Ayushmann Khurrana drops peppy song 'Gabru' from 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan'

We may have progressed as a nation, we may call ourselves a sovereign republic- but division based on caste and religion continue to plague our society. Over the years, several filmmakers have made films depicting this harsh reality of our society, so the premise of filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's new film 'Article 15' is not new. Yet, the film holds relevance in present times.

Ayan Ranjan (Ayushmann Khurrana) an IPS officer finds himself posted at a fictional town of Laalgaon, in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh. Europe bred Ayan is how most urban educated Indians are- woke activists, aware of the rights but have never experienced any kind of disparity in their lives. In the beginning, things seem the usual and Ayan is repeatedly told by his subordinates that things are fine and how he should not be meddling in a local business. When three girls from the nearby village go missing and their family members seek the police' help, Ayan's subordinate Brahmadutt (Manoj Pahwa) admonishes the case as a common occurrence. It's only when two of those missing are found hanging from a tree, does Ayan wake up to the situation and realises that everything is not how it seems.

Loosely based on the 2014 Badaun gang-rape case, co-writers Anubhav Sinha and Gaurav Solanki do not mince their words as they depict the harsh realities of caste and class discrimination that exists in just few hundred kilometers from metropolitan cities of India. It may not matter in the big cities what caste you belong to- but in the smaller towns, caste decides your occupation, your way of living and your standing in the society.

As the educated, liberal and righteous Ayan goes about doing his job, looking for the third missing girl, he is warned by his colleagues to not break the equilibrium that exists in the small town. Ayan's investigation also makes him realise that despite education, there exists a class divide in the town where the upper caste may be dependent on the lower caste for their day to day work yet the inherent prejudices make them discriminate at every step.

There are two poignant scenes in the film that stood out and perhaps define the prejudiced, casteist society we live in. Irritated by the constant reference to caste and class, an exasperated Ayan walks out of his at the thana and asks all his officers to assemble. He then goes on to ask each of them their caste- and they reply nonchalantly- even making him aware that who are part of the OBC and who isn't. It's a comical scene-where one constable even clarifies that Jats were 'normal' but are OBCs now- the point is made very effectively. Then there's the scene where the main accused is interrogated by Ayan on why he killed the girls? The accused, an upper caste landlord says 'because they had to show their status in the society,' without batting an eyelid. The girls' crime? They had asked for a raise for the work they did at the accused's house.

Sinha's film, in fact, is full of such powerful moments. A scene right before the interval has Ayan pasting a notice at the entrance of the thana that explains Article 15 of the constitution. As his subordinates gather to read, the camera continues to focus on the notice for a long time so that the audience can also read and become aware. An effective parting shot before the film cuts for an interval, I'd say.

Sinha also manages to cast a brilliant set of actors. Khurrana, who has had a stupendous last year with two hits - 'Andhadhun' and 'Badhaai Ho'- slips into his character well. Bollywood has always glorified the cop in its films making him look larger than life. But not Sinha. Khurrana's portrayal is realistic- a man who has been bred on the right books, who has studied abroad and who knows his job, yet clueless to the realities until he faces it himself. It's a restraint performance from the actor who has made a name for himself in slice-of-life comedies. It is refreshing to see Khurrana play the role with such conviction in such a grim and complex film. The narrative never lets Khurrana's stardom or charm take over the plot, which is great. Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa and Sayani Gupta are also superb in their respective roles. Mishra plays a lower caste, reluctant cop who finds a voice after years of being admonished for his caste. He brings great vulnerability to his performance and is simply brilliant.

While the film is driven by a strong storyline, it is also technically sound. The tone is grim and camera work by Ewan Mulligan and editing by Yasha Ramchandani keep you on the edge of your seat. Mulligan shoots the Indian countryside beautifully, and each frame is praiseworthy- some of the aerial shots, the way Mulligan captures dawn, the close-up frames are all so well composed. A little over 130 minutes long- the film never loses pace and keeps the viewer engrossed throughout.

While the film overall is effective and delivers a very important message- its subplots- involving a local Dalit hero(Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub in an impressive cameo) and his angst against a godman-turned-politician is a tad unnecessary. Sinha tries to touch upon how caste-based politics exists in most of the states in India and how it just takes the minorities backward instead of taking them ahead, but that itself can be made into another full-fledged story. These are just minor flaws in the overall picture because the story is compelling enough to make you analyse your own behaviour towards others.

'Article 15' doesn't mince its words. It tries to initiate a conversation that has been due for a long time. It may be fiction, but the story is all too familiar and uncomfortably close to our own lives. It forces you to think within and perhaps that's the biggest takeaway from the film.

'Article 15' review: Ayushmann Khurrana's film is compelling and relevant for today's time

Ayushmann Khurrana has had a dream run at the box office since 2017. With each of his film, Khurrana has just reiterated the fact that there is no ignoring this multi-faceted actor.

Since his debut in 2012 in Shoojit Sircar's sharp comedy 'Vicky Donor', Khurrana has mastered playing the stereotypical, brash North Indian guy to the hilt. Which is why when you watch him playing the smart alec Karamveer in Raaj Shaandilyaa’s 'Dream Girl' this week, you may get a sense of déjà vu. The premise may be different but you have seen Khurrana in similar roles.

Born with an unusual talent where he can imitate the voice of a woman, Karam(Khurrana) is celebrated in the local area. He plays Radha and Sita in local plays but his father Jagjeet Singh (Annu Kapoor) wants him to get a regular job. Karam does find job himself but at a seedy call centre which caters to lonely men (and women) in the wee hours of the night. The catch is that Karam has to pretend he is ‘Pooja’ and chat with his clients.

All hell breaks loose when all his clients want to either meet Pooja in person or marry her. While Karam wants to settle down with his fiancé Mahi (Nushrat Bharucha), the suitors want to be with Pooja. His clients include a wannabe poet-cop (Vijay Raaz), a disgruntled, men-hating journalist (Nidhi Thapa), her fiance’s brother (Abhishek Bannerjee), a brat with too much extra money to splurge(Raj Bhansali), and even his own father.

As the many suitors of Pooja go the extra mile to be with her, it creates havoc in Karam’s personal life creating the perfect environment for a situational comedy.

On paper, the film’s plot may have appeared a sure-shot winner but at the execution level, the makers have fumbled in too many occasions. The film begins on a hilarious note as Khurrana goes about being the ‘dream girl’ who everyone desires, the jokes and one-liners come in plenty. The film heavily uses Bollywood titles and popular songs to speak for the various situations in the film creating genuinely funny moments.

It’s the curse of the second half that completely mars the film’s narrative. The jokes and the situations become slightly jaded after a point and you find yourself getting impatient with the way the story is shaping up. The plot’s incoherence results in a sluggish second half and the screenplay appears repetitive.

Despite a great ensemble cast, somehow the film doesn’t add up ultimately. Vijay Raaz and Annu Kapoor are especially good but the writing perhaps lets them down. It ultimately comes down to Ayushmann Khurrana to take the story forward with his phenomenal performance. Khurrana shines in a film that one could have easily overlooked if someone else was cast in his place. He switches from being Pooja to Karam and back effortlessly, he makes the most dry, jaded lines appear funny. The camaraderie he shares with Kapoor and actor Manjot Singh who plays his childhood friend seems organic and almost natural.

The film’s leading lady, meanwhile, is the weakest link of the film. Bharucha and Khurrana’s love story seems unnecessary and forced to the entire plot. Bharucha also somehow doesn’t fit in the part of a small-town girl and looks out of place in most of the scenes much like the songs that arbitrarily appear in the film.

The writers slip in monologues on religion, sexism in Mahabharata and loneliness in the age of social media- just to reaffirm the intention of the film. And while we know that they make sense- when its shown on screen it doesn’t create that much of an impact.

Perhaps we have been spoilt by Khurrana himself in the past few years with some exceptionally good films and therefore in comparison, his latest seems to fall flat. His forte has always been situational comedies, and in ‘Dream Girl’ too, he fits in well and shines no doubt, but unlike his previous films, this one doesn’t create a lasting impression. You may laud Ayushmann Khurrana’s performance but not so much the film.

'Dream Girl' review: Ayushmann Khurrana shines but the film feels jaded

One of the greatest challenges for any filmmaker is to make his story engaging and entertaining. And when the storyline is predictable, the challenges double-up because the audience already knows how the story will be and it is a bigger struggle to keep them glued nevertheless. In Ayushmann Khurrana's latest 'Bala', director Amar Kaushik beautifully narrates a story that may be known yet there's a certain fresh appeal to it.

Based in Kanpur, its the story of Bala(Khurrana), a marketing agent of a beauty company, who is balding at a young age. A popular boy since childhood, he has received an ample amount of attention from the opposite sex all through his childhood. He can mimic popular stars and does stand up on the side. But Bala is also a man who is astutely insecure of his looks thanks to his premature balding.

When several disgusting attempts fail to bring back Bala's lost glory, he resorts to a wig. On a trip to Lucknow, he meets Pari(Yami Gautam), tik-tok superstar and the face of his company. Love happens almost instantly as they are a match made in filmy heaven. A day after the wedding, as Bala's childhood friend Latika(Bhumi Pednekar) a dusky strong-headed lawyer comes charging at Bala s place, truth is unravelled and Pari decides to walk out of the marriage. Will they get back together- forms rest of the story.

Laced with the humorous situation and hilarious dialogues written by Niren Bhatt, 'Bala' scores majorly despite a predictable storyline. You know how the story would end up but that's where the film scores. It not only cleverly tackles societal prejudices without being too preachy but also ensures that the laughs are in plenty. Premature balding, discrimination based on one's skin colour, and appearance and even the shallow arrogance of those who are blessed with 'perfect' looks- 'Bala' tackles all of them effectively.

Performances in the film are top-notch. From leading man Ayushmann Khurrana- who yet again manages to hit the ball out of the park with a stupendous performance to the leading ladies Bhumi Pednekar as the firebrand lawyer Latika and Yami Gautam as the shallow Pari who only has her looks to be proud of- every actor seamlessly fits in their part.

Khurrana, who is clearly on a winning streak with all his films hitting the bull's eye, is the perfect small-town boy who has more arrogance than talent. A lover of 90's film, he is a charmer as Bala but also someone who is hollow and cannot think deeper than appearances. His transformation from a superfluous young man to someone who finally understands to value human beings more than looks is shown beautifully and Khurrana never slips from the character making Bala almost an extension of himself. Smart, cocky and yet extremely flawed.
Pednekar gets a feisty character to play on screen and does complete justice to it. The only hitch is her makeup- she is made at least four shades darker in the film to suit her character and the makeup artist has done a shoddy job of it. It is also refreshing to watch Yami Gautam play an over-dramatic self-obsessed small-town model. Gautam brings in the right amount of emotions that are required for her character and stands out particularly in a scene where she explains to Bala exasperatedly that how important it is to look good because that's all she has.

In the supporting cast, Saurabh Shukla, Abhishek Bannerjee, Javed Jaffery and Dheerendra Kumar Gautam (who plays Bala's younger brother) stand out. Yesteryear's TV star Deepika Amin also makes an appearance after a long time.

The film scores primarily because of good writing. Niren Bhatt creates a perfect ambience of a small town that may have reached out to the world through social media but is still years behind with its mindset.

I enjoyed 'Bala' most for its tribute to Hindi cinema. Yami and Ayushmann's love story is mostly depicted through some hilarious tik-tok videos featuring some old classic of the 1990s. Then there are multiple references of Bachchan and SRK as Bala's clearly a fan of the two superstars. One scene in the second half particularly stands out as Bala and his two friends, while drinking, lament about Bala's luck but in Bachchan's quintessential style. All three actors- Khurrana, Jaffery, and Bannerjee- are pitch-perfect in the scene which has got to be the best scene that Bollywood has produced this year.

There are portions in the second half which may sound a tad bit preachy but 'Bala' ultimately triumphs because of the performances, screenplay and the overall message that as a society we need to loosen up and accept people as what they are. There are no set standards of beauty and its high time that we force everyone to look a certain type.

Go watch 'Bala', laugh along with the characters, learn and unlearn a few things.

'Bala' review: Ayushmann Khurrana's film tackles societal prejudices head-on

Is there any role Ayushmann Khurrana can't do? Perhaps not. After being a part of films that have tackled various societal issues like castism, erectile dysfunction, body shaming- the actor's new film 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' takes on a homophobic society and tries to break the taboo around same sex love stories.

The trailer of the film was released on Monday and has Khurrana romancing internet star Jeetendra Kumar in what appears to be a rib-tickling comedy. The two actors play lovers who have to convince Jeetendra's conservative parents- played by Gajraj Rao and Neena Gupta- to accept their love and subsequent marriage.

Khurrana plays the more brazen of the two who convinces his partner, Jeetendra, to fight for love. The trailer also shows the two men sharing a kiss- perhaps a first for a mainstream Hindi film hero to do that on screen.

The film also features Manurishi Chaddha, Maanvi Gagroo and TV actress Pankhuri Awasthy. The film is a sequel of Khurrana's earlier hit 'Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' which dealt with erectile dysfunction and co-starred Bhumi Pednekar.

Slated to release on February 21, the film has been directed by Hitesh Kewalya.

Yami Gautam made an impressive debut in Shoojit Sircar's 'Vicky Donor' back in 2012 but it took her a while to find her footing in the film industry. While she was part of several big-budget films in the following years, including films like 'Badlapur' and 'Kaabil', it is 2019 that the actress gained maximum success with two hots. She starred in two of the biggest blockbusters of the year- 'Uri: The Surgical Strike' at the beginning of the year and ended the year with a bang in 'Bala'.

Finally getting her moment under the sun, Yami admits that it took her a while to get due recognition but she worked very hard for it. "It took a while to get roles, films that challenge. It's not been an easy journey for me especially because I was on my own. But that's also the fun part and I enjoy it. The journey can be tough but when you know the kind of films, roles you want to do- it happens. You work hard towards it, but the wait has been worth it," said Yami in an exclusive conversation with WION.

Yami admits that while she earned a lot of praise for her performance in 'Vicky Donor', the offers that followed were not exciting. "Maybe I was typecast you know," she rues. "I was called dainty, pretty and most people imagined me doing something similar(like ' ' 'Vicky Donor').

(Yami and Ayushmann in a still from 'Bala') "When you realise that you are being considered only for certain kinds of roles- you work towards breaking that stereotype -it is important to come out of that image. I feel actresses are judged harshly vis a vis actors for their film choices. Also, people judging on the basis of just the poster and trailer is unfair. They aren’t seeing the narrative but isolating one look from the milieu it’s attached to.”

Yami Gautam: I feel actresses are judged harshly vis-a-vis actors for their film choices

Makers of 'Ujda Chaman' and 'Bala' have been emroiled in a bitter war of words as both the films are based on the saem theme. The trailers of the two films came out around the same time and Abhishek Pathak, the director of 'Ujda Chaman' had earlier even threatened to take legal action against 'Bala' as the latter preponed its release date in order to clash with the former.

'Bala's' leading man Ayushmann Khurrana recently opened up about the controversy to a news agency and said, "We were the first ones to have this idea in the Hindi cinema and moreover it was shot first, our teaser also came first."

"But apart from that, it should be all positive. We are not here to pinpoint on others, or talk behind their backs," said the actor.
Earlier Abhishek Pathak had claimed that his film 'Ujda Chaman' was an official remake of 2017 Kannada film 'Ondu Motteya Kathe' and he had acquired the official rights for a remake.

Khurrana's co-star in the film Yami Gautam called 'Bala' relatable. "If I go back to Vicky Donor, then I think we got to know that the audience is ready for a change. They want to watch films and cinema with which they can relate themselves and talk about it," said `Uri: The Surgical Strike` star.

"Bala I think has been made at the right point of time as the problem of hair loss in men problem is so much prevalent but nobody wants to speak about it. We all know it as it`s about complex and our insecurities and I think the change has come," she added.
Known for travelling long distances to fit into the shoes of his character, Ayushmann who had used prosthetics for the film recollected his theatre days when he went completely bald for a play.

"I remember I had shaved my head during the initial days of acting when I was doing theatre. I did a play called Kumara Swami where I went completely bald and not just me there were 12 other boys who underwent this transformation because the director felt that it would visually appeal to the audience," he shared jokingly.

Adding, the National Award winner said, "I can still recollect entering the house while wearing the helmet and getting badly scolded from my father. In fact, for 'Bala', I was ready to go bald but since we had to show different stages of receding hairline, I just couldn`t."

'Bala's' leading man Ayushmann Khurrana recently opened up about the controversy to a news agency and said, "We were the first ones to have this idea in the Hindi cinema and moreover it was shot first, our teaser also came first." "But apart from that, it should be all positive. In fact, for 'Bala', I was ready to go bald but since we had to show different stages of receding hairline, I just couldn`t." (With inputs from ANI)

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana has had a dream run at the box office since 2017 onwards. The actor has been belting out memorable films winning accolades and awards and delivering 100 crore films even. Now, the actor is planning to take a break from professional life to spend time with wife Tahira and their two children. "I don`t know how long the break will be. It could be two to three months, maybe more," the actor informed, adding, "All of last year and most of this year I was shooting four back-to-back films. So this past year was really tough. But now I am taking care of it, and I will strike a balance. I am taking time off from mid-November to be with my family." Prior to going on a break, Ayushmann has to wrap up pending projects. 'Bala' releases on November 22, and 'Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan' comes up next in March 2020. "I will soon have to get busy with the promotion of `Bala` even as I complete my work on `Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan`," he said. After that, Ayushmann is free from professional commitments for a while. "I haven`t signed any film after `Bala`. After November 15, I am completely free to spend time with my family. I do realise my children are growing up and my wife needs time from me. I am making a conscious attempt to take time off from work periodically." "I will be looking at scripts while I am home. Even if I lose out on work (during the vacation), it`s fine. There is an imperative need to take time off. It rejuvenates you," he sums up.
