Diogo Jota along with his brother Andre Silva (also a footballer) was killed in a fatal car accident in Spain’s Zamora province on 3 July 2025. According to the Spanish Police’s initial investigation, excessive speed could be one of the reasons behind the tragedy.
The potential reason behind the fatal car accident of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has been revealed after the Spanish police are in the final stage of their investigation. The 28-year-old along with his brother Andre Silva (also a footballer) was killed in a fatal car accident in Spain’s Zamora province on 3 July 2025. According to the Spanish Police’s initial investigation, excessive speed could be one of the reasons behind the tragedy.
Excessive speed killed Diogo Jota, Andre Silva?
"Everything also points to a possible excessive speed beyond the speed limit of the road [highway]," said Zamora's local traffic police.
Police said they had studied the marks left by one of the Lamborghini's tyres and that "all the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota".
The expert report is being prepared for the courts on the accident, and their investigation is understood to have been made more complex by the intensity of the fire that almost completely destroyed the car.
Jota was traveling with his brother Andre who was also killed when a green Lamborghini car came off the road and was engulfed in flames. As reported by Spanish news agency EFE, neither Jota nor his brother survived the accident.

The forward was signed by Liverpool in 2020 for a fee of £40million ($50million) from Wolves and has been an integral part of the team set-up since.

In total, he played 123 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League and scored 47 goals while further scoring 18 more in other competitions. Before Liverpool, he played for Wolves in the Premier League for two seasons scoring 16 goals.
Jota’s national and club teammates were seen attending the funeral held on the outskirts of Porto on Saturday including the likes of Ruben Neves, Virgil van Dijk and others. However, one particular name absent from the list of attendees was Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who opted to skip the funeral of his international teammate.
Shared international stage with Cristiano Ronaldo
Jota was Cristiano Ronaldo’s international teammate as they both shared the dressing room with Portugal. Together they won the 2019 and 2025 UEFA Nations League while representing the national team on 49 occasions. During those appearances he also scored 14 goals, making him fans' favourite.
