Al Hilal stars Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo paid their heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota after the Portugal and Liverpool star was killed in a tragic car accident in Spain on Thursday (July 3). Neves and Cancelo who played with Jota for Portugal were seen emotional before the Club World Cup quarterfinal contest against Fluminense. The Liverpool forward was remembered for his services having died at the mere age of 28 while being in the prime of football career.
Neves, Cancelo pay tribute to Jota
Before the Club World Cup contest between Al Hilal and Fluminense, both teams gathered for a minute’s silence. A tribute was played for the 28-year-old Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who also lost his life in the tragic accident on Thursday. Both Neves and Cancelo were seen in tears as they started the contest against Fluminense.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was also spotted in the stands as he and other members of the delegation paid tribute to the Liverpool star.
What happened with Jota?
Jota was reportedly traveling with his brother Andre, a 26-year-old Penafiel player who was also killed when the car came off the road and was engulfed in flames. As reported by Spanish news agency EFE, neither Jota nor his brother survived the accident. Jota’s death comes as a huge loss for Liverpool and Portugal having played a key role in the club’s rise.

"A vehicle left the road and everything indicates a tyre burst while overtaking," it said in a statement.
"As a result of the accident, the car caught fire and both people were killed. Pending the completion of forensic tests, one of the deceased has been identified as Diogo Jota, a Liverpool FC player, and his brother, Andre Felipe."
The forward was signed by Liverpool in 2020 for a fee of £40million ($50million) from Wolves and has been an integral part of the team set-up since.
