The first day of the Ashes 2025-26 in Perth on November 21 has been all about pace and best (brutal) ball from Mark Wood who was easily the fastest from both sides. The ball was 147 kmph delivery and caught 6 feet 6-inch batter completely off-guard.
India Test team captain Shubman Gill has been officially ruled out of the Guwahati Test, set to start on Saturday (Nov 22). The contest at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium will come too early for the Indian captain, who has been struggling with a neck spasm since the Kolkata Test. The spasm also saw him miss the Kolkata Test despite being in the Playing XI. In Gill’s absence, Rishabh Pant will lead the Indian team for the Guwahati Test, which will be his first as skipper in the red-ball format.

Starc strikes in first over again The Zak Crawley wicket was 24th time in Tests that Starc took a wicket in the very first over. Retired England bowler James Anderson leads the list of most wickets if first over of Tests with 29 scalps to his name. Starc, however, was far from done as he struck again in the seventh over of the innings again, this time trapping Ben Duckett Leg Before Wicket (LBW). Starc's biggest wicket of the morning came nearly two overs later as he sent back star England batter Joe Root for a duck. With the wicket, Starc also completed 100 wickets in the Ashes. By the time Starc was done with his first spell, England were three down for 50 runs. Inter Milan lead the pack, on goal difference from Roma, as Italy's top flight returns to the iconic arena after it hosted the national team's bracing defeat to Norway last weekend. After the derby Inter travel to Atletico Madrid where they can put one foot in the last 16 after winning all four of their previous European matches. Marcus Thuram could make his first start for Inter since September after fully recovering from a hamstring injury which caused him to miss out on France's World Cup qualifiers last week and in October. But Denzel Dumfries is likely to miss the derby with an ankle injury, meaning Carlos Augusto will switch from the left flank to provide width. Milan meanwhile have Adrien Rabiot back from his calf injury picked up on international duty with France last month, with coach Massimiliano Allegri hoping both he and midfield partner Luka Modric will play their first Milan derby. Champions Napoli are level on 22 points with Milan, but even though they are firmly in the title battle all is not well in Naples, with Antonio Conte being given a few days away to cool off during the international break. Conte exploded with anger after Napoli's 2-0 defeat at fifth-placed Bologna, who are only three points from the summit ahead of their trip to Udinese on Saturday. The 56-year-old said that he wasn't prepared to "accompany the dead", a reference to a team he said lacked heart and one that sparked rumours of him resigning before Saturday night's visit of Atalanta. Conte will be without key midfielder Andre-Frank Anguissa who suffered a hamstring injury with Cameroon, a knock which will keep him out until next year and infuriated Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, who demanded compensation to clubs who lose players to injury while they are away with their countries. Also on Saturday, Luciano Spalletti recommences his bid to revive Juventus at rock-bottom Fiorentina, where the 66-year-old played at youth level in the 1970s. Spalletti was born near Florence and Began his long managerial career up the road at Empoli over 30 years ago, and he returns to Tuscany with Fiorentina bottom of the division and desperate to turn their season around under new coach Paolo Vanoli. Player to watch: Ademola Lookman It has been a troubled season for Lookman, caused in part by his pushing for a summer move to Inter which led to him being frozen out by Atalanta's former coach Ivan Juric. But with Juric sacked and Raffaelle Palladino now in place it could be a new start for the Nigeria forward against Napoli in Naples. Lookman, who has only scored once since being brought back into the fold in September, was the star of Gian Piero Gasperini's final Atalanta team, and he will be key if Palladino is to pull the Bergamo club out of their current funk. The 28-year-old showed clear unhappiness with Juric after being substituted during Atalanta's Champions League win at Marseille but under Palladino has a chance to turn over a new leaf.

Smriti Mandhana has finally given fans the moment they've eagerly anticipated. Just days after rumours surfaced that the Indian cricket star is set to marry music composer-filmmaker Palash Muchhal on November 23, she posted a playful engagement-themed video featuring her teammates. At the end of the clip, she revealed her engagement ring, confirming the news and sending the internet into a frenzy. The video, shared by Mandhana on social media, showed her dancing with fellow members of India's Women’s World Cup-winning team, including Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, and rising talent Shreyanka Patil. The group danced to "Samjho Ho Hi Gaya" from Lage Raho Munna Bhai, creating a joyful pre-wedding vibe. Also Read: IND vs SA, 2nd Test: 'Gill is recovering well. This excitement was further fueled by a previous image of Palash holding the World Cup trophy next to Smriti, which had gone viral. Fans couldn't help but gush over the heartwarming moment, calling it the "perfect pre-wedding gift" for the cricketer. Palash was at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai when the Indian women’s cricket team won their first-ever ODI World Cup, defeating South Africa in the final earlier this month.
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has provided an update on Shubman Gill’s fitness ahead of the second Test against South Africa, set to begin in Guwahati on Saturday (November 22). Kotak confirmed that Gill is recovering well from the neck spasm he sustained during the first Test in Kolkata. However, the final decision regarding his participation will be made on Friday evening (November 21), after further assessments from the medical team. Ashes 2025-26: 5 key battles that could decide the series

Pranavi Urs got the better of overnight leader Karandeep Kochhar, producing a brilliant performance when it mattered most, and made history by winning the IGPL Mumbai Invitation, becoming the first Indian woman golfer to win a professional golf tournament while playing alongside men on the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) Tour. Pranavi carded a stunning 8-under 60, which was the week’s best card, at the par-68 Bombay Presidency Golf Club on the final day of the IGPL Invitational Mumbai.

Making her IGPL debut, Pranavi, who was trailing her boyfriend Kochhar by two shots overnight, played efficient and solid golf with eight birdies, the last of which appropriately came on the 18th to finish 14-under for the week as against Kochhar’s 64, which ended with his second eagle of the day. Kochhar totalled 12-under.

Kochhar was generous in his praise of Pranavi, “I had this feeling that she would win as she was playing so well. She outplayed us all, and even early in the round I realised I would have to play out of my skin to get the better of her.”

On beating the boys, Pranavi laughed and added, “I can't describe the feeling, but right now I feel like I'm still numb and I still haven't soaked it in that I've actually won. As for beating the boys, this is a great format and platform, and it is great to be able to play with the boys and see where your game is at with the boys.

“And as I also mentioned earlier, the girls are doing a lot better than the boys internationally. So I think getting that experience back home is, you know, an advantage for me,” she added.

Kochhar, on his own game, added, “I think I played really well today. I think I had really good putts today, but they just did not fall.
I had good looks, even in the end, like the 15th and the 17th. Just couldn't putt today. But I don't think it still would have mattered. I think Pranavi just outplayed all of us, not just me.”

“To be leading by one and shooting a 4-under on the final day, and yet to lose by 2 shots. There's no shame in that. You simply just have to tip your hat sometimes, and Pranavi was just amazing out there.”

Sachin Baisoya, still seeking his maiden IGPL title, was third yet again. This was the fourth time he had finished third in seven IGPL starts.

Baisoya, after a rather frustrating front nine during which he had just one birdie, had three more pars before finding some putting form. He birdied three times between the 13th and the 16th. On his back nine, he had five birdies in the last six holes, including four in the last four holes, for 6-under 62 to finish at 11-under.

Winner of the last IGPL event in Jamshedpur, Pukhraj Singh Gill (67) was one under for the day, and an early double bogey did him in. Despite a closing eagle, he totalled 8-under and was fourth.

Amateur Ranveer Mitroo, who recently represented India at the Asia Pacific Amateurs in Dubai, conjured up one of his best rounds in professional company with a 7-under 61 and finished a very creditable fifth.

Pranavi, playing in the lead group for the second straight day, opened her birdie count with a gain on the second hole, which brought her one closer to Kochhar.

Pranavi then made her move with back-to-back birdies on the fourth and the fifth. She went to four-under for the front nine with yet another birdie on the seventh. On the second nine, she did not take her foot off the pedal and birdied the 10th and the 12th.

After opening a three-shot lead early on the back nine, Pranavi neither relented nor erred, and her birdie on the Par-5 16th virtually sealed her win as she maintained her three-shot advantage. Her pursuers, Kochhar and Baisoya, also birdied the 16th and all three parred the Par-3 17th.

Pranavi, who was bogey-free all day, made no mistakes on the Par-5 18th, which she birdied for a fine finish to grab the Trophy and the winner’s cheque of Rs. 22.50,000. Kochhar won Rs. 15 lakhs as the runner-up.

Kochhar, who was tied 4th at Jaypee Greens, in his only IGPL appearance before this week, finished second at 12-under.

Pranavi was happy that she had come back after her wrist injury, which interrupted the early part of her season. She said, “Yes, I had a tear in my wrist, so it was a bit unfortunate because it was mid-season and the season was peaking in Europe.

But after that, I did well to come back. I made most of the cuts and put myself in a good position to secure my LET card for the next year.”

Kochhar, looking for a fast start, seemed to have got it with an eagle on the Par-5 fourth, but he dropped a shot on the sixth. There were no more birdies till the 12th, by which time Pranavi had made big gains and moved ahead. Kochhar’s birdie on the 12th was negated by a dropped shot on the 14th. By then, Pranavi had moved three shots clear.

Kochhar finished the week with yet another eagle before Pranavi sealed the final birdie and won by two shots to hoist her hands up, signalling a landmark win.

Indian-American Manav Shah (68) had a tough day, and the Asian Tour player, whose family originally hails from Gujarat, finished sole sixth at 5-under total. IGPL debutant, Vani Kapoor (64), with her 4-under, finally found some decent form and was Tied-seventh with the experienced M Dharma (65) and Olympian Udayan Mane (69).

IGPL Order of Merit leader, Aman Raj (70), legendary SSP Chawrasia (68), Sunhit Bishnoi (66), Shaurya Binu (69), and Tushar Pannu (69) were tied for tenth place at 2-under total.

Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. But I don't think it still would have mattered. I think Pranavi just outplayed all of us, not just me.” “To be leading by one and shooting a 4-under on the final day, and yet to lose by 2 shots. There's no shame in that. You simply just have to tip your hat sometimes, and Pranavi was just amazing out there.” Sachin Baisoya, still seeking his maiden IGPL title, was third yet again. I made most of the cuts and put myself in a good position to secure my LET card for the next year.” Kochhar, looking for a fast start, seemed to have got it with an eagle on the Par-5 fourth, but he dropped a shot on the sixth. There were no more birdies till the 12th, by which time Pranavi had made big gains and moved ahead. Kochhar’s birdie on the 12th was negated by a dropped shot on the 14th. By then, Pranavi had moved three shots clear.

Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith has hit back at Monty Panesar’s remarks concerning his involvement in the infamous Sandpapergate scandal, ahead of the 2025 Ashes series. Panesar, the former England spinner, had earlier suggested that England should make Smith feel guilty about his role in the 2018 ball-tampering incident against South Africa. He recommended that the English team openly question Smith’s ethics, saying things like, "I don't think it's right that he's the captain; he hasn't played the game fairly."

Also Read: Ashes 2025-26 preview: The battle for the Urn begins as England look to end 14 years of agony in Australia

When asked to respond to these comments during a press conference, Smith took a playful jab at Panesar, referencing his embarrassing appearance on BBC’s Mastermind in 2019, where Panesar struggled to answer basic questions. “I'm going to go off topic here. Who of you in the room has seen Mastermind and Monty Panesar on that? Any of you? Those of you that have will understand where I'm coming from. If you haven't, do yourself a favour because it is pretty comical. Anyone who believes that Athens is in Germany, Oliver Twist is a season of the year, and America is a city, it doesn't really bother me those comments. That's as far as I'll go with that one,” Smith was quoted as saying.

Watch the video here

Smith, who was banned for a year and stripped of the Australian captaincy following the Sandpapergate scandal, was at the center of the incident when Cameron Bancroft was caught trying to alter the ball with sandpaper. Smith, as captain, admitted to knowing about the plan, which led to a 12-month suspension for both him and David Warner. Bancroft received a nine-month ban. As the Ashes series approaches, Smith's retort to Panesar's comments is bound to add more intrigue to the much-anticipated battle between Australia and England, which kicks off on Friday (November 21) at Perth Stadium.

Steve Smith dismissed former England players' criticism over Sandpapergate, referencing his poor performance on BBC's Mastermind as a rebuttal ahead of the first Test of the Ashes series

He recommended that the English team openly question Smith’s ethics, saying things like, "I don't think it's right that he's the captain; he hasn't played the game fairly." Who of you in the room has seen Mastermind and Monty Panesar on that?
