Chattogram, Bangladesh

Bangladesh cricket experienced another low on Saturday (Mar 30) from the social media trolls after a hilarious decision to review a call went wrong. Bangladesh, fielding on Day 1 of the second Test match in Chattogram had a moment to forget as they look to make a comeback in the two-match Test series where they are currently trailing 1-0. Having lost the opening Test by 328 runs, Bangladesh will look to get points on the table in the World Test Championship (WTC) table.

Bangladesh make hilarious DRS call

On the fifth ball of the 44th over, Taijul Islam’s delivery was well defended by batter Kusal Mendis as the ball tried to move away. However, Bangladesh bowlers and fielders appealed for an LBW and looked confident about the same. However, umpire Rod Tucker immediately turned down the appeal insisting the ball was defended with the bat.

This did not go well with the Bangladesh side and upon close thinking, they decided to take the Decision Review System (DRS). Third umpire Chris Gaffaney was approached for the DRS call by standing umpire Tucker. However, much to the frustration of the Bangladesh side, the first frame of replay showed that Mendis had defended with the bat and the ball was nowhere close to the pads, leaving everyone red-faced from the fielding side.

Fans on the internet though were not sitting back and took a dig at the hosts for taking a DRS for a delivery that was clearly hitting the bat and not the pad.

What has happened in the BAN-SL series?

So far it has been an entertaining series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, despite being in the shadows of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sri Lanka won the T20I series 2-1 before Bangladesh mounted a comeback in the ODI series and won by the same margin. The attention then turned to the Test series, where Bangladesh were on the receiving end of a poor result in the Sylhet Test.

The hosts lost by 328 runs, in one of the heaviest defeats in Test cricket and on their home turf. A win for them in this Test will see them level the series at 1-1, but a draw will see them lose the series.
