West Bengal governor urges CM Mamata to dismiss Kolkata police chief, call emergency cabinet meeting

Mamta Banerjee

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to dismiss Kolkata police chief and convene an emergency cabinet meeting to address the RG Kar Medical College case, according to a statement from the governor's office on Sunday (Sep9).

The Governor urged the state government to respond to public calls for the removal of Kolkata’s Police Commissioner, following the rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor at the hospital. "Governor Bose has directed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold an emergency Cabinet meeting to discuss people's demand for justice for the deceased woman doctor," a source told PTI.

Governor Bose voiced concerns over the state government's ability to maintain law and order, particularly in the wake of widespread protests. These protests are raging not just in Kolkata but in other parts of West Bengal, as well as in cities across the country.

The Governor has been openly critical of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, led by Mamata Banerjee, accusing it of mishandling the situation. He said that the government cannot ignore its responsibility and stay silent amid such disturbing events.

"According to the governor, the state should function within the Constitution and the rule of law. The ostrich-like attitude will not pay and the state must address the public demand to remove the Police Commissioner of Kolkata," the source told the agency.

“People should feel that they can expect justice from the government. Now, the feeling is not there,” the Governor said at a recent event.

Meanwhile, various groups, including former students, clay modellers, rickshaw pullers, and junior doctors, took to the streets of Kolkata on Sunday, continuing protests over the incident that took place a month ago at the state-run hospital.

The mother of the postgraduate trainee, whose body was discovered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, joined the calls for the immediate arrest of those responsible. She said that she had only one child and now all the protesting medics are like her children.
