As the protests rage onover the horrific Kolkata rape and murder case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (Aug 31)stressed that the country needs faster decisions in the cases related to atrocities against women.
PM Modi was addressing the inaugural event of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary at Bharat Mandapam.
The brutal rape and murder case of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital and College has shaken the nation.
Modi's remarks come after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to the Indian PM, requesting stringentlegislation and exemplary punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder.
PM Modi said that if there are faster decisions in such cases, the population will get greater assurance of safety.
"Today, atrocities against women, safety of children... are serious concerns of the society. Many strict laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more active. The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the greater assurance of safety half the population will get," he said.
He further addedthat many strict laws have been made in India for the safety of women.

Emphasising that in the Amritkaal (which roughly translates to the Golden era)of Independence, people in India have only one dream, and that is "Developed India, New India".
"In the Amritkaal of Independence, 140 crore countrymen have only one dream - Developed India, New India. New India, that is - a modern India in thinking and determination. Our judiciary is a strong pillar of this vision," PM Modiadded.
Further, he highlighted that in the last 10 years, the country has spent around $953 million (Rs 8,000 crore) on the development of judicial infrastructure, adding, "75% of the total amount spent on judicial infrastructure in the last 25 years has been spent in just the last 10 years alone."
"We have got new Indian judicial law in the form of the Indian Judicial Code. The spirit of these laws is - 'Citizen First, Dignity First, and Justice First'. Our criminal laws are free from the colonial mindset of rulers and slaves," PM Modi said.
