Former chess world champion Viswanathan Anand along with Indian cricketer Yuvzendra Chahal, world no.2 Vidit Gujrathi, Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev, Croatia’s Antonio Radic and stand-up comedians comprising Biswa Kalyan Rath, Samay Raina, Abhishek Upamanyu and Aakash Mehta took part in an online chess charity event as they raised a whopping Rs 8.86 lakh for the waste-pickers community in testing times of COVID-19 pandemic.

“Chess For Charity” event saw some big names in the world of chess, cricket and comedy, collaborate for a noble cause to raise funds for the waste-pickers community. Anand, who is currently in Frankfurt, Germany, has already taken part in a simultaneous online event on April 11 where an amount of Rs 4.5 lakh was raised for the Prime Minister’s CARES Fund.

“An amount of Rs 8.86 lakh was raised from the event which featured Anand and Gujrathi among others. It was a great gesture by the chess players,” Rakesh Kulkarni, an International Master and Director chess.com-India told PTI.

Chess Kerala is also set to conduct Checkmate COVID-19 International Online Blitz Tournament on May 22 in a bid to raise funds for the Kerala government’s battle against the dreaded coronavirus. The funds raised from the event will go straight to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. The tournament has no entry fee but participants would need to contribute a minimum of Rs 250 with a prize fund of Rs 52,000.

Chess is one of the sports to have gained a lot of traction with online events and tournaments taking place as every other sport continues to suffer amid COVID-19 pandemic.
