When Amina Lanaya, Director General of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), speaks about cycling, she doesn’t just talk about races; she talks about legacy, universality, and belief. Standing on Indian soil during the Pune Grand Tour 2026, her message was clear: something big is already happening, and something even bigger is coming. “Something big is already happening now with the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026,” Lanaya said, hinting at ambitions to upgrade the race’s status as early as next year. The vision, she explained, is not just to grow another event, but to build a reference point for Asia over the next five years, backed jointly by local authorities, the national federation, and the UCI itself. What impressed the UCI most was not just scale, but speed and quality. Organised in just six months, the Pune Grand Tour delivered a level of professionalism that Lanaya openly admired. “We are really impressed by the quality of this organisation,” she said, underlining that safety, rider participation, international representation, and logistics remain non-negotiable benchmarks for race upgradation. But beyond logistics and governance, it was the Indian public that left the strongest impression on her. “The crowds along the roads, but not only the crowds, the smiling faces,” Lanaya noted. Cycling, she pointed out, is a rare elite sport that remains accessible to spectators, free of ticket barriers. That accessibility, combined with initiatives like the blue jersey for the top Indian rider, helps fans connect with heroes of their own. At the heart of UCI’s India push is inspiration. Lanaya wants cycling to move beyond being just a transport tool or niche pursuit. “I would like cycling to take the same place in the hearts of Indians as cricket does, or maybe more,” she said, only half-joking. Also Read: IND vs NZ 3rd T20I: Mentor Yuvraj takes sly dig at Abhishek Sharma’s 14-ball fifty, says ‘still can’t get…’ The conversation also touched on tougher global issues, including Olympic quota cuts to ensure gender parity. Lanaya acknowledged the difficulty of reducing rider slots for traditional powerhouses but stressed the importance of universality and equality. “We are here to globalize cycling and to give more opportunities to countries that need our help and support,” she explained. For India and Asia, that support won’t stop at hosting events. The UCI plans to actively develop riders through its World Cycling Centre in Switzerland and regional satellites across Asia. The goal: talent identification, structured development, and international race exposure, across road cycling, BMX, and other disciplines that offer easy entry points for young riders. Importantly, Lanaya made it clear that success will depend on collaboration. National federations, local organisers, and governing bodies must work together to ensure talent doesn’t just emerge, it stays, grows, and wins. Her confidence comes from precedent. The UCI’s World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda, once viewed with hesitation, turned into a global success story. “Asia is capable,” she said firmly, “and has proven that it can do even more, and do better than any other country.” As for other Indian cities aspiring to host UCI-accredited races, her advice was refreshingly practical: learn from Pune. Work with district collectors, align with the national federation, and understand the broader impact, from tourism to economic growth to global visibility. The roadmap, Lanaya hinted, could one day lead India not just to bigger tours, but to hosting UCI World Championships themselves.

In response, Manipur struggled to build partnerships and could manage only 264 runs, leaving Bihar with a huge first-innings lead and full control of the game. The second innings belonged to opener Piyush Singh, who played the innings of his career, scoring an unbeaten 216 from 322 balls. He combined patience with smart attacking shots to tire out the Manipur bowlers. Raghuvendra Pratap Singh supported him with a strong 90, helping Bihar post 505 for six before declaring early in the day. This set Manipur a mammoth target of 764 runs, which was very difficult to achieve. Bihar’s bowlers quickly wrapped up as spinners Suraj Kumar Kashyap and Himanshu Singh struck early, reducing Manipur to 50 for five in just 14 overs. Despite a brief fightback from 19-year-old Pheiroijam Jotin, who scored 74, pacer Akash Raj ended their resistance. Manipur were bowled out for 195, handing Bihar a massive 568-run victory.

Pakistan’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 remains uncertain as the final call is now set to be taken by the country’s top leadership. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently held a crucial meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the issue, signalling that the matter has moved beyond cricket administration. The 2022 edition runners-up have been placed in Group A alongside India, the USA, the Netherlands and Namibia, with all their group matches scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka under the hybrid model. Earlier, reports suggested that Pakistan had even threatened to boycott the tournament in solidarity with the Bangladesh Cricket Board after Bangladesh refused to travel to India, citing security concerns. Mohsin Naqvi shared the update through his official X handle after the meeting, writing, “Had a productive meeting with the Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif. Briefed him on the ICC matter, and he directed that we resolve it while keeping all options on the table. It was agreed that the final decision will be taken either on Friday or next Monday.” Also read | Who was IS Bindra? The development comes shortly after the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to replace Bangladesh with Scotland. Bangladesh had pulled out due to security concerns over travelling to India, a move that created fresh controversy and uncertainty around the competition. The ICC’s firm stance reportedly caused unease within the PCB, which had publicly backed Bangladesh during the dispute. Uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation intensified on Saturday (Jan 24) when Naqvi confirmed that the final decision would be made by the federal government. This made it clear that the issue is no longer limited to cricket administration and now involves diplomatic and political considerations. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to begin on 7 February, with Pakistan originally scheduled to start their campaign against the Netherlands. They are then due to face the USA on 10 February, followed by the high-voltage match against India on 15 February. Pakistan will conclude their group stage against Namibia on 18 February. As per the current plan, all of Pakistan’s group matches will be played in Sri Lanka under the hybrid model. If Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals and the final, both matches are scheduled to take place in Colombo. Otherwise, the knockout fixtures will be held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Jannik Sinner defeated fellow Italian Luciano Darderi in straight sets to move into the Australian Open quarter-finals at the Margaret Court Arena on Monday (Jan 26). The world No. 2 was sharp from the first game and stayed in control with his strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. The Italian won the match 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(2) and showed why he is one of the favourites for the title this year. Although Darderi tried to fight back in the third set and pushed Sinner into a tie-break, Sinner stayed calm and finished the match with confidence. It was another solid performance from the defending champion as he continues his strong run in Melbourne and keeps his dream of a third straight Australian Open title alive.

From the start, Sinner looked comfortable on the court and wasted no time in putting Darderi under pressure. He broke early in the first set and used his pace and accuracy to control the rallies. Darderi tried to stay aggressive, but Sinner’s depth and consistency made it difficult for him to find openings. The first set was over quickly, showing the gap in confidence and experience between the two players on this big stage. Also read | ‘I'm upset’: Djokovic’s playful reply after Sabalenka breaks his Grand Slam record The second set followed a similar story. Sinner continued to dominate with his serve and kept pushing Darderi back with powerful baseline shots. He mixed his play well, using sharp angles and timely drop shots to keep his opponent guessing. Darderi showed flashes of quality but struggled to hold his ground for long stretches. Sinner’s calm approach helped him close the set without any trouble.
Third set was decided by a tie-breaker
The match became more competitive in the third set when Darderi lifted his level and played with greater freedom. He started taking more risks and found better timing on his shots, which brought energy to the contest. The crowd got involved as the rallies became longer and more intense. For a moment, it looked like Sinner could be pushed into a longer battle. However, Sinner showed his mental strength in the tie-break. He stayed focused, served well under pressure, and played with confidence when it mattered the most. With this victory, Sinner reached another Australian Open quarter-final and continued his impressive record against fellow Italian players.

It helps to share my experience with them because they keep asking questions. "We have game after game, a lot of travel, we came back late at night (from Prague in midweek), almost no days off, and that's what you also have to see," Flick told reporters, defending his players after they struggled to make inroads in the first half. "In the first half we struggled a little bit, we didn't have the confidence we normally need... but in the end the second half was much better." The coach praised Yamal for his hard work in terms of pressing and said it was even more crucial than his impressive strike. "For me, much more important was the first goal, how he pressed, that he recovered the ball, that we scored the first goal because that was the key to open this game for us and get the three points," explained Flick. "It was more important than the third goal, but everyone loves to see this in football, and I'm happy he scored such a (great) goal." Barca could not get out of first gear in a dry first half, and their passing was unusually imprecise. Injured midfield maestro Pedri Gonzalez watched on from the stands with an unimpressed expression. They came out with renewed energy for the second half and soon took the lead. After Yamal and Raphinha pressed in the box, the ball broke loose to Olmo, who steered home. Oviedo gave away a poor second goal after 57 minutes, with Raphinha running on to an undercooked back-pass from David Costas and lobbing home. Barcelona's third was expertly taken by Yamal, as Olmo's cross was falling behind him, he produced an eye-catching sideways scissor-kick to wrap up the victory. "We are talking about a player from another galaxy," said Oviedo coach Guillermo Almada of Barca's 18-year-old star. “He has so much quality and delivers in key moments in games.” (With inputs from AFP)

Perth Scorchers extended their Big Bash League (BBL) dominance by winning a record sixth title, beating Sydney Sixers by six wickets at Perth Stadium on Sunday (Jan 25). Chasing 133, Scorchers made a strong start with openers Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen putting on 80 runs in just over eight overs, putting the Sixers under pressure early. Despite a couple of quick dismissals, big-hitter Josh Inglis guided the team home, finishing the match with a six. Earlier, the Scorchers’ bowlers did a brilliant job, restricting the Sixers to 132, with Jhye Richardson and David Payne taking three wickets each, while Mahli Beardman claimed two.

Openers set the tone, Inglis seals win
The Scorchers’ chase was powered by an explosive opening stand between Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen. Marsh looked in complete control, playing aggressive shots through the off-side, while Allen complemented him with clean hitting and quick running between the wickets. Their partnership of 80 runs in just 8.2 overs effectively ended the Sixers’ hopes of a comeback. Also read | Meet top 5 batters fastest to 21,000 international runs After their dismissal, Aaron Hardie and skipper Ashton Turner failed to make a mark, leaving the team needing a solid finish. That responsibility fell on Josh Inglis, whose experience and big-hitting ability ensured a comfortable finish. Inglis’ final six not only sealed the win but also highlighted his value as a match-winner in high-pressure situations.
Scorchers’ bowling dominates Sixers
The victory was set up by Perth’s disciplined bowling attack. After electing to field first, Jhye Richardson and David Payne led the way with three wickets each, while Mahli Beardman chipped in with two crucial dismissals. The Sixers struggled to build partnerships, with Steve Smith, Josh Philippe, and Moises Henriques all falling for just 24 runs respectively. None of the batters managed to score big, and the total of 132 was always going to be challenging to defend against a strong Scorchers batting lineup. This win marks Perth’s ninth appearance in a BBL final and reinforces their position as the most consistent team in the league’s history. With six titles to their name, the Scorchers continue to set the benchmark for excellence in the Big Bash League.

Perth Scorchers claim record sixth BBL title, defeating Sydney Sixers with strong batting and bowling performances, continuing their dominance in the Big Bash League.

Bangladesh will not participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the ICC replacing them with Scotland in Group C. Irked with the lack of clarity on this, the BCB retaliated by first suspending all IPL-related activities in India and then by formally writing to the ICC, urging them to move its scheduled league matches from India to Sri Lanka (the tournament’s co-host). The ICC rejected BCB's plea on two occasions, eventually replacing them with Scotland for the T20 World Cup.

He added that the BCB also offered several proposals to the ICC, including swapping groups with one of Ireland or Zimbabwe (both in Group B); the ICC denied doing so, citing Sri Lanka’s refusal to have a new team in the group. “We have tried our best. We fully respect the ICC Board, and the Board’s majority decision was that the match cannot be relocated,” Hossain said. “Even after that, we tried in our own way and made requests. Since they will not do it or do not want to, there is nothing more we can do.” Meanwhile, it all unfolded after the BCCI instructed IPL team KKR to release seamer Mustafizur Rahman over recent chaos and regular attacks on the minorities in Bangladesh.

With the first showpiece event of the year starting in less than two weeks, the BCB has accepted ICC’s decision and vows not to take any legal action against it.
