
WWE legend and 16-time world champion John Cena has announced his official retirement. At the Money in the Bank (MITB) 2024 live event (on Jul7)in Toronto, Canada, Cena shocked everyone with a surprise return and announced his decision to retire as an in-ring competitor. Cena, 47, said 2025 will be the last year the fans can see him compete as an active WWE superstar, adding WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas will be his final Showcase of the Immortals.

Cena said he would compete at next year’s Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 41, while his goal remains to make more appearances throughout the year before he calls it quits.
The legendary WWE star admitted going by what's discussed with the creative behind the scenes, considering his other commitments, Cena can be available for 30-40 dates in 2025.
"Why am I here?" Cena said. "Tonight, I officially announce my retirement from the WWE,” he continued after former Women’s Champion and Canadian superwoman Trish Stratus welcomed her to the ring.
Although a section of fans expected this announcement once Cena emerged onto the scene in Toronto, they went into a frenzy after he made it official that he wished to step aside from the in-ring competition.
Considered by many as the greatest-ever to grace this business, the fans started chanting ‘Thank You Cena’.
However, outside of pursuing his career in WWE for over two decades, Cena now works as a Hollywood actor, popularly known for his roles as The Peacemaker in the 2021 Suicide Squad and Fast X.
Following the MITB live event, Cena appeared in the post-event presser, explaining his decision to retire from the in-ring competition. Though he remains excited about his final run in the WWE, Cena admits he enjoyed his time as a superstar in this industry and is grateful for all the chances he ever got.
Meanwhile, former WWE Champion CM Punk and the COO, Triple H, showered praise on Cena.
Punk, who cost Drew McIntyre another shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at MITB 2024, said knowing Cena will leave next year, he can be the one to pull him out of retirement.
Besides, Triple H said Cena’s accomplishments are second to none, calling him one of the best WWE superstars.
However, it remains to be seen if WWE brings Cena into any storyline heading into the SummerSlam 2024.
