Ayushmann Khurrana-Anubhav Sinha's 'Anek' gets a release date

Ayushmann Khurrana's film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan released a year ago on this day. The same-sex love story cast him as a gay person. The Bollywood actor says it takes time and effort to normalise topics that are prone to be hushed up by society.

"Taboo topics need to be constantly addressed through our cinema because it can really help alter the mindset of people. It takes a lot of time and effort to normalise taboo subjects and bring about constructive changes in society. I`m glad that we tried to contribute towards making the conversation about same-sex relationships in India mainstream through Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan," Ayushmann said.

He added: "If it has had some impact on the minds of people, then we have done our job."

For him, the film was a success story because Indian families watched the film. "The fact that the film became a success, told me that people want to engage and have a conversation on such important subjects. The fact that Indian families came out and watched this film was the biggest success story for me because our families can contribute so much to foster a spirit of inclusivity when it comes to same-sex relationships," he said.

Ayushmann recalled how many people in the industry advised him not to sign the film.

"I was thrilled with the response towards this film because everyone told me I was doing a very tricky film and that no one would accept this kind of cinema. Instead, I was humbled with appreciation. The success of this film is in how it was accepted as a commercial film and how it has hopefully done its job to pave a path for many other films on such subjects to be made."

"I have always wanted to reach out and have a conversation with people about the subjects that I have addressed through my movies. I will continue doing that because it satiates me as an artiste and motivates me to discover more subjects like these," he concluded.
Abhishek Kapoor ropes in Ayushmann Khurrana for his next

Shoojit Sircar’s recent film ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ may have Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana playing the lead characters- but the film, written by Juhi Chaturvedi, also had a memorable supporting cast.

A story predominantly about two men who are constantly trying to outwit each other- the film’s women characters too stood out. From 86-year-old Farukh Jaffar- who played Fatima Begum, to Srishti Shrivastava- who played Guddo- the film’s women were individualistic and held their own in front of the men.

Srishti, a known face on the web thanks to numerous TVF sketches and series, played the strong, calculative Guddo with ease. Someone who knows her strengths and is ambitious unlike her brother Bankey (Khurrana) Guddo knew how to deal with men double her age – with charm, sensibility and confidence.

“Everybody in life needs a Guddo, including me,” said Srishti while speaking to WION recently. “I also need sometimes a reality check. Guddo is great. She is really someone you could look upto and if someone is doing too much nonsense, just make her stand there,” the actress said explaining her character.

Srishti’s performance won her praise from across but the actress said the high point was when Amitabh Bachchan sent her a handwritten letter praising and congratulating her for her performance after he watched the rough cut of the film. “I have so many actors getting that letter, and I dreamt of getting one someday. Isike liye kaam karna hai,” the elated actress said.

For Srishti, working with Amitabh Bachchan was a dream come true. A fan of the superstar like millions of others right from her school days, she recalls how starstruck she was when she first visited his residence with the rest of the crew. “It was during narration. Of course, I didnt show how nervous and excited I was but I was in awe for sure.” The next time she met Bachchan was on set. “We were waiting for our shot when he turned his personal fan towards me and said, “Madam aapko hawa to aa rahi hai na?” that moment was everything for me,” she said with excitement.

Srishti was also all praises for her onscreen brother Ayushmann Khurrana. “He is so much fun to be around, makes the set a happy place - he talks to everyone. One doesn’t feel a star is on set- he comes on set as an actor, chills with us, it was great.”

For Srishti, the toughest scene in the film was with actor Vijay Raaz. “I was anxious the night before for the scene. I had to understand the crux of it, understand why she is doing what she is doing, I remember Shoojit Sir explaining to me that that’s how she is. I went and sat on the set beforehand when Vijay Raaz came, there was so much give and take between the two us as actors- the scene became what it is. It turned out to be a fun scene eventually.”

Owing to her work on the web(including a viral video ‘Why Should Hot Girls Have All The Fun and series Girls Hostel) and her cameo in ‘Gully Boy’, many feel that Guddo was an extension of her real personality. Srishti, though, begs to differ. “People think I am badass and very direct and it comes to me easily. But the reality is I am not as badass and it doesn't come naturally to me. In real life, I am a different person.”

“I had to really work hard on Guddo. As a person, I am very eccentric and I want to do big things. Like on stage(she does theatre regularly) I have been asked to subdue by performance in terms of body language. Similarly, Guddo is less but is more at the same time. So it was fun finding that rhythm.”

Srishti feels that with the expansion of digital space in India, there’s a lot of work for actors now. She admits that digital has a wide variety of content to offer but the magic of cinema is unmatched.

She is four films old- including a memorable cameo in ‘Gully Boy’, and the actress candidly admits that she wants to play lead roles in films. “I became an actress because I wanted to play a heroine in Hindi films. Not here for people to call me and say that there’s a role of heroine's best friend, I want them to offer me lead roles. I want to do everything-sing and dance, I want fly- everything!” says the actress before signing out.

View this post on Instagram It was the 5th of March, at around 6pm, the doorbell rang. Speaking to an entertainment portal, Sircar revealed that his first narration of the script to Ayushmann was at an unsual place- Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone's wedding reception. "Yes, Ayushmann was the first choice but before that, we debated a lot. His casting was done later. First was Mr Bachchan's casting and then I remember I think I broke the news to him, I remember it was... Deepika Padukone's reception (laughs). So at that reception, I gave him the basic narration, I remember. And you know that's when we agreed (to do the film). He was excited, he was jumping since then."

Ayushmann Khurrana first heard of 'Gulabo Sitabo' at Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh's reception, reveals Shoojit Sircar

Every filmmaker in the Hindi film industry has at some point in his career thought of a film with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead. Over the years, Bachchan has played characters out of his comfort zone often- making each of these films memorable. But in every character that he plays, his looming star presence tends to peak out. You may enjoy watching him playing a Bhaskar Banerjee in 'Piku' or as Auro in 'Paa' but you know that its Amitabh Bachchan playing a character. In filmmaker Shoojit Sircar's 'Gulabo Sitabo' which premiers on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, the actor sheds his Bachchan-ess and transforms into Mirza, a character that Hindi cinema hasn't witnessed so far.

Mirza is 78, walks with a stoop, and lives in Lucknow's Fatima Mahal, a crumbling haveli that has left its glorious days far behind and which is now inhabited by the owners and numerous tenants who keep the dilapidated place bustling. Mirza's wife Begum(Farrukh Jafar) is the owner and he merely acts as a caretaker at the beginning of the film, but as the story progresses you realise he is a greedy man, for whom the haveli has for long been the only motivation to live. His hindrances in becoming the sole owner are many- first his wife, then his tenant Bankey(Ayushmann Khurrana) who lives with his mother and three sisters and hasn't paid the meager rent of Rs 30 for months. Mirza naturally wants both out of his life and haveli and finds himself squabbling over money with Bankey all day long.

When the film begins it appears to be a story about an uncanny pair- who cannot stand the sight of each other and are at loggerheads at all times. But an hour into the film, you realise it is much more than just about these two individuals. It's a story of greed, of the futility to materialistic needs, of upmanship and of a haveli that everyone wants a piece of. While Mirza calls in a lawyer Christopher Clarke(Bijendra Kala) to get rid of his tenants, Bankey befriends a govt official Shukla (Vijay Raaz) who introduces himself as 'archeology' to trade the haveli for a LIG flat. With multiple players eyeing the peeling, worn off haveli- things naturally get chaotic and unintentionally funny.

Writer Juhi Chaturvedi is known for her nuanced screenplay. She and Sircar have given us films like 'Piku', 'Vicky Donor' and 'October' in the past. In 'Gulabo Sitabo', she keeps the humour sly and never in your face. A lot of the funny moments are situational and come in one-liners in the local dialect. You get a sense of how sweetly the insults are thrown at people in typically Lucknawi andaaz as Mirza and Bankey argue like a married couple with empty threats and hilarious insults, like when Mirza out of disgust calls Bankey 'Dimak kahi ke! (You are a termite').

Bachchan and Khurrana's scenes are crackling. It isn't easy to stand your own in front of Bachchan, but Khurrana matches the superstar in every frame. The two actors play similar characters- both greedy, sullen and upset with life in general, willing to fight and give each other empty threats. Bachchan's character arc is greater and his scope of acting is more but Khurrana still manages to leave an impression. He is not playing his usual role of a common man heroically rising to the occasion. In 'Gulabo Sitabo', Khurrana is clearly out of his comfort zone as a man who is never happy with anything in life, is insecure about his lack of education and awareness, hates his job, and doesn't even get love from his girlfriend who at one point admits she wouldn't be with him if she knew he was poor beforehand.

In a film that has two men playing the leading characters, Chaturvedi also makes the women characters memorable. Be it Bankey's sister Guddo(Srishti Srivastava), or Begum (Farrukh Jafar) or even Bankey's weary girlfriend, the women have a bigger say in matters than the two men and are strong-willed individuals. Srivastav managed to make heads turn in her brief role in 'Gully Boy' and has been a known face on internet for a while. As the street smart Guddo, she is effective and impressive.

Farrukh Jafar as Begum is outstanding. She shines in her scenes, with limited dialogues but just the right amount of spunk and it is a delight to watch her. The scene where she and Mirza discuss her family is perhaps the high point of the film. So well enacted by both the actors- who are confident of their talent.

The film though belongs to Bachchan. Hiding behind a prosthetic nose, scarf, and a white goatee, Bachchan plays the ever conniving, slightly helpless, greedy Mirza with perfection. His walk, the way he makes his eyes light up every time he plots a new plan to outdo Bankey and his overall demeanor of a man who may physically be crumbling but is relentless in his pursuit- Bachchan gives a masterclass in acting. It's a pure delight to watch the man on screen.

Avik Mukhopadhyay, who has collaborated with Sircar previously captures Lucknow and the dilapidated haveli beautifully in his frame. The city and the haveli are important characters of the film, highlighting the lost glory of a wonderful era. Shantanu Moitra's background music is haunting and beautiful.

This is not Juhi Chaturvedi's best work. While she aces with her witty lines, her screenplay meanders. My only problem with the film was that it takes time to establish the plot. Its pace is leisurely and at the 2 hours runtime, the film appears a bit stretched. Sircar ultimately relies on his performers to narrate a layered satire and they do not disappoint.

The title 'Gulabo Sitabo' is based on popular folklore of two women by the same name who keep fighting over petty issues much like the two leads. Khurrana and Bachchan are great. So is the supporting cast that includes Raaz and Kala play the quintessential small-town govt officers to the hilt. The film though can be best enjoyed if you are aware of Lucknow or any other similar city in North India functions. The nuances are typical of a city that for centuries has been steeped in culture and now struggles to form a modern identity.

Sircar's film is the first major Bollywood film to have opted for the digital route amid the pandemic. There is naturally a lot of curiosity around it. One can't help but wonder how the film would have been received had it got a theatrical release because it doesn't offer a universal palate- instead, it unravels with multiple subtext and sly humour.

'Gulabo Sitabo' review: Amitabh Bachchan gives a master class in acting, Ayushmann holds his own

Shoot Sircar's film 'Gulabo Sitabo' has been accused of plagiarism. A person name Akira Agarwal, son of late writer Rajeev Agarwal has accused the film's writer Juhi Chaturvedi of plagiarising.

It has been claimed that Rajeev Agarwal had submitted a story titled '16, Mohandas Lane' in the Cinestaan India`s Storyteller Script Contest, where Chaturvedi was a jury member.

Refuting the news completely, Chaturvedi has said the film's story was her original idea. "My conscience is clear, and so are the facts in this matter. `Gulabo Sitabo` is my original work and I am proud of it. I shared the idea with the director (Shoojit Sircar) and lead actor (Amitabh Bachchan) of the film in early 2017. I subsequently registered the concept note for the film in May 2018," Chaturvedi said.

Quashing claims made by Agarwal, Chaturvedi said, "I also must clarify the speculations around my conduct as a jury member for Cinestaan`s contest. I had no access to the so-called infringed script at any point in time, as alleged. This fact has been independently confirmed by Cinestaan as well. Even the Screenwriters Association (SWA), who has looked at this dispute in May 2020, decided in my favour. I speak now to request the press and public not to be disillusioned by false accusations, which are for publicity only. Acts of harassment, defamatory comments, and leaking confidential notices by the accusers only show their lack of faith in their own case. I stand by my truth," she said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a legal notice was sent by advocate Rizwan Siddiquee on behalf of Akira Agarwal to the makers of 'Gulabo Sitabo', with the demand to see the film`s complete script.

Akira Agarwal has also filed a complaint at Mumbai`s Juhu Police Station in this regard. Alleging that the story of 'Gulabo Sitabo', its background and theme resemble '16, Mohandas Lane'.

According to the legal notice, Agarwal had submitted his story in the month March 2018 and his entry had subsequently been shortlisted. On June 28, 2018, the final script of the story was also submitted for the contest and all jury members had full access to the same.

Speaking to a news agency, Anjum Rajabali, Jury Chairman, Cinestaan Script Contest, said, "While it is true that `16, Mohandas Lane` was submitted to the first edition of the Cinestaan India`s Storytellers Script Contest of which Juhi Chaturvedi was one of the jury members, we want to clarify that she had absolutely no access to this particular script."

"The process of reading, assessing, screening and judging involved three clear stages. In the first stage, all the submitted stories were read by a bunch of readers and around 325 were shortlisted for me to read. From these, we invited 152 writers to develop their stories into screenplays and submit them to the contest. 126 screenplays were received. In the second stage, these were read by our readers and 20 shortlisted scripts were sent to me, which were read by two senior readers and myself. From these, we shortlisted eight scripts. And, in the third stage, these eight scripts were sent to the other three jury members, Aamir Khan, Raju Hirani and Juhi Chaturvedi, to be read by them and by me again.

"From among these, five were selected for the awards, and ranked in order of merit. While `16, Mohandas Lane` made it to the top 20, it did not enter the final list of 8 scripts which were sent to the jury. The jury, including Juhi, had absolutely no access to any script except for the 8 which were sent to them. So, it is totally incorrect to assume that since Juhi Chaturvedi was on the contest`s jury she had received the said script. There is clear documentation, including a trail of e-mails from myself to each jury member, which bears out the above facts unambiguously," Rajabali further shared.
Sircar`s comedy 'Gulabo Sitabo' featuress Amitabh Bachchan as Mirza, landlord of an old dilapidated `haveli` in the heart of Lucknow, named Fatima Mahal, while Ayushmann Khurrana plays is his shrewd tenant, Baankey.

The film is produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, and is set to premiere worldwide on June 12 on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.

A day after INOX multiplex issued a statement expressing disappointment over Bollywood opting for the digital premiere of films, the Producers Guild of India has hit back at sections of the exhibition sector. In a statement released on Twitter, the guild has listed down reasons for producers wanting to release directly to digital platforms amid lockdown.
In the statement that was issued on Friday, the guild wrote that we are in unprecedented times, facing one of the "greatest public health and economic emergencies of our lifetimes".

"This is a time for the entire film industry to come together with empathy and support for the difficult predicament that each of our constituents finds themselves in - from producers, distributors, exhibitors, daily wage earners and technicians, to the thousands of people whose lives and livelihoods are in some way dependent on our industry.

"Hence at a time like this, it is disappointing to see abrasive and unconstructive messaging from some of our colleagues in the exhibition sector. Statements that call for `retributive measures` against producers who decide to take their movies direct to OTT platforms - especially at a time when cinemas are unfortunately closed for the foreseeable future - do not lend themselves to a constructive or collaborative dialogue on the way forward for the industry."

How OTT and cinema halls can co-exist in post COVID world

The Guild`s statement suggested the production sector (just like the exhibition sector) is suffering "hundreds of crores of losses on a daily basis - - Elaborate and expensive sets erected for under-production films have had to be taken down due to no date in sight for shoots to resume, with the sunk cost of the set and studio rentals to be borne completely by producers - as insurers refuse to cover the cost".

The statement added that "even when cinemas reopen across India, there is "no guarantee that the overseas theatrical market (which is a key component of the economics of Hindi films) will have resumed. Even if it has in some countries, it might not have in others, hence leading to additional loss of revenue for a producer. When cinemas reopen, we should be prepared for lower occupancies. One, because of the social distancing norms that will be both mandated and necessary for public safety. Secondly, because of the inevitable concern that cinema public spaces - goers will have about venturing back into."

The guild also pointed out that there will be a huge backlog of releases, and the smaller and medium scale films especially will suffer from suboptimal showcasing in addition to above.

The Producers Guild also emphasised that they are unequivocally and passionately supportive of the theatrical release of films, and a theatrical release will always be the preference for movies that were conceptualised as cinematic experiences.

"But these are unprecedented times for all the reasons mentioned above, and it is imperative to see things in that context. For producers to continue to keep `producing` the movies that light up our cinema screens, they need to continue to be in business in the first place. The production fraternity would like to work collaboratively with the exhibition sector to ensure that once cinemas do reopen across the country, we do all we can to bring audiences back in large numbers to experience our movies in the way they were always meant to be enjoyed - at the theatres."

Five other major films in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada languages have also been lined up straight for release on Amazon Prime as of now.

Now producer's guild backs digital releases, disappointed with 'unconstructive messaging' by exhibition sector

Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar's next 'Gulbao Sitabo' featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan was scheduled to release in theatres on April 12 but owing to the nationwide lockdown, the film will now get a direct digital release.

Ayushmann took to Instagram to announce that the film will now be releasing on Amazon Prime on June 12.

Sircar’s quirky dramedy is the tale of two slimy scheming foxes in a game of one upmanship, each one attracting other members to their clan and each one with an agenda of his own.

In this season of coronavirus pandemic, Netflix show 'Money Heist' has gained immense popularity. Fans across the world are now making a fantasy list of actors who could play the various characters of the show- if the show was to be ever remade in their country.

In India too, numerous names have popped up when one thought of an Indian remake. Now, the director of the show- Alex Riodrigo has himself named Indian actors who he would consider if ever he had to remake the show for the Indian audience.

Speaking to an online portal, the director said he was cast Tamil superstar Vijay or Ayushmann Khurrana in the Professor's role. He picks Ajith Kumar for the role of Bagota and Shah Rukh Khan as Berlin.

Interestingly, a few weeks earlier Ayushmann had expressed his love for 'Money Heist' and had publicly asked filmmakers to write a character like the Professor for him.

Alex picked Ranveer Singh and Mahesh Babu as Denver and Tamayo respectively and Suriya as Suarez.

The cast suggested by Alex seems quite varied and interesting. The director stated that he picked the actors according to the perception he has about them. He felt Vijay looked 'intelligent' like Professor and SRK looked handsome just like Berlin.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan: Ayushmann Khurrana's same-sex love story banned in Dubai, UAE

The best thing about this week's release 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' featuring Ayushmaan Khurrana is that writer-director Hitesh Kewalya completely avoids all kinds of stereotypes while narrating a same-sex love story. Bollywood, for decades, has been guilty of stereotyping gay characters, making them look caricaturish and effeminate. Why does a man have to be effeminate to be gay? To an extent, Bollywood's depiction has also hampered the way society perceives the gay community.

In 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan', the only quirk that Kartik (Khurrana) has is that he is filmy and overdramatic. Sporting a nose ring suits his flamboyant character, he is the more vocal about love than his live-in partner Aman (Jitendra Kumar). The two land in Allahabad at Aman's sprawling residence during a wedding. Kartik wants Aman to come out to his parents (Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta) and the latter is reluctant because he knows they will not take the news well.

In Pics: From 'Fire' to 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan': Tracing the journey of LGBTQ films in India

When he finally comes out to them- he explains his emotions for Kartik with chemical terms-dopamine, oxytocin, and hypothalamus just so that his scientist father understands what exactly he feels about his boyfriend. And while the examples are apt- the conventional parents are still not convinced and opt to ridiculous tropes to 'cure' Aman and his 'illness'. They perform pujas, fix his wedding to the neighbour's daughter (TV actress Pankhuri Awasthy in a delightful debut performance) and try out all sorts of tricks to get their son back.

The brilliance of Kewalya script is that the jokes not on the homosexual couple but on the scandalized, homophobic society at large which just can't fathom a boy falling in love with another boy. It also helps that he uses ample examples from famous Bollywood love stories- especially DDLJ- to depict a gay love story - to normalize it for the audience.

Bollywood, in fact, plays an integral part in the film- lots of references to Amitabh Bachchan and his films, it also parodies the viral dialogue from 'Race 3' to its convenience and delivers laughs in plenty.

While the first half has some brilliant lines and moments, the second half is tad scattered when the story suddenly shifts focus from the two lovers to the warring family and their stories. There are side stories about the parents' sex life, about the elder cousin not able to find a groom and hence being frustrated, and the father's bullying attitude for his young brother, Chaman Chacha (Manu Rishi ) which take up the narrative space. Individually these tracks are great - but in the film - after a point of time they make the screenplay look scattered and stretch the narrative unnecessary.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan: Ayushmann Khurrana's same-sex love story banned in Dubai, UAE

Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao as the dishevelled parents are great. The pair, who marvelled us in 'Badhai Ho', play strikingly different characters from that film. Rao is the villainous, disapproving father who cannot come to terms with his son's sexuality and while he gets several funny moments of his own- his character has its limitations due to the conventional portrayal of the father. Neena Gupta, though, is splendid as the honest, straight-talking mother. So are Aman's uncle and aunt played by Manu Rishi and Sunita Rajwar as the four actors bring authenticity to their characters.

The film, of course, rests on Ayushmann Khurrana's able shoulders. Another film that goes in the list of the actors socially relevant films- 'Shubh Mangal..' has Khurrana playing an over the top character who uses Bollywood references to drive home a point. He is dramatic AF, loves his guts but loves Aman more so can go all out to fight the disapproving father. Ably supporting him is Jitendra who, has created a niche for himself on the web in the past year, and delivers a restraint performance in this film. He is the calmness to Khurrana's character and the two men together effortlessly turn into lovers who are ready to fight it out with the world and more importantly with the family.

There have been certain films in Bollywood that have lead characters as gay. 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' takes the homophobic society head-on- but not once does it become preachy. With humour, familial love and equal portion hate- the film tries to normalise same-sex love story.

It's a great time for cinema in India. In the 1990s, a film on a lesbian couple (Deepa Mehta's 'Fire') had led to much uproar with political parties objecting to two women getting intimate on-screen. From then to now- where India's most bankable star shares a passionate kiss with a man on screen- India seems to have grown up.
