IPL 2025: BCCI issues warning to players & teams as match fixing threat lingers

Delhi Capitals pacer Mohit Sharma believes bowlers finally have something to smile about in IPL 2025. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said the return of saliva application on the ball and a new rule allowing teams to change the ball giving bowlers more control and a fairer chance to perform.

“100% it’s helping,” Mohit said when asked about using saliva again. “In 70% of matches, the ball is tailing in. That’s only because saliva is heavier than sweat. When one side of the ball is heavier, it helps in reverse swing. Sweat doesn’t give that effect.”

Use of saliva was banned in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic and it stayed for five years. Ahead of IPL 2025 though, most team captains requested that it (use of saliva) be brought back and the rule was changed consequently. For fast bowlers like Mohit, it’s been a game-changer, especially in the second half of the innings when reverse swing becomes more effective.

And that’s not all, another new rule is also giving bowlers an advantage. The team bowling second can now change the ball anytime after the 10th over, even if there’s no dew. This is especially useful when the ball gets too wet or soft, making it harder to grip and bowl accurately.

'I can go for my yorkers confidently'

Mohit shared an example from DC’s last match against the Mumbai Indians. “There was some dew, and MI changed the ball after 13 overs. Karn Sharma came in to bowl with the new ball, and it turned straightaway. He got Stubbs out in that same over.”

Mohit explained that a dry, harder ball makes a big difference, especially in the death overs. “If I’m bowling the 14th or 15th over after the change, I can go for my yorkers confidently. The ball won’t slip.”

These two rule changes, the use of saliva and ball change, may seem small, but they’re helping bowlers to get back in the contest. In a tournament usually ruled by batters, IPL 2025 is slowly turning into a season where bowlers can finally fight back.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, CWS said that it had received 'Expression of Interests' (EOIs) from Canada and Nigeria, besides two more unnamed countries, to host the 2030 edition of the Games.

After his poor performance with the bat in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL), Babar Azam has been called out by former cricketer Basit Ali, saying that Babar should take a lesson from India’s ace Virat Kohli.

Following his blistering 151-run against Nepal in 2023, Babar is yet to find his feet in the international cricket domain and it looks like he still needs to grind to get some runs. He has not been able to hit a century for Pakistan. To make matters worse, even his form drought seems to be taking its toll on his captaincy. Under his leadership, Peshawar Zalmi have suffered two crushing defeats on the trot.

Babar’s personal woes, paired with the team’s struggles, are piling on the pressure. Babur had no impact during Zalmi's recent 102-run thrashing by Islamabad United, where he was absent for the chase of a staggering 244-run target.

Basit has been very vocal on social media this week sharing his thoughts on Babar's captaincy mistakes in PSL. He says Babar should put the armband down and just play, for the better of his mental health and the sake of his career. Basit even took example of India's stat batter Virat Kohli, who stepped down from T20I duties last summer and cashed in his Royal Challengers Bengaluru captaincy in Indian Premier League.

'If you follow him, then learn something from him'

The 54-year-old urged Babar to learn from the Indian batting maestro and said on his YouTube channel, "Babar should leave captaincy and focus on his cricket. While chasing a 240-plus target, he gave away a catch to slip and got out. He is not focused. Zalmi management should remove him from captaincy and play him as a batter. He is harming himself. Babar is not doing anything; he just keeps playing."

"I will give the example of Virat Kohli. He retired from T20Is, and he is not even the captain of RCB. If you follow him, then learn something from him. You should play as a batter," he added.

Babar kicked off the PSL campaign with a two-ball duck against Quetta Gladiators. He was outfoxed by former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir, who lured him to commit to a cover drive, which went straight into the hand of Rilee Rossouw.

In their second fixture against the defending champions Islamabad, Ben Dwarshuis forced out an edge from Babar, which flew straight to Jason Holder, stationed at the first slip.

With Babar and Zalmi searching for form and winning momentum, Peshawar will square off against Multan Sultan in Rawalpindi on Saturday.

Also Read: IPL 2025 | PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta can't keep calm while celebrating thrilling win over KKR - WATCH Basit has been very vocal on social media this week sharing his thoughts on Babar's captaincy mistakes in PSL. He says Babar should put the armband down and just play, for the better of his mental health and the sake of his career. Basit even took example of India's stat batter Virat Kohli, who stepped down from T20I duties last summer and cashed in his Royal Challengers Bengaluru captaincy in Indian Premier League. 'If you follow him, then learn something from him' The 54-year-old urged Babar to learn from the Indian batting maestro and said on his YouTube channel, "Babar should leave captaincy and focus on his cricket. While chasing a 240-plus target, he gave away a catch to slip and got out. He is not focused. Zalmi management should remove him from captaincy and play him as a batter. He is harming himself. Babar is not doing anything; he just keeps playing." "I will give the example of Virat Kohli.

In a bizarre incident during the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in New Chandigarh on Tuesday (Apr 15), two bats failed the gauge bat size check sparking confusion and delays in the low-scoring thriller. With the batting advantage on the rise each season, the IPL seems to be drawing the line on oversized bats.

Earlier, such bat inspections were carried out inside the dressing room. But starting this week, umpires have begun conducting checks on the field as seen in other recent IPL games. As per IPL rules, a bat's width must not exceed 10.79 cm, blade thickness must stay under 6.7 cm, and edges not more than 4cm. Length-wise, it should be under 96.4 cm.

Low-scoring match

Earlier in the innings, Punjab Kings suffered a batting collapse after a fiery powerplay spell by Harshit Rana helped defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders bowl out Punjab Kings (PBKS) for just 111 runs in 15.3 overs at Mullanpur on Tuesday (April 15) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

After electing to bat first, PBKS was off to a fine start. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran came out all guns blazing. The duo feasted on Vaibhav Arora's pace, taking him down for 20 runs, with three fours and a six, with Prabhsimran being the aggressor. However, the combo of Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh, kickstarted PBKS's downfall, as Priyansh (22 in 12 balls) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (0) were dismissed in same over. PBKS were left reeling at 39/2 in 3.4 overs.

In the fifth over, Josh Inglis was cleaned up by Varun Chakaravarthy for just two runs. Punjab Kings were 42/3 in 4.5 overs. In the final over of the powerplay, Prabhsimran launched Harshit for two sixes, unfazed by the loss of wickets. But once again, Prabhsimran was removed by the duo of Harshit-Ramandeep for 30 in 15 balls, with two fours and three sixes. PBKS was 54/4 at the end of powerplay.

Nehal Wadhera and Glenn Maxwell tried stitching a partnership. However, Anrich Nortje got Wadhera (10) caught by Venkatesh Iyer while attempting a flick, at deep square leg. PBKS was 74/5 in 8.4 overs. Glenn Maxwell (7) continued his poor run, was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy.

Sunil Narine also picked up Suryansh Shedge (4) and Marco Jansen (1). PBKS were struggling at 86/8 in 11 overs. In the 16th over, Shashank (18 in 17 balls, with a four and six) and Xavier Bartlett (11 in 15 balls) were dismissed. PBKS were bundled out for 111 in 15.3 overs.

Harshit (3/25) was the pick of the bowlers for KKR, while Narine (2/14) and Varun (2/21) were also brilliant. Vaibhav and Nortje got a wicket each.

This win was special for multiple reasons. Firstly, it was the first time an ISL final was won at home, and Mohun Bagan became the first team to achieve a season double by securing both the ISL title and the ISL League Shield.

However, it was an emotional moment for veteran Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri, who was visibly teary at the of the match. This was Sunil Chhetri’s third defeat in an ISL final. Nobody has a way with words like India’s all-time top scorer Sunil Chhetri. The 40-year-old Bengaluru FC striker, after losing the ISL final against Mohun Bagan Super Giants, took to social media to raise the spirits of his fans. Mohun Bagan Super Giant scripted history by winning the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) title with a 2-1 win over Bengaluru FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday (April 12). Bengaluru had a topsy-turvy season but nevertheless, they managed to make it to the summit clash, which ultimately didn’t quite go their way. The incident happened on Monday (Apr 14) when Vance, trusted to run the country in case of emergencies as number 2 to Donald Trump, tried to lift the trophy.
