India will be looking to get off to a flying start when they lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening game of Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Sunday (August 28). Rohit Sharma-led India will enter the tournament as the favourites having won the title a record seven times.

India won the last edition of the Asia Cup in 2018 under Rohit's captaincy and will be aiming to successfully defend their title in the UAE this year. India face some major selection headaches ahead of the marquee clash as senior batter Virat Kohli is all set to make his comeback for the team after a short break.

Kohli was rested from India's tour of West Indies and Zimbabwe following the conclusion of the England tour last month amid his batting struggles. India's vice-captain KL Rahul will also be under the spotlight having recently made his return from injury for the Men in Blue.

While Kohli and Rahul are likely to walk into the playing XI and slot into the top three, India are spoilt for choices in the middle-order with the likes of Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja competing for spots. In the bowling department as well, India will have to get their selection right in the absence of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Here is a look at India's predicted playing XI for clash against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022:

Top order - Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli's return is one of the major talking points ahead of the Pakistan clash and pressure will be on the former India captain to deliver. Kohli has struggled with his form of late but has the team management's backing to turn it around. Rohit Sharma is likely to open with KL Rahul, who failed to fire against Zimbabwe recently but will be hopeful of finding his mojo.

Middle order - Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja

After their terrible top-order collapse against Pakistan at the T20 World Cup last year, India will be wary of the threat and would like to bat deep in the much-awaited encounter. Suryakumar Yadav faces tough competition for a spot in the XI from Deepak Hooda but is likely to be prefered. Rishabh Pant is expected to pip Dinesh Karthik as the first-choice keeper-batter while Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be two all-rounders in the team.

Spinners - Yuzvendra Chahal

With Jadeja in the line-up, India can afford to head into the clash with Yuzvendra Chahal as the only specialist spinner considering the tack in Dubai has helped fast bowlers in the past. Chahal's wicket-taking abilities in the middle-order will be crucial to India's chances in the game.

Pacers - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh

With no Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel in the squad, India's pace attack looks thin on paper but Bhuvneshwar Kumar's experience will help the Men in Blue negate the duo's absence. Both Arshdeep and Avesh have impressed recently and will be hopeful of continuing their fine form against Pakistan. Hardik Pandya can be India's 4th pace-bowling option and his contribution with the ball will come in handy for the team.

India's predicted XI: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzevndra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh

Virat Kohli to return! India's predicted playing XI for Asia Cup clash against Pakistan

Virat Kohli is gearing up for his international comeback ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, which gets underway on August 27. Ahead of Rohit Sharma-led India's tournament-opener versus Pakistan, in Dubai, on Sunday (August 28), Kohli shared a heartfelt post for MS Dhoni which has now gone viral. The strong bond between Dhoni and Kohli is known to the cricketing fraternity and the 33-year-old won hearts with his post recalling his time playing under the former Indian captain.

In early 2012, Kohli was appointed the then Indian captain Dhoni's deputy ahead of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh. The right-hander came to his own following the 2011 ODI World Cup and his consistency got rewarded as he was named the vice-captain amid the presence of senior players such as Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, etc. Kohli held the post till the end of Dhoni's white-ball captaincy tenure whereas he succeeded him in Tests in 2015. Thus, the superstar cricketer shared a heartfelt post for Dhoni, recalling the time when he served as the Jharkhand-born cricketer's deputy and further stated that he will always cherish the several match-winning partnerships he shared with the former keeper-batter.

On late Thursday evening, Kohli tweeted, "Being this man’s trusted deputy was the most enjoyable and exciting period in my career. Our partnerships would always be special to me forever. 7+18."

Under Rohit, India are placed in Pool A with Pakistan and Hong Kong. The group stage will be followed by the Super 4 round before the summit clash takes place on September 11.

Reliving Virat Kohli's glittering T20I numbers ahead of his 100th match during Indo-Pak Asia Cup showdown

India and Pakistan will resume their cricketing rivalry when they lock horns in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE. The tournament kicks off on August 27 with the two Asian giants meeting each other on August 28, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Rohit Sharma-led India will look to settle scores versus the Men in Green who had defeated them by ten wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan had won their first-ever World Cup clash versus the then Virat Kohli-led Men in Blue, hence, they will be in good stead before taking on their arch-rivals. However, Rohit's India have revamped in style and won as many as 19 games out of 24 encounters following the shambolic performance versus Pakistan. Thus, it is set to be an exciting battle when India and Pakistan resume their rivalry on the 22-yard cricket strip. Ahead of the much-awaited battle, former Pakistan batting great Younis Khan explained why Rohit has an edge over Pakistan skipper Babar when it comes to leadership skills.

"We all know how crucial Rohit and Babar are when it comes to scoring big runs for their teams and the importance they carry in terms of putting up performances of significance. But, captaincy-wise, Rohit has an edge over Babar because he has had a longer period as a senior Team India member and played under good captains as well. So that experience bodes well for Rohit," Younis told Telegraph India.

Given Rohit's experience, he certainly has an edge over Babar. But, the 27-year-old Pakistani has done well as a leader so far. Under him, Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 WC and are ranked third in ICC T20I Rankings.

It was under Rohit when India won the 2018 Asia Cup, in the UAE. Back then, the tournament was played in the 50-over format. However, this time around, it will be held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Rohit & Co. will be desperate to settle scores with Pakistan and and also clinch the Asia Cup -- for the third time in a row -- before heading into the T20 WC in Australia, from October-November.

'It's just another opposition' - Rohit Sharma downplays hype around India-Pakistan face-off in Asia Cup

Pakistan were dealt a huge blow when Shaheen Afridi injured himself during the first Test versus Sri Lanka last month. The left-arm pacer suffered a knee injury and, hence, has been ruled out of the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, set to get underway on August 27 in the UAE.

However, an injured Shaheen has travelled to the UAE for the Asian championship with the Babar Azam-led squad. Recently, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesperson opened up in this regard and revealed the reason behind the 22-year-old's presence in the Pakistan squad.

"Babar wanted him to stay with the team. Management wants to closely monitor his injury rehab. He will be staying in Dubai itself with the team," PCB spokesperson confirmed to the local media in Pakistan.

The stage is set for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, set to get underway in the UAE on August 27. India and Pakistan -- two of the strongest teams in the competition -- will start as favourites and many await the Indo-Pak clash, which will take place on August 28 (Sunday) in Dubai.

Ahead of the commencement of the Asian championship, many former cricketers and experts of the game have made their predictions as to which team will walk away with the mega title. Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris feels Rohit Sharma-led India -- the defending champions and seven-time winners -- have the ability to squash everybody, including Pakistan.

Speaking on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER THE TOP’, Styris pointed out, "Well, as we know, India has a very strong T20 league as well. I think it's the ability to come together and play the style and brand of cricket that best suits your players. I thought that was the big trick that India missed at the last T20 World Cup as it took them about two games. The two losses they had before they just started to go after the opposition, impose themselves with the talent and skill that they've got. I want to see India do that in this Asia Cup. I want them to impose themselves on the other teams and l they've got the ability to do that, I think they've got the ability to squash everybody, including Pakistan, in this Asia Cup."

'India have ability to squash everybody': Former NZ all-rounder feels Rohit & Co. favourites to win Asia Cup

Virat Kohli is gearing up for his international return as India prepare for their 2022 Asia Cup opener, where they face arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday (August 28). The 33-year-old was out of action after India's tour of England and will be back in the forthcoming Asia Cup.

A lot is being said and written about Kohli's form. The right-hander hasn't had the best of run of late, with his international century-drought continuing since late 2019. Moreover, he returned from the England tour without a single half-century and had an ordinary run in IPL 2022. Rashid Khan, Afghanistan's vital cog, has now opened up on Kohli's form ahead of the Asia Cup opener, where the Afghan team will face Sri Lanka on August 27.

"The kind of shots that he plays, you don't think he's out of form at all. As per me, he is not out of form. The issue is that there are a lot of expectations from him as people expect him to score a century in every alternate match."

"Even when we look at his Test knocks, he did all the hard work and survived during tough periods and has then gotten out in 50s or 60s. If it was any other batter, everyone would have said that he was in good form. Kohli has set the bar so high that people now want him to just score hundreds," Rashid opined in an interview with Sawera Pasha on YouTube.

Rashid further asserted, "I spoke to him during the IPL and I don't think he wasn't too bothered by what people were saying. He works very hard, and we are motivated to do the same by looking at him."

"I saw him bat in the nets the night before our match against RCB, and I kept track of the time he spent in the nets. To be honest, he batted for around two and a half hours. I was astonished to see that, as we had winded up our whole practice session and he was still there," he concluded.

Rashid and Virat can face each other if India and Afghanistan clash in the Asia Cup. India, Hong Kong and Pakistan are in Pool A whereas Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are placed in Pool B. The group stage will be followed by the Super 4 round before the summit clash, on September 11.

'He is not out of form, the issue is...' - Rashid Khan shares his take on Virat Kohli's form ahead of Asia Cup

The majority of the Indian squad is already in the UAE ahead of the start of the Asia Cup 2022 which gets underway on August 28. However, India are currently without their head coach Rahul Dravid, who tested positive for COVID-19 during a routine test on Tuesday ahead of his scheduled departure to the UAE.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India 9BCCI) has reportedly kept VVS Laxman on standby to serve as the stand-in head coach of the Indian team in case Dravid fails to recover in time. Laxman who is currently the head of BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, has already been on two tours with the Indian team as their stand-in head coach in Dravid's absence.

Laxman served as India's stand-in head coach for the first time during the team's tour of Ireland in June this year and came in as a cover for Dravid once again during their recently-concluded three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. As Dravid remains in India after testing positive, Laxman has been asked to travel to the UAE with the Indian squad.

“Dravid’s symptoms are mild. So we will wait and decide later whether we need to send VVS Laxman as his replacement or not. Laxman is already in Harare and they are supposed to take a flight to Dubai today," a BCCI official told Indian Express.

"We can ask Laxman to stay back for a few days in Dubai until Dravid’s situation gets clear. We have asked Dravid to undergo another test,” he added.

Dravid's last assignment with the Indian team was their tour of the West Indies and the USA following which he returned back home. Dravid was set to leave for the UAE on Tuesday but he tested positive for the virus. The India head coach has mild symptoms but will have to return a negative test before he can join the rest of the squad for the Asia Cup.

BCCI keeps VVS Laxman on standby for Asia Cup 2022 after head coach Rahul Dravid tests positive - Report

Not a lot of days remain for the commencement of the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE. Ahead of the tournament, all eyes are on the India-Pakistan clash, which will be held on the second day, i.e. on August 28 at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

The forthcoming Indo-Pak clash will be the first-ever meeting between the two Asian giants post the 2021 T20 World Cup, where Babar Azam & Co. thrashed India by ten wickets at the same venue in Dubai. While Babar-led Men in Green will hope for a similar such script in the making this time around as well, Rohit Sharma's Team India will aim for redemption.

Team India will enter the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition as favourites. Given their red-hot form, India will be eyeing the title in the upcoming tournament which will be held in the UAE, where the last year's T20 World Cup was held.

Despite Men in Blue not succeeding in conditions on offer in the UAE during T20 WC, Rohit Sharma-led India have a strong squad this time around -- being better balanced and more aggressive with the bat -- to go the distance in the tournament. Ahead of the Asia Cup, which kicks off on August 27, former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar pointed out the 'small challenges' for skipper Rohit.

During an interaction on the Star Sports show 'Follow the Blues', former Indian cricketer Bangar revealed, "Rohit Sharma's biggest challenge in this Asia Cup I feel is some of the players who have not played regularly for the Indian team because of different-different reasons - it could be fitness or like Virat Kohli took a break, he is also making a comeback. KL Rahul had gotten injured."

Further, Bangar highlighted that defending champions India will miss Jasprit Bumrah's services in the Asian championship. "Jasprit Bumrah is also not playing this tournament. So how he manages the bowling in Jasprit Bumrah's absence because Jasprit Bumrah is an extremely important element in India's bowling. So I feel these will be the small challenges in front of Rohit Sharma," he added.

Rohit-led India are strong title contenders for the Asia Cup. However, there are some issues as senior pros such as Virat and Rahul are returning at the highest level after some time. Moreover, Bumrah's absence -- due to a back injury -- can dent India's chances. In addition, head coach Rahul Dravid has tested positive, hence, Rohit might miss operating with him if the former captain doesn't travel to the UAE.

All eyes are on Virat Kohli as the 33-year-old will return to the 22-yard cricket strip during the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition in the UAE. India open their campaign against arch rivals Pakistan in Dubai, with an aim to settle scores with the Babar Azam-led Men in Green following their ten-wicket defeat in the last face-off during the 2021 T20 World Cup.

For India to do well, they will need Kohli to return to form at the earliest. The former Indian captain has been away from action since the end of the England tour, where he failed to score even a half-century across formats.

Kohli returned with only 76 runs in the England tour, which included the one-off Test, two ODIs and T20Is each. Recently, the superstar cricketer opened up on his batting struggles in England and admitted that he wasn't batting well (where he was continuously falling to deliveries pitched on the fourth/fifth-stump line).

"What happened in England was a pattern, so something that I could work on and something that I had to kind of overcome," Kohli revealed on the Star Sports show 'Game Plan'. "Right now, as you rightly mentioned, there is nothing that you can point out saying that the problem is happening here."

"So, that for me, is actually an easier thing to process because I know that I'm batting well and at times, when I start feeling that rhythm back, then I know that I'm batting well. So, that for me is not an issue, which wasn't the case in England; I didn't feel like I was batting well at all. So, I had to work hard on one thing that could be exposed again and again which I overcame; right now this is not the case," he added.

I didn't feel like I was batting well: Virat Kohli reflects on England tour ahead of Asia Cup return

Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi's absence from the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 is a huge blow to Pakistan's chances in the tournament. However, his absence can be a huge relief to the opposition top-order batters, who would be relieved at the prospect of not having to face one of the most dangerous new-ball operators in the world at present.

Afridi can be lethal with the new white ball in hand and has been among the most prolific wicket-takers in the powerplay as far as white ball cricket is concerned. He has also been one of Pakistan's most consistent performers across formats and has proved to be a game-changer in several big matches.

However, Pakistan are set to miss his services in the Asia Cup as he has been ruled out due to an injury in his right knee. He has been advised 3-6 weeks of rest by the PCB medical team and playing him in the Asia Cup would have threatened his chances to recover fully ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 later this year.

Speaking about his absence, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris said the top order of every team should be high-fiving themselves as Afridi is a big miss for Pakistan. Lauding the Pakistan pacer, Styris said Afridi has all the attributes that one could seek in a good fast bowler.

"Every top order should be high-fiving themselves because he has every possible attribute that you could want in a fast bowler. He has height, he has the pace, he gets bounce, he has that ability to swing the ball, and he has the variation of being a left armer as well," Styris said during an interaction on Sports18.

"So, everything you would want from a fast bowler, he has it. So, I'm with you. I think that every top order in this competition, not just the Indian top order who are susceptible to the ball coming back, I think that they will be delighted that he isn't there and it gives them a greater chance of winning the tournament," he added.

22-year-old Afridi made his international debut for Pakistan in 2018 and has quickly gone on to establish his credentials as one of the best young pacers in the world at present. The southpaw had delivered a Man of the Match performance when Pakistan last met India at the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

He wreaked havoc on the Indian top-order with the new ball to send back openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul in quick succession before also bagging the prized wicket of Virat Kohli to finish with a three-wicket haul and set up Pakistan's 10-wicket win against India.

Pakistan are once again scheduled to open their Asia Cup campaign against India this year and will be hopeful of getting off to a winning start despite missing the services of their star pacer.

Also Read: 'We were bit timid at the top': Shastri explains why India's aggressive approach in T20Is is way forward Speaking about his absence, former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris said the top order of every team should be high-fiving themselves as Afridi is a big miss for Pakistan. Recently, Virat Kohli completed 1,000 days since his last international ton. Kohli's last triple-figure score came in late 2019. Back then, no one knew a word about Covid-19. Kohli was India's all-format skipper. India still remained unbeaten versus Pakistan in World Cup history. IPL remained an eight-team tournament. MS Dhoni hadn't announced international retirement.

In a nutshell, it has been very long since Kohli broke his international century drought. To date, his dismal run surprises many -- even though it has now lasted for nearly three years. While he is getting vital scores under his belt at regular intervals (although it has evaded him since the beginning of IPL 2022 as well), cricket fans remain stunned seeing someone struggle for big scores who had made it a habit of performing consistently across formats.

Such was Kohli's knack for scoring centuries that Australia's current white-ball captain Aaron Finch had made heads turn applauding King Kohli's heroics with a heartfelt tweet in 2016. He wrote, "Dear Virat Kohli, Can you please stop making batting look so easy, it's embarrassing for most other batters in the world. Thanks"

Nonetheless, the harsh reality at present is that the 33-year-old Kohli is now struggling for big scores. As he gears up for his international return -- post the England tour -- in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022, here's reliving Kohli's career-defining 183 that came in the tournament's 2012 edition versus Pakistan:

On March 18 2012, MS Dhoni-led India faced Mishab-ul-Haq's Pakistan in the Asia Cup, held in the 50-over format. Indian bowlers were in for a leather hunt on a batting track as Pakistani openers Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez's respective tons, and their 224-run opening stand, along with Younis Khan's 34-ball 52 propelled Men in Green to 329/6, after they opted to bat first. Praveen Kumar and Ashok Dinda accounted for two wickets each but R Ashwin remained economical, ending with 10-0-56-1.

In reply, India lost Gautam Gambhir -- who scored a ton in the previous game versus Sri Lanka -- for a 2-ball duck. Kohli, who also scored a century in the Lanka face-off, came at No. 3. At first, Sachin Tendulkar played the aggressor's role, using his experience to keep the scoreboard ticking. He fell for a well-compiled 48-ball 52 (his last international inning) before the Kohli show resumed. At 133-2, Kohli was joined by current Indian captain Rohit Sharma as the duo showed their class and maturity to keep India moving forward in the tall run-chase.

Rohit-Kohli found the gaps, ran well between wickets, picked their bowlers smartly to take India ahead. Kohli kept getting better with each over and raced to his career-best 183 (remains his highest ODI score to date). His innings was laced with 22 fours and two sixes, at a whopping strike rate of 123.65. Courtesy of his impressive knock, India completed the run-chase with six wickets in hand, along with 13 balls to spare. Rohit also played his part with a cautious 83-ball 68. The two were involved in an entertaining 168-run knock as Dhoni & Co. defeated Pakistan with ease.

Kohli's 183 remains the highest score by a batter in Asia Cup history. So far, he has 613 runs from 11 matches in the tournament, at a staggering average of 61.30 including three tons and a solitary half-century. Will King Kohli rediscover his form in the forthcoming Asia Cup, against one of his favourite opponents?

Asia Cup: Reminiscing Virat Kohli's career-defining 183 versus Pakistan in 2012 edition

The Indian cricket team have embraced fresh aggresisve approach with the willow in T20Is and it has been working wonders for the Men in Bue as they gear up for the T20 World Cup 2022 in two months time. 'We were bit timid at the top': Ravi Shastri explains why India's aggressive approach in T20Is is way forward

The Asia Cup 2022 edition is about to kick off on August 27 (Saturday). Undoubtedly, the hype regarding the forthcoming tournament is very high given that two Asian giants India and Pakistan are set to lock horns with each other in their respective tournament-openers on August 28, at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

The rivalry between the two senior teams will resume once again, following their last face-off in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Interestingly, the last clash between both sides also took place at the same venue, in Dubai, where Babar Azam & Co. demolished India by ten wickets to break their World Cup jinx versus their neighbouring country. Given the Asia Cup is being held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia from October-November, Rohit Sharma-led India and the Men in Green will leave no stone unturned to emerge on top in the Asian championship.

While India and Pakistan are placed in the same group (Pool A), they will meet on August 28. However, there's a catch. For the unversed, cricket fans are in for a treat as the two heavyweights are likely to meet each other as many as three times overall in the 2022 edition.

As India and Pakistan are expected to run past the other qualifying team -- who will join them in Pool A -- and enter the Super 4, they are likely to be pitted against each other on September 4 (Sunday). As Rohit-led Men in Blue and Pakistan are two of the strongest teams and, thus, they are expected to top the Super 4 and face-off in the tournament finale as well, i.e. on September 11.

Having said that, one cannot write off competitive and ever-improving teams such as Afghanistan, Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh and Dasun Shanaka's Sri Lanka. If a lot of upsets take place, the finalists can appear to be different than the ones many expect at this point.

India and Pakistan have never played in the Asia Cup final so far. Will the script change this time around? Only time will tell...

Asia Cup 2022: EXPLAINED! How India might take on Pakistan thrice in mega event

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain has replaced the injured Shaheen Shah Afridi for the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. The 22-year-old Hasnain returned to cricket in June after remodelling his bowling action. He was suspended in February after being called by umpires during the BBL.

The right-arm fast bowler has taken 17 wickets in 18 T20s and played his last T20 against the West Indies at Karachi in December 2021.

Hasnain is representing the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred competition in England and will join the Pakistan team in the UAE.

During the Hundred competition, Australia's Marcus Stoinis mimicked Hasnain's bowling action with a throwing motion when he was walking back to the dugout after being caught by the fast bowler's short-pitched delivery.

Afridi was ruled out of the Asia Cup and also from next month's seven-match T20 series against England after doctors advised him to rest for at least four to six weeks to fully recover from a knee injury.

Mohammad Hasnain replaces injured pacer Shaheen Afridi in Pakistan's squad for Asia Cup 2022

India have been handed a huge setback ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 as head coach Rahul Dravid has tested positive for COVID-19. Dravid had not travelled to Zimbabwe with the Indian squad for the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against the hosts as the head coach was rested along with bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and batting coach Vikram Rathour.

In Dravid's absence, another India legend VVS Laxman, who heads the National Cricket Academy (NCA), served as the stand-in head coach of the KL Rahul-led Team India on their tour of Zimbabwe. Dravid's last assignment with the team was their tour of the Caribbean where India defeated West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series and 4-1 in the T20Is.

Dravid's absence will be a big blow for India as the head coach has been instrumental in the team's success across formats since taking over last year. Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma have instilled a new aggressive intent in the team and have changed the way India played T20 cricket.

India is set to leave for the UAE soon for the premier tournament which will serve as the perfect preparation ahead of the Asia Cup 2022. Dravid is likely to miss the tournament due to his positive test. India will begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on August 28 (Sunday).

Rohit Sharma, who was rested from the Zimbabwe series, will return to lead the team in the Asia Cup. Rohit will be looking to inspire the Men in Blue to another memorable triumph having guided them to the title in the last edition of the Asia Cup in 2018.

India will witness the return of superstar batter Virat Kohli, who will be hopeful of bouncing back to form in the tournament. Kohli has been enduring a lean patch across formats in international cricket and will be desperate to notch up a big knock when he marks his return to the playing XI against Pakistan.

While the likes of Kohli and Rohit will be back with the squad, India will miss the services of ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel for the tournament. India head coach Rahul Dravid tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of Asia Cup 2022

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has come down heavily on Virat Kohli's critics amid his ongoing lean patch in international cricket. Underfire Kohli has been on the receiving end of intense criticism from all corners for his poor form as he has failed to score runs consistently across formats and has gone without scoring an international century for over 1,000 days now.

However, Shastri believes a player of Kohli's stature needs just one good game to turn things around. The former India head coach believes the chatter around Kohli's form will end if the senior batter manages to score a half-century in his team's opener against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022.

Kohli is currently on a break and will return to action in the Asia Cup which gets underway in the UAE on August 27 (Saturday). India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan in a much-awaited clash at the Dubai International Stadium on August 28. Ahead of his return, Shastri backed Kohli to shut his critics with the willow.

Virat Kohli's ongoing lean patch with the willow is a huge concern for the Indian team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 later this year. Kohli has been backed constantly by the Indian team management but has failed to notch up big knocks consistently. He had a disastrous campaign during India's recently-concluded tour of England and has not returned to action since.

Kohli had opted for a break following the conclusion of the England tour and went on to miss India's tour of the West Indies and Zimbabwe. The senior batter is all set to make his comeback for the Indian team in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 which gets underway in UAE on August 28.

There has been a raging debate over Kohli's woeful form with several former cricketers and experts also calling for the superstar batter to be dropped from India's T20I side ahead of the T20 World Cup this year. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has backed Kohli to bounce back soon.

Pathan explained why Asia Cup 2022 will be an important tournament for Kohli stating that the Indian batter cannot head into the World Cup looking to still find his form. Pathan believes returning to top form in Asia Cup will be a huge boost for Kohli and the Indian team looking forward to the T20 World Cup.

You can't find form in the World Cup: Irfan Pathan explains why Asia Cup will be important for Virat Kohli

Babar Azam will enter the forthcoming Asia Cup as the No. 1 batter in the ICC T20I rankings. He has been in sensational form in the ongoing calendar year and even holds the numero uno position in ODI rankings. Babar is set to be pitted against one of his greatest rivals Virat Kohli when India and Pakistan face each other in the 2022 Asia Cup edition, in the UAE.

Kohli, on the other hand, is entering the Asian championship with all eyes on him. The 33-year-old had a woeful tour of England, without a single half-century across formats, and also had an ordinary run in IPL 2022, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Kohli, with 70 international tons, last scored a century at the highest level in late 2019. Thus, he has his back against the wall.

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram recently joined the best batsmen debate while talking about Babar and Kohli. Sharing his views at a press conference, the ex-swingking stated that Babar is on track to be one of the modern greats. "The comparisons are only natural. When we played people used to compare Inzamam, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Before that it was Sunil Gavaskar Javed Miandad, G Vishwanath and Zaheer Abbas. Babar has been very consistent, because he has got the right technique. He is very hungry and very fit. He is still a young captain but is learning very fast," Akram told Star Sports.

He added, "However, comparisons with Virat it is too early. Babar is on the right track to be where Virat Kohli is but to compare him with him at this stage is too early. But he is absolutely on the right track to be one of the modern greats."

It will be interesting to see who among Kohli and Babar will have the last laugh in the forthcoming India-Pakistan showdown at the Asia Cup, which will be held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli vs Babar Azam: Wasim Akram joins 'best batsman' debate ahead of India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash

Virat Kohli's form continues to be a topic of discussion in the cricketing fraternity. The 33-year-old has been out of form for quite some time and hasn't been part of the action at the international level since India's tour of England, where he returned without a single half-century across formats. Thus, all eyes are on the former Indian skipper on how he returns to his best in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, to be held in the UAE.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, which will be held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the 2022 T20 World Cup, former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram has come out in support of under-fire Kohli. He labelled him as one of the greatest of all time and has backed him to overcome his rut in the upcoming Asian championship.

"Let me start off with from last year or so, whatever I have been seeing on social media, from Indian fans, against Virat Kohli... most of them, fans or press, or whoever they may be, having a go at him unnecessarily. He is only 33, he is one of the greatest of all time," Akram said during a press conference organised by Star Sports.

"He is extraordinary. He is averaging 50-plus in all formats, he is still fit as a fiddle, he is still one of the best fielders in the Indian squad and like they say, form is temporary, class is forever. That is Virat Kohli. I am sure he will come back and score runs. I hope he doesn't come back against Pakistan, but he will make a comeback," Akram added.

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was recently asked by a fan to come out of retirement after pacer Shaheen Shah Aridi was ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 due to an injury. Shaheen sustained a knee injury during Pakistan's first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month and has been advised 4-6 weeks rest and will not be seen in action in the premier tournament.

Shaheen's absence from Asia Cup 2022 has dealt a huge blow to Pakistan's chances in the tournament and has become a major taking point in the Pakistan cricket fraternity. Recently, during an interactive session on Twitter, a fan urged former Pakistan captain Afridi to come out of retirement to replace injured Shaheen.

Afridi, who is one of the greatest all-rounders to have played for Pakistan, came up with a hilarious response. Afridi revealed he had suggested Shaheen not to dive while fielding as he is a fast bowler but the fast bowler ditched his advice.

Shahid Afridi responds as fan asks him to come out of retirement to replace injured Shaheen in Asia Cup 2022

A lot of former and active cricketers continue to opine on Virat Kohli. Kohli remains the topic of discussion despite last playing an international game on July 17. After India's tour of England, the 33-year-old star Indian batter had been given rest for the national side's white-ball tour of West Indies and will now return in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, from August 27-September 11.

Talking about Kohli's form, the right-hander's last international century came in the pre-Covid era. He had a forgettable 2020 tour of New Zealand before the Covid-19 pandemic struck and shocked the whole world. Following that, he scored a lot of half-centuries but a century continues to evade him. Even in India's 2022 tour of England, Kohli ended without a single half-century across formats whereas he had an ordinary run in IPL 2022, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Many expect Kohli to start afresh in the forthcoming Asia Cup and regain his form before the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia, in October-November. Before the tournament, his good friend and former RCB teammate AB de Villiers lavished praise on him. "Virat [Kohli] is one of the greatest cricketers ever to play the game. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Virat remains world-class. Virat and I remain in regular contact. We are friends, and he certainly does not need me to tell him the importance of working hard during a bad patch," said De Villers in interaction with NDTV.

Speaking on Star Sports' show 'Gameplan', Pathan mentioned, "As far as the mind is concerned, what Virat Kohli will be thinking, what kind of mindset he will be coming in with and playing the matches, I think yes, Asia Cup is very, very important but when I look forward to the World Cup, where the pitches will be very, very good in Australia, which he likes, he thrives on Australian pitches, he's done really well. "So Indian team needs Virat Kohli in top form. He comes back from Asia Cup in top form, I think it's a win-win situation for Virat Kohli and the Indian team," added the former pacer.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India is gearing up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition, which will be held in the UAE from August 27-September 11. Ahead of the upcoming tournament, which will be held in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup, India was dealt with a massive blow with pacer Jasprit Bumrah being ruled out due to a back injury.

With no Bumrah, the onus will fall upon experienced campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The other pace options for India are Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Harshal Patel is also out of action due to injury. However, former batting coach Sanjay Bangar feels Bumrah won't be missed that in the death overs but his presence will be felt in the middle overs.

"Arshdeep is a good option who bowls good yorkers, has a lot of control and an excellent temperament to bowl in the death overs. So he (Bumrah) will not be missed that much in the death overs but the Indian team will definitely feel his absence in the middle overs," said Bangar on Star Sports show 'Follow the Blues'.

“Bhuvneshwar Kumar will have to take greater responsibility and that means bowling two overs at the start and then again bowling two overs in the last four overs, which is his strength. I feel the one over where the team uses Bumrah in the middle overs, there his absence will definitely be felt,” added Bangar.

Asia Cup: Former Indian batting coach explains why Jasprit Bumrah won't be missed much by Team India

Virat Kohli's return to international cricket is keenly awaited. Kohli was out of India's tour of West Indies as he was given rest and will now turn up on the 22-yard cricket strip for the first time since the England tour during the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022 edition. Thus, all eyes are on the former Indian skipper as he is expected to go past his poor run of form and return to his usual best in the upcoming showpiece event.

For the unversed, Kohli's last international century came in late 2019. Hence, he is yet to score a hundred in the post-Covid era. Many expect him to go all-out in the Asia Cup. Prior to India's tournament opener in the Asian championship, Pakistan's former captain Shahid Afridi opened up on Kohli's future. He was responding to a fan's query, who asked him to comment on 'Kohli's future'. Here's what the ex-Men in Green all-rounder said:

A look at winners of last eight editions of Asia Cup

There is no dearth of excitement and hype when it comes to a clash between India and Pakistan in cricket. The arch-rivals share one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the game and any game involving the two sides is always a blockbuster affair with millions across the globe glued to their television screens.

The clash between India and Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 is going to be no different as the two teams gear up to lock horns at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on August 28. However, the game is set to be short on firepower when it comes to the pace attacks of both teams.

While India are set to miss Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, Pakistan were handed a huge setback on Saturday (August 20) when fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Afridi's absence certainly is a big blow to Pakistan's chances and his absence will be felt when Babar Azam & Co. lock horns with India in the marquee clash.

Pathan reminded Younis of the absence of Bumrah and Harshal from the Indian squad in a cheeky tweet which was likely in response to his post on Afridi's injury. "It’s a relief of other teams that Bumrah and Harshal aren’t playing this Asia cup!," wrote Pathan.

Pakistan have been dealt with a huge blow ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 as fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Afridi sustained a right knee ligament injury while playing in the 1st Test against Sri Lanka last month and has been advised 4-6 weeks rest by the Pakistan medical team.

His absence will be a big blow to Pakistan's chances in the tournament. 'Big relief for Indian batsmen': Pakistan legend on Shaheen Shah Afridi's injury ahead of Asia Cup 2022

Pakistan have been handed a huge blow ahead of the Asia Cup 2022 as premier pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday (August 20) confirmed that Afridi will also miss the seven-match T20I series against England next month after sustaining a knee injury.

Afridi injured his right knee while playing in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle last month. He is part of Pakistan's ongoing tour of the Netherlands but has not played for the team. The PCB said Afridi has been advised "four-six weeks rest" by the medical team.

Afridi's absence is a huge blow to Pakistan's chances at the Asia Cup 2022. The Babar Azam-led side will start the tournament as favourites alongside India but with Afridi not spearheading their pace attack, the Men in Green will have to bring out their 'A' game in the competition to go the distance.

Afridi was the wrecker-in-chief for Pakistan when Babar Azam & Co. thrashed India by 10 wickets in the T20 World Cup 2021 last year. Afridi ran through India's top-order dismissing Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul cheaply in quick succession to turn the match in Pakistan's favour.

His absence will be felt when Pakistan open their Asia Cup 2022 campaign against India in Dubai on August 28. Afridi has been one of the most consistent performers for Pakistan across formats along with captain Babar Azam in the last few years and remains a vital cog in the team.

In his absence, the likes of Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani and Usman Qadir will be expected to stand up and deliver with the ball when Pakistan lock horns with India in their Asia Cup 2022 opener in Dubai. Pakistan will then take on the sixth qualifier in their second encounter on September 02.
