The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Mumbai Police to take action against actor Ranbir Kapoor after a complaint was filed over his cameo in Aryan Khan’s Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood.

The controversy origins from Episode 7 of the series, where Ranbir makes a brief appearance in a scene inside Karan Johar’s office. During the sequence, he is seen casually using a vape, which the complainant alleges violates the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019. The act bans not only the use but also the promotion of e-cigarettes in any form.

Also Read: Akshay Kumar credits THIS famous actor for his marriage with Twinkle Khanna

NHRC raises alarm over portrayal

According to ANI, the NHRC has written to both the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the Mumbai Police Commissioner, demanding an action taken report. NHRC seeks FIR against Ranbir Kapoor over cameo in Aryan Khan’s The Ba***ds of Bollywood

It's Aryan Khan's The Ba***ds of Bollywood show, and all of Bollywood is in it. Stepping out of his grand Mannat (professionally), Aryan, the son of superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, and one of the ambassadors of the word nepotism (if we say so), whose entire life has been spent in the spotlight, in both good and bad ways, has commendably put out a side of the world that the majority of the population is truly unaware of. While we don't claim that this series is the most accurate or truthful representation of the showbiz world, whatever Aryan has depicted is equally enjoyable, funny, and frustrating at times.

Just like the name suggests, the show portrays the behind-the-scenes sides of Bollywood, revealing the foul-mouthed side, their debt issues, insecurities, and common man concerns, all on a grand scale. The seven-part series is a parody of the world that most of the population is obsessed with. However, while Aryan's sarcastic commentary on his very own world is entertaining, he has also managed to gain pan-India attention. How? With SS Rajamouli's cameo. Power of being a star kid, we must say.

What is Ba***ds of Bollywood about?

The series revolves around a young actor, Aasmaan Singh (Lakshya), a newcomer, an outsider, who finds success after his debut film Revolver becomes a superhit, making him one of the most talked-about stars in the industry. Lakshya is not alone; he has his small team - best friend Parvaiz (Raghav Juyal), his loyal manager Sanya (Anya Singh), and his uncle Avtar (Manoj Pahwa), who is still struggling.

Also read: The Ba***ds Of Bollywood X review: Netizens call it Aryan Khan's SUPERB debut

Still from Ba***ds of Bollywood

Aasmaan is new to the world of glitz and is unaware of the nits and cracks of an industry that runs on contracts. Soon after his first project, he signed a huge three-film contract with producer Freddy Sodawallah (Manish Chaudhari). Shortly after, he gets another big offer from Karan Johar, who is playing himself, and casts him opposite fresh face Karishma (Sahher Bambba), the daughter of superstar Ajay Talvar (Bobby Deol). While Lakshya seems to be getting everything right, he soon finds himself stuck between two contracts. He has been an unknowing target. Why? Because Ajay apparently doesn't want his daughter to be launched with another fresh face. However, the real reason has been revealed in the last episode of the show. He soon gets stuck between the top game players of the industry. Unaware of what's really happening, how he and his team struggle with a contract war that leads him to his love story with Karishma, a high-speed car sequence and a very dramatic ending, make this a no-brainer show.

Also read: Nishaanchi movie review: Anurag Kashyap goes back to Gangs Of Wasseypur template, Monika Panwar shines

The performances, stars and all things fun

Aryan Khan, Bilal Siddiqi, and Manav Chauhan present the world of drama that is purely fun and effortless, and packed with juvenile and cheeky punches, silly antics, witty dialogues, and plenty of real-life references that keep you hooked throughout. Add to the parade of cameos, which might feel unnecessary, then again, what’s showbiz without the stars in it, including the Three Khans, right?

One of the standout moments is KJo hilariously calling himself the “movie mafia.” Another gem is a '90s-style producer, saying “No to drugs” (iykyk). And, of course, the most buzzworthy sequence is the police raid on a Bollywood party. The actor chosen for the role is clearly a sly dig at the very officer who arrested Aryan back in 2021 in the drug case.

Also read: Jolly LLB 3 review: Arshad, Akshay’s courtroom dramedy is a worthy sequel

In this show, Aryan has done a superb job when it comes to how smartly he presented the greyer shades of the industry through biting sarcasm on stardom, politics, media, and the eternal struggles of showbiz. The series comes through someone who has lived and breathed this world. That said, the accurate screenplay and the barrage of cameos do tend to overshadow the script, which stumbles at several points.

When it comes to performances, it was Raghav Juyal who gave a standout performance. He was the real fun, and most of the credit goes to him. The scene where he sings for Emraan Hashmi, who appears as an intimacy instructor, will have you in splits. His comic timing is impeccable, and his performance feels so real and effortless that it never feels that he's performing a character - it’s just Raghav being Raghav - authentic, natural, and hilarious.

The Kill duo, Raghav and Lakshya, are in a single team. The duo's chemistry is outstanding and eclectic. Still, the sheer energy, performances, and entertainment factor make you overlook its flaws. Bobby Deol, now riding high in his 2.0 career phase, adds further punch with his strong stardom presence.

The climax, however, doesn’t quite land well. What may have looked thrilling on paper ends up less surprising on screen, missing that wow factor. Among all, the final episode feels like the weakest and struggles to hold your attention.

In the last, Aryan Khan's show is all things fun, with a script that explores the human side of the stars, the thrills, chills and truly Indian drama that comes with emotions too. Watch the show for the fun.

The Ba***ds of Bollywood is streaming on Netflix

The Ba***ds of Bollywood trailer: Aryan Khan’s new web series leads with new faces, gets half of the industry in cameos

The internet has been abuzz with reactions to the preview of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, which was released amid fanfare on Wednesday in Mumbai. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan introduced his son Aryan Khan as the director of the series to the world. At the star-studded event, Aryan spoke to the press for the first time as he admitted he was nervous about launching his new show. The young filmmaker also introduced the star cast of the show before launching the preview of The Ba***ds of Bollywood. The show, full of celeb cameos, action sequences and romance, seemed like a true-blue Bollywood masala entertainer. While the teaser was loved by one and all, Aryan’s sly reference to jail time drew a lot of reactions on the internet.

Jail reference in The Ba***ds of Bollywood features Lakshya Kapoor in the lead role, with Sahher Bambba playing his romantic interest. The show also has Raghav Juyal, Mona Singh and Bobby Deol in key roles. At one point, as Laskhya’s character is put behind bars, a police officer says, “Tension nahi lene ka. Andar jaake log aur bhi famous ho jaate hain. (Don’t take tension, people become stars once they are put behind bars). Soon after, the frame shifts and the words ‘Written and directed by Aryan Khan’ appear onscreen.

Netizens react

Netizens were quick to notice how Aryan had slyly referred to his jail time. Many also pointed out that the line was true for not just Aryan but several other celebrities as well.

But one thing that all have agreed upon, is that Aryan has created gold and lauded his sly sense of humour. One user wrote on Instagram, “That was lowkey good one.. Haha Aryan doing self-depreciating joke.. Just like how SRK does with himself ..,” whereas another netizen wrote, “was not expecting such humoured self-awareness.”

Another comment read, “Might be half the Bollywood too, but kudos to Aryan for keeping this dialogue and not taking it personally.”

For those coming in late, Aryan Khan was arrested in 2021 by the NCB and charged with possession, consumption, sale/purchase of banned drugs. Their arrest came a day after the NCB raided the cruise ship and claimed to have seized banned drugs. The arrest and the case were closely followed by the media. Aryan was released on bail after nearly a month’s stay in jail.

His name was later cleared from the case as the court did not find proper evidence against him.

The case, however, brought focus on SRK’s son, who till then had maintained a low public profile.

About Ba***ds Of Bollywood

Directed by Aryan Khan and produced by Gauri Khan, the show was officially announced on February 3, 2025. The show is co-created by Bilal Siddiqi and Manav Chauhan, who also share writing credits with Aryan. The series will release on Netflix on September 18.
