Gravitas: Did Canada PM Justin Trudeau turn down Indian government's generous Air India One offer?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who is still in New Delhi after his G20 participation may finally fly back this afternoon. The 51-year-old and his delegation were forced to stay back in the Indian Capital after their official aircraft encountered 'technical failures'.

Canada PM Justin Trudeau stuck in New Delhi due to jet's technical failures

In a display of diplomatic courtesy, the Indian government extended an offer of assistance to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after his official aircraft encountered technical difficulties during his visit to India for the G20 summit. Prime Minister Trudeau's visit to India, which commenced on September 8, was marred by an unexpected turn of events when his plane suffered a technical snag, stranding him in Delhi for over 36 hours.

He left Delhi, with his delegation on Tuesday at around 2 PM IST. The Indian government, acting swiftly and proactively, offered the services of India's official aircraft, Air India One, to facilitate Trudeau's immediate departure.

Air India One, also known as India 1, is operated by the Indian Air Force and is reserved for use by the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister of India.

However, Canada's response to India's generous offer raised eyebrows. It took six hours for Canada to convey their regret and decline the offer, stating their intention to await the arrival of their own aircraft.

This delay in response added an element of intrigue to the already complicated diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

The development coincided with a controversial referendum held by pro-Khalistani elements in Surrey, Canada, on Sunday. This development raised eyebrows in India, particularly because it occurred on the same day that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Justin Trudeau met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Delhi.

India offered Air India One to stranded Canadian PM Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his delegation, who were initially slated to depart from New Delhi on Sunday (September 10), left for Canada on Tuesday afternoon around 2 pm IST (September 11).

This makes Trudeau the last leader to fly out of India after the grand G-20 Summit held in New Delhi on September 9 and 10.

The underlying cause of the delay has been attributed to technical issues with their aircraft.

Earlier, CBC News reported that the Canadian Air Force's CC-150 Polaris plane, which was on its way to pick up Trudeau, was also diverted to London.

This is not the first instance where challenges have arisen during a visit by the Canadian Prime Minister to India.

In 2018, a convicted person who had attempted to assassinate an Indian politician on Canadian soil was inadvertently included on Canada's guest list for an event, as reported by Bloomberg.

Amid strained relations between India and Canada, the recent snag incident unfolded. New Delhi has consistently raised concerns over Toronto's inaction against Khalistani elements, often linking it to the Trudeau government's pursuit of a voter base.

During discussions on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his apprehensions to Trudeau regarding the ongoing activities of Khalistani elements on Canadian soil.

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement, noting, "He (PM Modi) conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. They are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises, and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship."

However, Trudeau remained non-committal regarding action against Khalistani elements, stating, "Canada would always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest."

On the same day, an anti-India referendum was held at the Guru Nanak Singh Gurdwara in Canada's Surrey, featuring the presence of Khalistani separatist and Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Trudeau's India trip was relatively low-key, with his absence from the G20 leaders' dinner on Saturday raising questions. While the Canadian PMO did not disclose the reason, CTV News reported the development.

An awkward moment occurred during the event when G20 leaders paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. PM Modi attempted to hold Trudeau's hand, but Trudeau withdrew, as reported by CTV News.

Trudeau, who did shake PM Modi's hand, was the sole leader to withdraw from the extended handhold, according to the report. When asked about it, the Canadian Prime Minister suggested that people could interpret the gesture as they wished.

In a trial that holds significant implications for Canada's approach to far-right extremism, prosecutors have asserted that the man accused of murdering four members of a Muslim family was driven by white nationalist beliefs and intended to commit an act of "terrorism".

Nathaniel Veltman, 22, faces four counts of murder and one of attempted murder following the tragic incident that unfolded on June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario, reported The Guardian.

On that evening, Veltman allegedly drove his truck into five members of the Afzaal family as they were out for a walk.

The victims included Salman Afzaal (46), his wife Madiha Salman (44), their 15-year-old daughter Yumna, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal.

While the four lost their lives in the attack, the couple's nine-year-old son sustained serious injuries but survived.

Complex legal charges

Veltman, despite admitting to killing the four Afzaal family members, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Additionally, he faces terrorism charges. These charges, brought under Canada's anti-terrorism laws, require the prosecution to demonstrate that Veltman's actions were motivated by politics, religion, or ideology and that they aimed to intimidate or induce fear in the public.

Prosecution's account

During opening statements in the city of Windsor, prosecutor Sarah Shaikh alleged that Veltman meticulously planned the attack over three months.

He drove his Dodge Ram truck directly at the family, accelerating with unwavering determination, "because they were Muslims," Shaikh contended. Veltman, an egg farmer from Strathroy, had reportedly purchased the vehicle just two weeks prior.

Shaikh further asserted that Veltman confessed to leaving his home on the day of the attack with the intention of targeting Muslims.

He claimed inspiration from the 2019 Christchurch shootings, in which a white nationalist killed 51 individuals. Veltman had authored a manifesto titled "A White Awakening" and identified himself as a white nationalist. The police discovered two versions of this document on his computer during a search of his residence.

"I don't regret what I did. I admit that it was terrorism. This was politically motivated, 100%," Veltman allegedly told detectives, indicating his ideological motive.

During the assault, Veltman wore body armour and a helmet while concealing bladed weapons in his truck, the prosecution revealed. After the attack, he left the scene and sought out a taxi driver at a nearby mall to call the police. "It's me. It was me that did it," Veltman purportedly confessed to the driver, adding, "Tell them I did it and come and arrest me."

After almost 24 hours, Canada's Trudeau still remains stranded in India

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his delegation could not depart and were forced to extend their stay in New Delhi after Trudeau's aircraft suffered technical issues.

The Canadian prime minister, who attended the G20 Summit in New Delhi, was scheduled to depart on Sunday.

As per news agency ANI, airport sources in Delhi said that “a special plane of Canada PM suffered a technical glitch and it’s not in the schedule to fly.”

“Canadian authority in the country is exploring alternate fly mode,” ANI quoted an airport official as saying.

"Upon our departure for the airport, we were made aware by the Canadian Armed Forces that CFC001 was experiencing technical issues," a statement from the prime minister's office said, referring to the plane.

At the conclusion of the two-day summit, he underlined that India is an important partner for Canada and we will continue to work towards it.

"We recognise India as an extraordinarily important economy in the world and an important partner for Canada on everything, from fighting climate change to creating growth and prosperity for citizens. There is always a lot of work to do and we will continue to do it," Trudeau said.

Kyiv, on Sunday (September 10) blamed Russia for the death of two aid workers, one Canadian and the other Spanish, in eastern Ukraine. It was previously reported that Russian shelling hit a van which was carrying a team of four people working with a Ukrainian non-governmental organisation near the war-battered city of Bakhmut.

What do we know about the aid workers’ death?

Kyiv accused Moscow’s troops of killing Emma Igual, a Spanish citizen, and Anthony Ihnat, a Canadian citizen, both working for the NGO Road to Relief. They said two German citizens working for the aid group had also been injured after the Russian shelling in the eastern Donetsk region.

The organisation on its Instagram page said that the volunteers were helping evacuate the wounded from the front-line areas and were trapped inside the van as it flipped over and caught fire after being struck by shells near the two of Chasiv Yar.

The other two volunteers were identified as German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick and Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, who were seriously wounded, according to the organisation.

At the time, they also said that the organisation was unable to find the van’s fourth passenger, Igual. The death of the 32-year-old Spanish citizen, who was also the organisation’s director, was confirmed by Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.

“Unfortunately, I can confirm a missile hit a vehicle in which this Spanish worker was travelling who was working for a humanitarian NGO in Ukraine.
‘A painful, irreparable loss’: Kyiv

The Ukrainian officials called the deaths of the two volunteers, “a painful, irreparable loss” and said that the aid workers had dedicated themselves to limiting the harm to civilians caught in the conflict. The volunteers also carried out evacuations and distributed humanitarian relief to those affected, said the officials in Kyiv.

Ukraine blames Russia for deaths of Spanish and Canadian foreign aid workers

Indian students protesting in Canada over the housing crisis have finally been given relief by the authorities.

The protests began Tuesday (Sept. 5) at the campus of Canadore College in the town of North Bay in Ontario. However, by Thursday (Sept. 7), the students had reached an agreement with the college authorities, who received assurances that the demands of students seeking affordable accommodation would be taken care of.

The protesting students had been living in tents pitched near the college grounds. The new college year in Canada begins in September, and has witnessed an influx of over 3,500 international students. But, given that North Bay is a small-sparsely populated town, students are having a hard time finding affordable accommodation, thanks to inflated rents due to massive inflation.

The Montreal Youth Students' Organization or MYSO, which backed the protesting students, has termed the situation as ‘housing crisis.’

Agreement reached

The college authorities have claimed that all those protesting at the campus will be housed. The media outlet North Bay Today cited a college spokesperson as saying, “All of the Canadore students involved in the demonstrations this week at the Commerce Court Campus are currently being housed.”

It added, “Canadore continues to work with all students to find appropriate accommodation. We will provide a more fulsome update next week.”

The idea was immediately rejected by the universities. Notably, Canada accepted a record number of 800,000 students last year, a 75 per cent increase from five years ago.

The government believes the influx of these students has exacerbated the housing crisis in the country. The housing crisis is especially dire in cities like Toronto, where a six-figure annual income is needed to afford a house.

Canadian government appoints judge to lead public inquiry into foreign interference

Canada on Thursday named an appeal's court judge to lead a public inquiry into allegations of foreign meddling -- including by China -- in its elections.

Quebec Court of Appeal Justice Marie-Josee Hogue's appointment follows the sudden resignation in June of another official tapped to investigate the claims in a less formal way.

"Foreign interference in Canadian democratic institutions is unacceptable," Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc told a news conference.

"Justice Hogue will be tasked with examining and assessing interference by China, Russia and other foreign states and non-state actors," he said.

She will have broad investigative powers and, according to Leblanc, will be expected "to follow the evidence" as she probes "any potential impacts on the 2019 and 2021 general elections."

Canada-China relations hit a new low this year amid accusations of Chinese meddling in Canada's last two elections and the attempted intimidation of MPs that led to the expulsion of a Chinese diplomat in May.

Beijing has called the accusations "groundless," and responded by sending home a Canadian diplomat from Canada's consulate in Shanghai.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority liberal government initially balked at holding a public inquiry, as it faced pressure to explain how it first responded to the claims that Beijing sought to subvert Canada's democratic process.

The reported accusations included secret campaign donations and Chinese operatives working for Canadian candidates or lawmakers in an attempt to influence policy.

More recently, it emerged that Beijing sought to intimidate an opposition Canadian lawmaker and his relatives in Hong Kong over his criticisms of China.

The Tory MP, Michael Chong, is scheduled to testify about his experience at a US congressional hearing next week.

Former governor general David Johnston was originally tasked with looking into the claims, but quit after 12 weeks, citing a "highly partisan atmosphere around my appointment and work."

Opposition parties accused him of being too close to Trudeau and demanded an independent public inquiry instead.

Some also pressed to have its scope broadened to include Russia, Iran and others hostile to Canada.

Before resigning, Johnston released a draft report in which he concluded Beijing sought to interfere in Canada's 2019 and 2021 ballots, but failed to change the outcome of the votes.

Hogue's nomination comes after months of negotiations between the government and opposition parties on the public inquiry's terms of reference and who should lead it.

LeBlanc said she has the support of all parties.

She is to release an initial report in February 2024 and a final version ahead of a ballot expected the following year.

Former governor general David Johnston was originally tasked with looking into the claims, but quit after 12 weeks, citing a "highly partisan atmosphere around my appointment and work." Opposition parties accused him of being too close to Trudeau and demanded an independent public inquiry instead. Canada to probe China's alleged interference in elections

A recent survey indicates a remarkable transformation unfolding in the retirement aspirations of non-resident Indians. Traditionally, the dream for many NRIs had been to settle in economically developed countries like the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, or the UK. However, India's rapid progress towards achieving developed nation status, coupled with its resilience during global challenges, is reshaping the retirement landscape.

Impact of India's growing economy: India, the hotspot for retirement?

The organisers of the so-called 'Khalistan Referendum' in Canada faced a significant setback as Canadian authorities revoked permission to conduct the purported vote that calls for India's division.

Originally scheduled for September 10 at Tamanawis Secondary School in Surrey, British Columbia, the event's cancellation was announced by a spokesperson for the Surrey District School Board who cited a purported violation of the rental agreement.

The reason for withdrawing permission was the inclusion of images of the school alongside images of a weapon in promotional materials for the event, which prominently featured both an AK-47 machine gun and a kirpan.

The event organisers did not remove these problematic images, and the materials continued to circulate in Surrey and on social media.

The decision was communicated to the event organisers, with a clear emphasis on the school district's primary mission to provide quality education, support students, and maintain a safe environment for school communities. This mission is upheld through agreements, policies, and guidelines, including those for rentals, which must be adhered to by anyone renting the facilities.

Maninder Gill, president of the Surrey-based Friends of Canada and India Foundation, expressed his organisation's approval of the decision.

Canada: So-called 'Khalistan Referendum' discredited again for show of AK-47 in promotional material

In a surprise move, Canada on Friday unexpectedly paused talks on a proposed trade treaty with India, just three months after the two nations said they aimed to seal an initial agreement this year.

In just a week, the world’s attention will converge on New Delhi as the Indian capital plays host to its inaugural G20 Summit, an event that has drawn global leaders to address some of the most pressing issues of our time. As anticipation builds, the international community eagerly awaits confirmation from leaders, understanding that attendance dynamics are shaped by geopolitics and domestic priorities.

Delving into the annals of G20 Summit history reveals a remarkable consistency – since 2010, there hasn’t been a single instance where all member countries attended at the head of state/head of government (HOS/HOG) or leaders level. This pattern underscores the complexity of factors influencing leaders’ decisions to attend these pivotal gatherings.

The variability in attendance becomes even more striking when examining specific instances of countries being represented below the leadership level. On six occasions, a single leader from a country was absent (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017), while on five occasions, two leaders chose not to attend (2010, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019).

The 2021 Rome Summit stands out as an anomaly, with a record-breaking six leaders skipping the G20 meeting. This occurred even as the world was recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when leaders faced critical domestic challenges.

In contrast, the 2022 Bali Summit saw three leaders absent, overshadowed by the Ukraine conflict. Notably, this summit marked the first time the traditional “leaders’ family photo” was absent, as Western leaders hesitated to stand alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Examining individual country data reveals a spectrum of commitment to G20 Summit attendance. Nations such as Canada, Germany, India, Italy, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, the USA, and the European Union have consistently upheld leadership-level attendance, underscoring their dedication to the global stage.

In contrast, some nations have experienced sporadic attendance. Mexico, for instance, has been represented by a minister since 2018 instead of its president.

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and Russia each have had two instances of lower-level representation, while China, France, Indonesia, Japan, and South Africa have experienced a single such occurrence. A notable exception is Saudi Arabia, which attended G20 summits below the leadership level on nine occasions, including one instance featuring a Minister of State without portfolio in 2017.

Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t attended a G20 summit in person since the 2019 Osaka summit. He was notably absent from the Italy (2021) and Indonesia (2022) summits and is set to skip the upcoming India (2023) summit. G20 summit in Delhi: Trends show gaps in leaders’ attendance each year

Drivers in Canada's Toronto were on Wednesday (August 30) warned to keep their car windows closed after a truck spilt crates carrying five million bees onto a road. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the Halton Regional Police said they received a call early Wednesday that bee crates had come loose from a truck and spilt onto Guelph Line, north of Dundas Street, in Burlington.

It was “quite the scene,” Constable Ryan Anderson said, adding that crates were on the road and swarms of bees were flying around. The initial beekeeper who was present at the scene was stung a few times, Anderson said.

An hour later, the regional police put out a notice on social media and several beekeepers approached the police to help. Six or seven beekeepers eventually arrived at the scene, the police official further said.

By 9.15 am Wednesday, police said most of the five million bees were safely collected and the crates were being hauled away. Some crates had been left behind for the uncollected bees to return to them on their own.

It was reported that these bees might have been a part of a pollination service, in which farmers hire beekeepers to help pollinate their crops.

Canada: Five million bees fall off truck near Toronto, cops call beekeepers for help

Canada has issued a travel advisory to its LGBTQI+ community citizens who are planning to visit the United States.

The advisory was reportedly issued due to the rising number of anti-LGBT protests and legal measures that restrict LGBT rights in the country.

Advisory

On its website, Global Affairs Canada has issued a specific warning for "2SLGBTQI+".

Here, "2SLGBTQI+" is used to refer to people who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex.

Canada's US travel advice page warns that, "Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons. Check relevant state and local laws."

Such travel advisories as per the BBC are typically reserved for countries like Uganda, Russia, or Egypt.

Talking to CBS news, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada pointed to the many laws enacted by US states targeting the transgender community.

"Since the beginning of 2023, certain states in the US have passed laws banning drag shows and restricting the transgender community from access to gender-affirming care and from participation in sporting events," said the spokesperson.

Addressing the government's decision to issue the advisory, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasised the importance of protecting "particular groups of Canadians".

She said that the government employed experts "to look carefully around the world and to monitor whether there are particular dangers to particular groups of Canadians".

However, as per BBC, she did not comment on whether discussions were held with the US government before implementing the advisory.

Anti-trans laws and the USA

In the US, many states have passed hundreds of regulations imposing restrictions on transgender individuals.

In March, Tennessee governor Bill Lee signed laws banning drag performances in front of children and restricting medical treatment for transgender youth.

Just two months later, in May, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a similar bill that banned children from undergoing gender-conforming medical treatments. It also restricted the use of pronoun use in classrooms and stopped children from attending drag shows.

Similarly, the previous year (2022) saw conservative states like Texas, Utah, pass regulations limiting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.

These measures have drawn concern and criticism from activists and advocacy groups like Human Rights Campaign, who argue that the LGBT community in America was facing a state of emergency as states continue targeting them with legislation.

Canada has detected its first case of coronavirus infection from the highly mutated BA.2.86 variant of Omicron in a person in British Columbia who had not travelled outside the Pacific province, health officials said on Tuesday.

The individual is not hospitalised, and the detection of BA.2.86 virus has not changed the risk to people in British Columbia, the province's top doctor, Bonnie Henry, and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement.

"It was not unexpected for BA.2.86 to show up in Canada and the province," they said. "COVID-19 continues to spread globally, and the virus continues to adapt."

The BA.2.86 lineage, first detected in Denmark last month, carries more than 35 mutations in key portions of the virus compared with XBB.1.5, the dominant variant through most of 2023. The United States, Switzerland and Israel have also recorded cases of the new variant.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week the BA.2.86 variant may be more capable of causing infection in people who have previously had COVID-19 or who have received preventive vaccines.

Scientists have said that while it was important to monitor BA.2.86, it was unlikely to cause a devastating wave of severe disease and death given immune defences built up worldwide from vaccination and prior infection.

Canada detects first case of highly mutated coronavirus variant BA.2.86

Facebook parent Meta is facing allegations that it is endangering lives by blocking news links in Canada just when the country is fighting devastating wildfires.

The situation "is dangerous," said Kelsey Worth, 35), one of nearly 20,000 residents of Yellowknife and thousands more in small towns ordered to evacuate the Northwest Territories as wildfires advanced.

She described to AFP how "insanely difficult" it has been for herself and other evacuees to find verifiable information about the fires blazing across the near-Arctic territory and other parts of Canada.

"Nobody's able to know what's true or not," she said.

"And when you're in an emergency situation, time is of the essence," she said, explaining that many Canadians until now have relied on social media for news.

Meta has started blocking distribution of news links and articles from August 1 in response to recent law that requires digital giants to pay news publishers for their news content.

The company has been in a virtual showdown with Ottawa over the bill passed in June, but which only takes effect next year.

Building on similar legislation introduced in Australia, the bill aims to support a struggling Canadian news sector that has seen a flight of advertising dollars and hundreds of publications closed in the last decade.

It requires companies like Meta and Google to make fair commercial deals with Canadian outlets for the news and information -- estimated in a report to parliament to be worth Can$330 million (US$250 million) per year -- that is shared on their platforms, or face binding arbitration.

But Meta has said the bill is flawed and insisted that news outlets share content on its Facebook and Instagram platforms to attract readers, benefiting them and not the Silicon Valley firm.

Facebook parent Meta is facing allegations that it is endangering lives by blocking news links in Canada just when the country is fighting devastating wildfires.

Fourteen whales and one dolphin have died at Marineland, the theme park in Ontario, Canada, since 2019. The Ministry of the Solicitor General created a list containing the details about the deaths of these animals following information requests. Two of these 15 marine mammals were among the tourist place's beluga whales. Furthermore, 12 deaths occurred within a two-year window. According to the documents, a beluga whale named Ikora died on 24 October, 2019, followed by 10 others. Then, a beluga named Bull died on 23 November, 2021, The Canadian Press reported. The ministry also confirmed the deaths of Kiska, the park's lone killer whale, a dolphin, and another beluga. They declared all the marine animals were in distress. In 2021, the province asked the park to improve the water quality for the marine animals. However, Marineland appealed that its animals were not in distress. They also refused any connection between the whale deaths and water conditions. Their website states they prioritise the health and wellbeing of their animals. The investigation at the provincial level started in January 2020, and Animal Welfare Services inspectors have visited the park at least 160 times. Marineland has not commented on the health of its animals. According to the reports, they have made several changes to the theme park. They have trimmed the duration of the dolphin and sea lion shows. According to the staff, there are 37 belugas at the park. Among them, nine male belugas swim in Friendship Cove, and 28 female belugas swim in Arctic Cove. Two of the five belugas moved in 2021 have died, prompting a probe by the US government. After the passing of its founder, John Holer, in 2018, Marie Holer took over the ownership of Marineland. Earlier this year, the park announced that it was up for sale. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Hundreds of wildfires are filling the skies with smoke in the Canadian province of British Columbia. This has led to millions being put under air quality warnings. The wildfires, which analysts say are a result of climate change, increase concerns about the impact on human health.

Over 35,000 forced to evacuate as wildfires spread in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday (August 20) that the administration has planned to deploy the military to tackle fast-spreading wildfires in British Columbia, as the western province deals with flames that have led to evacuation orders for more than 35,000 people.

British Columbia declared a state of emergency and put a prohibition on non-essential travel to free up lodging for evacuees and firefighters. It also asked drone operators and others to take pictures of the fires to avoid approaching rescue personnel.

After spending the previous four days battling the devastating fires, West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund expressed some optimism.

He claimed that as a result, firefighters were able to put "boots on the ground" and pour water on the fires that threatened the town of 150,000 residents.
