China Open kicks off with star-studded female lineup

China Open kicks off with star-studded female lineup

The China Open tennis tournament was set to kick off on Sunday with the some of the world's biggest names in the female lineup, while some of the heavyweights of the men's competition withdrew.

Romanian Simona Halep, winner of this year's French Open, is seeded first in the women's competition and will play her first-round match against Tunisia's Ons Jabeur on Sunday in Beijing.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, the Australian Open Champion, is seeded second and faces Switzerland's Belinda Bencic in the first round, while German third-seed Angelique Kerber, who won Wimbledon this year, will play Kristina Mladenovic of France.

Caroline Garcia of France, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, Czech Karolina Pliskova and Japan's Naomi Osaka are other top-seeded female players in the tournament.

Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro, currently ranked fourth in the ATP world rankings and the winner of Indian Wells and Acapulco tournaments this year, is the top seed in the men's draw on Monday.

Germany's Alexander Zverev is listed as the second seed after winning in Washington, Madrid and Munich this year, followed by Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov.

Italians Fabio Fognini and Marco Cechhinato, Brit Kyle Edmund, American Jack Sock and Croatian Borna Coric are other players given top billing.

Spain's Rafael Nadal, Briton Andy Murray, Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Switzerland's Roger Federer all withdrew due to injuries or for rest reasons.
