Congress President Rahul Gandhi led a midnight protest Thursday against the Kathua and Unnao gang rapes at Delhi's India Gate.
"Like millions of Indians my heart hurts tonight. India simply cannot continue to treat its women the way it does," Rahul tweeted on Thursday.
Rahul said the protest would be a "silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil".
"Join me in a silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil at India Gate at midnight tonight to protest this violence and demand justice," Rahul tweeted.
The Kathua and Unnao gang rapes have left the nation in shock.
In the first incident, an eight-year-old girl was kept captive in a temple in Kathua, Jammu. The child was sedated and raped repeatedly.

The Unnao incident only came to light when the girl and her family tried to immolate themselves outside the residence of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister on Sunday.
The girl's father — she was 17 when she was allegedly gang-raped — died a few days later, reportedly in police custody.
The main accused is the BJP MLA from Unnao, Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
A video has since surfaced of the girl's father saying he had been beaten by Sengar's brother in front of the police, but they did nothing because of the MLA's clout.
An FIR was finally filed on Thursday.
Sengar has been accused of, among other crimes, rape and kidnapping but he has not yet been arrested with the police saying the CBI would do so.
The case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
