Paris Games: Sha’Carri Richardson in limelight over Nike’s apparal unvieling
Apparel giant Nike’s On Air Event 2024 in Paris, France – the venue for the Summer Games in July, might have made headlines for obvious reasons, but it did irk a fan base that now calls for protest. Nike’s latest campaign was about unveiling kits for different sports, including track and field, basketball, soccer and skateboarding, to be donned by Team USA and other countries at the Summer Games in July-August.
With that said, they brought some of the top names from those sports during the event, including American star sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson, who was even part of the show where the athletes dressed in Nike casual wear and got onto the stage.

To make this event a success, Nike introduced athletes’ statues, including that of Richardson, Kylian Mbappe and basketball veteran LeBron James, ignoring the face of women's track and field over the years and another Nike athlete, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, angeringJamaican fans who demanded a complete boycott of the brand later.
While those statues looked beautiful in Nike’s iconic orange colour, the fans could spot a certain miss in that, with them taking to social media to express their disappointment.

What further irked Fraser Pryce’s fans is the social media post of Richardson in collaboration with Whoop – a wearable tech firm whose primary product is a fitness tracker, where she is spotted wearing an all-green attire, resembling Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce’s dress she wore during an endorsement for Richard Mile campaign last year.
With such episodes unfolding just a few months before the start of the 2024 Summer Games, it has ignited a fresh rivalry between the two massive stars in women’s track and field.
Two stars colliding
USA’s Richardson is a two-time world champion, and would have been an Olympic champion had it not been for the infamous cannabis testing saga ahead of the Tokyo Games.
However, her rival and by distance the greatest female track and field athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser is an eight-time Olympic medallist and has won 17 world championship medals.
With regards to Personal Best (PBs), USA’s Richardson has clocked 10.65s in the 100m sprint, while the Jamaican veteran has a PB of 10.60s. In the 200m category, Richardson's PB is 21.92s and Shelly-Ann Fraser registered a time of 21.79s.
Meanwhile, during the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Sha’Carri defeated Fraser in the 100m race, winning gold in 10.65s while the Jamaican won the bronze medal in 10.77s.
