<p>Ayushmann Khurrana breaks out of his sub-genre in Anirudh Iyer's 'An Action Hero.' A film that centers around a film actor who plays action-oriented characters in films, the film is starkly different from the film one usually associates Ayushmann with. But while the actor is out of his comfort zone, he doesn't seem out of place playing the quintessential Bollywood hero in the film.</p>

<p>Ayushman plays superstar Manav who is known in the country for his action-hero avatar on the big screen. He goes to a remote village in Harayana to shoot. He is a self-absorbed star, who is not keen on the frills that are attached to stardom and take his action-hero avatar very seriously. And so he refuses to play a gangster on screen because he doesn't want to set the wrong example as a youth icon, he also is not ready to entertain the hanger-ons on set- namely Vicky Solanki who has been waiting for hours at the set to get a photo clicked with him.</p>

<p>Solanki is the brother of local municipal councilor Bhoora, and is planning to contest the election this season and so a selfie with a Bollywood star will just be the right boost to his campaign.</p>

<p>Vicky follows Manav out of the set when the latter doesn't oblige him with a meeting. An altercation on an empty stretch just outside the village leads to Vicky's death. Manav panics and leaves for the UK hoping to fight the legal battle from there as a UK citizen. But Bhoora, a small time goon and influential politician of his area takes it upon his ego and follows him to Uk to avenge his brother's death.</p>

<p>A cat-and-mouse chase ensues and the two meet more characters on the way as Manav tries to dodge Bhoora.</p>

<p>The film's slightly chaotic in its pace, but that's what keeps you hooked till the end. With snarky one-liners and a dark comedic underline theme, it's difficult to put 'An Action Hero' within any set genre. Action thriller - dark comedy, perhaps. But Iyer, who also has written the story, creates a stunning ambiance where the chase and the quirk seem endless. You start enjoying the clash between Bhoora and Manav almost making it a deeply engaging narrative</p>

<p>Ayushmann Khurrana who has mostly played the common man in social films and created a genre out of it gets to experiment with a completely new avatar in this film. One doesn't associate the actor with such a larger-than-life character and so it takes time to take him in as an action hero. But Khurrana thanks to his talent gets you immersed in his world. He plays a man with an ego and starry tantrums well. Giving him company on screen in a completely different character is Jaideep Ahlawat. Playing a man from the hinterland comes easy to the actor and he is demeanour language and attitude is typical of a local Harayana leader who knows how to flex muscles more than using the brain. The two characters - Bhoora and Manav are similar in some ways. Both alpha male and both egoistic to the core and the actors complement each other on screen.</p>

<p>The film's writing is superb. Not only does Iyer and screenplay writer Neeraj Yadav understand the pulse and the ways of how a remote district in Haryana functions but they also use humour in the right way. There is a delightful cameo by Akshay Kumar, there are jabs at prime-time TV anchors who also play narrators on the screen( special mention to the guy who plays Arnab Goswami on screen) and there are snide references to Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallaya- as all fugitives end up taking asylum in the UK. Watch out also for the scene where Haryana police interact with the local media over the murder. Caricaturish and so well performed.&nbsp;&nbsp;The background score by Sunny MR is also praiseworthy and&nbsp;in tune with fast-paced narrative- edgy and spunky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I did find the film long. the chase sequences feel unending after a point and I wish the film was slightly shorter. But despite its 132 minutes runtime, Iyer delivers a thoroughly engaging and entertaining film where both its leading men -Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat shine.</p>

'An Action Hero' movie review: Ayushmann Khurrana, Jaideep Ahlawat's film is a fun ride 

<p>Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who will be next seen in 'An Action Hero', took a car ride to superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Mumbai apartment Mannat on Sunday and posed for a few pictures. Taking to social media, he shared the snaps and called himself a big SRK fan.</p>

<p>In the picture, the ‘Dream Girl’ actor can be seen looking at SRK’s bungalow while being surrounded by&nbsp;fans. Many people were capturing the moment on their smartphones and shouting in excitement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before visiting SRK's Mannat, Ayushmann attended Adani Ahmedabad Marathon’s 6th Edition on Sunday morning. Nearly 1,700 runners from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force participated in the marathon along with the other 12,000 runners, to promote&nbsp;the original #Run4OurSoldiers programme.</p>

<p>Sharing a photo from the marathon, the actor wrote, "Main toh bas reel ka (I am just a reel hero) #AnActionHero hoon (I am an action hero). <p>Ayushmann Khurrana's films can be a genre in itself. The actor, has in the last five years carved a niche in Bollywood by featuring in films that mainly deal with societal taboos. In most of these films, Khurrana plays the ignorant male, who over a course of the film, realizes what's right and finally stands up to face the issue, often becoming a propagator of what's right. Most of these films have a sexual innuendo of sorts attached. Khurrana has by now mastered the art of playing the everyday common man- full of flaws yet a do-gooder. His latest 'Doctor G' directed by Anubhuti Kashyap is on similar lines.&nbsp;<br />

Based in Bhopal, the film this time tackles a man in not-so-familiar terrorism of medical sciences. Khurrana plays Uday, an MBBS student who wants to specialise in orthopedics in his master and but ends up agreeing to be a part of gynecology as it helps in to stay in Bhopal, close to his mom (Sheeba Chaddha). &nbsp;He skips the initial 10 days of class. Still, he reluctantly goes on the eleventh day to class on the behest of his cousin Ashok (Indraneil Sengupta) a reputed orthopedic&nbsp;himself and Uday's inspiration.&nbsp;<br />

He joins Dr Nandini's class ( Shefali Shah) who is a stern, strict teacher and is not happy with Uday's ways of approaching medical sciences. The beauty of 'Doctor G' is the women. From Sheeba Chaddha who is marvelous as the woke mother of Khurrana, to Shefali Shah as the bright, righteous Dr Nandini to even Rakul Preet Singh, who plays the self-aware Dr Fatima with utmost confidence. The film has great actors playing great female characters.&nbsp;<br />

Khurrana meanwhile fits like a glove in his character of the confused, misogynist Uday who has to unlearn a lot to be more adjusting and sensitive to the people around. He has played this character in other films and so Khurarana gets the tone of the character well in this too.&nbsp;<br />

Most of the humour is situational and conversational and involves Khurrana and Sheeba Chaddha's characters and the two actors deliver marvelously to the lines.&nbsp;<br />
The film is very woke. It knows that the taste and the mindset of the audience have changed and hence never shies away from talking about the wants and needs of women- middle-aged as well as young women. It is also heartening to see a mainstream Bollywood film to say the word 'vagina' as normally as it should be spoken without using other terms and hinting at it. After all the film is about a bunch of gynecologists and so talking about female organs is just normal. Some of the scenes are special. The moment where Sheeba Chaddha very categorically mentions how she too wants a man in her life, age notwithstanding stands out.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
While the film tries to break a few myths on gender in a very effective way, 'Doctor G' doesn't leave a very defining impact. Maybe because there are several male gynecologists practicing, in reality, to take this story too seriously or maybe because we have seen Khurrana in far too many similar message-driven films already. While watching the film, there is a sense of deja vu- like you know how the film will pan out or how Khurrana's character will react.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
I would still prescribe 'Doctor G' to you all (see what I did there?) If you like Ayushmann Khurrana's brand of films, add this one to that list.</p>

<p>“Peace is a subjective hypothesis,” a character tells another in director Anubhav Sinha’s latest venture ‘Anek’ and no other dialogue could have captured the essence of the film better. The earlier collaboration of Sinha and lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana – 'Article 15' – earned a lot of praise for its portrayal of caste politics in rural Uttar Pradesh. ‘Anek’, which is set-in Northeast India, tries to ask the question “What it means to be Indian” in the backdrop of government propaganda and militancy aimed at secession. The film explores what peace can mean for different kinds of people in various positions and it is that complete storytelling along with yet another earnest performance from Ayushmann that makes the film work.&nbsp;<br />

Ayushmann plays an undercover cop called Aman with a mission to keep the separatist groups in control. With the Indian government negotiating a peace accord with the local leader (played by Loitongbam Dorendra), a new group known as ‘Johnson’ are looking to disrupt the process. &nbsp;</p>

<p>However, there is more to the situation that&nbsp;meets the eye as Aman is forced to choose between his emotions and his duties. On the other hand, we follow Aido, a national-level boxer played by debutant Andrea Kevichüsa, on her fight against discrimination and her influence on Aman’s life. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Written by Anubhav Sinha, ‘Anek’ is a story of common people in Northeast India shown through the eyes of his protagonist Aman. Like 'Article 15', the hero is a newcomer to the region and through his experiences, we learn more about the problems and lives of the local population. This allows the film to give equal space to multiple plot points allowing the audience to totally immerse into the story.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is Ayushmann Khurrana in his element. The actor has made it a habit to tackle social issues with his own trademark charm but with ‘Anek’, he ventures into murkier waters. The role of Aman allows him to show a darker and grittier side to his acting – something that adds to the tone of the film. He fulfils what the role demands of him with ease and even takes part in a full-blown action sequence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like 'Article 15', ‘Anek’ once again allows Ayushmann to deliver a stirring monologue. This time, it is about how a person can get over the various divisions that does not allow one to become just ‘an Indian’. The sequence, which also features JD Chakravarthy of Satya fame, allows Ayushmann to revisit his ‘Article 15’ charm and it is one of the conversations that will remain with the audience. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Andrea Kevichüsa is equally impressive in her role, as the actress from Nagaland brings a dose of honesty to her performance. From the shock of facing discrimination at the hands of police officials to dealing with the tragedy in her village, the actress pulls off her role perfectly. Her boxing skills may not impress a lot of people but it is a small blot on one of the best debuts in recent times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The supporting cast, which boasts of powerful performers like Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa and Sushil Pandey, played their roles to perfection with special mention to Mipham Otsal who played Aido’s father with the exact passion and gravitas that the role demanded. JD&nbsp;Chakravarthy appears in a short role but is gifted with one of the most well-crafted conversations in the entire film.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film urges us to find unity in our diversity and understand how situations form every human being’s identity. <p>Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Anek’ will release a bit later than scheduled. The film will now make it to theatres on May 13 instead of March 31.&nbsp;</p>

In a freewheeling interview with Subhash &nbsp;K Jha, Abhishek sheds light on the genesis of his unusual transgender romance and its implicit ramifications.</p>

<p><strong>How and when did the idea of 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui'(CKA) come to you?</strong></p>

<p>The germ of the story emerged from a chance meeting with this lady Simran Sahni. She's a mother to two beautiful twin daughters, both of whom have undergone gender reassignment surgeries. The brief chat I had with her about the subject somehow stayed with me and I kept going back to it now and then. Post 'Kedarnath', that process of incubation seemed to have culminated into the conception of a love story and along with my writers Supratik and Tushar, we began deep-diving into this world.</p>

<p><strong>It is an audacious unconventional subject on gender reassignment. Didn’t you fear going into a territory never gone into before mainstream Hindi cinema?</strong></p>

<p>It's always exciting to push your boundaries as a filmmaker and outdo yourself each time. One shouldn't let the reductive shackles of what we regard as 'mainstream cinema' constrain or dilute one's creative voice. I want to go all out with every film I make and make the most of that opportunity.</p>

<p><strong>CKA marks a bold departure not only for Hindi cinema but also for you..your last film was about a pilgrimage spot...this is quite a distance from that one. Was it difficult covering that distance?</strong></p>

<p>In all my films I've refrained from adapting myself to a certain mould and developing a comfort zone for myself. Looking back at the modest work I've done so far, I'm glad I could explore the vividly rich Indian diaspora and delve into such distinct worlds and characters. So transitioning from one film to the next is something that's always been in my DNA as a filmmaker.</p>

<p>Both Ayushmann and Vaani are actors who are thoroughly dedicated to their craft. It was fascinating to see them explore the finer nuances of the characters and express that which is concealed between the lines. Vaani is like an enigma waiting to be explored and she certainly saw an opportunity with this story to tap into her boundless potential as an actor. Kudos to her for embracing such a challenging part with such poise.</p>

<p><strong>Everything is just right in CKA. Were you aware that the chemical balance of the storytelling was going to be so right?</strong></p>

<p>Thanks a lot for saying that. We had spent over two years working on this script. We took several routes with the story and tried to set the premise in different backdrops before we landed up with the present one. But over this course of experimentation, we grew increasingly convinced about the desired treatment and appeal that this story demands. Perhaps, it was this insight that helped us pepper the screenplay with measured elements of romance, humour, drama, and the central theme. Like every other story, this too involved a long process of trial-and-error until it felt just right.</p>

<p><strong>The response of the &nbsp;LGBTQ community to your film is crucial. What are your thoughts on this?</strong></p>

<p>Most certainly. More than anything else, it's a story that's bound to resonate with the unheard, discriminated voices who are a victim of the biases ingrained in our society. Besides being a love story, it's a film that attempts to destigmatize a regressive taboo and acceptance from the communities would be truly validating.</p>

<p><strong>Tell me about your next project?</strong></p>

<p>I've been developing a couple of projects simultaneously but am still in the process of figuring the one that goes on the floor the next. Besides directing, as a production house we are also focussing on developing content for the OTT platforms and getting other directors on board who share the same passion for clutter-breaking storytelling.</p>

<p><strong>You took a leap of faith in making this wonderful film. Any fear of falling, failing? Do you feel Hindi mainstream cinema needs to take such a leap more often?</strong></p>

<p>I think the conviction and firm belief I had about this story superseded any doubts and hesitations. Trans characters have always been reduced to become the butt of all jokes in films and it was high time that we saw them in a new light. Nothing will make me happier than encouraging conversations about the subject through the film. People love watching good stories and as filmmakers, it's on us to leave them with something they can take home with them.</p>

Abhishek Kapoor on 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui': High time we saw trans community in new light

<p>Over the years, Ayushmann Khurrana has consistently taken up projects that are message-driven and entertaining. Khurrana, with his films, has in a short span become one of the few actors whose films do well at the box office without adhering to any formula. So when Khurrana announces a new film, expectations are bound to be high. His latest 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' directed by ace filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor manages to meet expectations to a great extent.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><strong>*this review may contain spoilers</strong></em><br />

He is a brawny, alpha man with bulging biceps. She is&nbsp;pretty with a figure to die for. They both work in a gym.&nbsp;Physical attraction is obvious. So when Manu Munjal(Khurrana)&nbsp;- a Chandigarh boy who pumps iron for a living falls for the pretty, attractive Maanvi Brar(Vaani Kapoor)- sparks fly and leads to a lot of sex. His overbearing parents urge him to get married to her as she is the sophisticated 'Sector 4' type (a posh area in Chandigarh) and he is almost convinced that she is the one until a deep dark secret of Maanvi's comes tumbling out and things turn haywire.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Kapoor's film uses ample humour and a certain amount of stereotypes to deal with the core plot which revolves around a transwoman and cis man. So words like '<em>Chhakka</em>' (Hindi for eunuchs), <em>mardo wali shakal</em> (a woman with a face like a man), <em>paagalon ka doctor(</em> for psychiatrist) is used by the characters amply throughout the film. They may make you cringe but it is to drive home the point of how society remains oblivious and insensitive to issues like gender fluidity or mental health.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Manu's reactions initially are insensitive and disgusting when he finds out about Maanvi's past but also very relatable. So is Maanvi's initial hesitation to go on a date with Manu. The beauty of 'Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui' lies in its writing by Kapoor, Tushar Paranjape&nbsp;and Supratik Sen who also doubles up as the screenplay writer. The humour is the little detailings, the poignancy of a matter as sensitive as gender fluidity is in how the characters and their backgrounds unravelled. In hero is of course an alpha male but in reality, a softie who is bullied by his two sisters at home. The stronger one is the woman or trans girl as we soon get to know, who despite appearing shy and vulnerable in the beginning turns out to be a person with more grit and personality.&nbsp;</p>

Kapoor's casting is perfect. Khurrana- who is from Chandigarh- plays the brawny, slightly dumb, slightly naive Manu with ease. With bulging biceps and a ponytail high up, Manu is your typical <em>desi munda</em> who wants everyone to believe he is a toughie - just to hide his inner vulnerabilities, his ignorance about worldly affairs. He knows that he needs to ask her out on a date, but doesn't wait for her to order and promptly starts eating before she can even pick her food because he is on intermittent fasting. He is that insensitive and takes him a while to come around and understand what he is got himself into.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Vaani Kapoor plays the underdog in an Ayushmann Khurrana film where it's always easy to get overshadowed by the actor's talent. But Kapoor is astoundingly fresh and shows spark in her portrayal of the well-turned town, hot (if I may add) Maanvi. She is strong, she is gone through a lot of pain but is still ready to take on the world head on. She matches Ayushmann in every scene - making it evident that when she is given a well-etched out role, she knows how to deliver. Her portrayal of Maanvi almost reminds you of her bright, refreshing debut in 'Shuddh Desi Romance'.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
It's tricky for a Bollywood mainstream film to talk about gender fluidity and the trans community without offending anyone and without sounding too preachy. Kapoor, with the help of his writers, envelops the topic in hand, in a rom-com with ample situational comedy, quirky characters and of course crude language. But it helps to drive home the point.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
I also particularly liked the way the maker educates the audience about transgenders and sex reassignment procedures by including actual snippets of real transgender activists&nbsp;and personalities talking about their experiences. Those portions are so well made- with Manu, who know is at crossroads with this relationship with Maanvi, making the effort to read up to understand what the issue is.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The only problem with the film is that it is predictable. You know how it will end and it takes a lot of time to concentrate on the man and his transformation as a noble, well-rounded, aware personality who remains the prime focus in the relationship, attempting to win a sports championship with his girl cheering him by the side.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Should you watch 'Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui'? Yes! It may try to blanket an important issue under a romantic-comedy genre, but it at least attempts to push the boundaries in Bollywood which is mostly tone-deaf about such topics. It takes the help of comedy and stereotypes but still manages to drive home an important point- that love is love. Irrespective of gender.&nbsp;</p>

Over the years, Ayushmann Khurrana has consistently taken up projects that are message-driven and entertaining. Khurrana, with his films, has in a short span become one of the few actors whose films do well at the box office without adhering to any formula. So when Khurrana announces a new film, expectations are bound to be high. His latest 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' directed by ace filmmaker Abhishek Kapoor manages to meet expectations to a great extent. *this review may contain spoilers He is a brawny, alpha man with bulging biceps. She is pretty with a figure to die for. They both work in a gym. Physical attraction is obvious. So when Manu Munjal(Khurrana) - a Chandigarh boy who pumps iron for a living falls for the pretty, attractive Maanvi Brar(Vaani Kapoor)- sparks fly and leads to a lot of sex. His overbearing parents urge him to get married to her as she is the sophisticated 'Sector 4' type (a posh area in Chandigarh) and he is almost convinced that she is the one until a deep dark secret of Maanvi's comes tumbling out and things turn haywire. Kapoor's film uses ample humour and a certain amount of stereotypes to deal with the core plot which revolves around a transwoman and cis man. So words like 'Chhakka' (Hindi for eunuchs), mardo wali shakal (a woman with a face like a man), paagalon ka doctor( for psychiatrist) is used by the characters amply throughout the film. They may make you cringe but it is to drive home the point of how society remains oblivious and insensitive to issues like gender fluidity or mental health. Manu's reactions initially are insensitive and disgusting when he finds out about Maanvi's past but also very relatable. So is Maanvi's initial hesitation to go on a date with Manu. The beauty of 'Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui' lies in its writing by Kapoor, Tushar Paranjape and Supratik Sen who also doubles up as the screenplay writer. The humour is the little detailings, the poignancy of a matter as sensitive as gender fluidity is in how the characters and their backgrounds unravelled. In hero is of course an alpha male but in reality, a softie who is bullied by his two sisters at home. The stronger one is the woman or trans girl as we soon get to know, who despite appearing shy and vulnerable in the beginning turns out to be a person with more grit and personality. Kapoor's casting is perfect. Khurrana- who is from Chandigarh- plays the brawny, slightly dumb, slightly naive Manu with ease. With bulging biceps and a ponytail high up, Manu is your typical desi munda who wants everyone to believe he is a toughie - just to hide his inner vulnerabilities, his ignorance about worldly affairs. He knows that he needs to ask her out on a date, but doesn't wait for her to order and promptly starts eating before she can even pick her food because he is on intermittent fasting. He is that insensitive and takes him a while to come around and understand what he is got himself into. Vaani Kapoor plays the underdog in an Ayushmann Khurrana film where it's always easy to get overshadowed by the actor's talent. But Kapoor is astoundingly fresh and shows spark in her portrayal of the well-turned town, hot (if I may add) Maanvi. She is strong, she is gone through a lot of pain but is still ready to take on the world head on. She matches Ayushmann in every scene - making it evident that when she is given a well-etched out role, she knows how to deliver. Her portrayal of Maanvi almost reminds you of her bright, refreshing debut in 'Shuddh Desi Romance'. It's tricky for a Bollywood mainstream film to talk about gender fluidity and the trans community without offending anyone and without sounding too preachy. Kapoor, with the help of his writers, envelops the topic in hand, in a rom-com with ample situational comedy, quirky characters and of course crude language. But it helps to drive home the point. I also particularly liked the way the maker educates the audience about transgenders and sex reassignment procedures by including actual snippets of real transgender activists and personalities talking about their experiences. Those portions are so well made- with Manu, who know is at crossroads with this relationship with Maanvi, making the effort to read up to understand what the issue is. The only problem with the film is that it is predictable. You know how it will end and it takes a lot of time to concentrate on the man and his transformation as a noble, well-rounded, aware personality who remains the prime focus in the relationship, attempting to win a sports championship with his girl cheering him by the side. Should you watch 'Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui'? Yes! It may try to blanket an important issue under a romantic-comedy genre, but it at least attempts to push the boundaries in Bollywood which is mostly tone-deaf about such topics. It takes the help of comedy and stereotypes but still manages to drive home an important point- that love is love. Irrespective of gender.

<p>After receiving critical acclaim for 'Article 15', actor Ayushmann Khurrana and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha have teamed up once again for a new film called 'Anek'. The film's release date was announced on social media on Monday. It will hit theatres on September 17 this year.&nbsp;<br />

We are glad that our efforts were laid down successfully," Kumar said in a statement here. "The new normal definitely has gotten the best out of us within a short span of time. We are happy to become one of the first Indian films to pull this off. It's not been easy but together we made it happen," the producer said.<br />
