Chennai: Sathyabama University students told to vacate hostel after violent protest

A day after violent protests broke out on the campus,Chennai's Sathyabama declared a month's holiday and asked the students to vacate the hostel.

Mattresses were set on fire and hostel window panes were smashed after a violent protest broke out following a female student's suicide. The studentwas caught copying in the examination.

Several first-year students set parts of campus on fire, reports confirmed.

Reports said quoting a police officer that the college management has declared holiday for a month. However, the university did not confirm if the campus would be closed for a month.

The police said they are investigating the matter. The post-mortem of the student's body will be done today.

The18-year-old first-year student was studying computer science at Chennai's Sathyabama University. She was reportedly caught cheating in theexam and wascalled out by the staff and asked to leave the room, which allegedly led her to take the drastic step, reports said.

According to reports, the student was found hanging in her hostel room,she was then declared dead.

Many students damaged college property and broke the college furniture until police came in to control the situation. However, no arrests has been made, reports state.

Armed police were later deployed outside the college, ANI reported.
