'I am thankful...,' Paris Gold medalist Arshad Nadeem gets hero's welcome upon arrival in Pakistan - WATCH

Pakistan's Olympics gold medalist Arshad Nadeem was given a hero's welcome upon his arrival in the country on Saturday (Aug 10). Nadeem became Pakistan's first individual gold medalist at the Olympics after winning men's javelin throw final at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

"I reached my country and I saw the love of our people in my town. I am thankful to all the people who have showered me with this love which is more than medal. I am also thankful for such a welcome," he told WION's Anas Mallick in a chat.

"Struggle is part of every athletes life, be it me or Neeraj. He also had blessings and I also had blessings. I am very happy that we are the only two players from South Asia, who have performed all over the world," Nadeem added.

Nadeem's mother also shared her thoughts on the gold medal win and said: "I am thankful to Allah, thankful to all citizens of Pakistan - all wishers of my son. All mothers' wishes are always listened to by Allah."

She also spoke about Nadeem's work ethic and said: "My son works so hard, he promised me that - he needs my blessing and will bring medal for the country - I will bring glory for the Nation."

Arshad's mother also praised Paris silver medalist India's Neeraj Chopra and said: "Neeraj Chopra is my son's friend- Neeraj Chopra is like my son. Win or loss is about luck for a player."

Earlier, Neeraj's mother had also called Arshad her son after the Pakistan athlete won gold at Paris Games.

Nadeem will also be conferred with the country's second highest civil award Hilal–i-Imtiaz for winning a gold medal. The awardto Nadeem was announced by Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari through a statement on Saturday (Aug 10).

Nadeem threw for 92.97 metres to set a new Olympic record for his gold while Tokyo 2021 gold winner Neeraj finished second with a throw of 89.45 metres.
