Sarfaraz Khan hit his maiden Test hundred against New Zealand on day four of the ongoing first Test in Bengaluru as Team India closes the first-inning deficit gap. The right-handed batter became only the seventh player in this century to score a Test ton while batting at number four for India, joining the elite list of the great Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Ajinkya Rahane.

Having scored a duck in the first innings, in which India got all out on 46 – their lowest Test total at home, Sarfaraz returned stronger in the next.

He first paced the innings alongside Virat Kohli late on day three, remaining unbeaten on 70 at stumps, and then with Rishabh Pant, who returned to the field after suffering a blow to his knee while keeping earlier, completed his maiden Test hundred.

He attacked the opposition from the word go, smashing the Kiwi pacers and spinners to all parts of the ground. Sarfaraz looked composed in his approach and game, and with Pant around at the other end, Sarfaraz put the fourth gear early on day four.

Meanwhile, this is Sarfaraz’s 16th first-class hundred and second in consecutive matches. Dropped from the side for the Bangladesh Tests earlier, Sarfaraz made a statement with a stunning double hundred for Mumbai in the Irani Cup against the Rest of India, becoming the batter from Mumbai to achieve this feat.
