The French Open has become the first grand slam to offer players a share of tournament revenue, marking a big shift in the ongoing prize money row between organisers and players. Roland Garros officials made the offer to players' representative Larry Scott during talks held at Wimbledon about two weeks ago. Indian batter Tilak Varma has defended his batting approach during India’s T20I tours of Ireland and England, saying his strike rate was influenced by match situations rather than his personal style. Tilak said his only focus is to do what the team needs, whether it is attacking from the very first ball or playing a steady innings, he believes the situation should decide his approach. The 23-year-old pointed out that India often lost four or five wickets inside the first 10 overs on both tours, making it important for him to stabilise the innings instead of taking unnecessary risks. US President Donald Trump reportedly delivered the same congratulatory message to every Spain and Argentina player during the medal ceremony after the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, according to a professional lip reader. Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on the presentation podium after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 following extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium to win their second FIFA World Cup title. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, while Argentina finished the match with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has announced a major change to its women's eligibility policy, introducing mandatory one-time genetic sex testing for all players wishing to compete on the WTA Tour. The updated policy comes into effect on Tuesday and requires athletes to undergo a genetic test using a cheek swab, saliva sample or blood sample to determine the presence of the SRY gene, a gene located on the Y chromosome that is associated with male biological development. Under the new rules, players will only need to take the test once during their lifetime. A negative result confirming the absence of the SRY gene will make a player eligible to compete on the WTA Tour. Players who test positive will be required to undergo additional medical assessment before a decision is made regarding their eligibility. The revised regulations also require players to sign a declaration acknowledging that refusing to undergo testing could result in disciplinary action. The WTA's previous eligibility policy, introduced in 2024, allowed transgender women to compete if they had maintained testosterone levels below 2.5 nmol/L for at least two continuous years. At present, there are no known transgender women competing on the WTA Tour. Explaining the changes, the WTA said, “The WTA's women's eligibility policy is designed to promote equal athletic opportunities in women's professional tennis and maintain fair competition for all players participating in WTA tournaments.” "Since first being introduced in 1975, the eligibility policy has undergone periodic review in light of developments across international sport." Also Read: Revealed! Marc Cucurella was seen carrying out a mysterious pre-match ritual just moments before Spain's FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Argentina. Following Spain's historic victory, it has now been revealed that the unusual act was part of a 16-year-old superstition first introduced during the nation's maiden World Cup triumph in 2010. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium, with substitute Ferran Torres scoring the winning goal in the 106th minute to secure the country's second FIFA World Cup title.
Cucurella's secret ritual revealed
Before kick-off, television cameras captured Cucurella walking quietly towards the touchline. The Spain defender removed a small object from his sock, buried it beneath the turf, and carefully covered it with grass before returning to his teammates. At the time, the gesture left fans puzzled. The mystery was solved after the final by former Spain left-back Joan Capdevila, who revealed that the object was a lucky coin and that he had personally encouraged Cucurella to continue the tradition. Capdevila was Spain's starting left-back when the team won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and admitted he had buried a coin before that final against the Netherlands. Sixteen years later, he asked Cucurella to repeat the same ritual before facing Argentina. Writing on X, Capdevila said, "And now I'll tell you a secret... In 2010, I buried a coin in the grass before starting the match... I've told it millions of times. "I asked @cucurella3 to do the same yesterday… “Marc, I love you so much. YOU ARE A WORLD CHAMPION!” Capdevila also shared footage showing Cucurella making sure nobody was watching before discreetly placing the coin beneath the pitch moments before kick-off. Also Read: New FIFA rankings revealed: Spain rise to no. 1, Argentina drop to second.
Another lucky charm for Spain
Whether viewed as superstition or coincidence, the ritual appeared to bring Spain luck once again. Luis de la Fuente's side dominated long spells of the final before finally breaking Argentina's resistance in extra time. Ferran Torres converted Nico Williams' pass in the 106th minute to secure a famous 1-0 victory and deliver Spain's second World Cup crown, exactly 16 years after their first triumph. Cucurella once again played a key role throughout the tournament, adding another major international trophy after helping Spain lift the UEFA European Championship two years earlier. Argentina's hopes of forcing penalties suffered a major setback when Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Pau Cubarsi. Tempers flared again after the final whistle as Leandro Paredes was also shown a red card following a confrontation involving several Spain players.

Capdevila nearly missed the final
The story became even more remarkable because Capdevila himself almost failed to attend the World Cup final. Earlier in the week, the former Spain international revealed that his Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) application to enter the United States had been denied, reportedly because of a previous exhibition match in Iran. Capdevila appealed directly to US President Donald Trump on social media. “I NEED HELP @realDonaldTrump!” "They just told me that I can't travel to the final with my kids because my ESTA has been denied. "Can anyone help me with this? You have no idea how excited I was to be there with all my 2010 teammates and this team to cheer them on. "I can't believe they're not letting me into the USA... and that I'll miss a moment like this with my kids who love soccer so much." According to ESPN, US Customs and Border Protection later informed the Associated Press that it had reviewed Capdevila's request and approved his entry into the United States. The former Villarreal defender reached New Jersey in time to witness Spain's World Cup victory from the stands. Following the celebrations, Capdevila shared another emotional message on social media. “HOW WASN'T IT WORTH IT... I DESERVED TO BE HERE WITH MY FAMILY ENJOYING THIS MOMENT, AND JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED. Thanks to everyone who pushed for this to be possible, thanks to all of you from the bottom of my heart.” For Capdevila, the lucky coin first buried beneath the grass in 2010 appeared to work once again. After Cucurella repeated the tradition before the 2026 World Cup final, Spain celebrated another unforgettable night by lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy for a second time.

⭐️⭐️ CÓMO NO IBA A MERECER LA PENA... Marc Cucurella's mysterious pre-match ritual before Spain's FIFA World Cup final has been explained after Joan Capdevila revealed the defender buried a lucky coin—a superstition dating back to Spain's 2010 World Cup triumph

Cucurella's secret ritual revealed Before kick-off, television cameras captured Cucurella walking quietly towards the touchline. Lionel Messi's remarkable 2026 FIFA World Cup journey ended in heartbreak after Argentina fell 1-0 to Spain in the final. The defeat not only denied Messi a second World Cup title but also likely marked his final appearance on football's biggest stage. Messi, who turned 39 in June, would be 43 by the time the 2030 FIFA World Cup begins, making another appearance increasingly unlikely for the Argentine legend. Heading into the final, Messi had enjoyed another outstanding tournament. He finished with 21 career FIFA World Cup goals before France's Kylian Mbappe overtook him by scoring twice in the third-place playoff to reach 22 goals. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Messi inspired Argentina's run to the final with eight goals and four assists. Only Mbappe had a better attacking return, registering 10 goals and four assists. However, Messi was unable to add to his tally in the final, managing just 15 touches in the first half and 54 throughout the match as Spain's disciplined defence kept him quiet.
Messi misses out on Golden Ball
Many believed Messi was the strongest candidate to win a record-extending third FIFA World Cup Golden Ball after claiming the award in 2014 and 2022. Throughout the tournament, Messi repeatedly delivered when Argentina needed him most. He scored crucial goals, including during Argentina's comeback against Egypt in the Round of 16, and produced decisive assists against England in the semifinal. Trailing until the 84th minute, Argentina turned the match around after Messi created goals for Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez within seven minutes. Despite those performances, the Golden Ball was awarded to Spain captain Rodri. Also Read: Spain World Cup victory parade in Madrid: Champions celebrate second FIFA World Cup title with over million fans
Why Rodri won the Golden Ball
Rodri played a pivotal role in Spain's march to a second FIFA World Cup title after returning from an eight-month injury layoff caused by knee surgery. He completed a tournament-best 753 passes with an impressive 94 percent accuracy and was involved in 1,803 plays, nearly 200 more than any other player. FIFA praised the Manchester City midfielder's impact on Spain's success. "The midfielder was a steady presence in the centre of the park for La Roja in their eight matches, helping them win their second global crown," FIFA wrote in a report. "His linking of defence with attack, timely interventions and pinpoint passing played a large role in Spain's conquest, not least in the 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium." "In the decider, the 30-year-old completed 101 of 105 passes, won 80 per cent of his duels and created two chances. Across the whole tournament, meanwhile, his intelligent work supporting his defenders was one of the factors in Spain conceding just one goal in their eight matches." Rodri's consistency, defensive awareness, passing accuracy, and leadership ultimately convinced FIFA's Technical Study Group to honour him as the tournament's best player, edging out Messi despite the Argentine captain's outstanding individual campaign.

Rodri lifts trophy upon landing as world champions Spain touch down in Madrid

FIFA has opened an investigation into the ugly post-match brawl between Argentine and Spanish players, leading to chaos on the pitch. Seconds after the referee blew the final whistle, with Spain standing tall against the defending champions, disturbing scenes broke out as several Argentine players began throwing punches and pushing the Spanish players in frustration, with heavy sanctions looming over them. Among those likely to face punishments are Argentina’s fullback Nahuel Molina, midfielder Leandro Paredes and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. Spain won their second World Cup title by beating Argentina in extra time on Sunday in New Jersey, thanks to a Ferran Torres strike in the 106th minute. While Spain played the best football for a team in a World Cup, Argentina, on the other hand, played the worst – failing to register a single shot on target throughout regulation time. Spain kept possession, had the higher ball control percentage and never allowed Argentina’s ageing squad to find a gap or a loophole for an attack. Such was Spain’s performance that even Argentina’s best player and captain, Lionel Messi, failed to leave a mark in what is assumed to be his final World Cup match. Also read| 2026 World Cup Winners: Why Spain are football’s most decorated team since 2000 Evidently, the frustration piled up for Argentine players, who turned Spain’s jubilation into an ugly spectacle by throwing punches and insults at their Spanish counterparts. While Messi stood alone soaking in this moment of despair, his teammate Molina apparently punched Spain captain Rodri. The Manchester City star stopped to confront the fullback, who, soon after, squared up to the Ballon d’Or winner and bumped him in the chest, triggering wild scenes at the MetLife Stadium. On the other hand, Paredes, who was shown a yellow card earlier during the game and seemed to have escaped another one, punched the Spanish defender Eric García in his throat before Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni rushed to the scene to separate the two. The midfielder, however, did not stop there. Seconds later, he released his frustration on Gavi by throwing the midfielder to the ground and later shoving him in the face. Paredes then grabbed another player’s bibs to make things worse. Meanwhile, Paredes was reportedly shown a red card for his wild reaction to the World Cup final loss, which could lead to a lengthy ban due to the nature of his sending off. On the other hand, Enzo Fernandez, who was sent off for two yellow cards, is now facing disciplinary action. FIFA has now launched an investigation into the unsavoury scenes and could punish Argentina’s FA for failing to keep its players in check.
