him or under him, they used to enjoy his advice. He used to make things very easy for us. As a bowler, you have to think about your own bowling, felding, you have to think about the batsman, you have to think about the conditions," he told Hindustan Times in an interview.

"But he was one who used to take one part out of your system, like the field placement or maybe how the wicket is behaving. These are the things which he would help you out with. That is the reason why it was less of a burden on a bowler, and that is what I enjoyed," Ojha asserted.

The 36-year-old Ojha, who represented India in 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and six T20Is, also revealed that Dhoni's best quality was that he used to ensure that his teammates were not under any pressure. "I think the best part was the way he used to make sure that the pressure doesn't come to us. That is something that really helped me. That is something I make sure that when a young person is playing, I make sure the pressure doesn't mount on him. That is something that really helps you", Ojha added.

Dhoni will next be seen in action in IPL 2023, where he will once again lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It is expected to be his last season in the cash-rich league and will be desperate to guide his side to their fifth title.

'He used to...': Former Indian spinner on how MS Dhoni helped bowlers from behind the stumps

Out of favour India opener, Murali Vijay on Monday, January 30th announced his retirement from international cricket. He informed everyone about his decision via social media where he penned down a 'thank you' note for all those who were part of his journey. Vijay was a key member of MS Dhoni’s Test side during his early days as an India captain. Even in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Vijay used to play for Chennai Super Kings, with whom he won two IPL titles in 2010 and 2011 in addition to winning the Champions League in 2010. As an Indian player, Vijay played 61 Tests, 17 ODIs and just nine T20Is.

Having scored his first Test century against the mighty Aussies in Bengaluru in 2010, Vijay went on to score 11 more. What’s interesting is that out of those 11, most came on the foreign soil and against tougher bowling line-ups. While on paper his Test average is a notch above 38, it doesn’t reflect his true attributes as a Test opener.

Off the various hundreds to his name, the most famous one had come against England in Trent Bridge in 2014 when he scored 146 off 361 balls. At the mecca of cricket in Lord’s during the same series, Vijay played a brilliant hand of 95 in the first innings, helping India clinch the Test victory at the very venue after decades.

An excellent leaver of the cricket ball, the right-handed Vijay found success in Australia too. While his 99 in the second innings of the first Test in Adelaide during the 2014/15 series is tipped to be one of his best, his 144 at the Gabba in Brisbane is rated as one of his bravest.

Despite being so successful at the top of the order in red-ball cricket, Vijay failed to replicate his form in the shorter formats. In the IPL too, he played for a couple of other franchises since leaving Chennai but couldn’t leave much of an impact. While he played his final Test against Australia in 2018 in Perth, his last Ranji Trophy outing came against Karnataka in 2019.

'MS Dhoni is the best captain': English allrounder heaps praise on former Indian skipper

On Friday (December 23), the Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction was held in Kochi. The city hosted the 16th IPL auction for the first time ever and saw plenty of big names trigger a bidding war among the ten franchises. The likes of Sam Curran (INR 18.5 crore), Cameron Green (INR 17.5 crore), Ben Stokes (INR 16.25 crore) were the three to return with the biggest pay cheques.

After Stokes joined the four-time champions CSK, some believe that it will give MS Dhoni a chance to hand over the captaincy to the English all-rounder, who is off to a dream start as the England Test captain. Before IPL 2022, Dhoni had quit captaincy and asked Ravindra Jadeja to lead which didn't yield desirable results. Nonetheless, will Dhoni dare to repeat the same move with Stokes joining the Yellow Army? In this regard, Universe Boss Chris Gayle gave a fitting reply.

Gayle, during his discussion on Jio Cinemas, was asked to comment on the CSK captaincy debate. He replied saying, “Dhoni. Once you are playing, you lead a team, okay? Done.”

Gayle further asserted, "They are two fantastic minds in the dressing room, MSD and Ben Stokes. But I think Stokes will sit back and respect MSD and let him do his thing. The young players will also get to learn a lot from Stokes. It’s good to have him and he still has the likes of DJ Bravo in the CSK ranks."

"Fitting in the culture is important and I am sure without any doubt, with his experience, he will fit in amazingly with the Super Kings. As we all knock, they lack all-rounders and will accept Stokes with both hands," added the IPL legend.

Done.” Also read: BAN vs IND: 'He was sent to...' - Pujara on why Axar Patel was promoted ahead of Virat Kohli in 2nd Test Gayle further asserted, "They are two fantastic minds in the dressing room, MSD and Ben Stokes. But I think Stokes will sit back and respect MSD and let him do his thing. The young players will also get to learn a lot from Stokes. It’s good to have him and he still has the likes of DJ Bravo in the CSK ranks." "Fitting in the culture is important and I am sure without any doubt, with his experience, he will fit in amazingly with the Super Kings. As we all knock, they lack all-rounders and will accept Stokes with both hands," added the IPL legend. MS Dhoni or Ben Stokes! Who should lead CSK in IPL 2023? Chris Gayle gives apt reply

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a bumper deal at the mini-auction on Friday in Kochi by purchasing England's World Cup winner Ben Stokes for INR 16.25 crores. Stokes, who helped England win the T20 World Cup in Australia earlier this year was always going to make headlines at the mini-auction given his credentials.

Meanwhile, Chennai's camp alongside their fans were elated after securing Ben's services for the next couple of years at least. But how did the skipper MS Dhoni reacted CSK CEO Kasi Viswanath gave us an update.

As quoted by ESPN cricinfo, Viswanath not only cleared the air about Stokes' potential role as a future CSK captain once Dhoni leaves, he also informed everyone about how did the captain feel about having Stokes on his side, once again.

"Very excited to get Stokes, and we were lucky also because he came up at the end. We wanted an all-rounder, and MS was very happy that we got Stokes. The captaincy option is there, but it’s a call MS will take with time. Kyle Jamieson was injured, so maybe many others didn’t look at him. We had information from Fleming that he had recovered and was raring to go. CSK looks bright, and I hope we do well this season. We follow the process always, and that will help us do well," Kasi Viswanath said.

Ben Stokes and MS Dhoni played together in 2017 for Rising Pune Supergiant where Stokes helped RPS reach the finals for the first time. This time at the CSK this pair is likely to flourish as well. With Stokes on his side, MS Dhoni will now have an added bowling option under his sleeves. The presence of a match-winner like Ben Stokes will boost the team's confidence who stood 9th on the points table with just 4 wins in 14 games the last season.

As the upcoming season of the IPL is likely to be MS Dhoni's last as a player for CSK, he will like to bid adieu to franchise cricket by winning it for the 5th time; and Ben Stokes will play a handy role in helping him achieve the last hurray.

IPL 2023: Here's how CSK skipper MS Dhoni reacted after Chennai bought Ben Stokes at mini-auction

The IPL 2023 mini-auction has started off with a bang. Among the early set of players, England's power-hitter Harry Brook -- who made heads turn during England's successful tour of Pakistan -- fetched a whopping deal after being acquired by the 2016 winners Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 13.25 crore (INR 132.5 million). On the other hand, SRH also got another big name in their kitty, getting Punjab Kings' (PBKS) former skipper Mayank Agarwal for INR 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million).

Talking about Brook, the 23-year-old saw a big bidding war for him with SRH and Rajasthan Royals (RR) fighting hard for his services. After taking his price into double digits, the bidding war wasn't over before Hyderabad finally won the war by shelling out a huge sum.

Meanwhile, there were a lot of eyeballs on Mayank once his name was announced. The former Punjab captain's mention also led to a bidding war between SRH, Punjab, and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) before the former got him for INR 8.25 crore. It is to be noted that Hyderabad entered the IPL 2023 mini-auction with the largest purse; i.e. INR 42.25 crore (INR 422.5 million). Hence, they have started off on a smashing note by getting two big names under their belt.

It will be interesting to see if they go hard on some of the big all-rounders who can also captain them. At present, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar as a captaincy option along with Mayank.

IPL 2023: SRH acquire Harry Brook for Rs 13.25 crore, fetch Mayank Agarwal's services for Rs 8.25 crore

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction hogged the limelight on Friday (December 23). After much hullabaloo, the auction proceedings kicked off in Kochi, with the city hosting it for the first time ever, and saw some big names acquire whopping deals. England all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes went under the hammer in Kochi and was sold to the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

The CSK franchise entered the auction pool with INR 20.45 crore (INR 204.5 million). A franchise that always retains its core and goes for a selected few players in the auction, Chennai once again had its plans in place. They came in with a set plan, needing seven slots to fill (including two overseas players), and added the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Stokes, Kyle Jamieson, along with few uncapped players (Shaik Rasheed, Ajay Mandal, Bhagath Verma and Nishant Sindhu).

After the end of the IPL 2023 auction for the CSK line-up, they have assembled a brilliant squad with many all-rounders, despite not being able to reacquire Sam Curran (who went to the Punjab Kings for INR 18.5 crore). Their squad includes openers Devon Conway, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, able batters such as Ambati Rayudu, and Rahane, all-rounders comprising Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Kyle Jamieson, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner, Stokes, Shivam Mavi, etc. Deepak Chahar, also a power-hitter, will spearhead their bowling line-up with handy wicket-taking options such as Maheesh Theekshana, Mukesh Choudhary, Matheesha Pathirana, and the likes. They did miss out on re-buying Curran and Holder and even tried hard to add Mayank Agarwal to their line-up, however, CSK have serious depth in their arsenal for next year's IPL.

Fast-bowling all-rounder and T20 stalwart Dwayne Bravo on Friday ended his IPL playing career and signed up with four-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings, a team he represented from 2011-15 and 2018-22, as their bowling coach ahead of IPL 2023.

"I`m looking forward to this new journey because it`s something I see myself doing after my playing days are fully over. I enjoy working with bowlers and it`s a role I`m excited about. From player to coach, I don`t think I have to adjust much because while I`m playing, I always work with bowlers and try to come up with plans and ideas on how to have that one step ahead of the batsmen."

"The only difference is I will no longer be standing at mid-on or mid-off! I never thought I would be the leading wicket-taker in the history of IPL. But I`m just happy to be a part of IPL history!" said Bravo in an official statement.

Bravo had played in the tournament since its inception in 2008. He ends his IPL playing career as the leading wicket-taker of the competition with 183 scalps from 161 matches, averaging 23.82 and at an economy rate of 8.38.

He has also scored 1560 runs at a strike rate of 129.57, playing key parts in many victories for the Super Kings with his hard-hitting batting. Bravo will be stepping in as Chennai`s bowling coach with Lakshmipathy Balaji is taking a break for one year due to personal commitments. Balaji, the former India pacer, will be available for the Super Kings Academy.

'Everything is fine': Ravindra Jadeja rubbishes rift rumours with MS Dhoni-led CSK after being retained

The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have retained all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2023. Before the mini-auction, on December 23, all ten IPL teams released their list of retained and released players. Among the released players, CSK management has let go of Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa (who retired early this year), Chris Jordan, and the likes.

Releasing Bravo and Chris Jordan came as a surprise for many. They also have a lot of all-rounders including Moeen, Shivam Dube, Deepak Chahar, Moeen, Jadeja, Santner, Dwaine Pretorius, etc.

IPL 2023: MS Dhoni-led CSK retain Ravindra Jadeja, release Dwayne Bravo, Chris Jordan

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a mini player auction ahead of the start of the new season in 2023. Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final last season to lift their maiden IPL trophy in their debut campaign after successfully executing their strategies in the mega auction last year.

As per a report in the Times of India, the 2023 IPL auction is set to be held on December 16 in Bengaluru. IPL is also set to return to the traditional home and away format from next season and is likely to be staged entirely in India like last season.

Unlike the mega auction last time around where the eight old teams were asked to retain a maximum of four players, there will be no such cap on the ten teams this time. All ten teams can release and retain as many players as they like considering the budget in mind.

The overall purse of each team will be increased by Rs 5 crore (INR 50 million) from Rs 90 crore (INR 900 million) to Rs 95 crore (INR 950 million) for the 2023 mini-auction. If a team decides to release none of their players, they will be left with the amount they had saved in the mega auction last year and the additional Rs 5 crore allotted to them.

Punjab Kings currently have the largest purse among all ten teams with Rs 3.45 crore (INR 34.5 million) remaining in their kitty followed by Chennai Super Kings (Rs 29.5 million), Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rs 15.5 million), Rajasthan Royals (Rs 9.5 million), Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 4.5 million) and Gujarat Titans (Rs 15 million).

Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals were all left with only Rs 1 million after the mega auction last year while Lucknow Super Giants exhausted their entire purse.

Despite it being a mini auction, a number of big names are expected to go under the hammer ahead of the IPL 2023 season. The likes of England all-rounder Sam Curran and Cameron Green among others can headline the show with several big stars released by the franchises also expected to be in the fray.

The franchises will also have to take the final call on the injury replacements roped in by them before and during IPL 2022. The likes of Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians were among six teams who roped in injury replacements.

These teams will have to decide whether they want to retain their player or the replacement player, or both while keeping the squad limit in mind. All ten teams will have to submit their final list of retained and released players to the BCCI by November 15.

Having retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, the 41-year-old continues to make heads turn whenever he appears on the 22-yard cricket strip donning the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) jersey in the IPL. He will return to competitive cricket in IPL 2023 where he will hope to guide CSK to another title.

Over the years, Dhoni has been known for fulfilling various roles for Team India and his IPL franchises. Apart from his blitz as a wicketkeeper, batter, finisher, he is also known to be one of the most ideal leaders in world cricket. Under him, India won all three ICC trophies and even attained the No. 1 rank in ICC Test Rankings for the first time, in late 2009. He has even led CSK to four IPL titles along with two Champions League triumphs. Known as Captain Cool, Dhoni recently revealed why he is so cool on the field amid such high-pressure situations.

In an event, Dhoni asked the audience, "How many of you think your bosses are calm?". With only a few hands going up, the former Indian captain asserted, "Either they want to make brownie points or they are bosses themselves." He added, "Honestly, when we are on the field, we do not want to make any mistakes whether it's misfielding, dropped catches or any other mistake. I always try and get into their shoes to figure out why a player dropped a catch or why somebody misfielded. Getting angry does not help matters. There are already 40,000 people watching from the stands and crores of people watching the match (on TV, and streaming platforms). I had to see what the reason was (for fielding lapses)."

"If a player is 100 per cent attentive on the ground and he misses a catch despite that, I don't have a problem. Of course, I also want to see how many catches he took during practice before that.. if he had a problem somewhere and he is making efforts to get better or not. I used to focus on all these aspects instead of focusing on whether a catch was dropped. Maybe we lost a game because of that but the effort was always to try to step into their shoes," Dhoni said on Livfast.

"I am also human. I would feel the same way inside like you all felt. When you go out and play a match among yourselves, you would feel bad. We represent our country, so we would feel worse. But we always try and control our emotions," concluded the legendary cricketer.
