Rescue workers in India saved a one-and-a-half-year-old child on Thursday (Apr 4) whohad fallen into an open borewell in Lachyan village in Indi taluk, Vijayapura district in the southern state of Karnataka. The borewell was approximately 16 feet deep.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams successfully rescued the child after a 20-hour-long operation. The child was rushed to a hospital for treatment after the rescue work. The officials have not provided his current health status.

Karnataka Minister MB Patil congratulated rescue workers, also the local police and the Vijayapur district administration for saving the baby after 20 hours of continuous rescue operation.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said, "Heartfelt congratulations to everyone who contributed to the rescue mission."

"Our collective prayers have been answered. Special congratulations to our SDRF team, police force, and Vijayapur district administration who worked tirelessly for 20 continuous hours to save the baby, our pride," Patil further said.

The minister also highlighted the need to address dry or dangerous wells and borewells to avoid future incidents.

"A message to all of us: Let's never ignore wells and borewells that are devoid of water or are sources of danger. Take appropriate measures. May such incidents never recur in the future," he added in his post.

Local reports have mentioned that the child fell into the borewell when he was playing. Some reports also noted that the child could have fallen head down, which could have made him unconscious and caused serious injuries.

The passers-by heard the child crying, meaning he was in his senses. The family was informed immediately and the rescue work began on Wednesday around 6:30 pm (IST).

Before starting the rescue procedure, the officials used a camera to spot the child. They monitored the movement of his leg. Oxygen was also supplied by a pipeline.
