Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was penalised for 'verbal abuse' against a game official during his team's 26-25 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday (Sep 15).
The 15-yard penalty pegged the Bengals back on their drive in the final quarter which eventually resulted in a field goal. Cincinnati were leading 25-23 after the field goal with 9:28 left in the final quarter and went on to loss the game.
The incident happened after Chase believed he had been tackled with hip-drop by Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie on the third play of the Bengals' drive. The hip-drop has been banned by the National Football League (NFL) because of the injury risk.
Referee Alex Kemp threw the flag after the interaction with Chase and informed in the pool report that 'abusive language' led to the penalty on Chase.
"The simple answer is, profanity used by grown men versus direct, personal abusive language towards a game official," Kemp said on difference between disagreement and abuse. "That's the line. When that line gets crossed, we simply can't let that happen in pro football."
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was seen restraining Chase after the play and before the flag was thrown.
"Just trying to deescalate the situation," Burrow said. "I'm not entirely sure what was said or who threw the flag."
The loss makes this fifth 0-2 start for the Bengals in the last six seasons.
