Draft 2024: Kirk Cousins 'disappointed and shocked' after Falcons pick QB in first-round

Kirk Cousins has been left in shock by the Atlanta Falcons' decision to pick a quarterback in the NFL Draft 2024 on Thursday (Apr 25). The Falcons picked Michael Penix Jr. for the eighth overall pick, leaving Cousins' future with the franchise uncertain. This comes after Cousins left the Minnesota Vikings earlier this offseason to go to Atlanta on a four-year, $180 million deal.
Cousins was with the Vikings for six seasons before he decided to switch the sides to start afresh. The current scenario, however, doesn't look too positive for Cousins to spend four years with the Falcons.

Reacting to the news, Mike McCartney, Cousins' agent, said expressed shock on behalf of the QB and told NFL Network: “Yes, it was a big surprise. We had no idea this was coming. The truth is the whole league had no idea this was coming. We got no heads up. Kirk got a call from the Falcons when they were on the clock. That was the first we heard. It never came up in any conversation.”
Another reporter, Dianna Russini of The Athletic, posted on X: "The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know. From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round. I’m told he’s a bit stunned."
Cousins thankfully has a no-trade clause in his contract with $100 million guaranteed. It would be interesting to see now that how the Falcons create an opportunity for Penix after blindsiding Cousins.
