While the idea that early Americans may have travelled along the Pacific Coast isn’t new, the conditions were not exactly favourable. In 2020, researchers noted that freshwater from melting glaciers at the time may have created a strong current which would make it difficult for people to travel along the coast.

In line with this, Summer Praetorius the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and her team tried to study climate proxies in ocean sediment from the coast. Archaeologists have previously found evidence of coastal settlements as early as 14,000 years ago.&nbsp;

Although most of the data for Praetorius’ study came from tiny, fossilised plankton, researchers also used climate models to check ocean currents at the time. The abundance and chemistry of these organisms helped scientists reconstruct ocean temperatures, salinity, and sea ice cover.

<h2>What did they find?</h2>

Praetorious’ team found that ocean currents were twice the strength they are today at the height of the last glacial maximum around 20,000 years ago due to glacial winds and lower sea levels, conditions which would have made travelling by boat nearly impossible.&nbsp;

Therefore, Praetorius suggests that since&nbsp;people back then who were adapted to the cold, would “rather than having to paddle against this horrible glacial current, maybe they were using the sea ice as a platform.” Similar to how people living in the Arctic travel along sea ice on dog sleds and snowmobiles.&nbsp;

Early Americans could have used the ‘sea ice highway’ to get around and hunt marine mammals, slowly making their way into North America in the process, said Praetorius.&nbsp;

While proving this will be difficult given that most of the archaeological sites are underwater, the recently proposed theory does provide a new framework.&nbsp;

The USGS scientist also noted that the sea ice highway isn’t mutually exclusive with other human migrations which took place later since their models show the Alaskan current had calmed down by 14,000 years ago, making it easier for people to travel by boat along the coast.

A Canadian youth was charged and arrested with terrorism related offences in connection with antisemitism activity, which has been witnessing&nbsp;a spike across the world after the Israel-Hamas war.

The police arrested the youth, whose information has not been shared citing the accused’s age, on Friday (Dec 15) for facilitating terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance, CTV News reported.

The accused is further charged with knowingly instructing a person to carry out terrorist activity against "Jewish persons”, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a press release.

Noting the rise of using the internet in terrorism-related activities, the police said it has arrested five young people on such offences since June 2023.

The police said that these activities are especially prevalent among young people, urging the adults in authority positions to watch for early warning signs of radicalisation.

“Those include dehumanisation of others, extreme anti-government attitudes and clear statements of intention to carry out violent acts,” the statement added.

The team identified minerals in the rocks indicating changes in the magnetic field over time—a clear sign of rock formations being pulled apart or broken, strongly implying the presence of a fault line.

If an earthquake were to occur along this fault line, it could unleash a tsunami with catastrophic consequences for approximately 400,000 inhabitants in the Greater Victoria region of Canada and potentially impact cities along the US West Coast, including Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, and Tacoma, the findings of the report said.&nbsp;

Canadian authorities are on the lookout for a 60-year-old Sikh truck driver who fled to India after he was convicted of smuggling nearly 80 kg of cocaine into Canada from the United States, reported the local media.

Raj Kumar Mehmi was sentenced to 15-year-imprisonment in absentia by a provincial court in British Columbia earlier in November this year after he was arrested in the year 2017 for smuggling a controlled substance, the CBC reported on Wednesday (Dec 13).

However, on Oct 11, just a month before he could be sentenced, he boarded a flight to New Delhi from Vancouver,&nbsp;reported the&nbsp;Vancouver Sun.

Arash Seyed, a spokesman with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's (RCMP) federal serious and organised crime division said that a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Mehmi.

"If you locate this suspect or have information regarding his whereabouts, please do not approach him and contact your local police agency," Seyed said announcing the warrant in Surrey on Wednesday, as per CBC.

A red notice has also been issued in his name which asks member countries to help locate, arrest and extradite Mehmi to face criminal charges in Canada.

Mehmi, in a separate release, was described as 185cm in height (just over six feet tall) and weighing 91 kilogrammes.

"During their search, CBSA officers found 80 bricks of cocaine inside the sleeper cab of the commercial vehicle," the agency's Pacific region director Holly Stoner said.

"The driver was arrested and taken into custody."

"There are certain conditions where an individual may be granted a passport, such as emergency situations," Seyed was quoted as saying by CBC.

Canada: Sikh driver flees to India after being convicted for smuggling cocaine

Black people in Canada's Toronto are immoderately being stopped and checked by police, a new report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission has found.

The commission’s report, which released on Thursday (Dec 14)&nbsp;concerning anti-Black racism incidents that take place within the Toronto Police Service, stated that even though the official street checks were fully eradicated from the system, Black people still reported being stopped and searched at a much larger frequency than the ones from other racial groups.

Nearly two years after the provincial regulation put a ban on the official street checks, a survey in 2019 found that around 40.4 per cent of Black respondents reported being stopped by the police at least once in the last two years, as compared to 24.7 per cent of white respondents and 24.9 per cent of Asian respondents, as per the Canadian Press reports.

The report highlighted that one of the problems was the presence of "significant gaps" between the provincial regulations and Toronto police policies and procedures that govern the interactions that take place between the public, particularly when it comes to stops and searches.

It also stated that Toronto police gathered and maintained "significant personal data" via the street checks before the provincial rules came into effect.

It further said that this data should be destroyed unless and until required for investigative purposes.

The commission has so far issued more than 100 recommendations to enhance police interactions with Black communities.

"I am cautiously optimistic that, if adopted, the OHRC's recommendations will help reduce systemic racism, improve public transparency and police oversight, and begin to foster a relationship of trust between the TPS and Toronto’s Black communities," Dr Scot Wortley, a professor of criminology and socio-legal studies at the University of Toronto who provided analysis for the report, wrote in a statement, according to the Canadian Press.

The probe into anti-Black racism within Toronto police was launched in the year 2017 and earlier released two interim reports – one in 2018 and one in 2020.

The report that came out in the year 2020 found that Black people were more likely than others to be arrested, charged or shot by the Toronto police.

Black people in Canada's Toronto are immoderately being stopped and checked by police, a new report by the Ontario Human Rights Commission has found. The commission’s report, which released on Thursday (Dec 14) concerning anti-Black racism incidents that take place within the Toronto Police Service, stated that even though the official street checks were fully eradicated from the system, Black people still reported being stopped and searched at a much larger frequency than the ones from other racial groups. Nearly two years after the provincial regulation put a ban on the official street checks, a survey in 2019 found that around 40.4 per cent of Black respondents reported being stopped by the police at least once in the last two years, as compared to 24.7 per cent of white respondents and 24.9 per cent of Asian respondents, as per the Canadian Press reports. The report highlighted that one of the problems was the presence of "significant gaps" between the provincial regulations and Toronto police policies and procedures that govern the interactions that take place between the public, particularly when it comes to stops and searches. It also stated that Toronto police gathered and maintained "significant personal data" via the street checks before the provincial rules came into effect. It further said that this data should be destroyed unless and until required for investigative purposes. The commission has so far issued more than 100 recommendations to enhance police interactions with Black communities. "I am cautiously optimistic that, if adopted, the OHRC's recommendations will help reduce systemic racism, improve public transparency and police oversight, and begin to foster a relationship of trust between the TPS and Toronto’s Black communities," Dr Scot Wortley, a professor of criminology and socio-legal studies at the University of Toronto who provided analysis for the report, wrote in a statement, according to the Canadian Press. The probe into anti-Black racism within Toronto police was launched in the year 2017 and earlier released two interim reports – one in 2018 and one in 2020. As a result, she was sent back home and her health continued to tumble. In the fall of the same year, she had to be rushed to the hospital after suffering intense chest pains and struggling to catch her breath for over 36 hours.&nbsp;

Thompson somehow managed to survive that particular onslaught but the treatment depleted her finances. With her health not improving, she kept losing money without any source of income.

In line with the new rules, Canberra will require international students to achieve higher scores on English proficiency tests. The students applying for a graduate visa will require a score of 6.5 points, up from 6.0, while student visa applicants will need a 6.0, up from 5.5.

The Australian government said it would set up a new specialist visa for highly skilled workers which would cut the processing time to one week, in a bid to help businesses recruit top migrants amid tough competition with other developed economies.

Australia, which has become one of the tightest labour markets in the world, has been long reliant on immigration.&nbsp;

The government believes the new pathway, which will be open to eligible applicants earning at least $135,000 in any occupation aside from trade workers, machinery operators and drivers, and labourers, will add $3.4 billion to the country’s budget over the next decade.

The government had previously sought to limit the number of hours that international students can work while studying in Canada.&nbsp;

“The waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is in session will be extended to April 30, 2024,” said Miller.&nbsp;

The IRCC might set the limit to 30 hours per week moving forward, said Miller, while also ruling out the possibility of full-time work for international students while they are studying.&nbsp;

International education contributes more than $22 billion in economic activity every year and supports more than 200,000 jobs in Canada, according to the government.&nbsp;

While health and social care, which are highly reliant on immigrant staff, are exempt from the salary rule, care workers from overseas will no longer be able to bring dependent relatives with them. The restriction has raised concerns in the industry that fewer will want to come to the UK.&nbsp;

“Migrant workers were encouraged to come here because both sectors are critically short of staff. Hospitals and care homes simply couldn’t function without them,” said Christina McAnea, general secretary of the Unison trade union.&nbsp;

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a recent interview, has claimed that the allegations he levelled against India over its involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar were intended to "put a chill" on New Delhi amid strained diplomatic ties between the two countries.

While speaking to the Canadian Press in a year-end interview, Trudeau said that the statement he made on September&nbsp;18 in the House of Commons was meant to place an extra 'level of deterrence' for India to refrain from carrying out such acts in the future.

He further said that he wanted the Canadians to know that the government was on top of the situation and proactively taking measures.

"Too many Canadians were worried that they were vulnerable," Trudeau said in the interview, adding that the Sikh community in British Columbia had been raising concerns since shortly after Nijjar was killed.

"We felt that all the quiet diplomacy and all the measures that we put in -- and ensured that our security services put in to keep people safe in the community, needed a further level of deterrence, perhaps of saying publicly and loudly that we know, or we have credible reasons to believe, that the Indian government was behind this," he said.

"And therefore put a chill on them continuing or considering doing anything like this," he added.

He also went on to claim that the Indian government chose to attack and undermine them with misinformation after he had made the allegations public and accused New Delhi of launching an information war.

"They chose to attack us and undermine us with a scale of misinformation and disinformation in their media that was comical," he said.

However, on being asked if the discussion with Modi on the issue was helpful, the Canadian Prime Minister replied with a "No".

"We knew it would be difficult conversation, but we also knew that this was an important moment for India to be demonstrating its leadership on the world stage with the G20," Trudeau said.

"And we felt that we could use that as a constructive opportunity to work together."

India's Ministry of External Affairs, which has recently constituted a high-level inquiry committee to probe the alleged murder plot against Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, maintains that Canada had given no evidence about its allegations and so the question of equitable treatment for the two countries does not arise.

There were plans to demolish the structure in the year 2018. However, the historic building was purchased by a real-estate company, Galaxy Properties. The company planned to move the hotel building to a new location. Multiple media reports have said that the company plans to connect the building to a new apartment that will be constructed.

<h2>Unique solution to a problem</h2>

The biggest problem was to move the entire structure safely without any harm to it. The responsibility was reportedly undertaken by S Rushton Construction- House Moving Experts.

For a smooth shift, the company used 700 Ivory soaps so that the building would gently glide over making use of the softness provided by the soaps. The soaps were used along with two large excavators and a wrecker.

Canada is intensifying financial requirements for international students seeking study permits, with Immigration Minister Marc Miller almost doubling the mandatory proof of funds. As part of the changes, the minimum bank account requirement for study permit applicants will increase from $10,000 to $20,635 in 2024, in addition to the tuition fees paid by international students, Canada's local media reports said.&nbsp;

Additionally, those who have already submitted study permit applications by December 7, 2023, and those currently in Canada will be allowed to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week until April 2024.&nbsp;The temporary lifting of the 20-hour work limit for international students, in place since last year, will now be extended until April 30, 2024.

In response to the high immigration and housing crisis, Miller has issued a stern warning, threatening significant restrictions on visas if provinces and educational institutions do not address the issue promptly.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Miller said that the federal government is willing to take drastic measures, including limiting visas, to ensure that designated learning institutions provide sufficient support for international students.

A Canadian cyclist has made a world record for the longest distance covered riding a bicycle hands-free. He covered 130.29 km (80.95 miles) without using his hands to steady the bicycle on the road and set a new world record for the longest distance cycled.

Robert Murray, a resident of Canada's Alberta province, covered the distance in 5 hours and 37 minutes on June 12 this year. The news about his feat was published by Guinness World Records on its website on Wednesday (Dec 6).

Murray's attempt at the world record was part of a fundraising campaign for the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary.&nbsp;

“Alzheimer’s is something that runs in my family, and I have since lost my grandma to the disease,” said Robert as quoted by Guinness World Records.

“Breaking a record and raising money for a cause near and dear to my heart was just a double win!”

<h2>A childhood hobby</h2>

Roberts's love for cycling developed during his childhood when he and his sister would travel 10 kms to attend swimming classes.

When he was 15, he saved money to buy his first road bike. He used the same bike to break the record.

“A lot of the parts have since been replaced but it’s the same frame,” he said.&nbsp;

“It has a lot of the same scratches and dents from all the times I have fallen off of it.”&nbsp;

As he cycled around in his teens, he soon learnt to ride the bike without using hands.

“Personally, I find it to be a more comfortable position to be in rather than hunched over,” he said as quoted by Guinness World Records.

“I can text, change the song, get anything out of my backpack all while riding my bike. It’s like second nature for me.”&nbsp;
