Probe ordered into alleged antisemitism during Israel's football match

A case to probe the possible antisemitism crimes at a football match in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 has been opened by the host city prosecutor's office. One of the incidents related to crimes happened on Saturday (Jul 27) during a football match between Israel and Paraguay.

The Olympic organisers lodged a complaint with the Paris police after a "banner bearing a political message was displayed" at the Group D football game on July 27, said a spokesperson.

One of the spokesperson also said that the organisation "strongly condemns these acts."

"Paris 2024 is committed to combating all forms of discrimination, which are in every way contrary to the Olympic and Paralympic values. We would like to remind everyone that the Games are a time for harmony and tolerance," the organisers added as reported by BBC Sport.

The football match in question, however, was won by Israel 4-2.

The prosecutors office also said that they are investigating the death threats received by three Israeli athletes at the games.

France interior minister Gerald Darmanin reported the death threats against the Israeli athletes and the country's national anti-online hate body will be heading the probe.

Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was removed from her country's Olympic contingent and has been asked to fly home after breaking a rule at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The swimmer has been reprimanded for sneaking out of the Olympic Village for a night out with her boyfriend.

Ana Carolina spent the night of July 26 outside the Olympic Village with her boyfriend and fellow teammate, Gabriel Santos. She left the village without permission and the information was found out via a post on her official Instagram handle.

Vieira's partner Santos, however, was let go with a warning and apologising after the incident.
