The Met department has issued 'Red' alert for Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Dehradun and Bageshwar districts of Uttarakhand for 24 hours.&nbsp;Heavy rains have led to roads being obstructed at &nbsp;multiple places between Sirobagad, Bansawada (Syalsaud), and Kund to Chopta in Rudraprayag, authorities said.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Vasu Kedar area is where the damage has occurred in many gram panchayats, said Rudraprayag District Magistrate Prateek Jain.&nbsp;"Another area, Chenagarh, suffered major loss from a landslide, with 4-5 shops and buildings buried. It's suspected that 8-10 people inside are buried under the debris," Jain further said.

The report is based on feedback from 12,770 women across 31 cities in all the states of India. According to sources, 7 per cent of women said that they faced harassment in 2024, with young women between 18 and 24 being most vulnerable (weak and easy to hurt physically or emotionally). This figure is far higher than the official crime records from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of 2022.The types of harassment women reported include staring, catcalling, vulgar remarks and unwanted physical contact on the streets. Poor lighting, weak public transport and lack of proper infrastructure were seen as major reasons.&nbsp;Cities such as Kolkata, Delhi, Ranchi, Srinagar and Faridabad were rated among the least safe, while Mumbai, Kohima, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok and Itanagar were seen as safer states.The report also highlights that it goes beyond official statistics by covering daily experiences and unreported cases of harassment against women. Many women avoid reporting crimes due to fear of further harassment. Only 22 per cent of those surveyed said that they reported their problems and experiences to higher authorities.It also found that 53% of women were unsure if their workplace had a Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) policy, even though it is legally required now. &nbsp;The report was released by National Commission for Women chairperson, Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar, and the report was prepared by Pvalue Analytics and published by the Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA). Rahatkar said that the findings will help to improve women’s safety at home, workplaces and public spaces.“The launch of NARI 2023 is a step forward in understanding the safety concerns of women in our cities. At the National Commission for Women, our priority is to ensure that every woman feels safe at home, at work, in public places and online," Rahatkar said at the event in Delhi.

As per intelligence reports, the terrorists reached Kathmandu in the second week of August. They infiltrated Bihar last week. Security agencies have been ordered to enhance surveillance and gather intelligence. District intelligence units have been advised to take necessary action in case of any suspicious activity.The security along the Indo-Nepal border and Seemanchal districts had been beefed up following Operation Sindoor in May, during which the Indian Armed Forces targeted terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The military operation was launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. Patrolling in the state has also been intensified in border areas, including Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul, Araria, East and West Champaran districts.The alert comes ahead of the Assembly elections in the state later this year, due to which political activity has been heightened. The security has also been increased amid the increased visits by leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.Bihar shares about 729 kilometres of open border with Nepal, which has been a key hotspot for infiltration incidents and cross-border movements. Notably, seven districts of the state lie along the border, making it challenging for constant surveillance and security enforcement.India shares its land borders with seven countries, including Nepal, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Afghanistan. The country also shares maritime borders with Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia.

Record Rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir&nbsp;According to the meteorological centre in Srinagar, Jammu recorded 380mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, from 8 am on Tuesday to 8 am on Wednesday, making it the highest one day rainfall recorded in the region since the MeT centre started recording in Jammu. This is almost equal to the 403.1mm average rainfall that the region receives in the month of August.&nbsp;The earlier record of highest rainfall in a day was almost three decades back, when 270.4 mm of rain was recorded on September 25, 1988.&nbsp;Weather forecast&nbsp;Meanwhile, there is some relief forecast from the heavy rains in the region as the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with mainly dry weather at many places. This is likely to help in the rescue operations at the Mata Vaishno Devi landslide site in which the toll has touched 38.&nbsp;In the last 24 hours, Bhaderwah has received 6.0 mm of rain, Batote 6.2 mm, Qazigund 0.6 mm, Jammu 5.4 mm, Katra 5.0 mm and Banihal 1.3 mm of rain.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Narayanan and top officials participated in the 'Bhoomi Puja', a pre-construction ritual, at the proposed launchpad site in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;Currently, India's only spaceport is the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, located along the southeast coast of the country. The Kulasekarapattinam launch facility, which is expected to become operational in a few years, is about 650 kilometres south of the Sriharikota spaceport.&nbsp;Speaking following the ceremony, ISRO Chief Dr. V. Narayanan said that the new spaceport, spread across 2,300 acres, is meant to launch the ISRO-developed Small Satellite Launch Vehicle(SSLV) and the spacefaring rockets being built by Indian startups. He added that the new spaceport could witness 20-25 launches per year. ISRO's SSLV has the stated capacity to launch 500 kg to orbits about 400 km above the Earth, while rockets being built by Indian startups are also in the sub-500kg category.&nbsp;In March 2025, ISRO had announced that the Kulasekarapattinam site is ready for the commencement of the construction of the Upper Stage Assembly Facilities (UAF-I &amp; UAF-II) for the preparation of the second and third stages of the 3-staged SSLV vehicle, along with a Launch Service Building (LSB).&nbsp;<h2>Why does India need a second spaceport ?</h2>&nbsp;While the existing spaceport at Sriharikota is ideal for launching heavier rockets towards the east(equatorial orbits), a major challenge crops up when launching ISRO's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle and similar rockets being built by startups.&nbsp;When a rocket travels towards the South Pole from Sriharikota, the rocket would have to overfly the island nation of Sri Lanka. Given the immense risk of overflying a country, India's rockets are programmed to perform a turn manoeuvre to avoid the Lankan landmass. So, instead of flying in a straight line, the rocket follows a curved path and takes a turn.&nbsp;

In March 2025, ISRO had announced that the Kulasekarapattinam site is ready for the commencement of the construction of the Upper Stage Assembly Facilities (UAF-I & UAF-II) for the preparation of the second and third stages of the 3-staged SSLV vehicle, along with a Launch Service Building (LSB). Why does India need a second spaceport ? While the existing spaceport at Sriharikota is ideal for launching heavier rockets towards the east(equatorial orbits), a major challenge crops up when launching ISRO's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle and similar rockets being built by startups. When a rocket travels towards the South Pole from Sriharikota, the rocket would have to overfly the island nation of Sri Lanka. Given the immense risk of overflying a country, India's rockets are programmed to perform a turn manoeuvre to avoid the Lankan landmass. So, instead of flying in a straight line, the rocket follows a curved path and takes a turn.
