Xabi Alonso's side top the table on 12 points from four games, three ahead of second-placed Athletic Bilbao after they fell 1-0 against Alaves to tarnish their own perfect start.

Kylian Mbappe was at his brilliant best as Real Madrid showed grit to claim a 2-1 win at Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday, despite playing for an hour with 10 men after Dean Huijsen's red card. Mbappe and Arda Guler's first-half goals were enough for Los Blancos to maintain their 100 percent record, with Mikel Oyarzabal pulling one back for the hosts from the penalty spot. Xabi Alonso's side top the table on 12 points from four games, three ahead of second-placed Athletic Bilbao after they fell 1-0 against Alaves to tarnish their own perfect start. Atletico Madrid earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over fourth-place Villarreal, while champions Barcelona host Valencia on Sunday. Madrid defender Huijsen was dismissed for pulling down Oyarzabal as he ran through on goal with Madrid leading 1-0 through Mbappe's opener, and the Frenchman set up Guler for the second. "The red card changed the game a bit but we weren't afraid, we scored the second... we suffered as a team, but we go home with the three points," Mbappe told Real Madrid TV. "The start to the season has been very good, and mine too, but the season is nine months, 11 with a World Cup, so I have to play well for a lot more time (to come)." Madrid lined up with Dani Carvajal at right-back, leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench, while Fede Valverde was rested and Dani Ceballos came in. Mbappe broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when he sprinted on to a loose back-pass, beating two defenders for pace before producing a clinical finish for his fourth league goal this season. Madrid's task grew harder when Spanish centre-back Huijsen, signed from Bournemouth this summer, was dismissed for pulling back Oyarzabal as he ran towards goal. "For me it was a yellow card, (Militao) was close and the ball was not under control, and seeing the replay didn't change my mind," Alonso said. "I asked about it, (the referee) explained it and it didn't convince me." Despite their numerical disadvantage Guler doubled Madrid's lead before the break with a neat finish after a superb run from French superstar Mbappe, who teed him up after floating inside from the left. The hosts improved in the second half and won a penalty after a Carvajal handball, which Oyarzabal dispatched, but they could not find a way back. Alejandro Berenguer's own goal, deflecting Denis Suarez's cross into his own net, split the teams at San Mames as hosts Athletic dominated but could not avoid defeat by Alaves. Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid suffered two defeats and a draw in their opening fixtures but produced a far more impressive display to triumph at their Metropolitano stadium against Villarreal with goals from Pablo Barrios and debutant Nico Gonzalez. The Rojiblancos were forced to bring off Julian Alvarez, Robin Le Normand and David Hancko with knocks, a worry ahead of their Champions League opener at Liverpool on Wednesday. In what comes as a massive blow to the defending Asia Cup champions, a star Indian batter was hit on his hand while batting in the nets around 24 hours before the start of the marquee Pakistan match in Dubai on Sunday (Sep 14). Newly-appointed T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury scare to his hand during India’s final full-strength training session ahead of their second 2025 Asia Cup game against their arch-rivals. Gill, who returned to the T20I side and opened with Abhishek Sharma against the UAE, looked uncomfortable after the blow, leaving the team management and fans sweating over his fitness. Per a Times of India (TOI) report, the team physio rushed to check on Gill immediately after he was struck, while helping him walk off the pitch. Gill put the ice box on his injured hand and kept holding it for some time. However, despite all of that happening in the background, the two cricket boards, the BCCI and the PCB, agreed to honour international commitments.

Team India sits at the top of the Group A points table with a +10.483 NRR, and Pakistan is second with +4.650 NRR.

Clinical Arsenal Arsenal's Eberechi Eze made his first start since signing from Crystal Palace in August, while the winger's England team-mate Declan Rice was left on the bench. Arteta was criticised for using three 'defensive' midfielders in the loss at Liverpool, but Mikel Merino scored a hat-trick for Spain during the international break, and he should have put Arsenal ahead in the opening stages. Merino pounced on the loose ball when a free-kick dropped to him, but Forest keeper Matz Sels repelled his close-range effort. Odegaard tried to play on after an awkward fall, but the Norway midfielder was eventually by Ethan Nwaneri with just 18 minutes gone. Arsenal's set-piece excellence had tormented Postecoglou during his time at Tottenham, and it nearly paid off again when Jurrien Timber's glancing header flashed just wide from Noni Madueke's corner. It was no surprise when Arsenal took the lead from another dead-ball delivery in the 32nd minute, but Zubimendi's strike was far from routine. Meeting the ball on the volley, he blasted a brilliant strike from the edge of the area that took a slight deflection off Forest defender Murillo as it flashed past Sels. Gyokeres put Arsenal in complete control just 46 seconds after the interval. It was a goal that showcased Arteta's summer recruitment as Eze whipped in a low cross for Gyokeres to slot home with ease for the third goal since arriving from Sporting Lisbon. Forest almost hauled one back immediately as Wood's flick cannoned off the bar. Gyokeres nearly wrapped up the points with a drive against the post after Eze and Madueke combined to carve through the creaky Forest defence. Zubimendi administered the knockout blow in the 79th minute, rising to meet Leandro Trossard's cross with a clinical header. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick lashed out at the Spanish national team on Saturday after Lamine Yamal was ruled out of his team's La Liga clash against Valencia. The 18-year-old winger did not train with the Spanish champions because of a groin issue ahead of the game on Sunday, and is also a doubt to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Thursday. "Spain have best team in the world best players in the world. In every position, they are unbelievably good. Maybe also when we want to take care of players, young players, it's like that, doing this... I'm really sad about this." "Maybe it's all about my Spanish not (being) good, his English not good. Communication... there could be better," continued former Germany coach Flick. “I was also on this side, (coaching a) national team, and I know how hard this job can be, but the communication with the clubs was always good.” Flick confirmed Frenkie de Jong would also miss the Valencia game, but midfielder Marc Bernal is fit to return to the squad for the first time since suffering a long-term knee injury nine months ago. Barcelona will play the game at their 6,000-capacity Johan Cruyff training ground because the Spotify Camp Nou is not yet ready to be reopened. "I spoke with the players, the captains, and they said it will not affect us," said Flick. "When we play at the new Camp Nou, 105,000 (capacity), maybe it's a little bit different to playing at the Johan. “As I said before, it's not an excuse; I will not use it. Valencia also has to play in this stadium.” Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Pakistan legend and former speedster Wasim Akram has urged both India and Pakistan to enjoy the high-octane clash between the sides as the two prepare for the Asian Cup Group A contest on Sunday (Sep 14). Sunday’s meeting at the Dubai International Stadium will be the first time India and Pakistan go head-to-head in a competitive match after the recent Operation Sindoor, where both nations were in a near-war situation. However, according to Akram, both teams should enjoy the match despite the high tension surrounding the contest.
Akram urges India, Pakistan to enjoy
"Enjoy, it's a game of cricket," legendary left-armer Akram told AFP ahead of the potential first of three matches. "Forget about everything other than cricket. Germany, France, Argentina and Austria all edged closer to the Davis Cup finals on Friday taking 2-0 leads in their second-round qualifiers. The seven winners of the best-of-five matches in this weekend's qualifiers advance to November's "Final 8" hosted by defending champions Italy in Bologna. In Tokyo, Jan-Lennard Struff and Yannick Hanfmann got former three-time winners Germany off the mark against Japan. Struff battled past Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 with Hanfmann seeing off Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 6-3. In Groningen, Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry beat Jesper De Jong 6-4, 6-4 and Francisco Cerundolo dispatched Botic Van De Zandschulp 7-6 (7/4), 6-1. "It's tough to swallow," said De Jong as the Netherlands need to win Saturday's doubles to stay in the competition. "It was an amazing atmosphere which I tried to use. I'm gutted I didn't get the win for them." Davis Cup novice Corentin Moutet got France off the mark on indoor clay in Croatia beating Dino Prizmic 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in Osijek. The 26-year-old Frenchman had to work hard in a match that lasted 3hr 17min against the 20-year-old Prizmic who has moved up from 400th to 119th in the ATP rankings this year. Arthur Rinderknech later eased past veteran Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-4 in the second rubber. "It's an ideal scenario. We obviously prefer to finish at 2-0 even if I know full well that the hardest part is tomorrow," said France captain Paul-Henri Mathieu. In Debrecen, 173rd-ranked Jurij Rodionov gave Austria their first point against Hungary with an upset of 59th-ranked Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5. Lukas Neumayer later dispatched Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7) to leave the hosts with a mountain to climb to advance to the finals. "It was a crazy match," said 23-year-old Rodionov. Pakistan begin their 2025 Asia Cup campaign with a massive 93-run win over Oman on Friday (Sep 12) in Dubai. Defending a modest 162, the Pakistani bowlers did the damage, starting with opener Saim Ayub, who, after getting out on a duck in the first innings, picked up Oman’s captain Jatinder Singh on his first ball before accounting for his opening partner Aamir Kaleem in his next over. Matthew Hayden has inflicted enormous pain on countless bowlers with his attacking brand of cricket playing at the top, talking long and bold strides to take on even the best of bowlers, but they were never bold enough as to what he recently said. On the day when Team England celebrated their 20th anniversary of winning the infamous 2005 home Ashes, Hayden’s recent remarks have stunned the internet. The dashing left-handed opener claimed to walk around nude at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during the upcoming Ashes, which starts November 21 in Perth. So, why would Hayden, of all people and former cricketers, make a statement like this? While discussing on ‘All Over Bar The Cricket’ YouTube channel, Hayden said England batting veteran Joe Root might just end his century drought Down Under, and that he might do it at the best venue in Australia, the MCG. Given the form Root is in and considering the batting conditions at the 'G', hitting a Test hundred at that venue could become a reality; however, should he fail, Hayden would do the unthinkable. Also read | Asia Cup: IPL chairman, who directed fans' evacuation during Operation Sindoor, breaks silence on IND-PAK tie “I will walk nude around the MCG if he (Root) doesn't make a hundred this summer,” Hayden said. That comment in particular drew worldwide attention, with Hayden’s daughter, Grace Hayden, a sports presenter, begging Root to save her father from embarrassment.
Root, ‘almost the greatest ever!
Joe Root, 34, is widely regarded as among the best Test batters of today’s game. Leading the runs tally for his country and only second to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the most runs in Test cricket, Root’s rise to the top (since January 2020) is impeccable. Having hit 39 Test hundreds and counting, Root sits in the fourth spot for most Test tons by a batter, two shy of equalling Ponting’s tally and six to equal Jacques Kallis’. Despite such credentials to his name, Root is not considered the greatest ever, and the only reason that excludes him from that conversation is that he hasn’t scored a Test hundred Down Under. However, considering this could be his last tour to Australia, ending that debate must be on Root’s mind.

On the day when Team England celebrated their 20th anniversary of winning the infamous 2005 home Ashes, Hayden’s recent remarks have stunned the internet.

That comment in particular drew worldwide attention, with Hayden’s daughter, Grace Hayden, a sports presenter, begging Root to save her father from embarrassment. Commenting on the show’s Instagram account, she wrote in the comments, ‘Please Joe Root, make a hundred.’
