The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will listen to Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s plea on Friday (Aug 9) after she filed a petition for reconsideration of her Paris Olympics disqualification. Vinesh, on Wednesday, was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle category gold medal match after she was found overweight during the official weigh-in. The Indian government on the other hand has approached Harish Salve to represent Phogat at the CAS hearing which takes place at 10 am local time on Friday.
With the Indian wrestler’s plea being accepted by the CAS on Thursday, the hearing was scheduled for Thursday evening. However, according to the latest developments, the hearing was postponed to Friday morning. The CAS has also asked the Indian wrestler to finalise a lawyer before the hearing takes place on Friday. The Indian government is looking to hire senior lawyer Salve who has represented the nation at the International Court of Justice in the past.
Earlier on Thursday, Vinesh announced that she is retiring from the sport with the Paris Olympics being her last official tournament.
In an extremely sad post, Vinesh apologised to her mother, saying "Mother, wrestling won and I lost to it, please forgive me. Your dreams, my strength, everything is shattered, I don't have any more strength left in me."
Vinesh was disqualified after being found 100 grams overweight at the official weigh-in on the morning of the final on Wednesday (Aug 7).
Indian Olympic contingent's chief physician Dinshaw Pardiwala informed earlier that the support staff did all they could to bring the weight down but unfortunately failed. She was later hospitalised at a local polyclinic as a precaution.
Phogat was discharged from the polyclinic after recuperating from dehydration for trying to lose weight ahead of the final.
